Brush calligraphy tips: How to improve your thin upstrokes

08:35
I've gotten a lot of questions about thin upstrokes on my blog, on Instagram, and my YouTube channel. Many of you have asked me for tips on improving the thin upstroke, why your thin upstrokes do not seem thin enough, and how to avoid shakiness when creating them. Understanding how thin strokes are created and used in conjunction with thicker strokes will enable you to create basic strokes, letters, and eventually words. The challenging part about creating thin strokes is the transition from and to thick strokes. In this video, I discuss how to create thin upstrokes and then share some ways to improve your thin upstrokes. ~ ~ ~ Read the full blog post at: http://piecescalligraphy.com/2016/01/31/how-to-improve-thin-upstrokes/ ~ ~ ~ Supplies used: Tombow dual brush pen (http://amzn.to/1InV9wD) Koi coloring brush (http://store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/clink?yhst-141105795965626+WRq756+koiset---12.html+) Sakura Pigma brush (http://amzn.to/1P76rZ5) Pigma professional brush in bold (http://store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/clink?yhst-141105795965626+WRq756+pigbr.html) Tombow Fudenosuke hard tip (http://amzn.to/1HwvUxf) Tombow Fudenosuke soft tip (http://amzn.to/1Odahlc) Pentel sign pen with a brush tip (http://store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/clink?yhst-141105795965626+WRq756+signbr.html+) Pigma professional brush in fine (http://store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/clink?yhst-141105795965626+WRq756+pigbr.html) Rhodia dot pad (http://amzn.to/1P1jTT9) ~ ~ ~ Subscribe to my channel to always know the latest! REVIEW: Pigma Brush Pen

05:50
Have you ever wondered what makes the brush marker pen so awesome? Well, I can think of quite a few reasons! But one thing in particular is that brush pens give you the paintbrush-like feel... without the mess. This is precisely why I have pens in my purse at all times. And I can't seem to downsize. #brushpenproblems The Pigma Brush Pen by Sakura is very similar to a paintbrush. It’s super flexible and juicy, creating a raw and loose look to your calligraphy. With a tip so flexible, it is very sensitive to the slightest touch, so be sure to build your control and muscle memory with those practice drills. Improve your letters with this easy brush pen method

09:11
You just learned the basic brush calligraphy strokes. What's next? Learn how to connect the basic strokes to form letters! When you use two different brush pen colors, you are doing a couple of things: First, you are literally, physically breaking down the strokes to form the letters, which is the very key to creating beautiful brush calligraphy. In last week's post on tips for connecting basic strokes to form letters, I emphasized the importance of lifting to allow your letters to breathe, to give your brush calligraphy a more elegant look, and to allow you to look ahead to the next letter. Second, you are forcing yourself to go slow. By having to pick up one pen, write a single stroke, place the pen down, pick up the next pen, and repeat, you are taking the time to do these things. What better way to ensure you are slowing down than to put a process in place that makes you pause and take a second before creating the next stroke? Third, you are able to actually see how the basic strokes are connected. When your letters are all the same color, it is difficult to pinpoint where a stroke starts and stops, particularly when it is in the middle of the word. This is a challenge for beginners who may not necessarily know how the strokes connect to each other, where to place the next stroke, and how the connections should look after they are all put together. The different colors give a viewer a sense of where the calligrapher lifted the pen and then placed the pen back down onto the page. ~ ~ ~ Read more about this technique on the blog at http://piecescalligraphy.com/2016/01/24/improve-your-letters-by-practicing-with-two-different-colors/. ~ ~ ~ Supplies used: -Sakura Koi coloring brush (http://store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/clink?yhst-141105795965626+WRq756+koiset---12.html+) -Rhodia dot pad (http://amzn.to/1P1jLmv) -Smartphone tripod (http://amzn.to/1I8ZqUv) ~ ~ ~ Subscribe to my channel to always know the latest! REVIEW: Winsor and Newton Water Colour Marker | YouTober Day 22

05:59
Happy #youtober, Day 22! Let’s review #allthepens!!! Here’s the Winsor & Newton Water Colour Marker, which I briefly shared in a previous video, “Five minute practice: 10 brush pens.” I love how JUICY this pen is. But be careful, especially if you’re left-handed! While I love how juicy this pen is, the ink doesn’t try right away so be sure it dries completely before you accidentally smear it with your hand. 5 ways to improve your brush calligraphy

09:29
Do you ever wonder how you can improve your calligraphy? Do you wish you knew EXACTLY what to work on and what areas need help? The more you know and see what others around you are doing, the more critical you become of our own work. Does this sound like you? I totally get it. You may look around and see the work of others, wishing you could be as good, as smooth, and as successful as them. But here’s the problem: You don’t quite know HOW to improve. In this video, I take you through FIVE questions you can ask yourself so that you can determine where your calligraphy needs work: 1. Am I staying on the SLANT line? 2. How well am I controlling PRESSURE? 3. How consistent is my SPACING? 4. How consistent are my STROKES? 5. How well am I creating my LETTERFORMS? Ask yourself these questions and then comment below with your most problematic area. Your response may change over time, and that’s OK. But for now, let’s see exactly where you are. **********LEARN BRUSH CALLIGRAPHY WITH ME! ********** Web: http://piecescalligraphy.com Instagram: http://instagram.com/piecescalligraphy Facebook: http://facebook.com/piecescalligraphy **********THANKS FOR WATCHING! ********** If you’re new around here, welcome!
