The BFI DVD 'The Joy of Sex Education' is now available to buy - http://filmstore.bfi.org.uk/acatalog/info_11484.html An instructional post-war film on menstruation that will horrify women who couldn't imagine periods without tampons. Thirteen year old Mary is taught what to expect during adolescence. With the aid of a diagram Mary is shown how her body will prepare itself for producing babies and is taught what to expect each month. She learns how to choose and wear sanitary pads (which come in very discreet brown paper packages), how to dispose of them and even how to deal with 'chaffing'. The kindly maternal voiceover also reassures her that it is OK to wash her hair but do be careful not to get a chill. Bizarrely, she was warned against getting her feet wet. Just in case Mary does feel out of sorts she's advised to "see if there's a hot drink going". Dancing, cycling and hockey are all fine but it's probably "as well to put off your swim". (Sharon Messenger) All titles on the BFI Films channel are preserved in the vast collections of the BFI National Archive. (5 Jul 2017) Ever since she was born in a squalid camp for Myanmar's displaced ethnic Rohingya minority that authorities won't let anyone leave, Rosmaida Bibi has struggled to do something most of the world's children do effortlessly: grow. Frail and severely malnourished, she looks a lot like every other underfed child here - until you realise she's not really like any of them at all. A tiny girl with big brown eyes, Rosmaida is 4 - but barely the size of a 1-year-old. Half a decade after a brutal wave of anti-Muslim violence exploded in this predominantly Buddhist nation in June 2012, forcing more than 120,000 Rohingya Muslims into a series of camps in western Myanmar. Rights groups say this has been adopted by the administration of Aung San Suu Kyi, the Nobel Peace laureate and longtime opposition leader who rose to power after her party swept national elections last year. And any hope that Suu Kyi - once lauded worldwide as a human rights icon - might turn things around has been shattered by her silence and the reality that life for the Rohingya has deteriorated by the day. Poor, unemployed, and prohibited from crossing checkpoints into the more affluent Buddhist-only areas, Begum has been unable to find anyone who can help. The Rohingya, a Muslim ethnic group, have long been denied citizenship, freedom of movement and basic rights in Myanmar, a country that largely sees them as foreigners from neighbouring Bangladesh even though most were born here. Although tensions in Rakhine state go back decades, the neighbourhood Begum grew up in in Sittwe was mixed, and she said people there used to get along. That changed dramatically on June 5, 2012, when Buddhist mobs began attacking Muslims at will. Begum fled her burning neighbourhood, running barefoot so hard and so fast she realised only later that her feet were covered in blood. Today that neighborhood - where denuded trees and the destroyed remains of homes are still visible - is occupied by Buddhist squatters the government has allowed in. Although Begum said her grandparents owned their family's house there, they have neither been allowed to return nor compensated for its destruction. Aside from a single district, Sittwe is now entirely Buddhist, and Muslims are prohibited from walking its streets. Matthew Smith, who runs the advocacy group Fortify Rights, said: "These displaced communities have a right to return to to their original places and it's incumbent upon the government now to respect that right and to do everything in its power ensure that these communities can rebuild their lives." Most of the camps remain and Suu Kyi's administration still restricts access to the region, blocking journalists from independent access to the north altogether. Last week, her government said it would also bar members of a U.N.-approved fact-finding mission from entering the country to investigate alleged rights violations by security forces against the Rohingya. Vanna Sara, a Buddhist abbot at Sittwe's Seik Ke Daw Min monastery, said harsh policies were necessary to protect Buddhists. Western Myanmar is on the frontline of a population explosion, and Muslims, were attempting to take over, he claimed. When Begum settled in Dar Paing after the 2012 violence, she tried to start her life anew. But her tragic story has mirrored that of many Rohingya. The man she married died shortly after he was detained in Malaysia, where he was trying to bring their family for a better life. Their son died a few hours after birth. Begum has since remarried, but her fisherman husband sometimes comes home from a day of work with less than a dollar, or nothing. (8 Mar 2018) LEADIN: An all-girl Palestinian rap group are making their voices heard. The rappers all hail from Dheisheh refugee camp in Bethlehem. STORYLINE: Dalya, Nadine, Diala and Sophie step out onto a stage and are greeted with loud cheers from the audience. They open their show with the song "Watani" - the title meaning "My Homeland" in Arabic. The four girls are members of Shoruq rap group. They came from Dheisheh refugee camp in Bethlehem to perform at the Notre Dame auditorium in Jerusalem during an event for International Women's day. "We made a change, because we are the first girls to sing rap in the (refugee) camp, and we are the first rap band for girls that is continuing "said Dalya Ramadan, a group member. While the group does sing about the ongoing conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis. This is not the only issue on Shoruq's agenda. "We sing about everything, all the problems that we face. For example, as a girl in the Palestinian society, as a refugee, as a girl (living) under occupation, all those problems that we face whether it is a personal issue, or a Palestinian issue that we go through as a whole country." said Sophie Al-Issa, another group member. The girls are now in high school. They joined the group when it started in 2013. They released their first album in 2017, titled "The Journey", with seven different songs. Shoruq group have also performed abroad - in France, Italy and the US. In the often-conservative society, girls singing rap is usually faced with criticism and sometimes refusal. Group member Nadin Odeh said that the criticism came from the people that were the closest to her. "For example, the guys that were with me in the (Dabke) group, they used to say what are you doing, singing rap, you are a girl, you need to be feminine, rap is not for you, and stuff like that." Odeh says that she started to convince people around her that it is normal for her to sing rap. "As long as you are convinced with what you are doing you can convince anyone." For many young Palestinians, visiting Jerusalem is not a simple task, as they require permits issued by Israeli authorities. "To be able to go to Jerusalem and sing there is a big thing for me. This will be the first time in my life that I go to Jerusalem, I've never visited the city because the occupation prevented us," says group member Diala Shahin. "This will be the first time and it will be amazing, especially as I'm going to sing in Jerusalem." Brenda Kenneally is raising funds for her photography project Upstate Girls - a multiplatform documentary which chronicles the lives of a group of families in Troy, NY over 9 years. In order to receive contributions, the project must be funded in full by 7/24/13. To help: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1744892122/upstate-girls I'm Brenda Ann Kenneally, for the past nine years I've been working in Troy, NY documenting the lives of the women that live on a single block there. My mission is to share with audiences what I have learned about the culture of class separation in the United States and the evolution of social policies that have shaped it. According to the 2010 census approximately 20% of the households in Troy are headed by single females. The jobs that these women have evolved from the factory work of the industrial revolution that earned Troy its name Collar City to the post industrial service sector jobs like Dunkin' Donuts, McDonalds, and other big box food chains that are now cemented in the American landscape. What has remained constant is that the women I have grown to know in Troy now as the collar laundresses in the 1900's have drawn on their maternal skills to power them through long days at work and huge family demands when they return home. The Upstate Girls Project is not only a document of the America that we all share with these women, but more importantly a story of the emotional connections that are universal to being human. The quest for love, beauty and belonging is the lifeline that accompanies these women through long bleak grey winters, jail visits to sons and fathers of their children, and long hours at often monotonous jobs. For many of us a successful life is acquiring the emotional fortitude to get from one safe space to the next. The love of a good dog, sparkly underwear from wal-mart, spongebob, coffee, cigarettes, kids and sex...lots of sex are oasis's in the post industrial state of Troy. I understand this because it's the world I grew up in. I have been working closely with the students at the Rochester Institute of Technology and The Visual Studies Workshop to create a multi-layered online documentary of my work. Together we've been going through hundreds of hours of video, thousands of photographs historical documents and ephemera to bring this project to life. I want to be able to create a platform for deep exploration of these complex issues. My dream is to have an interactive web documentary that can be used by others who share my love of discovering their fellows through storytelling, researchers and social workers, and most of all will be friendly to young people from cultures similar to community that I have been working in in Troy. You will be able to discover the lives of the women I've come to know through videos, photographs, letters, historical documents and scrapbooks on your own time and tie the pieces of their stories together in your own way. A workshop component of this show began the participatory scrapbook project and a further collaboration with The Rennselaer County Historical Society to include images, letters and ephemera from their collect to situate the contempory documentary work with in the frame work of Troy's rich industrial history. Kickstarter funds will be essential in producing a cohesive interactive vehicle for all the facets of this project. The second phase of this work will be to open the database of information I have gathered over the past 9 years to those people who can activate change. It is my hope that this project will reach beyond the traditional audience of documentary photography and news and support research and change. I'm reaching out to you with the hopes that your generosity can help spread this project to your community. I've also asked some of my colleagues who I admire and are photographing women in beautiful and diverse ways to contribute to an amazing portfolio that weave their work together with some of my favorite iconic images of women by women from the Library of Congress Collection. These photographers include Julianna Beasley, Samantha Box, Maisie Crow, Andrea Morales, Emily Schiffer and Zoe Strauss. This portfolio is a limited edition collection of incredible contemporary work. Upstate Girls is an enormous project, which is why I need your help. Your donations will help access the resources needed to bring it to it's full potential. The students at both RIT and VSW have been hard at work since November 2012 organizing and pre-editing this massive amount of material. We are now at the stage where the students and the project would benefit greatly from collaboration with professional web designers, web programmers, and video editors. These resources take a lot of time and money and without it the project can never be finished.

Hi and welcome back! :) Here is a video about Taehyung. He is the most biased BTS member. Even when his teaser image was released, 5 personal fanclubs were created. That's gucci boy for you xD haha And it looks like he's not even trying to get so many fangirls xD. He's silly and fooling around most of the time. But I appreciate a lot the fact that, even tho he is so dorky and childish, he takes the band very seriously and is working incredibly hard. I admire him for that :) Please enjoy! Two South Dakota girls on their way to an end-of-school-year party at a gravel pit in May 1971 drove off a country road and into a creek where their remains lay hidden until last fall when a drought brought their car into view, authorities said Tuesday. State and local officials held a news conference Tuesday afternoon confirming that the 1960 Studebaker unearthed in September included the remains of Cheryl Miller and Pamella Jackson, both 17-year-olds who attended Vermillion High School. The investigators showed dozens of photographs of well-preserved clothing, Miller's purse and even her driver's license complete with a smiling photograph. Those personal items and DNA were used to identify the girls, said Attorney General Marty Jackley. Jackson didn't have her purse along. Classmates who saw the teens before they disappeared and other evidence indicated that they had not been drinking, he said. In addition, mechanical tests on the car pointed away from foul play, Jackley said. He noted that the car was in the highest gear and the headlight switch on the dashboard showed the lights were on. He said the bodies were found in the front seats, as opposed to the back seat or trunk, and that their clothing did not appear to be missing _ all of which points away from their deaths being caused by a crime. There is no way to know whether a blown tire might have cause a crash, but one was damaged and the tread was quite thin, he said. Family members, law enforcement and others had searched the area countless times without luck. The girls' remains will be returned to family members for burial. English/Nat Following the success of British pop group the Spice Girls, women-only bands have mushroomed all over the world. And Israel is no exception. The Candy Girls haven't yet made a song but that's not stopping a producer promoting them as Israel's version of girl power. Iris, Liat, Miki, Roy and Katy are the five women chosen by music producer Roni Yehoshua to form the Candy Girls. It took weeks of tense auditions to put together the five girl band who had never met before. To help them tune in to their new jobs and get to know each other better, their manager Roni Yehoshua gave them a four day workshop. The girls started the first day with dancing lessons, followed by make-up lessons and, more importantly, singing lessons. So great is the influence of the British Spice Girls that the Candy Girls are already generating waves of publicity before they've even released a song. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We are the Israeli version of the Spice Girls, we try to imitate their success and that's it baby." SUPER CAPTION: Roni Yehoshua The Candy Girls do not have a song and they also have no record company to release one through. But that's not stopping these five from getting their fifteen minutes of fame. Not surprisingly, the girls are enjoying all the attention around them. And incredibly the one that looks like Posh Spice doesn't think they resemble Spice Girls Geri, Mel B, Mel C, Victoria and Emma. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We don't look exactly like the characters of the Spice Girls and.. but because we knew its succeeding abroad we took the idea and we hope to succeed in Israel." SUPER CAPTION: Liat Goldman, Candy Girl But whether they look like them or not, these five must know that only girl power will get them to the top. This tantalising fragment offers just a glimpse of an early two-reel (20-minute) drama made by George Pearson, who became an important feature film director in the 1920s but whose films are almost all tragically lost. The well-photographed surviving scene was shot on location in Devon, and seems to show a mid-point of the plot, which concerned rival suitors, a Londoner and a local sailor. The sailor is played by Percy Moran, better known as Lieutenant Daring in a popular adventure series of the period. In 2014, a copy of George Pearson's Love, Life and Laughter - one of the 75 titles in the BFI's 2010 'Most Wanted' list of missing British films - was found in an a small Dutch town. Santa Claus, whose workshop is in a secret location near the North Pole, spends the whole year getting ready to deliver presents overnight on Christmas Eve, including answering letters from children and listening to their requests. This year he allowed a camera crew to witness his final preparations. With his unmistakable long white beard and red robes, he was seen striding past snow dusted pines to his sleigh and hefting a large sack into position. He then patted his reindeer Rudolf before taking up the reins of his sleigh and urging his faithful companion forward along a snowy track. "Merry Christmas," he said before his departure. Although Father Christmas is busy making sure everyone will get what they want, he says what is most important to him is that people remember to wish for peace on earth and good will for everyone. It is not known if Father Christmas intends to meet up with other members of his reindeer team before setting off on his annual gift-giving journey. According to a Santa workshop official, it is through clever use of the world's time zones that he's able to make all his deliveries in a single night.
