How to install, license, and configure Blue Medora's vRealize Operations Management Pack for Cisco UCS on vRealize Operations 6.0 Transcript: Hello and welcome to Blue Medora’s configuration, installation and licensing guide for the Cisco UCS management pack. Before we get started, there will be a few things you need. Blue Medora will have provided a pack file and a license key – have those handy. On top of that, you will need information on your Cisco UCS systems. You will need to know your UCS manager’s hostname or IP address, the username and password, and the protocol which they're using – HTTP or HTTPS. Finally, you will need your vRealize credentials. Okay now we'll navigate over here to administration, and here we can see the solutions that we already have installed. So to add a management pack, we will click on the Add button. We will now search for our pack file. So here, we can see we have our Cisco UCS adapter pack file, we’ll open that and we'll begin to upload. Okay now that your solution has been uploaded, you can go down and click the next button and here's where you will locate the EULA agreement. So, make sure to read through this and once you have accepted the terms, you can click the next button. And then will your installation of the management pack will begin. Okay, so when the finish button appears we can see that everything has installed correctly. We can click finish and now your Cisco UCS adapter is now installed on your vRealize machine. Okay now that your Cisco UCS adapter is installed, we will now configure an instance. So first we will give our adapter a name. Now, we can either add the IP address or the host name. You can select if your UCS manager is using HTTP or HTTPS, we will select which which protocol its using – ours is using HTTPS – and permission to autodiscover all our resource kinds, so if you want all your, you know switches, fans, etc to be discovered automatically you can set this to true. We’ll will do this with this installation. And finally, we'll add our credentials, so we need to add a new credential set. We’ll call this our “first credential set” so here we need to add our Cisco UCS manager username and password. Here I am admin. This will work with read-only users as well. And then we need to add our be realize username and password – probably the same ones that you just log into here with. Click OK, make sure we're selected on our credential types here, and we can run test connection to make sure the connection is working. Looks like our test was successful. Before we leave, if we want to add a description to the set we can, otherwise we will click Save Settings. See if our data transfer was saved successfully and click Close and now we can see our new adapter configured right here. Okay now that we have installed or configured an instance of the adapter, the last step is to make sure our license key is added. So we're going to navigate over here to licensing, click on that, and then we're going to add a new license key. So we’ll select our product, it's going to be our Cisco UCS adapter and then Blue Medora should have given you a license key, so I have mine over here. I will copy it, bring it back over and add our license key. You then can make sure our license key is valid, looks like ours is, now you'll get you know a little bit of details on your license. We’ll then save our license and then see now that's been added here. Now that our license is added, we just have to add it to a license group. And then you can add it to the basic Cisco UCS adapter license. Edit this group that comes with the adapter and add our Cisco UCS license. Click Next – this should automatically be filled out correctly for you, however if you need to change anything you can change it here. For our sakes’ we’ll just click Next. Finally we can finish with our license now it should be added to the license group. With that, you can go back to our license key and when we refresh the page you should see that our license is now associated with another licensed group. And that should be it for configuring the adapter and now we can check to ensure that metrics are coming back. To do that, we can go into our environment overview. Go to our adapter instances, our Cisco UCS adapter instance. See that our our Cisco UCS adapter – currently we are on five-minute collections. Since adding our license, we have not had another collection, so we can wait a minute here just for another collection. Okay now that we came up and refreshed the screen we can see that a bunch different resource kinds have now come back. That’s because we set auto-discovery when we configured our adapter. You can now investigate one of these resource kinds to see if we are indeed getting metrics back. So let's say switch of our fabric interconnect as for now you can click this graph and it will bring us into that resource kind.

The OS doesn't know anything about the virtualized layers. Uncover the second virtualization performance bottleneck with this useful video series. TRANSCRIPT: The second performance bottleneck: virtualized operating systems aren't telling the truth Operating system metrics are no longer accurate once you virtualize. By design, this makes sense. An OS doesn't know of the virtualized layers and the standard metrics reported through tools such as top or task manager will be inaccurate. For example, the OS may report a spike in memory consumption in the task manager, but when you look into the virtualized layer, you would see the same spike as memory consumption decrease and also balloon memory increasing. Inaccurate performance indicators lead to increased efforts to diagnose, identify, and manage issues, which ultimately comes down to time spent is time lost. The plugin for VMware helps you to reclaim that lost time by bringing the metrics directly in from vCenter so you no longer have to rely on the inaccurate operating system metrics to identify and diagnose issues. So besides the KPI's that we saw and can see here now for the VMware virtual machine, there's tons of other metrics and graphs that we bring in from vCenter and make visible to you inside of enterprise manager. So here's an example of consumed hypervisor memory, and we can see a significant dip here, whereas if we were to look at the OS level that would not be there at all. We would not see that happen. Zoomed hypervisor CPU, we can see the actual CPU consumption of this virtual machine. The operating system would return completely different and inaccurate information.
