Japan Blue Jeans Explains Why Japanese Denim Has to Be Handmade
Get the latest from HYPEBEAST TV by hitting the SUBSCRIBE button! Some of the best jeans in the world are crafted in Kojima, a seaside district of Kurashiki, Okayama province. Widely known as Japan’s “denim capital,” Kojima has long been the textile mecca of the country and is where jeans were first produced in Japan. Amongst the cluster of denim manufacturers in the area, Japan Blue has separated itself with loyal followers through its quality in production. “We spend most of our time developing and creating the material, because that’s the essential element to quality denim” says Hiroki Kishimoto, longtime designer and founder of Japan Blue Jeans. Continuing the tradition of crafting durable and timeless denim, Kishimoto and his team undergo a meticulous process each season, from the special wash and dye treatments to the way the denim is hand cut and sewn. While denim originally hails from the States, Kojima denim has set itself apart from competitors in the market by portraying a unique beauty in their jeans that reflects Kojima’s culture. We visited Japan Blue’s studio in Okayama to learn more about the “Kojima way” of creating denim. In addition to the traditions of denim, Japan Blue is working with renown denim retailer Okayama Denim on an upcoming collaborative project. While details are sparse for now, be on the look out for this very special release when it drops later this year. Japanology Plus 2017 03 02 Denim
Though the words “Japanese clothing” are perhaps most likely to conjure up images of items such as traditional kimono, two-toed workman’s boots and wooden geta clogs, Japan’s modern status as a fashion leader has brought other types of garment to the fore. One category for which Japan has established a particularly good reputation since the latter half of the 20th century is denim, with several Japanese brands making great waves on the global stage, and other workshops offering superlative fabric-processing techniques to the world's top manufacturers. The place of pilgrimage for any fan of Japanese denim is the laid-back town of Kojima in Okayama Prefecture, Western Japan, on the banks of the Seto Inland Sea. For centuries the town was known for the production and dyeing of cotton fabrics, particularly using aizome, traditional Japanese indigo dyeing techniques. In the early 20th century, with the nation in the throes of rapid modernization, local producers shifted their emphasis to school uniforms. But in the 1960s, with a small number of large firms starting to dominate the schoolwear sector, one plant in Kojima decided to embark on a new adventure with denim, a fabric that had been introduced by the occupying US forces in the years that followed World War II. They released the first Japan-made jeans in 1965, produced using denim imported from the USA, and key features of the rest of the Japanese jeans story are covered in the show. In the 1960s, for people of Peter's generation, jeans came to be associated with rebellious attitudes that were closely tied to the golden years of rock & roll. For teenagers (then a new concept) and students, such fashion also became linked with political protest. In fact, in this edition of Japanology Plus, Peter makes a reference to 1968, not only the zenith of hippie culture (bellbottoms) but also a peak year for student protests in various cities around the world including Paris and Tokyo. One thing linking youthful rebels with a cause everywhere was a penchant for blue jeans. Denim came originally from the French city Nimes ("serge de Nimes"), and it seems that "jeans" derives from Genoa, where denim was first made into trousers that were dyed blue using indigo. Jeans as we know them today can be traced to US manufacturers in the late 19th century. In the years since then, Japanese makers have made many innovations in denim production techniques, from the first stretch denim, to perfecting stonewashing and acid-washing techniques, and sanding jeans over a mold placed under the thigh area to create distinctive “hige” creases around the crotch, their name invoking the whiskers of a cat. In this week’s show we also see time-honored techniques such as aizome indigo dyeing. If you're planning a trip to Japan, you might like to try out this type of dyeing at one the many aizome taiken (hands-on) workshops dotted around the country. You won't be able to dye your denims, but you'll get an idea of the process, and you may well end up with your very own tie-dyed aizome handkerchief. https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/japanologyplus/program-20170302.html

Anthony Bourdain and Premium Japanese Denim Brands: The Balcony Sessions #3
Anthony Bourdain and Premium Japanese Denim Brands: The Balcony Sessions This week we get a little serious, actually we get a lot serious. By now, I am sure most of you have hear about the suicide of Anthony Bourdain. It was a shock to all and I just wanted to take a couple of minutes to say a few words and reach out to anyone who is in dire straights. Just to say there are ways out. Taking your life is never the answer and there is help out there. Just reach out, only takes that one little step. I had a look online and I found this website with a comprehensive list of helplines. Please please please use it! List of International Helplines http://www.suicide.org/international-suicide-hotlines.html For our brothers and sister in the US http://www.suicide.org/index.html I believe that site is based in the USA, but there is a huge amount of great information on there about a range of topics. I would also like to draw attention to a series of shorts Anthony did with Whiskey makers, Balvenie. I really enjoyed all the shows he made but this series of short documentaries on craft was by far my favourite. Raw Craft takes a look at makers and artisans, people who are at the very pinnacle in their chosen craft. For lovers of quality and craftsmanship, it is a fascinating exploration. https://youtu.be/6ChPbdD3zDk We also get to some denim. “riyas m h” asked “Which are the most premium Japanese denim brand?”.... And I answer the question. Kinda.

The ULTIMATE GUIDE Raw Selvedge Denim Jeans: Denim Weight vs Fading Potential
This video is about Finding Your Perfect Raw Selvedge Denim Jeans and we discuss Denim Weight and Fading Potential. Denim Weight Part 1 can be found here: https://youtu.be/soHFlYZKX5U One of the things we love about denim and jeans is the ability for the fabric to fade. Creating a totally unique garment for you. The fading potential of a denim relies on a lot of different factors but the weight of the denim is certainly one of them. Basically, heavier denim has the potential to fade more sharply and with more spectacular results than super light denim. This is due to the stiffness and the way in which fade patterns will lock in better to the heavier denim. Part 1: Setting Your Budget can be found here https://youtu.be/AcGZcttc3WU Part 2: Finding Your Fit can be found here. https://youtu.be/k-Iq31A5tM4 Thanks for tuning in guys!

Made better in Japan
Every day at Edwin in Harajuku, you’ll see many fashion-forward tourists coming in to shop for premium denim. Whether it’s tapered, skinny, or rigid, they seem to like it all… A woman from San Francisco was checking out slim denim… This man from Tennessee came to look for black jeans. He finds one that costs about 17,000 yen(about 150 USD) and goes into the fitting room to try it on. Tourist from Tennessee/ “The quality I can definitely tell its up from the brand that I was wearing before, I won’t say names, but I certainly like these.” And, he happily makes a purchase. Edwin is a Japanese denim brand that’s been in business for over 70 years. But they’ve only opened this shop 2 years ago, hoping to attract more tourists. Now, 70 percent of the store’s sales comes from overseas visitors. Many shoppers not only appreciate their high quality, but for their stitching techniques. For example, the back of the jeans is skillfully stitched… It’s part of their denim design… Tourist from Boston/ “I means it’s just the quality of the stitching, the way that they are assembled, some of the details, the selvage line, and the thread that they use for that.” The shop has bonsai trees at the entrance, and paper lanterns for their lightings. They want visitors to get a feel of a local shopping experience. Keitaro Ikeda, Shop Manager, Edwin Retail/ “We have skilled craftsmen that stitches our products. That’s why Japanese jeans don’t rip. We hope to tell each customers how great Japanese jeans are.” A denim maker from western Japan is also trying to attract more visitors by starting a unique service in Tokyo. Betty Smith is a brand from Kurashiki in Okayama Prefecture, an area famous for denim and textile production. This brand is known for their quality of the textures. They even have denim that uses gold thread from Kyoto. The new service they launched called “Omiyage-jeans”, meaning souvenir jeans, will allow customers to experience a denim making process. They can choose the patch, button, and rivets, from a variety of colors and designs. Then, staff will teach you how to use the button attaching machines that were installed for this service. One by one, customers can enjoy putting the parts together. The cost of this service including the jeans is only 7000 yen (about 60USD). Yasuhiro Oshima President, Betty Smith/ “We want to show the different types of Japanese jeans we have available. We also want more tourists to get interested in the production area and visit Okayama.” Jeans is not a Japanese invention. But denim makers are trying to prove to the world, that the shopping experience and the quality could be made better in Japan.
Why Levi's Dominates Denim
Levi Strauss & Co. is considering an IPO in 2019. Levi's patented jeans in 1873 and remains the biggest denim retailer in the U.S. 150 years later. Though it often missed major fashion trends in previous decades, the 2010s have brought Levi's back to popularity. Watch this video to find out how. Denim sales have been outpacing the overall apparel industry. Research from The NPD Group has apparel growing 1 percent, while the denim industry is growing 5 percent. Levi Strauss reported revenue of $1.39 billion for the quarter ending Aug. 26, up 10 percent from the previous year. The San Francisco-based company reports quarterly earnings because its debt is publicly listed. Consumers were substituting their jeans for yoga pants and leggings, but it looks like fashion could be swinging back in favor of denim. "I think that the outlook for jeans is positive," UBS analyst Jay Soles told CNBC. "Athleisure — performance apparel — that trend has changed a lot." Nostalgia and streetwear have brought back styles from the 1980s and 1990s, benefiting iconic brands like Levi's. Analysts think a new style is on the horizon to unseat skinny jeans, the last big denim trend. "It is an opportune time [for a Levi's IPO] if there is a denim cycle coming back," Macquarie Capital analyst Laurent Vasilescu said. If not, shoppers will still be waiting two or three years to buy a new pair of jeans, instead of only one, like before athleisure dominated. Levi's won't be the only new stock for investors looking to try on jeans this year. VF Corp, which owns rival denim brands Lee and Wrangler, announced in August that it would be spinning off its jeans brands into a separate public company called Kontoor Brands. The move will allow the company to focus on growing its other brands, like Vans and The North Face. VF Corp had been aiming to complete the spinoff in March. It filed the paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission in mid-December, but CFO Scott Roe told analysts on an earnings conference call in January that the partial federal government shutdown could delay Kontoor's market debut. A volatile stock market could also mean that Levi's lands short of the $600 million to $800 million that it reportedly wants to raise through the IPO. Despite a resurgence in its Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger brands, PVH Corp, which has a market value of $8.3 billion, is down 26 percent over the last 52 weeks. While VF Corp's stock, with a market value of $36.2 billion, is faring better thanks to its non-denim brands, shares are only up 3 percent in the last year.» Subscribe to CNBC: http://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC About CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered. How we make JAPAN DENIM
FUNDAMENTAL AGREEMENT LUXURY http://www.fdmtl.com/ FABRIC The shuttle runs the weft yarn through the warp at 2250 threads. An old-fashioned loom can only produce 40 meters of denim fabric per day. That's only enough for 16 pairs of denim pants. TECHNIQUE The room is surrounded by the sweet sounds of the antique sewing machines. When the denim is being sewn its like playing a musical instrument. The sensitive touch of a fingertip. The sounds of sewing machines. Real thorough. CREATION The vintage processing techniques will put new life into the product. The usage of many tools by the skilled hands of the artisans give birth to our proud products. The "Dedication" and "Pride" of Japanese masters. To get here, this is the back-story.

Denim in Tokyo 2015
Welcome to my video on Tokyo, Japan. Now before I begin, I’d just like to say that this is not a comprehensive guide to denim in Tokyo. I made this video with the intention to give some perspective on denim culture in Tokyo. It was winter and it was raining dreadfully for 2 days but I did manage to capture a few good shots. This is EVISU. It’s located very near Ebisu and Daikanyama. I was told that most of the products in the store are unsurprisingly Made in Japan. However, there were a few racks that had Made in China shirts. So it’s best to ask where the good stuff is. They have the whole range of EVISU dry denim in store, where you could opt for a hand painted gull on your back pockets. Bear in mind, that this may take 3-5 days to complete. A rush job is available at a further cost. EVISU does not just make dry denim, they produce fanciful fishing tackle and even drivers and clubs. There was a very large formal menswear section in the back, that had everything from leather shoes to silk jackets. Daikanyama is a very trendy street. It houses stores like Jelado and Warehouse Archives. Warehouse had brands like well Warehouse, Pendleton and Heller’s cafe to name a few. Sorry about my buddy Justin’s singing there! We move on to Ueno. It is an amazing district that seems to have a little bit of everything. They had Pachinko centres, a fish market, lots of street food and ramen, hat stores, jewellery stores, even a BB gun store! Now we come to the real reason why I visited Ueno! Americaya, Hinoya and General Garden are arguably a denim head’s wet dream. They’ve got whole sections of Levi’s Vintage Clothing, Schott NYC leather jackets, Buzz Rickson coats, Lonewolf shoes, Jelado shirts, you name it they’ll probably have it! The denim brands were plentiful! From Denime to Samurais to Resolute to The Flat Head to Eternals, the list goes on and on! I had a look at Hinoya’s in house brand Burgus Plus, wound up walking away with a couple of pants! While I was in Tokyo, I decided to look up Tagaya-san of Stevenson Overall Co. He was so warm and welcoming! Taking me through his office and to a private showroom for retailers’ eyes only, featuring his latest Spring / Summer collection! It turns out, that Tagaya-san was the first in Japan to use single needle construction on denim 13 years ago, producing a more durable pair of jeans. Apart from the amazing knits and shirts, there were some incredible accessories like this silver bangle and ring set with Deer bone! This is a range of accessories produced by a different label called Mohawk also under Tagaya-san. This is Takeshita Street in Harajuku. So many young and fashionable people explore the many cafes and boutiques even thrift shops this place has to offer. If you’re in Harajuku, you must visit R.R.L.! It is like a denim museum! I had the full intention to visit the Goro’s store, however, the line was 6 hours long and it stretched for a few blocks down! Instead, I looked at a secret vintage eyewear store at the basement of the same building, called Solakzade. They converted this old swimming pool into a fashion retail store called The Pool by Hiroshi Fujiwara. Although I’ve only been in Tokyo for such a short while, it’s remarkably apparent to me how denim is such a big part of Japanese culture. Just walking down Shibuya, you’ll find all kinds of people in denim from undoubtedly varying walks of life. We’re not just talking about the full on workwear bloke but everyone seems to see denim as a staple part of their wardrobe. I met a beautiful model the other night and she had on a very form fitting pair of denim, almost like she was reading my mind. Anyways, this has been a spectacular trip, I hope you enjoyed taking it with me. I’ll definitely be heading back soon, I encourage you to do the same! Suggestions for products and companies are always appreciated- Comment below From Gustin: A deep indigo warp is paired with a rare gunmetal weft to take this classic Japanese denim to the next level. Gustin jeans made from sanforized raw selvedge denim from one of the finest mills in Japan. We love classic denim that dials up the details in just the right way to make the fabric really special. That's what the Japan Indigo Gunmetal does so well. It starts with a pure, dark inky blue warp. A tight weave gives it a touch more saturation than most denims. You see small neps dotting the surface as well, giving the fabric even more character. There is a nice fuziness to the surface with adds a cool vintage appeal. Instead of the standard white weft, this style has a gunmetal grey color. It's a subtle detail, but really cool if you choose to cuff this denim. A white ID finishes it off. All this complexity for only $79. Choose either our classic Straight fit, Skinny fit, or our Slim fit. More details available on our fit guide. So how does it work? We design boutique-quality handmade menswear. We create a campaign for an item, you back it. Once the number of items backed reaches the campaign goal, the item is successfully funded and we start production. When do I pay? When you hit “Back it!”, you’re not paying immediately. We’ll validate your credit card number initially, and charge you when the item reaches its funding goal. If the item reaches its funding deadline without reaching its goal, you will not be charged. WHEN YOU APPROACH AN INDUSTRY FROM A TOTALLY NEW ANGLE, YOU CAN DO SOME PRETTY COOL THINGS. We use crowdsourcing to line up supply and demand for every product we make. This creates zero waste cycle and we return the savings to you. Our formerly $205-$269 selvedge jeans now start at $81. A $200 Japanese cotton Oxford button down is now only $69.
