Genesis: A new beginning for Hyundai in the luxury car market

Earlier this month... Hyundai announced the Korean auto giant will be taking its line of luxury cars under the Genesis brand... to try and crash the luxury car market. Kwon Jang-Ho takes a look at its prospects and possible bumps in the road. It′s a new start for Hyundai. Like Toyota, which created a luxury car brand called Lexus in 1989, Hyundai is now re-launching their Genesis line of cars under a new brand to try and make inroads in the lucrative and growing luxury car market. Luxury car sales in the world have been increasing for the last 6 years. Last year sales reaching over 8 million, a number expected to increase to 10 million in the next 4 years. Hyundai has spent the last 6 years, trying to build up experience in the luxury car market, after releasing the first Genesis in 2009. ″As far as timing goes, the luxury car market is growing...and the Genesis brand image has been good so far, so they are looking to continue that momentum with this new strategy.″ But the biggest hurdle the Genesis brand must overcome will be getting customers to get past its parent-company′s name. ″In the U.S. Hyundai has really positioned themselves well as a value brand, and that doesn′t necessarily scream ′luxury′. So I think they may have an uphill battle to change consumer′s minds about that. I can′t say that they will be unsuccessful, but I think it′s definitely going to be a challenge, and it′s going to take a long period of time.″ But that image may already be shifting. Although global sales of luxury cars have been increasing, it has not been great year in the U.S. market. Sales of established car names have dipped significantly in the last year. But sales of the Genesis rose almost 40%. Experts agree that Hyundai′s reputation has been improving, but to establish itself in the luxury market, much is left to be considered. ″They have to think long term...and to become a true luxury brand more consideration needs to be taken into its philosophy and desired position in the market.″ ″Hyundai has become one of the biggest names in the global auto industry. Apple has taken a beating in the last few weeks, shedding about two billion dollars in market capitalization. However, the company is still a winner because of the Apple Watch. Anybody that matters in fashion is wearing it, marking Apple as one of the world’s top luxury brands. A big winner you might not have heard of: Palantir. The company builds software that ties databases together, making it easier to search and analyze information. It recently ranked fourth on a list of the most valuable startups, following Uber, Xiaomi, and Airbnb. Palantir booked more than one billion dollars in 2014, cementing its position among the unicorns. The other big winner here is the U.S.: 72 of the 108 unicorns are based in the U.S., while only nine hail from Europe, pointing to the country’s dearth of innovation. Another major winner: tennis. With the U.S. Open set to start next week, the sport’s social media season is in full swing. Only basketball and football players have more followers than tennis stars. We took a closer look at social media popularity and found that Rafael Nadal has the most followers overall, with an impressive 23 million across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Maria Sharapova is the most popular tennis player on Facebook with more than 14.5 million followers, while Serena Williams dominates Instagram with more than one million. However, the most important metric for brands is who does the best job integrating their sponsored messages. The winner here? Andy Murray, who integrates Standard Life and Under Armour into his social media missives. Our final winner this week: Imgur. The most popular image sharing platform in the world, Imgur sees more than 60 billion images viewed per month and has over 150 million active users — double the traffic of Pinterest. Frequently dubbed Pinterest for guys, Imgur has a 75% male audience, and now that the platform has opened to advertising, brands have a chance to appeal to the elusive millennial male demographic. 2018 Audi A8 - INTERIOR
Luxury lounge: the interior Freedom is the defining design feature with a new luxury slant. This explains the A8’s resemblance to a lavish, spacious lounge. Compared to the predecessor model, it has grown substantially in length in both body versions. The range of equipment and materials is extensive, with every detail radiating superlative bespoke quality – from the perforation in the seat upholstery to the electrically opened and closed shutters on the air vents. The classiest seat in the new Audi flagship model is in the rear right – the optional relaxation seat in the A8 L that comes with four different adjustment options and a footrest. In this seat, the passenger can warm and massage the soles of their feet on a unit with multiple settings incorporated into the back of the front-passenger seat. The new comfort head restraints complete the experience. The rear passengers can also control an array of functions such as ambient lighting, the new HD Matrix reading lights and seat massage, plus make private phone calls, via a separate operating unit. The rear seat remote, with its OLED display as large as a smartphone, is a removable unit housed in the center armrest. Fingertip response: the controls The luxury sedan’s interior deliberately adopts a reductive design; the interior architecture is clear and with a strictly horizontal orientation. Audi carries its high quality standards into the digital age with a radically new operating concept. It does away with the familiar rotary pushbutton and touchpad of the predecessor model. The instrument panel is kept largely clear of buttons and switches. At its center is a 10.1-inch touchscreen display which, when off, blends almost invisibly into the high-gloss black surround thanks to its black-panel look. The user interface appears as soon as the car is opened. The driver controls the Infotainment system with fingertip control on the large display. They can use a second touchscreen display on the center tunnel console to access the air conditioning and comfort functions as well as make text inputs. When the driver activates a function in the upper or lower display, they hear and feel a click by way of confirmation. The glass-look operating buttons respond in the same way. The combination of acoustic and tactile feedback along with the use of common touch gestures such as swiping make the new MMI touch response especially safe, intuitive and quick to use. The A8 can also engage in intelligent conversation. The driver can activate an array of functions in the automobile using a new, natural form of voice control. Information on destinations and media is either available on board or is delivered from the cloud at LTE speed. The extensive Audi connect range also includes traffic sign recognition and hazard information – innovative car-to-X services that draw on the swarm intelligence of the Audi fleet. The extensively optimized navigation is another new feature: It is self-learning, based on the route just driven. This provides the driver with intelligent search suggestions.
