"Hurdy Gurdy Man" with extra verse from "Live in Japan 1973" album. Thrown like a star in my vast sleep I opened my eyes to take a peek To find that I was by the sea Gazing with tranquility 'Tis then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man He comes singing the songs of love Then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man He comes singing the songs of love "Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy", he sang "Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy", he sang "Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy", he sang Histories of ages past Hung in light and shadows cast Down through all eternity The crying of humanity 'Tis then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man He comes singing the songs of love Then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man He comes singing the songs of love "Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy", he sang "Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy", he sang "Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy", he sang Extra verse (written by George Harrison and Donovan) When truth gets very deep Beneath a thousand years of sleep Time demands a turn around And once again the truth is found Awakening the Hurdy Gurdy Man Who comes singing the songs of love Here come the Hurdy Gurdy Man And his singing the songs of love "Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy", he sang "Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy", he sang "Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy", he sang "Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy", he sang Made by http://vkontakte.ru/unholy_boy

Donovan Leitch - 'Hurdy Gurdy Man' - (Hurdy-gurdy version!!!)

04:20
'Hurdy Gurdy Man' - Donovan Leitch, 1967. Arranged and performed by Daniel Mantey - Music All Sorts; hurdy-gurdy(s), bass viol, harpsichord, & voice, with Ami Mantey - voice. (My daughter Ami joins in for the final chorus, as do two extra hurdy-gurdys, aside from the solo hg heard throughout.) Growing up during the 60's, I really enjoyed the songs of Donovan: 'Sunshine Superman,' 'Mellow Yellow,' etc., but 'Hurdy Gurdy Man' just really blew me away! Such a cool song and words, and sound (!), and that fabulous guitar solo! We of course didn't then realize that that was Jimmy Page, who would later further blow us away with Led Zeppelin...but I then knew I wanted to grow up to be a Hurdy Gurdy Man! I remembered seeing the barrel-organ players, with their cute coin-catching monkeys, especially at Cedar Point, Sandusky, Ohio as a little kid. But I soon learned (as I was then a teenager) that there was a more challenging, ancient, hurdy-gurdy stringed instrument, and that was what I wanted to play! To make a very long story very short, I studied music in college (harpsichord and recorder), eventually bought some bagpipes, and finally bought a hurdy-gurdy in 1999! As the instrument was on its way from England (to Japan), I went downtown and bought a CD copy of Donovan's 'The Hurdy Gurdy Man' and began wondering just how I might play it when my hg finally arrived. Well, I did get some ideas, but was dismayed that my hg only went up to high 'd,' and I needed at least some high 'e-flats' to cover Jimmy's solo and some other riffs I had in mind; and I just could not get it to sound right on a hurdy-gurdy. Darn, after ALL those years. AND, at my first public performance on my hg, someone in the audience requested 'Hurdy Gurdy Man.' Double darn!! SO, several years later I finally bought a larger hg, that went all the way up to 'high-g,' and immediately got back to my 'Hurdy Gurdy Man' arrangement, and it finally all fit together. My next gig (Autumn of 2004 at the same club mentioned above!) I closed with my version of 'Hurdy Gurdy Man!' I was indeed a hurdy-gurdy man. Then, in 2009, I did the above recording, at Cherry Tree studio, and added the harpsichord and bass viol to fill out the ensemble, and added the two extra hg, and extra vocals for the final chorus. If you subtract all those extras, the core is exactly what I play in solo concerts on the hurdy-gurdy. Oh, and in case you are not hg-aware; it has several drone strings, which I use throughout the piece, the trompette drone is that sharp percussion that comes in during the choruses and big solo, and during the solo I also add the second solo string. Full hurdy-gurdy. This one was built for me by Neil Brook of Preston, England. Get one from him! I loved covering Jimmy Page's legendary solo in the piece, and then so happy taking off and adding my own (mine starts as the shot settles on the third group of figures). And I use George Harrison's final verse, which he gave to Donovan, though it as not used on the original single. So.... 'Hurdy Gurdy Man' ON a hurdy-gurdy, performed BY a Hurdy-Gurdy Man! What more could one ask for?

Hurdy Gurdy -01- Ride On (HD)

05:08
Hurdy Gurdy formed from the Danish group Peter Belli and the Boom Boom Brothers (aka The B.B. Brothers) in June 1967. Three of the B.B. Brothers, guitarist Claus Bohling, drummer Jens Otzen and British vocalist and bassist Mac MacLeod formed the power trio. Inspired by Cream but with more psychedelic leanings they split from Peter Belli to form the band named by MacLeod 'Hurdy Gurdy'. They had considerable success in Scandinavia breaking many attendance records for their live shows. The band moved to England in early 1968, after MacLeod had been deported from Denmark. In Denmark, on the 19th of December 1967 MacLeod wrote to Donovan's manager Ashley Kozak to ask if he could help the band in any way. Donovan wrote "The Hurdy Gurdy Man" for them as a gift for MacLeod. MacLeod came back to the U.K. in the new year to see Donovan and a few weeks later the rest of the band followed. After hearing Donovan's demo tape the band set up outside his Little Berkhamsted cottage and played their version of the song. Donovan did not like the heavy take on the track they played as he wanted a softer, acoustic arrangement. Soon after he released his own version of the song which became a hit, his version in the end had a similar arrangement to the Hurdy Gurdy version. Donovan told Keith Altham of the NME (and Hit Parader)in December 1968, Hurdy Gurdy Man,' was originally written for a Danish group by that name,", "There is a friend of mine in the group — Mac MacLeod — whom I looked to in the early days to learn how to pick the guitar. "I wrote the song especially for them but then we got into a disagreement over how it was to be produced. I wanted to do it one way and they another. "So I said, `Right then - I'll do it myself because I think it's good enough for a single.' "So I did it. And it's out."[1][2] Whilst in the UK they did some recordings produced by Chris White and Rod Argent of The Zombies. Two tracks by the MacLeod era of Hurdy Gurdy, "Tick Tock Man " and "Neo Camel" are on the Mac MacLeod anthology The Incredible Musical Odyssey of the Original Hurdy Gurdy Man, and showcase the free-flowing power trio psychedelic rock sound that rivalled The Jimi Hendrix Experience in their live performances. Otzen and Bohling had to return to Denmark shortly after those recordings, as they were unable to secure work permits from the Musician's Union. A new bassist (Torben Forne) was recruited to replace MacLeod, and in the early 1971 they released a self-titled album for CBS which has recently been reissued on CD. MacLeod briefly joined the post-Zombies group Argent.

Hurdy Gurdy Man from Donovan drum cover. Triggering the British Rock kit from Drum Masters2. As of this posting have not found another drum cover on YT of this song. DISCLAIMER: I DON'T CONDONE THIS KIND OF DRUMMING AND BELIEVE THE PHRASE OF THE MELODY SHOULD RESOLVE BEFORE TAKING A DRUM FILL WHICH REALLY SHOULD SET UP THE NEXT SECTION OF THE SONG. THIS DRUMMING IS AN EXAMPLE OF "OVERPLAYING", SO KIDS DON'T TRY THIS ON THE GIG, I THEREFORE TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THOSE WHO MIGHT GET HURT PLAYING THIS FORM OF DRUMMING - USE AT YOUR RISK! : D THE DRUMMING VIEWS EXCLUSIVELY EXPRESSED ARE THOSE OF THE ORIGINAL DRUMMER AND NOT THE OWNER OF THIS CHANNEL. it's been rumored that Jimmy Page is the guitar player and John Bonham on drums on the session. However, I found the following on a Clem Cattini web page stating who played what on the session: Hurdy Gurdy Man - Donovan Funny I should be asked about "Hurdy Gurdy Man". I spoke to John Paul Jones who played bass on it and was the MD. The guitar player was Alan Parker. American Web sites say that John Bonham and Jimmy Page played on it. This is absolute Bullshit as JPJ said. This is the e-mail sent BY JPJ. TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN I have been contacted by Clem Cattini with regard to Donovan's Hurdy Gurdy Man I would like to confirm that the musicians on the record were as follows Donovan Accoustic Guitar John Paul Jones Arrangement/Musical Director and Bass Guitar Alan Parker Lead (electric) Guitar Clem Cattini Drums No other musicians were involved in this session The session was produced by Mickie Most and engineered by Eddie Kramer. Hurdy Gurdy Man -- Donovan.

03:24

Hurdy Gurdy Man

03:33
Cover version of song by Donovan - I'm singing and playing all the instruments except for the drums (by my friend c00p). Recorded in my living room. This song is a paraphrase from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's foreword to his translation of the Bhagavd-Gita -- that the teaching of transcendental consciousness is eventually re-awakened after having been forgotten for long periods of time. Originally recorded by Donovan in 1968 with John Bonham, John Paul Jones and Alan Parker, although some say Jimmy Page played guitar on the recording, making it proto-Zeppelin. I can hear that. Here's Donovan saying it was in fact Jimmy Page: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7cgY2Ow4HY All photos and video here taken by me and Jeff in Paris, April 2011.
