Shadow Stripe Ribbed Socks Dark Navy Blue and Royal Blue - https://gentl.mn/2jCez02 3. Fort Belvedere Knit Ties - https://gentl.mn/2CdPEVG For a larger gentleman: If you, for example, wear a little one, it makes you look even bigger. If you have a small hat like this one with a not so wide crown and a very short brim, it makes the person look automatically bigger; so that's something you should always avoid. On the other hand, a larger hat makes everything more proportional, more suitable, and the wearer doesn't look oversized. The same is true for the hat band, ideally, you go with something quite wide that has a very low contrast to the hat, ideally in the same color. If you're a bigger gentleman and you want to snap your brim down, that's okay but rather than having just a slight snap, try to snip it all the way down and get a really deep snap, that way it suits your silhouette more. The brim should be rather wide, at least two and a half inches which are about six and a quarter centimeters. Fedoras are a great hat for larger men and so are Homburg hats with a certain size. Short, slim, or the modest man: If you're shorter, you'll always benefit from wearing a hat because it elongates your body and makes you look taller. Rather than having a rather wide crown, it pays to have it pinched to a point because it just flatters your short silhouette more. Also, rather than going with a tone in tone hat band, it pays to switch it up for something that's contrasting. Tall and thin men: Ideally, you don’t want to accentuate your height even more which means don’t go for a high crown. Instead, go for medium to low crowns. Facial Features: Big Nose: Rather than having it curled up, you definitely want to snap it down. Rather than going for a very pointy pinch, go for something that's a little wider. Slim brims that are snapped up or just slightly snapped down are your enemy because they will just accentuate the size of your nose. Receding chin: Definitely make sure to avoid a big hat and a full crown because that will just highlight your receding chin, likewise, don't snap your hat too much because it's not an advantageous look for you. Chiseled features: you want a hat with a slight pinch on the crown that is not too small and you want a nice deep snap. It's definitely best to not tilt your hat but keep it straight so everything looks more proportional. In order not to highlight your chiseled features, I urge you to stay away from a very tall crown or a very slim brim. Round faces: If you're a man with a round face, avoid getting hats that are too small. You don't want something that has a really pointy crown, and you also don't want to have a very slim brim that is not snapped down all the way; just makes you look goofy and disproportionately large. Protruding ears: it's very important that you have a wider brim that is snapped down and not snapped up. The brim is important because it doesn't highlight the size of your ears or the shape, but it rather helps to cover them up. Opt for a wider crown that is not too pointy, although a little point is alright. Also, go with a wide hatband that's ideally somewhat contrasting because of your ears, it really pays to not just snap down the hat in the front but also in the back. If you have protruding ears, you definitely want to avoid small hats with shorter brims and anything that is pointed up. #hatsformen #menshats #notsponsored --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Want to stay updated? Want to know how to wear Fedoras the dapper way?https://gentl.mn/fedora-hat-guide Want to find out how to size a hat? Click here: https://gentl.mn/2wVK4oc SHOP THE VIDEO: 1. Shantung Striped Brown, Bottle Green and White Silk Tie: https://gentl.mn/2fQBwea 2. Over the calf shadow striped socks: https://gentl.mn/2vIBnz4 3. Burnt Orange Silk Pocket Square with Dotted Motifs and Paisley: https://gentl.mn/2uO7deL Today's video is all about the fedora hat. We discuss what it is, what it is not, the history, what to look for when you buy one and how to wear it so you look your best. What makes a fedora? Basically, a fedora hat is a snap brim hat. it's called that way because you can actually snap the brim down. A fedora is typically pinched in the middle and then again in the front. One of the big hallmarks and probably the reason it's so popular is that the Fedora is shapeable in many different forms. Next up is the brim of the fedora. First of all, you can have different sizes. You can have very short brims, medium brims, and wide brims. Again, if you want to stay timeless, something around in the middle length is probably your best bet. Of course, it all comes down to what your face shape is and so larger brims work better for some persons and shorter for others. The brim of the fedora can be snapped down in the front or snapped down all the way around or snaps up in the front and down in the back. In terms of material, most fedoras these days are made from wolf felt which is basically hair from sheep that is felted which is not woven but the hair is taken together, rubbed together until they intertwine and they don't come apart anymore. The next step up would be a rabbit or hare felt which is finer and softer and it usually makes for a great hat. The very best qualities are beaver felt hats and they usually use hair from the belly of the beaver. In terms of hat decoration, most hats will feature a band on the outside and there can be a bow, there can be you can have different kind of ribbons, sometimes you have little things that dangle on them, other times you can have a really wide band or a slim band maybe a leather band and sometimes you can even see people that add feathers to their hat just to highlight the individual character. So how did the fedora get its name? In the 1890s, there was a play titled Fedora and at the time, all men wore hats on the street. The everyday man didn't have much money and could only afford one hat that had to serve multiple purposes. The fedora was great because it could be shaped in any form needed. At that time, no gentleman would have ever worn a fedora hat. The Homburg hat is their go to choice. A gentleman would maybe only wear a fedora hat in the countryside for very casual outings. Just like many other things in menswear, the Prince of Wales wore a fedora in 1924 and it became hugely popular that way because he liked softer things. So how should you wear a fedora hat in this day and age? Basically, you want to wear it with a classically inspired outfit which means a jacket or a suit. If you want you could wear it with a chalk stripe or pinstripe suit that's rather bold. As the fedora is a classic piece of headwear that's not worn a lot anymore, I suggest you go with like double-breasted suits, peak lapels, maybe single breasted suits with a vest like a three-piece suit or with a contrasting vest. You can also have accessories such as cufflinks or rings maybe a tie bar or a collar bar because it just underlines the entire classic look of the fedora. Wear the fedora the right season. A felt hat is great in the winter and it's cold outside maybe in the fall and also in spring but not during the summer. FEDORA HAT ETIQUETTE The golden rule is whenever you're inside, take the hat off. Also, if you wear a fedora hat, try to avoid sunglasses because it simply looks odd and over-the-top. #fedorahats #menshats #notsponsored -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Most Popular videos: How to accept a compliment - https://youtu.be/_EKXNmM1PUo 101 things that change when you dress up - https://youtu.be/JyGDd_iYaCI How to tie a Bow Tie - https://youtu.be/2I3cfa0BOOc --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Want to stay updated? Knit Tie in Mottled Blue and Brown - https://gentl.mn/2PqAGB9 TRILBY Also referred to as a sloucher or slouch hat and named for the heroine of an 1894 novel by George Du Maurier. The trilby is sort of a little brother to the standard fedora. Like the fedora, the trilby also features a creased tapered crown with a front pinch but it's slightly more streamlined with a shorter snap brim which usually features a simple sewn edge and sometimes a very narrow band across the bottom of the crown. Originally associated primarily with the trench coat, the trilby evolved in the 1920s to a softer hat worn often in the English countryside and also at the racetrack. For these reasons, it's typically seen as a slightly more informal hat than the standard Fedora but not by much. In recent years, small trilbies with very narrow brims often printed in loud patterns across the hat and made from synthetic materials became a popular fashion item, however, these types of trilbies also quickly developed something of an unsavory reputation and brought the standard fedora down with them to a certain extent. However, if you stick to wearing a classically styled trilby, as I do for most of my own personal hats, you'll be able to overcome this stigma. Also, they do look particularly good on men with strong facial features so take that into consideration as well. HOMBURG Next to the top hat, the Homburg is the most formal of all men's hats. It's named from the German spa and resort town where it was first seen and also where it was popularized by King Edward the seventh when he was then still Prince of Wales, on vacation in the 1890s. Proper for both day and evening wear, the black or dark blue Homburg is worn with a dark business suit, stroller suit, or tuxedo depending on the occasion and also pairs well with a Chesterfield overcoat in winter in other various colors. Also, if you'd like to check out our guide on proper Black Tie attire as well as our guide on morning dress, you can consult those guides here. The Homburg is constructed with much more stiffness than the fedora and features a brim with a slight curl around the edge that's also typically faced in the same sort of ribbon that you'll find around the crown. Speaking of the crown, the homburg's crown is typically very tall and also features a center dent. A favorite hat of diplomats and politicians like Winston Churchill and also featured prominently in The Godfather film series, the Homburg typically looks best on old and more distinguished gentlemen as well as men with defined facial features. You can still wear a Homburg if you have a rounder face, however, just try to find one with a slightly lower crown and a bit of a wider brim to balance things out. PORK PIE Also called the English pastry hat, the pork pie got its name from its telescoped crown which features a slight lip around the upper edge of the crown and therefore looks similar to a traditional English meat pie. Normally featuring a snap brim, pork pies flourished among college students in the 1930s and were also popularized by Hollywood stars like Fred Astaire and Cary Grant. Pork pies are definitely on the more casual end of the spectrum as full brimmed hats go and they can tend to give the wearer a slightly squat appearance. As such, shorter men and men with rounder faces should exercise caution when wishing to wear a pork pie. Out of the styles that we covered today, which one do you think that you might be able to incorporate into your wardrobe first? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Want to stay updated? Brown Socks with Green and Cream Clocks - https://gentl.mn/2wuge9C So first of all, what is a flat cap or a newsboy cap? Obviously, I'm wearing one here right now and it's made out of a woven fabric. It's not knitted, there's no felt, like in typical menswear hats, overall, it has a very level and trim silhouette based on the one-piece construction, meaning, the top is made out of one piece of fabric and then you have seams on the side to get the distinct shape. Another characteristic is that the body off the top part of the hat is pulled over the brim. Generally, it's either sewn on or snapped on, that way, you get a triangular side profile that gives the hat its characteristic shape. Over the years, the flat cap has gotten many monikers so it's known as newsboy cap, cabbie, gatsby, IV, Jeff, duffer, duckbill, driving, you name it. If you want to learn all about the monikers, please check out the guide on our website here. So how do you wear a flat cap? First of all, if you get something made out of tweed just the way I'm wearing it here right now, you always will make sure you have a certain amount of contrast between the fabric on your hat and the rest of your outfit. Definitely, avoid flat caps that are very similar in color but not the same because that just looks off; it's like pairing a navy suit with a black pair of pants. Second of all, do shape the brim to your taste; that means you can actually move it like this and to curve it a little bit, you can tilt your hat and get the exact look you want. Don't wear your flat cap backwards because it just looks awkward. This is not a baseball hat, after all, it is more stylish brother. Four, don't worry a flat cap in the summer because it simply makes you overheat and sweat and it's unnecessary. Five, don't wear a flat cap unsnapped. Sometimes, you'll find flat caps that can be unflapped, however, that's a style that's usually associated with women in the 70s. So how should you buy a flat cap? First of all, it's important that it fits comfortably on your head. The flat cap was originally made from tweed by the wool fabrics or sometimes even cotton and that reason you should stick with those materials. In my opinion, tweed is really the best material because it has the depth of color, it keeps you warm, it's hard wearing, and it's just a wonderful fabric. To learn more about tweed, please check out our in-depth tweed guide, here. Sometimes, I've also seen denim caps or maybe leather caps or faux leather ones. I personally don't think it's a very advantageous look and I'd rather stick with the classic stuff. For that same reason, I stay away from patchwork flat hats or multi-pattern caps because they're simply too loud. Just like a bold red or really loud blue and green hat. The good thing about tweed is usually it comes in more subdued colors that suit the fall-winter season. At the same time, the color composition of the fabric is comprised of a range of different ones so it's very easy to combine it with other items in your wardrobe even though they don't match and contrast. So whenever you find flat caps that are either too bold or come in small, medium, and large, I suggest you skip them unless you know that they will fit you and that you'll like to wear them and they won't just be a fashion item that you have to throw away after a season. if you want to learn more about flat caps and what brands you might want to buy please check out our full guide on the website here. Last but not least, if you think a flat cap makes you look dated just browse the Internet and look for pictures of David Beckham or people like Brad Pitt which are obviously mainstream media celebrities and they can still pull it off and do so on a regular basis. #flatcap #newsboyhat #notsponsored -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Most Popular videos: How to accept a compliment - https://youtu.be/_EKXNmM1PUo 101 things that change when you dress up - https://youtu.be/JyGDd_iYaCI How to tie a Bow Tie - https://youtu.be/2I3cfa0BOOc --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Want to stay updated? this is called hand blocking. also known as: steaming, brushing and steaming, hand shaping.. hand blocking....It is usually not for hats that are really totaled, Although I have done some miracles on really dogged hats, it's more like a "shoe-shine for a hat" that is not damaged, but simply out of shape. It's aways done free of charge at our shop although some places charge a good amount...it's a lost art,and definitely hard to find places who do it this way.. , The more intensive "hat blocking" is done with wooden or metal molds called blocks. This is the way these hats are manufactured. To do this, you need a collection of different shaped blocks. It is between $20 and $40 to do this here..depending on the job. (it could be the brim, the crown, or both) This gets amazing results but also stiffens the hat somewhat..but you can take hats that are flattened like a book and make them perfect.. This you do when a hat just won't respond well to the steaming anymore.Or you want absolute perfection with an old hat. Otherwise, using steam and a trained eye can be more authentic, hand shaped..and old-timey looking, as well as giving you more freedom to shape it freely, creatively and with flair. of course, it can be done shakily by a novice or with grace and style, with smooth lines.and to the customers needs, to match his height,taste..you can really fine tune it by hand.. again,it's just as easy to mess it up by hand, while blocks are more predictable and easy to get right. But it usually costs a few bucks. it is a lot of work. I quickly demonstrate how to put a new crown shape into a fedora here.. We start off with a hat in so-so shape, open the crown, take out the creases and start over. The Teardrop is a more nostalgic crown shaping, popular in the Gangster era,1930's-1940's,it usually works best in bigger brims but can be used for short brims too, this is a short to medium,2" brim. (usually I use 2 1/2" brims or more for the teardrop, but again, any brim size is okay. The teardrop shaping is highly suggested for a person who likes a lower crown height..It lowers the crown by tucking it into itself, essentially. Although it has a low appearance, this crown shape actually works best for tall guys or folks with higher, taller heads, who need more depth to the crown. Sometimes a crown is too shallow for some people, the head bumps into the roof of the hat and doesn't sit down low enough. This happens a lot in center crease hats, The center crease has a big dent on top which sinks into the inside of the crown and doesn't allow for much depth or room for taller people, or just taller shaped heads. If you notice, my first step is starting with a basic center crease across the center of the crown. By doing this, I'm basically setting the height of my teardrop, the height of the ront, and the back. The height or depth of the teardrop is what separates the good jobs from the bad ones. A common mistake is to slope it too low in the back..make sure the back is deep enough, but still lower than the front of the hat. Crease it,set your height, and look at it from a profile(side) view, if it looks pleasing to you, continue..if not, steam out the crease and start again. The little bubble on the top of the teardrop that give the wearer more depth on top. the head fits into the little bubble and just fits more efficiently for some. You can steam the center of that bubble, and then put the hat on while warm(not HOT,warm..don't get burned) This will make an impression of the wearer's head and give u the right depth, you can trace around his head with tour finger and custom shape that bubble to just the height he needs, not a drop more. Go back and neaten it up after you make the impression. I will cover this technique soon. If you like a 40's "film noir" look, or need more depth,a lower looking crown, or just like the way a teardrop looks, you can usually turn a standard center creased hat into a teardrop easily, if you bring it to me, I will do it for free, usually while you wait. We cannot shape a crushable wool felt hat in this fashion, only hats that say,"genuine fur felt" inside. I can tell you if your hat is fur felt or not. usually a fur felt hat will cost over $100 new. there are a few exceptions, some wool hats can be reshaped, but not as easily as a fur felt, and some wool felts cannot be shaped at all. Straws can be shaped too, but only some can, depending on the type of straw it is made from. There will be another video getting more into the details of this shaping, different types of teardrops, how to vary it, how to choose whether a hat is right for this shape and basically more of the fine tuning that will make this shape more authentic, nostalgic and how to vary it to suit the wearer's head. Any questions can be directed to me here or at the shop,Pork Pie Hatters in the east village, 9th street,NYC

Basically, it is a white summer hat that is woven from the straw of the Toquilla Palm. Even though it's called Panama hat, it's originally made in Ecuador and it has never been made in Panama. In Ecuador, it's better known as the SOMBRERO DE PAJA TOQUILLA which means as much as a straw hat. Panama hats have been woven in Ecuador since the 17th century and they've been imported since the 19th century to Europe, the Americas, and Asia. So how did the Panama hat got its name? During the 1834 Gold Rush in Canada, when miners went from South America to Canada, they saw those hats in Panama and so they got their name. On top of that, Theodore Roosevelt popularised the hat style and even cemented the Panama name when he was wearing one observing the Panama Canal and of course, being photographed. So how is a Panama made? Basically, you take the core fibers of the toquilla plant which are also known as cogollos. The cogollos are the hearts of the palm tree and they're carefully separated by hand and then briefly boiled. Since they're wet, they have to be sun-dried or air dried and once that's done, the fiber is bleached with sulfur smoke to give it the original Panama light color. Sometimes, you can also find uncolored hats but they have a much more yellow appearance. To get really fine hats, the palm tree fibers are split into even finer straw fibers. The weaving of a Panama hat begins at the center of the crown. Once the crown is large enough, it's put in a dry pot and woven on top of a hat block at about waist height. Once the weave extends past the size of the hat block, the weaver adds additional blocks on top and pulls down the weave so it stays in place and it gets that hat shape. The entire process is physically quite tiring and depending on how fine your hat is, it can take anywhere from a few weeks up to several months to create one hat. Once the weaver gets to the edge of the brim, it's typically handed off to other artisans who finish the hat. Traditionally, a Panama hat has a loose back weave which is much more elegant than a cut and sewn edge. So when you want a quality hat, look for that edge because if it's back woven, it's of a much higher quality than if it’s cut and sewn. Typically, you have one person who starts the back weave, a second one that tightens it, and the third one cuts off the loose straw so it has a polished nice finish. If you have a very fine hat, they keep that excess straw and use it to maybe make repairs later. In the next step, the hats are washed and bleached with sulfur to make them softer and more suitable to wear as a wonderful summer hat. Subsequently, the hats are blocked or either brought to the US to head blockers who then get the hat the right shape. In my experience, the hats that come directly out of Ecuador usually have a very small range of different styles and shapes and are very limited. Because of that, quality Panama hats are usually brought raw at this stage to the US or to other countries which are then blocked by an experienced head blocker who can get exactly the shape the customer demands. Traditionally, every Panama hat was woven by hand but due to a high demand, most hats these days are machine woven. We head to the home of the historic hatmaker to witness the 52-stage process that has barely changed in a century. The name may no longer be universally familiar, but there was a time when this 160-year-old company was synonymous with fine gentlemen’s fedoras. At its peak, in the first half of the 20th century, Borsalino was crafting in excess of two million hats per year and employing 3,000 people. It dominated the market to such an extent that the word “borsalino” even appeared in the Oxford English Dictionary as a noun used to describe “a man’s wide-brimmed felt hat”. It made it into the movies, too. If you’ve watched Casablanca, you’ll have seen Hollywood legend Mr Humphrey Bogart wearing a Borsalino fedora. If you’ve watched Borsalino, a 1970 gangster film starring Messrs Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo, which was named after the hat-maker at Mr Delon’s request, then you’ll have seen plenty of them. Silver Eagle Claw Cufflinks with Lapis Lazuli Balls - https://gentl.mn/2rxaHhC Bill Thompson's original blog post: http://dresslikeagrownup.blogspot.com/2011/07/hatiquette.html A great many menswear sources, if they do offer advice on hat etiquette, will typically advise that the most basic rule to remember is to wear your hat when outdoors and to take it off indoors. While this advice may end up working out for the wearer, let's say 75 to 80 percent of the time, we believe that there's a better central starting point for approaching hat etiquette which is as follows: Wear your hat in public spaces and take it off in private spaces. Stated simply, a private space is any place where people live, work, or pay a fee to enter. Anything else is generally going to be considered public. Here then are some more specific examples of this philosophy in practice. A house is a private space but the foyer or entryway just inside the door can be considered a public space. This goes back to the era when a butler would typically greet guests at the door and take their hats and coats. Similarly, an apartment is a private space but their surrounding hallways, as well as the lobby, are public. This same general rule is typically true for hotels with the added caveat that spaces reserved specifically for hotel guests such as the pool or lounge are also considered private spaces. One unique distinction for apartment buildings, hotels, and other such multi florid spaces, an elevator is considered a private space. This goes back to the days when most elevators still had human operators. As such, you would consider the elevator the operator's office. Related to the concept of entry fees are membership dues. As such, any club with specific members is also considered to be a private space. And there you have it! Using this public space private space motto, the hatted gentleman can be sure that he's always observing proper etiquette when wearing his hat or as the case may be, not wearing it. The question remains, however, why remove the hat in private spaces, to begin with? The answer is that the uncovering of the head is a sign of deference that goes back millennia. It's usually done to signal an acknowledgment of intrusion or to show basic gratitude. In other words, the hallmarks of a gentleman. This brings us to one final piece of hat etiquette for today, the practice of tipping the hat to others while out and about. The tradition of tipping one's hat has its roots in bowing to show respect. A practice that was common across various cultures for centuries. When hats became the dominant fashion for men and bowing was still common practice, the hat would have to be removed when a man bent from the waist so that it didn't hit the floor. Bowing would gradually become less extreme over the course of the 19th century, culminating in the simple hat tip by the 20th century. These days in the 21st century, even that practice can seem a little outdated. If you're a regular hat wearer and feel totally comfortable in headwear, you can give a hat tip to people regardless of gender these days too but if you feel that the behavior would seem affected coming from you, you can go ahead and skip the tip. In conclusion then, even if you don't commit to memory every single example we outlined in today's video, you can still be sure that by following the basic model of the public space private space paradigm, you as a hat-wearing gentleman will be courteous with your stylish headwear. So which of the etiquette rules we covered today came as the biggest surprise to you? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Want to stay updated? WRITTEN PATTERN: https://wilmade.com/simple-double-brim-hat Note about the yarn! The yarn that I used in this video is different than what the pattern asks for. I only had enough Willow & Lark yarn to make 1 hat, so I had to use other (local) yarn to make a video tutorial. I used two strands because this other yarn was really thin. The hat on the picture is made with 1 strand Willow & Lark! Let me know which colors you're going to use.
