Apple has taken a beating in the last few weeks, shedding about two billion dollars in market capitalization. However, the company is still a winner because of the Apple Watch. Anybody that matters in fashion is wearing it, marking Apple as one of the world’s top luxury brands. A big winner you might not have heard of: Palantir. The company builds software that ties databases together, making it easier to search and analyze information. It recently ranked fourth on a list of the most valuable startups, following Uber, Xiaomi, and Airbnb. Palantir booked more than one billion dollars in 2014, cementing its position among the unicorns. The other big winner here is the U.S.: 72 of the 108 unicorns are based in the U.S., while only nine hail from Europe, pointing to the country’s dearth of innovation. Another major winner: tennis. With the U.S. Open set to start next week, the sport’s social media season is in full swing. Only basketball and football players have more followers than tennis stars. We took a closer look at social media popularity and found that Rafael Nadal has the most followers overall, with an impressive 23 million across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Maria Sharapova is the most popular tennis player on Facebook with more than 14.5 million followers, while Serena Williams dominates Instagram with more than one million. However, the most important metric for brands is who does the best job integrating their sponsored messages. The winner here? Andy Murray, who integrates Standard Life and Under Armour into his social media missives. Our final winner this week: Imgur. The most popular image sharing platform in the world, Imgur sees more than 60 billion images viewed per month and has over 150 million active users — double the traffic of Pinterest. Frequently dubbed Pinterest for guys, Imgur has a 75% male audience, and now that the platform has opened to advertising, brands have a chance to appeal to the elusive millennial male demographic. Luxury winemakers breaking away from cava brand

(23 Dec 2018) LEAD IN: In a competitive industry, Spain's cava producers are struggling to stand out from the crowd. Now nine producers in Catalonia have teamed up to create 'Corpinnat', a luxury brand which they hope will set them apart as high end winemakers.   STORY-LINE: 'Tis the season for wine to sparkle. But Catalonia's famous cava brand is suffering from an image problem, with many consumers viewing it as a down market version of champagne or prosecco. A record 90 million bottles of cava were sold across Spain in 2017. But the bulk of this type of white sparkling wine, sold both in the country and exported abroad, is usually of a low quality and sold at bargain prices. The Spanish Cava designation of origin refers to almost all sparkling white wines produced in Spain, regardless of their area, soil, climate, variety of grapes, method of elaboration or indeed quality. Usually bottles of cava sold at supermarkets end up on the same shelf, with little distinction between the good and the bad. In order to escape the cliche of a low-quality product, nine small and medium size cava wineries, in the Penedes coastal area south of Barcelona, are distancing themselves to the cava designation of origin and re-branding their sparkling wines as Corpinnat. These winemakers complain that overproduction of cheap fizzy wine is damaging the image of their luxury products. Xavier Gramona is the vice president of a winery bearing his family name. With a history of five generations of winemaking, Gramona only produces grand reserve cava with more than 30 months of ageing process. He explains the reason behind the idea of the Corpinnat classification. "Cava refers to all sparkling wines made in different zones in Spain. And it has not much differences of production model and quality about the different cavas made. People sometimes don't understand why we have cheap cava and a top cava. So Corpinnat is the idea that we can make cava out of a territory, a small one, with an identity and different levels of quality." Among the Corpinnat brotherhood is another small producer called Recaredo.   They create wines exclusively from their own vineyards, which follow a lengthy ageing process which can take up to 12 years. Recaredo produces a wine with a dry taste and aged in bottles with natural cork stoppers. The brand's top product retails at 150 euros (175 US$). Ton Mata of Recaredo explains that there is a difference in soil, types of grapes and climate between cava and champagne. "We believe that over here we have a very different history, varieties and Mediterranean climate. And all this gives us an opportunity to explain to the world that here in the Mediterranean area we elaborate long aged sparkling wines which are very dry, subtle and elegant. Very different from champagne. And with a criteria for quality equal or even better than champagne." The 95 hectares of vineyards of Llopart stand in the highest hills of Penedes region where moist winds from the Mediterranean Sea keep the vines from getting too hot. With their first bottle of cava produced 131 years ago, this old-school family of winemakers is the second oldest producer in the region. They produce an estimated half a million bottles each year with a minimum ageing of 20 months. 70 per cent of their production is sold in Catalonia and the remaining 30 in the rest of Spain and abroad, mainly in the US, Russia and the rest of the EU. Earlier this month... Hyundai announced the Korean auto giant will be taking its line of luxury cars under the Genesis brand... to try and crash the luxury car market. Kwon Jang-Ho takes a look at its prospects and possible bumps in the road. It′s a new start for Hyundai. Like Toyota, which created a luxury car brand called Lexus in 1989, Hyundai is now re-launching their Genesis line of cars under a new brand to try and make inroads in the lucrative and growing luxury car market. Luxury car sales in the world have been increasing for the last 6 years. Last year sales reaching over 8 million, a number expected to increase to 10 million in the next 4 years. Hyundai has spent the last 6 years, trying to build up experience in the luxury car market, after releasing the first Genesis in 2009. ″As far as timing goes, the luxury car market is growing...and the Genesis brand image has been good so far, so they are looking to continue that momentum with this new strategy.″ But the biggest hurdle the Genesis brand must overcome will be getting customers to get past its parent-company′s name. ″In the U.S. Hyundai has really positioned themselves well as a value brand, and that doesn′t necessarily scream ′luxury′. So I think they may have an uphill battle to change consumer′s minds about that. I can′t say that they will be unsuccessful, but I think it′s definitely going to be a challenge, and it′s going to take a long period of time.″ But that image may already be shifting. Although global sales of luxury cars have been increasing, it has not been great year in the U.S. market. Sales of established car names have dipped significantly in the last year. But sales of the Genesis rose almost 40%. Experts agree that Hyundai′s reputation has been improving, but to establish itself in the luxury market, much is left to be considered. ″They have to think long term...and to become a true luxury brand more consideration needs to be taken into its philosophy and desired position in the market.″ ″Hyundai has become one of the biggest names in the global auto industry. And through the Genesis brand, it hopes to establish itself in the luxury car market as well. Kwon Jang-Ho, Arirang News.″

(1 Feb 2019) LEADIN: In a competitive industry, Spain's cava producers are struggling to stand out from the crowd. Now a battle of the brands has begun with nine producers in Catalonia teaming up to create 'Corpinnat', a luxury brand which they hope will set them apart as high end winemakers. 'Corpinnat' producers have now announced that they have left the Cava Denomination of Origin and the first bottles of sparkling wine under the collective brand name of CORPINNAT will be launched in the market this spring. STORYLINE: Catalonia's famous cava brand is suffering from an image problem, with many consumers viewing it as a down market version of champagne or prosecco. A record 90 million bottles of cava were sold across Spain in 2017. But the bulk of this type of white sparkling wine, sold both in the country and exported abroad, is usually of a low quality and sold at bargain prices. The Spanish Cava designation of origin refers to almost all sparkling white wines produced in Spain, regardless of their area, soil, climate, variety of grapes, method of elaboration or indeed quality. Usually bottles of cava sold at supermarkets end up on the same shelf, with little distinction between the good and the bad. In order to escape the cliche of a low-quality product, nine small and medium size cava wineries, in the Penedes coastal area south of Barcelona, are distancing themselves to the cava designation of origin and re-branding their sparkling wines as Corpinnat. These winemakers complain that overproduction of cheap fizzy wine is damaging the image of their luxury products. Xavier Gramona is the vice president of a winery bearing his family name. With a history of five generations of winemaking, Gramona only produces grand reserve cava with more than 30 months of ageing process. He explains the reason behind the idea of the Corpinnat classification. "Cava refers to all sparkling wines made in different zones in Spain. And it has not much differences of production model and quality about the different cavas made. People sometimes don't understand why we have cheap cava and a top cava. So Corpinnat is the idea that we can make cava out of a territory, a small one, with an identity and different levels of quality." Among the Corpinnat brotherhood is another small producer called Recaredo.   They create wines exclusively from their own vineyards, which follow a lengthy ageing process which can take up to 12 years. Recaredo produces a wine with a dry taste and aged in bottles with natural cork stoppers. The brand's top product retails at 150 euros (175 US$). Ton Mata of Recaredo explains that there is a difference in soil, types of grapes and climate between cava and champagne. "We believe that over here we have a very different history, varieties and Mediterranean climate. And all this gives us an opportunity to explain to the world that here in the Mediterranean area we elaborate long aged sparkling wines which are very dry, subtle and elegant. Very different from champagne. And with a criteria for quality equal or even better than champagne." The 95 hectares of vineyards of Llopart stand in the highest hills of Penedes region where moist winds from the Mediterranean Sea keep the vines from getting too hot. With their first bottle of cava produced 131 years ago, this old-school family of winemakers is the second oldest producer in the region. They produce an estimated half a million bottles each year with a minimum ageing of 20 months.
