Create your style using the new formatting options in SQL Prompt
In this Super SQL Tip Software Engineer Andrei Rusitoru explains the fantastic new formatting options available in SQL Prompt 8 from Redgate. SQL Prompt is a code completion, code formatting, and refactoring tool for SQL Server. It’ll plug into SQL Server Management Studio or Visual Studio. You’ll find you can work more quickly and accurately with SQL queries, as well as standardize across your team by sharing formatting styles and commonly used SQL snippets. Try it free for 28 days at www.red-gate.com/sqlprompt For more tips for writing SQL effortlessly check out the #SuperSQLTips playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhFdCK734P8A_q6XHDXi4CQzys3R0Jw3X Transcript: Hello, I’m Andrei Rusitoru and I work for Redgate software. Today I’m going to show you how to create your own style using the brand new formatting options in SQL Prompt 8. In SQL Prompt 8 we’ve added our completely re-designed formatting engine, giving you the best possible control over your formatting styles. Today we are going to go through the new SQL Prompt formatting options in SQL Server Management Studio, but exactly the same functionality is also available in Visual Studio. In SSMS I’m going to open the SQL Prompt menu at the top here and choose Edit Formatting Styles from the drop-down. This opens the Formatting styles window where you can see we have already included a couple of example styles to get you started. Keep an eye out for more of these in upcoming releases. Under “Your Styles” I’m going to click on Create a style to get started. It’s much easier to build your style on an existing one rather than starting completely from scratch. If you have created styles in previous versions of SQL Prompt then you will find them added here, and you can continue to work on them. I’m going to use Redgate’s Default Style as a base to build my new style on. So here are all the options. As you can see we’ve added a lot of functionality to allow you to tweak your style settings. Each of the main areas of SQL code has a section down the left hand side here, with sub-sections to help you easily find and manage these settings. To start with, let’s take a look at the GLOBAL settings and set the Whitespace options. For my tab behaviour, I want to use only tabs and I want 2 spaces in a tab. As you can see, there is some sample code at the bottom here that updates live as you change your settings so you can see exactly what impact your changes are having. If you want, you can change this to your own code if you have a query open. I don’t want to wrap my lines so I’m going to uncheck that. And finally I want to add a space before my commas. Let’s check how it looks… that looks good so I’m going to press Save. My new style has now been added to the menu on the left, and I can see a preview of what it does right here. This is going to be really helpful when I’ve created a few of these. I can also set the new style as my default active formatting by clicking Set As Active. I’m now going to go back in and change some other settings, so I click edit at the bottom here. I like to have my JOIN clauses right aligned to FROM, so I’m going to change that. I also like to have an extra line between them so I can see them easily. And I want my AND/OR operators to be aligned to the first list item, so I am going to go down here to the EXPRESSIONS section and change that under Operators. As you can see, there are lots of options to help you get your SQL looking exactly the way you want it and you can keep tweaking it until it looks perfect. You can create as many styles as you want too, so if you want a few different versions you can create them and then easily switch between them by simply right-clicking in your code, we are going to cover this in another video soon. So there you have it, it really is that easy to create your own style using the new formatting options in SQL Prompt 8.

Code completion, formatting, and refactoring with SQL Prompt
SQL Prompt is a code completion, code formatting, and refactoring tool for SQL Server. It’ll plug into SQL Server Management Studio or Visual Studio. You’ll find you can work more quickly and accurately with SQL queries, as well as standardize across your team by sharing formatting styles and commonly used SQL snippets. Try it free for 28 days at www.red-gate.com/sqlprompt Transcript: Introduction: SQL Prompt is a code completion, code formatting, and refactoring tool for SQL Server. It’ll plug into SQL Server Management Studio or Visual Studio. You can rely on SQL Prompt for speed and accuracy, and save yourself time writing and exploring SQL, so you can focus on the important stuff. We’ve found it can speed up SQL coding by 52%. SQL Prompt has a host of features you’ll find useful everyday – from customizable snippets for the code you use most, which you can share with your team, to tab coloring, so you don’t execute code in the wrong environment. You can work super-fast with data from the Results grid – exporting them straight to Excel, or even scripting them out as an INSERT statement. Let’s jump into SQL Prompt and see these features in action. Code completion: By simply typing J, SQL Prompt autocompletes JOIN, gives you table suggestions, and JOIN conditions, so you don’t have to memorize column names or aliases. We’ve got a SELECT * here: SQL Prompt expands the wildcard so you can keep just the columns you need. Or, use the Column Picker, and hit Tab. These tooltips give you hints about keyboard shortcuts too. We’re using an alias here. SQL Prompt lets you easily rename an alias or variable – it’ll rename every alias in the script, which is great if you’re doing a bit of refactoring. Just right click, or hit F2. Hit Shift+F5 and SQL Prompt will execute just the statement under your cursor. And that tip about working with data in the Results grid? Just right click here, and choose to Export to Excel, copy as an IN clause, or script as an INSERT statement. Code formatting: Here’s how to format your code to your preferred style. Say you’ve got an organizational standard, but you want to code in your own style first. Go to Options, and under Format you’ll find a variety of settings including casing and commas. See the changes in the sample window, and save or export your settings to share with your colleagues. In the query window, just hit CTRL+K+Y to format your code. We’ve got new formatting options coming soon, too, so keep an eye out! Code snippets: Another handy feature in SQL Prompt is snippets, which save you time with repeat blocks of code. Type SSF then hit Tab and you’ll see SQL Prompt inserts SELECT * FROM. This is just one of many built-in snippets. You can easily customize these or create your own. Open the Snippet Manager and click New. Give your snippet a name, insert your code, and save. Now it’s ready for you to use. Or, you can access snippets from the Actions List, as well as comment out code, or surround it with a function like BEGIN/END. Code refactoring: If you’re refactoring code, SmartRename will help you out – it’ll catch every reference for you, so nothing breaks. This is built on Redgate SQL Compare, the industry’s most trusted comparison tool, so you’re in safe hands. From here, you can view actions, warnings, and dependencies. Other time savers: Here’s a little life saver for you – say you write a DELETE statement without a WHERE clause, SQL Prompt will ask you if you really want to execute it. Not only that, but you can specify colours for each environment, so it’s easy to see if you’re connected to development or production. Notice the green tab? That’s the color we’ve picked for development. This bright red one tells us we’re in production. You can set the colours at the database or server level. While we’re looking at tabs, check out Tab History. If SQL Server Management Studio crashes, SQL Prompt will reopen all your tabs the next time you launch SSMS. Or say you get distracted and close a tab without thinking, you can explore and reopen closed tabs. Summary: Alongside all this, we’re regularly adding new features and improvements based on the top suggestions from our users. To see how SQL Prompt can make you more productive and save you from some nasty errors, try it free at www.red-gate.com/sqlprompt

Better VBA 7 - Code formatting tools
Proper formatting of the VBA source code is a crucial factor for the readability of the code. While you are writing code, you should format it correctly right away because it will help you to write solid, error free code. But what about maintaining legacy applications with badly formatted code? Of course, fixing the formatting of the code has massive benefits through improved readability, but reformatting the code manually takes a lot of effort in a big application. In this video I show two tools that reduce the effort to reformat VBA source code to virtually zero. Smart Indenter is a free add-in with the single purpose of indenting VB/VBA source code. Further info and download: http://oaltd.co.uk/Indenter/ MZ-Tools, an add-in containing a whole suite of useful extensions to Visual Studio and the VBA development environment, has a feature to properly indent source code. Further info and free trial version: https://mztools.com/ And there is another code indenting tool I discovered only after recording the video. AET VBE Tools - its for Excel VBA only, though. http://dailydoseofexcel.com/archives/2017/02/11/aet-vbe-tools/ More info on the Better VBA video series: http://codekabinett.com/rdumps.php?Lang=2&targetDoc=better-vba-code Here is another video about important elements of good code formatting and the difference between good and poorly formatted code: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqoj1mQrbBs If you like this video, please share, like, and subscribe to this channel!

For example, say you’re copying a list of items from Excel, you can save yourself time manually adding quotes and commas, by selecting the block of text, hit CTRL to bring up the Actions List, and select ‘Add quotes & commas’. Or perhaps you have an application that uses the SQL via external files where the formatting won’t work. Save yourself from manually removing the formatting, and instead highlight the block of text, hit CTRL and select ‘Unformat’. It’ll remove any formatting, compacting the script as much as possible. Conditional Formatting with Mail Merge in Word
You can use Conditional Formatting with Mail Merge in Word to automatically change the colour of font based on criteria. Word does not have a Conditional Formatting feature, but you can write an IF function in a Mail Merge field and format the true and false responses. In the video, Conditional Formatting is applied to turn the font red if the value is greater than 20, and to format in black if it is not. This technique could be used on any Word field although this video tutorial demonstrates it with Mail Merge. Find more great free tutorials at; http://www.computergaga.com Connect with us! For more tips for writing SQL effortlessly check out the #SuperSQLTips playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhFdCK734P8A_q6XHDXi4CQzys3R0Jw3X Transcript: Hi I'm Steve Jones from SQL Server Central and I've got another SQL Prompt tip for you from Redgate Software. A lot of you that use SQL Prompt or maybe even some of you that don't know that often you’ll run queries like this where we want to see which columns in the table. We might not remember what they're called or how they're spelled. So we’ll use the select * to actually run our query. This is bad practice - hopefully all of you realize that. One of the nice things with SQL Prompt is that when I put my cursor at the end of the * I can actually press tab to expand the list and now I get all the columns that are available. If there are certain ones I don't want, I can just remove them and I've got a nice query that doesn't retrieve columns that are unnecessary. Hopefully this is a tip you'll find useful. I'm Steve Jones for SQL Server Central and Redgate Software.

SQL Prompt - rename aliases and variables
SQL Prompt is a code completion, code formatting, and refactoring tool for SQL Server. It’ll plug into SQL Server Management Studio or Visual Studio. You’ll find you can work more quickly and accurately with SQL queries, as well as standardize across your team by sharing formatting styles and commonly used SQL snippets. Try it free for 28 days at www.red-gate.com/sqlprompt In this tip Data Platform MVP Grant Fritchey explains how to use SQL Prompt to rename all uses of a variable in one quick step. For more tips for writing SQL effortlessly check out the #SuperSQLTips playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhFdCK734P8A_q6XHDXi4CQzys3R0Jw3X Transcript: Hello my name is Grant Fritchey and I work for Redgate Software. I'm just reviewing some code that was written by a junior DBA. I’m going through the stuff taking a look at what he's doing and it’s not too bad, although I gotta say you know plnhndl for a variable is irksome. I don't really care for it, it's not clear and I don't understand what that means. plnhndl is not exactly plan handle. Now SQL Prompt actually does a bunch of stuff for us - one of things that it can do is it’ll highlight all these places where this variable is used and it’s used several times and it's just irksome, I just don't like it. I want some clarity. I want some simple stuff. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to rename all of these but I’m going to rename them all at once. I'm going to right-click after I've highlighted that bit of code and I’m going to do ‘rename alias or variable’. I can now type in ‘plan handle’ which is much more clear and I'm happy because you'll notice every single instance of where that variable was used is now edited. So it's a great way to get stuff done, it's a great way to maintain your code, it makes things a lot easier, it makes getting your code done faster so you can maintain stuff, change things as necessary, update, clear things out, all of it through an automated fashion that you can visually see what's happening inside your server. And so now I’m going to save this and we are good to go. That's it, nice simple tip to get you going. My name is Grant Fritchey and I work for Redgate Software.
