Panelists included: Ben Zimmer - University of Chicago AM'98, former writer of the New York Times Magazine's "On Language" column and Executive Producer of Visual Thesaurus and Vocabulary.com Carol Fisher Saller - Senior Manuscript Editor for the University of Chicago Press, editor of the popular Chicago Style Q+A and author of The Subversive Copy Editor Anita Samen - Managing Editor, Books Division, for the University of Chicago Press Jason Riggle - Assistant Professor of Linguistics at the University of Chicago and Director of the Chicago Language Modeling Laboratory This event was co-produced by The University of Chicago and Chicago Public Media (WBEZ-Chicago). It is part of WBEZ's 2011-2012 Off-Air Event Series and the International House Global Voices Program. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/UCHICAGOytSubscribe About #UChicago: A destination for inquiry, research, and education, the University of Chicago empowers scholars to challenge conventional thinking. Formatting Footnotes | Chicago Manual of Style | The Nature of Writing

04:14
To format your footnotes properly, following the guidelines set out in the Chicago Manual of Style, make sure you do the following things: • Use Times New Roman font, size 10. • Indent the first line of each footnote one tab space. • Single space your footnotes, but add a space between each one. • Add a period behind the numbers that start the footnotes. • Change the format of the numbering in the footnotes so that the numbers are not in superscript. Watch the video for a quick tutorial to see how to apply these changes. The Chicago Manual of Style

07:24
The Chicago Manual of Style (abbreviated in writing as CMS or CMOS [the version used on its website], or, by some speakers as Chicago) is a style guide for American English published since 1906 by the University of Chicago Press. Its sixteen editions have prescribed writing and citation styles widely used in publishing. It is "one of the most widely used and respected style guides in the United States". CMOS deals with aspects of editorial practice, from American English grammar and use to document preparation. This video is targeted to blind users. Created for Ashley Henley's Writing for Digital Media class as part of the Master of Professional Writing program at Chatham University. Project was to take something that is typically presented using traditional media (a book, in this case) and reconstruct it as a Web video. I chose to take the section on semicolons from the Chicago Manual of Style and create a video illustrating their use.
