Are you thinking about using Instagram to promote your business? Or about stepping up your efforts on Instagram? What role should an Instagram content strategy play in your plans? Our video interview with entrepreneur and Instagram specialist Sarah Stenhouse is a great starting point for companies weighing up the potential of Instagram. Sarah is CEO and Founder of Oodls, an online tool designed to make it easy for marketers and businesses to buy the rights to images generated by users on Instagram. She began by explaining how the idea for Oodls came about. "In 2015 I was working in a marketing agency, I had a client who wanted to do a Father's Day campaign. "He didn't have a lot of budget so there wasn't the option to do our own photography. It was really based on stock libraries, meaning I spent too much time looking through the larger libraries on the web for images representing Father's Day. "But they were very American, and this was for a Scottish client, so there just wasn't anything on there. "I was an avid user of Instagram and I knew there were loads of images on there to use. I thought 'there must be a service where they clear the licensing for you' but no one was doing it. "So I thought 'I'm going to go for it, I'm going to make this a thing'." Sarah gave an insight into just how essential Instagram has become for many businesses and outlined how Instagram users could be compared to Facebook users. "Instagram is the fastest-growing social networking behind WeeChat, so if you have a business now you need to be seeing it as one of your 'bread and butters' like Facebook or Twitter. Especially with the younger demographic on Instagram now. "If you look at the stats for Facebook, there's always that curve of younger people who are hungry for new technology and a more mature audience who then start to use it and that's what happening to Facebook. If you are trying to target a younger demographic I would definitely say you need to be on Instagram." She explained that Instagram is still a channel many "businesses don't know how to even go about using". "It's purely visual and it may be perceived to need a lot of effort and resource. "One of our benefits is that we allow you to find user-generated content so it's not going to be a huge effort for you to start an Instagram channel." How will the 2012 purchase of Instagram by Facebook change the platform? "They left Instagram alone for a long while and didn't really get involved with how it was run. It's only recently, with Facebook starting to see a decline with their platform's growth, that they've put more attention onto Instagram. "Things are starting to slowly turn towards the way Facebook have been doing things, so we're starting to see ads a lot more now. "Instagram isn't fully monetised yet and there are hacks to get around it without ads, but on Facebook if you want to make an impact you really need to think about ads. "It's still early days, the channel won't turn into Facebook. I feel like a lot of the learnings from Facebook are a blessing as they won't come into Instagram." Sarah shared some advice on publishing the right content on Instagram. "I believe that you shouldn't have a social media profile unless you have a plan to post in it consistently. There's nothing worse than going to an Instagram account and there's three posts there and it hasn't been touched for months. "Have a look at what your competitors are doing and have a look at feedback from your customers such as what are they asking for and what interests them most in your blogs. "What articles worked on your blog? What has been getting most engagement for you on Facebook? "You might want to post daily or you might want to post every two days, it really depends how much resource you have. Go for quality over quantity. "You can post anything on Instagram, as long as it is engaging for your audience. What we do as a business might not fit someone else's business. "You really have to get into the mindset of your users: what type of content would they want to see? What's the goal? Do you want them to engage with your posts? Do you want them to link through to your biog? "I would take time to research the space you're going to post and, of course, look at user-generated content." What is USER-GENERATED CONTENT? What does USER-GENERATED CONTENT mean? USER-GENERATED CONTENT meaning - USER-GENERATED CONTENT definition - USER-GENERATED CONTENT explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. User-generated content (UGC) is defined as "any form of content such as blogs, wikis, discussion forums, posts, chats, tweets, podcasts, digital images, video, audio files, advertisements and other forms of media that was created by users of an online system or service, often made available via social media websites". It is also called user-created content (UCC). The term and concept entered mainstream usage during 2005, having arisen in web publishing and new media content production circles. It is used for a wide range of applications, including problem processing, news, entertainment, advertising, gossip and research. It is an example of the democratization of content production; whereas during the 1970s and 1980s, traditional "gatekeepers" such as newspaper editors, publishers and news shows approved all content and information before it was aired or published, in the 1990s and 2000s, as media production through new technologies has become more accessible, user friendly and affordable to the general public, large numbers of amateur individuals are able to post text, digital photos and digital videos online, with little or no "gatekeepers" or filters. Additionally, user-generated content may also employ a combination of open source, free software, and flexible licensing or related agreements to further reduce the barriers to collaboration, skill-building and discovery ("'UGC'") has also gained in popularity over the last decade, as user bases have grown on social media and content-based sharing sites. UGC may constitute only a portion of a website. For example, there are sites where the majority of content is prepared by administrators, but numerous ancillary submissions are made by the site's users, such as product reviews or comments, and UGC cannot be used commercially. UGC may be monitored by website administrators to avoid offensive content or language, copyright infringement issues, or simply to determine if the content posted is relevant to the site's general theme. There may be little or no barrier to the act of uploading user-generated content, such as memberships or fees. As a result, there are inordinate amounts of UGC that, in addition to creating a corporate asset, may also contain data that can be regarded as a liability. The University of Illinois concluded from its 2012 research that one-third of all UGC web reviews were fake, either with the purpose of boosting or denigrating a product. The advent of user-generated content marked a shift among media organizations from creating online content to providing facilities for amateurs to publish their own content. User-generated content has also been characterized as Citizen Media as opposed to the 'Packaged Goods Media' of the past century. Citizen Media is audience-generated feedback and news coverage. People give their reviews and share stories in the form of user-generated and user-uploaded audio and user-generated video. The former is a two-way process in contrast to the one-way distribution of the latter. Conversational or two-way media is a key characteristic of so-called Web 2.0 which encourages the publishing of one's own content and commenting on other people's. The role of the passive audience therefore has shifted since the birth of New Media, and an ever-growing number of participatory users are taking advantage of the interactive opportunities, especially on the Internet to create independent content. Grassroots experimentation then generated an innovation in sounds, artists, techniques and associations with audiences which then are being used in mainstream media. The active, participatory and creative audience is prevailing today with relatively accessible media, tools and applications, and its culture is in turn affecting mass media corporations and global audiences.

Smartphone cameras and social media networks allow for the incredibly fast distribution of user-generated content (UGC) which is increasingly important in the coverage of news stories and live events. COGNITUS is a system that coordinates the capture of footage from many different users and up-converts this – all within an interface that allows the producer to easily create programmes and packages from the material and then distribute them to audiences in ultra-high definition (UHD). More on the blog: http://magnetmediafilms.com/blog This week on the Magnet Minute, I talk about the possible perils of asking for user-generated content. It sounds like a great idea at first. You think: "let's invite our Twitter followers to ask questions and we'll answer them on the spot." Or "let's have them tweet photos using a promoted hashtag." The goal is to get enough followers to tweet and retweet that the brand establishes a trending topic and gets free exposure. There's just one big problem: the Internet has no filter, no set decorum, and no accountability. National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell learned this the hard way when he started a Twitter hashtag, #AskCommish, inviting fans to pose questions about the league. While there were a few decent inquiries, many followers used the invite as a way to express their opinions of the commissioner, with questions like: "Mr. Goodell - as a feckless multi-millionaire who shamelessly shills for billionaires, have you considered a run for Congress?" and "How do you govern a league with your head buried deep in your ass?" Fortunately for the commissioner, the NFL brand is strong enough to withstand this sort of embarrassment. The New York Police Department ran into the same problem last month when it asked followers to post photos of officers using the hashtag #myNYPD. It wasn't long before the Twitter-verse submitted photos with myriad accusations of police brutality. In 2012, McDonald's created the #McDstories hashtag, asking customers to share their favorite McDonald's memories. The company yanked the campaign after two hours when it received hundreds of "memories" of fingernails found in burgers and bouts of food poisoning. That's not to say you can't ask for user-generated content. You just have to be strategic about it. Opening the floodgates invites every wannabe comic and disgruntled customer to damn your brand in order to boost theirs. Instead, asking for user-generated content should be done in such a way that you can moderate and maintain some control over your brand image. Bench wanted a social idea that made them synonymous with hoodies. In response, myclever™ Agency delivered a social-first, user-generated campaign that did just that... and connected the brand with millions. http://www.lovemyhood.me/ https://www.bench.co.uk/hoody/ http://www.mycleveragency.com/ Bench #LoveMyHood Showreel Script Bench is a global streetwear brand, with key markets across Europe, the USA, and Canada. They wanted to create buzz about their core product, the technical hoodie, by “taking ownership of its iconic silhouette; celebrating the hood, its heritage, and the neighbourhoods where it’s worn.” The brief was simple. The reach was global. The answer was social. myclever Agency connected Bench with the emotions people have for their favourite hoodies, by creating a social-first, user-generated campaign. The brand’s biggest fans tagged and shared their best photos and videos to LoveMyHood. A responsive, multilingual microsite pulled this content from Twitter and Instagram, before it was approved and hosted on lovemyhood.me. LoveMyHood kick-started on social media, quickly growing into a global campaign with out- of-home and point-of-sale assets helping to spread the word. We got together with trend- setters at live events in the coolest urban hotspots, getting popular fashion bloggers, photographers, illustrators and artists from all over the world to connect with Bench clothing and celebrate people’s pride in their hometown, or “Hoods.” Influencers and brand advocates engaged with these events, creating content that amplified the campaign to a global audience. This gave Bench incredible insights into their biggest fans. With a modest budget and expert granular targeting, we served unique content to Bench’s core audience: 24 to 28 year olds in UK, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, US and Canada. The results speak for themselves. Were Bench happy? Well, here’s what they said... The response to LoveMyHood led to it becoming the focus of Bench’s brand marketing strategy. It has now been rolled out globally. LoveMyHood aligned Bench with Hoodies, reached a global audience and brought the brand to life on social media.
