Why are generic drugs cheaper? | By Ishan [Hindi] For developing a formula of a branded drug it requires lots of investments for research and development. In order to get that investments back they will charge more within that patent time, once the patent time is over any one can produce that medicine with same formula. So the cost of that medicine includes all costs incurred to develop the drug and benefits of the manufacturer. When it comes to Generic drug all that R&D costs will not be there so the generic drugs are cheaper. In India very few people are aware of this generic medicines, because of which people are spending more money on their medicines. That’s why recently Indian Government and The Medical Council of India (MCI) has mandated that generic names of drugs would have to be mentioned along with the brands in prescriptions to patients because there are so many medicines which are available in generics. Indian government is also encouraging the use of generic medicines by establishing some Jan Aushadhi Medical Stores in India and nowadays large number of retail generic outlets are appearing in the market and also there are some players who are selling generic medicines online like genericwala. I have switched over to buying generic medicines rather than the branded medicines and i usually order it online because it is cheaper and convenient for me. This video highlights the stops & starts, successes & failures that often result in low-cost options for many people. Keep in mind as you watch that only 2 out of 10 drugs approved by the FDA will ever earn revenues that exceed average R&D costs. Are generic medicines just as good as the brand? In theory, yes generic medications are just as good when it comes to clinical effect and safety. But for some medications you can see differences in how they work for you. When a new drug comes to the market, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gives the drug company a exclusive rights to produce and market the drug until their patent runs out. In order to do this, the new company has to show the FDA that their version of the drug is bioequivalent to the original. There’s a very complex definition of bioequivalence on the Code of Federal Regulations website. https://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?SID=e835732c9ae36c33e32f4731c2e1504e&mc=true&node=se21.5.314_13&rgn=div8 Here’s a simplified version: a generic drug is bioequivalent if there is no significant difference in the way the active ingredient of the drug becomes available in your body if you take it at the same dose as the original. A significant difference is defined by bioequivalence limits which the FDA sets as 80% - 125%. These percentages refer to the range of the peak concentration of the drug and how much is absorbed over time. Excipients are the inactive ingredients that are not held to the standard of bioequivalence. These inactive ingredients can make a difference in side effects and how the medication works for you. Some examples of excipients: Fillers Binders Coating – enteric coating Disintigrants Sweetners Vehicle – liquid formulation, example mineral oil Disclaimer: All of the information on this channel is for educational purposes and not intended to be specific/personal medical advice from me to you. Generic and Brand Name Drugs- Is there a difference? Subscribe! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Wellness-20-1942668869082853/ by Shannon Hsu Sources: https://www.fda.gov/Drugs/ResourcesForYou/Consumers/BuyingUsingMedicineSafely/GenericDrugs/ucm167991.htm https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4196814/ www.dbsalliance.org/pdfs/GenericRx.pdf ------------------------------------------ Generic versus brand name drugs. Is one better than the other? People might be confused or even stressed when choosing which medicine to buy because there’s a lot of misconceptions about it. Some people think that because a drug is generic and cheaper than the brand name version, it doesn’t work as well, it’s not as safe to use, or the quality is not as good. On the other hand, because brand name drugs are more expensive, they have to be better in every way, right? Well, that isn’t really true. Drugs generally have a common brand name and a generic name. For example, both Advil and Motrin are branded versions of ibuprofen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug used to treat fevers, pain, and inflammation. The active pharmaceutical ingredients, or APIs, for both brand name and generic versions are exactly the same, so they essentially work the same. The FDA even requires that the generic medicine’s label to be the same as the brand-name medicine’s label. The differences are in the excipients, or inactive ingredients that affect appearance, taste, and fillers to make up the drug, but these do not affect how the drug works. Generic drugs still follow the same strict standards in manufacturing as the brand name drugs to ensure safety, effectiveness, and overall quality. They are pharmaceutically equivalent, meaning they have the same strength, dosage, form, and mode of administration. They are also bioequivalent, meaning they have the same effect on your body in the same amount of time. Of course, if you are allergic to certain ingredients or have questions about which medication to take, you should always ask your doctor or pharmacist. After all, they know about your specific conditions the best. The reason why brand name drugs are more expensive is because when they are first discovered, the company files a patent on that drug, which means that they are the only ones allowed to make, market, and sell that drug. Since the drug is brand new, the company needs to spend a lot of time and money to research and carefully conduct clinical trials to improve the drug’s safety and effectiveness. After the patent expires, which can be up to 20 years, then other companies can also start making the same drug. Since the drug has already been in the market for a while, other companies don’t have to start from scratch to manufacture it, meaning they also don’t have to do all the tests and research for it. Because normally several companies are approved to make the generic drug, competition in the marketplace also helps to make the cost a lot cheaper, usually about 85% less than the brand name version! Helping people be more informed in their decisions can help save a lot of money. According to the IMS Health Institute, generic drugs saved the U.S. healthcare system $1.67 trillion from 2007 to 2016. In the long run, this can significantly help lower healthcare cost and make it affordable for everyone. So next time you go out to buy your drugs, you know you can save yourself some money and safely go for the generic drug instead.

With very few exceptions, generics are as good as their brand name alternative. And although I didn't mention in the video, if quality is a concern, consider Children's Tylenol, which is the quintessential "brand", has been plagued with quality and consistency issues.

It is commonly accepted that something that is less money is of poorer quality. Is there a difference between brand name and generic medications? Generic products like no name products on grocery store shelves are often characterized as being of poorer quality than the brand name product. Generic drugs are not like no name potato chips. Generic drugs go through rigorous studies to prove that they are bioequivalent meaning that it has the same drug, same dose and same route of administration before being put on the market. The only difference between a generic and a brand name drug are the excipients. These are binder’s fillers, food coloring, or flavouring. They are not exactly the same, but they work the exact same. Branding seems to increase the placebo effect associated with a treatment, This is probably because people associate branding with higher quality and expect that they will work better.
