Database Time-Based Performance Tuning: From Theory to Practice

56:54
In this 2014 OpenWorld session, Graham Wood covers how you can identify bottlenecks and maximize database performance with Oracle’s unique database time methodology. It covers a rich toolset at the disposal of DBAs—from Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c’s Automatic Workload Repository and Active Session History features to Oracle Database’s Automatic Database Diagnostics Monitor feature—and how these tools work together seamlessly. The session also provides an in-depth understanding of how the database time methodology is used in Oracle Enterprise Manager to provide a simple yet effective method to diagnose and resolve performance problems with just a couple of mouse clicks.

Oracle SQL Monitoring - Performance Analysis

01:30:41
SQL Monitoring is the best new feature of Oracle 11g for performance analysts, developers and support teams. Finally there is a tool that provides the most accurate, useful and interesting information when a SQL statement is running for longer than expected in a clear format with no minimal advance configuration requirements: What execution plan is really being used? What row source cardinality calculations are incorrect? What steps in the plan are taking the most time and consuming most resources? In this presentation, Doug Burns will demonstrate the various ways of accessing SQL Monitoring functionality and use example reports to show how the information can be used to analyse both currently running and completed statements. It will also describe and offer solutions to some of the minor quirks you might encounter. Solving Performance Problems on Oracle DB

28:11
Solving Performance Problems on Oracle DB Matthew Vegh - Embarcadero Thursday, June 26, 2014 - 11am DBAs and database developers regularly spend a lot of time tracking down and resolving performance issues on the database servers they are responsible for; it can be very difficult, frustrating, and expensive. Given the complex interactions of applications, users and databases, new performance issues can arise almost as fast as old ones can be addressed. This session will simulate common performance problems on an Oracle server and then both identify those problems and provide effective solutions. Matthew Vegh is a Software Architect at Embarcadero Technologies for the Embarcadero DB Power Studio family of products and has been with the company for the better part of a decade. He has over 15 years of development experience with a wide range of technologies and a definite preference for database tooling.
How to Gather SQL Resource Consumption Metrics in Oracle

01:20:51
Presented by Karen Morton Tues 8th May 2012 Summary SQL is utilized to return data via our applications to service user requests. Whether it's a single customer lookup or a huge month end summary report, the SQL we write must gather the correct data and return it to the user. Ensuring that the SQL you write can do this in a timely and efficient manner, both now and in the future, requires that you measure and evaluate what resources your query must use. In this webinar, we'll cover several methods for how to collect data that show you precisely how your SQL consumes resources: Using AUTOTRACE Using DBMS_XPLAN.DISPLAY_CURSOR Using Report SQL Monitor Using ASH (Active Session History) and AWR (Automatic Workload Repository) data You'll learn how to utilize the data to understand the work your SQL is doing and the resources it consumes; identify currently evident performance issues as well as areas that could be problematic in the future; and modify your SQL to use less resources more efficiently while still returning the desired results. A live Q+A session with Karen Morton follows the presentation. For our complete archive, and to sign up for upcoming webinars please go to http://www.red-gate.com/oracle-webinars

Custom date time format in Oracle SQL Developer?

01:03
From Oracle SQL Developer's menu go to Tools -- Preferences. From the Preferences dialog, select Database -- NLS from the left panel. From the list of NLS parameters, enter DD-MON-RR HH24:MI:SS or for 24-Hour, DD-MON-YY HH24:MI:SS Or just for an active session use below instead. alter SESSION set NLS_DATE_FORMAT = 'required_date_format' i.e. alter SESSION set NLS_DATE_FORMAT = 'DD-MM-YYYY HH24:MI:SS' into the Date Format field. Save and close the dialog.

Watch Oracle DB Session Activity With My Real-Time Session Sampler

Watch Oracle DB Session Activity With My Real-Time Session Sampler For details about this tool, I created a special posting in my blog, A Wider View. Have a look! http://blog.orapub.com/20140811/Watch-Oracle-DB-Session-Activity-With-The-Real-Time-Session-Sampler.html The rss.sql tool is included in the OraPub System Monitor (OSM) toolkit (v13j), which can be downloaded http://resources.orapub.com/OSM_OraPub_System_Monitor_p/osm.htm Watching session activity is a great way to diagnose and learn about Oracle Database tuning. There are many approaches to this. I wanted something simple, useful and modifiable. I wanted no Oracle licensing issues. And, I wanted something I could give away. The result is what I call the Oracle Real-Time Session Sampler (OSM: rss.sql). The tool is simple to use. Based on a number of filtering command line inputs, it repeatedly samples active Oracle sessions and writes the output to a file in /tmp. You can do a "tail -f" on the file to watch session activity in real time!

Built-in Performance Monitoring in Oracle and SQL Server

01:27:41
While the primary focus of both Oracle and SQL Server is on relational database management, there are a number of tools that come with each software package that are focused around monitoring and investigating the performance of the servers. These monitoring tools vary wildly between the two platforms, yet still have a lot in common because of shared fundamentals. In their latest live 'Oracle vs. SQL Server' discussion, Jonathan Lewis (Oracle Ace Director, OakTable Network) and Grant Fritchey (Microsoft SQL Server MVP) will look at built-in performance monitoring mechanisms and tools. How to disconnect all connections on sql server database |kill all connections |disconnect all users

03:06
use master ALTER DATABASE YourDatabase SET SINGLE_USER WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE --do you stuff here ALTER DATABASE YourDatabase SET MULTI_USER This video is about killing or disconnect all connections to a database. The easiest way is bringing the database to single user mode and set it back to multiuser mode. This will disconnect all connections form all the users other than current one who is logged to the database. One important aspect here is, do not close the screen once you set the database to single user mode. Because when a database is in single user mode it will allow only a single connection to the database. If you allow dropping your connection and if any other connects to the database you will not be able to connect the database again. So you may have to Stop the SQL server and start again to connect the database. It is also possible to do this using SQL management studio. Right click on the database, go to properties, go to options and move to restrict access option. There you can select the single user mode or multiple user mode. Now The question is why do you need to do this. I mean when, do you want to kill all connections. It is mainly, when you want to have exclusive access to the database. For example a database is not allowing you to restore a backup on this because you cannot grant the exclusive access, then you can bring the database to single user mode; killing all connections; perform your activates and after that set it to the multi user mode. This way you can maintain the exclusive access while you are completing the work.

How To Tell If There Is An Oracle OS Memory Shortage - Webinar

01:18:37
How To Tell If There Is An OS Memory Shortage - Webinar An operating system memory shortage can cause very strange and intense performance situations. In this webinar, we will explore different ways to tell if there is a memory shortage and how this affects Oracle processes. Using a simple shell script, Craig is moving towards slowing increased memory usage. Then, we will watch what is happening using the vmstat, iostat and sar commands. And of course, we will also be monitoring the active Oracle sessions, key SQL statement elapsed times and key throughput metrics. As you will see, a memory bottleneck (rather, memory pressure) can cause some really strange performance behavior.

Download the presentation slides, code samples, and a free download of DB Optimizer at http://embt.co/1M7vSe6 Most of us have been in the situation where, for no apparent reason, performance for key SQL takes a nose-dive after having previously performed well. So, how do you handle this situation and stabilize performance back to acceptable levels? One approach is to go back in time using execution data stored in AWR. In many cases, AWR may contain what you need to revert your problem SQL to a better performing alternative.
