To understand is to perceive patterns - Science's marriage to Art produces Wonders

01:46
Ecstatic Illumination expressed as a non-commercial mashup. Where as once we were blind, now we can see. This is a PSA to infect you with AWE. Let it resonate. Patterns - Humanity's ever growing urge of reasoning through looking into and analysing for patterns. From Notthisbody By @jason_silva and @notthisbody - Follow us on Twitter! Featuring "Welcome To Lunar Industries" by Clint Mansell. Buy it on iTunes! INSPIRATION: The Imaginary Foundation says "To Understand Is To Perceive Patterns"... Albert-László Barabási, author of LINKED, wants you to think about NETWORKS: "Networks are everywhere. The brain is a network of nerve cells connected by axons, and cells themselves are networks of molecules connected by biochemical reactions. Societies, too, are networks of people linked by friendships, familial relationships and professional ties. On a larger scale, food webs and ecosystems can be represented as networks of species. And networks pervade technology: the Internet, power grids and transportation systems are but a few examples. Even the language we are using to convey these thoughts to you is a network, made up of words connected by syntactic relationships." 'For decades, we assumed that the components of such complex systems as the cell, the society, or the Internet are randomly wired together. In the past decade, an avalanche of research has shown that many real networks, independent of their age, function, and scope, converge to similar architectures, a universality that allowed researchers from different disciplines to embrace network theory as a common paradigm.' Steven Johnson, author of Where Good Ideas Come From, writes about recurring patterns and liquid networks: "Coral reefs are sometimes called "the cities of the sea", and part of the argument is that we need to take the metaphor seriously: the reef ecosystem is so innovative because it shares some defining characteristics with actual cities. These patterns of innovation and creativity are fractal: they reappear in recognizable form as you zoom in and out, from molecule to neuron to pixel to sidewalk. Whether you're looking at original innovations of carbon-based life, or the explosion of news tools on the web, the same shapes keep turning up... when life gets creative, it has a tendency to gravitate toward certain recurring patterns, whether those patterns are self-organizing, or whether they are deliberately crafted by human agents" Patrick Pittman from Dumbo Feather adds: "Put simply: cities are like ant colonies are like software is like slime molds are like evolution is like disease is like sewage systems are like poetry is like the neural pathways in our brain. Everything is connected. "...Johnson uses 'The Long Zoom' to define the way he looks at the world—if you concentrate on any one level, there are patterns that you miss. When you step back and simultaneously consider, say, the sentience of a slime mold, the cultural life of downtown Manhattan and the behavior of artificially intelligent computer code, new patterns emerge." James Gleick, author of THE INFORMATION, has written how the cells of an organism are nodes in a richly interwoven communications network, transmitting and receiving, coding and decoding and how Evolution itself embodies an ongoing exchange of information between organism and environment.. (Its an ECO-SYSTEM, an EVOLVING NETWORK) "If you want to understand life," Wrote Richard Dawkins, "don't think about vibrant, throbbing gels and oozes, think about information technology." (AND THINK ABOUT NETWORKS!! Author Paul Stammetts writes about The Mycelial Archetype: He compares the mushroom mycelium with the overlapping information-sharing systems that comprise the Internet, with the networked neurons in the brain, and with a computer model of dark matter in the universe. All share this densely intertwingled filamental structure. RNL - Someone Who Cares: The Science and Art of Nursing

06:21
Patients learn from nurses every day, but nurses also learn from their patients. In this video, produced collaboratively by Reflections on Nursing Leadership magazine (Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International) and the nursing department of Houston Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas, nurses share moments of "specialness" that make their lives significant. "When you look at nursing and why people select that field, it remains always the same thing," says Ann Scanlon McGinity, PhD, RN, FAAN. "People who choose nursing are people who really want to make the world better, who want to care for patients, and who want to be with people in times of crisis—and bring strengths to those folks that they have learned through the science and art of nursing." Who can do the work of nursing? "It's a very skilled, committed person, who brings energy and enthusiasm," says McGinity, "because every day there's the opportunity for a gift to be had from the patient."

The Art and Science of Mindfulness with Dr. Shauna Shapiro

48:22
Consciousness Hacking Meetup: San Francisco, November 28th, 2016 Dr. Shauna Shapiro - scientist, author, and world renowned mindfulness expert - guides us at the razors edge where the science and practice of mindfulness meet. And there are few people in the world more qualified to take us there. Shauna weaves 20 years of deep meditation practice with over 150 scientific articles. She's been featured in Wired magazine, was hosted by Google, has been honored by the Dalai Lama's Mind and Life Institute, and has published multiple critically acclaimed texts including the The Art and Science of Mindfulness, and Mindful Discipline: A loving approach to setting limits and raising an emotionally intelligent child. Dr. Shapiro will use ancient wisdom and modern science to examine the mechanisms through which mindfulness can help us change, learn, and grow. We’ll discover how a limited understanding of mindfulness as a cognitive-attentional practice can inadvertently backfire — and what we can do to manifest its true benefits. Dr. Shapiro will introduce a model of mindfulness which focuses on the importance of the attitude with which we pay attention. When we weave together our attitude and intention with attention, true learning and transformation can take place. Finally, guided by a central theme of neuroplasticity -- what we practice grows stronger -- we will inquire deeply into the essential questions: What do we want to practice? What do we want to grow? ~ Shauna Shapiro, PhD, is a professor, author, and internationally recognized expert in mindfulness. With twenty years of meditation experience studying in Thailand, Nepal, and in the West, Dr. Shapiro brings an embodied sense of mindfulness to her scientific work. She has published over 150 journal articles and chapters, and coauthored the critically acclaimed texts, The Art and Science of Mindfulness, and Mindful Discipline: A loving approach to setting limits and raising an emotionally intelligent child. Dr. Shapiro is the recipient of the American Council of Learned Societies teaching award, acknowledging her outstanding contributions to graduate education, as well as a Contemplative Practice Fellow of the Mind and Life Institute, co-founded by the Dalai Lama. Dr. Shapiro has been invited to present her work to the King of Thailand, the Danish government, and the World Council for Psychotherapy in Beijing, China, as well as to Fortune 100 Companies including Cisco Systems, Genentech and Google. Her work has been featured in Wired magazine, USA Today, Dr. Oz, the Huffington Post, Yoga Journal, and the American Psychologist.

How to create an Art Floor

04:26
I have created a number of magazine floors, which are durable, artsy and very affordable if you recycle art in magazines :) I have used a mixture of art, science and sport magazines and have managed to create (in my opinion) some pretty cool floors. This started as I had a large space in my home that I could not afford to cover in wood or carpet and embarked on a major art project to cover the space in magazine pages. Little did I know that five years later it would still look fantastic. It's also easy to clean and super durable, so if you fancy making one too all the steps are in this video :) Find out more about my projects at jennyofthejane.com. Special thanks to John Sweeney for filming/editing this video, check out more of his work at sweentown.com.

Pragati - College magazine release - Chinmaya College of Arts, Commerce and Science

05:31
Here comes the new edition of our college magazine “PRAGATI”. PRAGATI is totally a renowned format in its texture, upkeeping all the traditions and values followed by the earlier editions of Chinmaya Magazine. I have earnestly tried to bring out a dynamic difference in the magazine so as to make it more vibrant and content oriented. As a propaganda to popularize and give a face lift to the magazine, we started with finding a new name through campus poll which met with an overwhelming response, that finally gave birth to the name PRAGATI. The campus continued the same tempo that became the driving force to inspire many students which resulted in improving sponsorship and succeeded to ensure circulation of more copies. As the name PRAGATI denotes, it was our moral responsibility to stand with the essence of the name by including the major achievements of the college at large and the personal achievements of alumni students, who had come out with flying colors in the real life as a real testimony to Chinmaya. Julia Buntaine: A Means without an End: Process in Science-Art Collaboration

13:11
Julia Buntaine, Innovator-in-Residence, Rutgers University; Director and Editor-in-chief, SciArt Center and Magazine; Neuroscience-based artist, New York City. Science-art collaboration is an increasingly popular notion as the means and methods of single disciplines are no longer sufficient for innovation. While end products are often the goal, the process of collaboration is what produces the innovative individuals needed as we face the opportunities and challenges of the 21st century. Inside Nuance: the art and science of how Siri speaks

10:27
In this feature we go behind the scenes at Nuance Communications, a company that develops voice technology for Apple, Dragon, and many others. Technology companies have been trying to make computers speak "naturally" since before the PC was first introduced. Read the full feature here: http://www.theverge.com/2013/9/17/4596374/machine-language-how-siri-found-its-voice Clarification: Allison Dufty is not the voice of Siri, and neither she nor The Verge intended to imply that she is.
