http://www.FTV.com/videos MILAN - Backstage at Marni, top models like Ruby Aldridge are prepping in hair and makeup. Models wear a burnt orange liner on their lids and white liner underneath. "Summer, a young girl growing up," says Tom Pecheux, describing the makeup look for the models at the Marni Spring/Summer 2012 collection fashion show. It's a balance between the fresh face and the grown up liner, he says. "There's a flavor of 60s, but everything is twisted." A thick eyeliner on the top lid in a color that represents the grown up woman with a white liner on the inside that represents the innocence. Can you spot models like Arizona Muse, Julia Nobis, and Fei Fei Sun? "It's colorful and playful, but still sophisticated at the same time," Julia says, describing the collection. http://www.engvid.com/ Do you know what a 'phrasal verb' is? In this lesson, I will explain what a phrasal verb is, and teach you the most common phrasal verbs native speakers use to talk about clothing. I will teach you 'dress up', 'zip up', 'do up', 'wear in', 'kick off', 'have on', and many more! Phrasal verbs can be difficult for English learners to remember. Watch this lesson and then take the quiz, so that you'll remember them all! http://www.engvid.com/12-phrasal-verbs-clothes/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, there. My name is Emma, and in today's video, I am going to teach you some phrasal verbs about getting dressed and putting on clothes. Okay? So it's about clothes. What's a phrasal verb? A phrasal verb is when you have a verb and you have a preposition. So it's a verb plus preposition is a phrasal verb. Students usually hate phrasal verbs. There's so many of them in English and they're very difficult to remember. So, in this video, I'm going to teach you maybe 12 or 13 phrasal verbs that will really help you to improve your English. So let's get started. The first verb I want to teach you is: "dress up". Okay. "Dress up". What does it mean "to dress up"? When you dress up, maybe you have a hot, hot date. Maybe there's the boy or the girl of your dreams and you want to look good - you will dress up, meaning you will wear something that looks extra good. So, for example, right now, I'm wearing this sweater, not dressed up. If I wanted to dress up, oh, look here, maybe I would put on this nice dress. Okay? So dress up. Here's my sentence: "I have a date. I have a date. I should dress up tonight." Okay. "Zip up". So again: "dress up", "zip up". What does "zip up" mean? Well, I'll show you. Did you see that? "Zipping up" means you have a zipper and you pull it up. "Zip up! It's cold!" Mothers love to say this to their children: "Zip up your jacket so you won't be cold." Very similar to zip up, is: "button up". When you "button up" something, you don't zip up, you have buttons. So let me show you. So I will take off my sweater and I will put on a new jacket with buttons. Okay, so if I button up my jacket... Maybe... Where is the button? Okay, here we go. Just like this. Okay? So I buttoned up my jacket. Okay, good. "I should button up my jacket." The next expression I want to teach you: "do up". So all of these: "up", "up", "up", "up". If you "do something up", it means you either button it up or you zip up. "Do up" means the same thing as "zip up" and "button up". "I must do up my jacket." Means: I should button up my jacket, do up your jacket. Okay? It's all the same. "Have on". "What do you have on right now?" It means the same thing as: "wearing". What are you wearing? What do you have on? Pay special attention, the preposition is: "on". Okay? So tell me, what does Emma have on right now? Emma has a hat on. Well, it's not exactly a hat; it's a shower cap. I like to take baths, so this is for the shower. "Put on". "I put on my hat." Okay? When you put something on, it's just putting on. "I put on my hat." What's the opposite of: "put on"? Oh, I don't have it here. Well, you will see it in a moment. But I put on - "take off". I took off my hat. Next expression: "throw on". "I threw on my hat." Can you guess what this means? If I "throw it on", it means I do it quickly. Okay? "I threw on my hat and I ran out the door.", "I threw on my hat and I went to school.", "I threw on my jacket and I went to school." So it means you put on clothes very quickly. I'm going to take off my hat. I think it's a little too colourful. "Try on". What does it mean "to try something on"? If you ever go to a store and you see: "Oh, look at that dress. It's the most beautiful dress." I'm going to try it on, meaning I'm going to put it on at the store to see if I like it. So "try on" is for shopping. You usually go to a small room, a fitting room, and you see if you like the outfit by putting it on. So it's about stores. "At the store, I tried on a shirt.", "At the store, I tried on the shoes, I tried on the hat." So this is the expression: "try on". Again: "on", "on", "on", "on". And the first four were: "up", "up", "up", "up". It's very important that you use the correct prepositions. If I say: "Do down", or: "do in", or: "do off", these maybe don't make any sense or they have different meanings. So the preposition is what makes the meaning. So let me teach you some more expressions about getting dressed. Okay, so I already explained: "take off", but I wanted you to see how it's spelt. "Take off". I took off my hat, now I have no hat. "I took off my jacket." Means to take off your jacket. Okay, so it's the opposite of: "put on". I put on my hat and I took off my hat.

Trompe-l'oeil 3D dress is the star of the Byblos Autumn-Winter 2012-2012 collection Nothing is what it seems, but everything is possible. It's like being on another planet. Life on Mars: this is the inspiration for the Byblos Autumn-Winter 2012-2012 collection. It is another dimension where forms don't follow the rules and the lines of the models appear to be constructed directly on their bodies - as if to protect them - in an expression which breaks all the conventions to create something new. Special. Different. It is a reinterpretation of the classic iconic lines of fashion lines where the garments, like trompe-l'oeil, are visually deceptive and - breaking from the script - they dissolve into one another thanks to a clever play of tailoring and construction: it is only one but it seems like two. The jacket lapels disappear into the garment; the garment splits and - as if peeling away - becomes two, only to be reabsorbed back into a single item. The jersey duplicates; in a play on volume, it appears diminutive from the front and is then unexpectedly exaggerated at the back with its ovoid shapes. The knitwear stitches create 3D effects both with the wedges describing a very fine armour, as well as with the box stitch which creates a rigorous and graphic checkerboard pattern. Out of the geometric shapes - which are created by overlapping and shifting circles one on top of the other - embroidered and applied metallic thread and mirror sequins emerge; jacquard patterns appear in the knitwear and there is a new technique - thermal fusion fabric welding - which doesn't involve any sewing. It is a classic new line, where futurism expresses itself in a riot of shapes which sing of speed; where the dialogue between proportions is inverted and gives vitality to the fractured volumes: like the coat which becomes loose, flexible, fluid; or the way the pants reinterpret the proportions of the past, come to life, and lengthen the silhouette, stopping at the calf. Fun is in the foreground, with detailing at centre stage: hot fusions (no sewing involved) of elasticised fabric illuminate and dazzle with gold, bronze, white, or glossy black, giving a high-tech and chic feel. The leather is treated to make it refl ective and bulging, with the circle graphic achieved with rabbit fur inserts. Original prints are born from the magic of the circle which is represented, revisited, and reinterpreted in a three dimensional key. This adds vitality to the embroidery, the detailed graphics, and the decorations along the seams and edges; the sequins -- glossy, opaque - chase each other around the wedges, 3D and almost like hill-like. The play of colours opens up new possibilities: the combination of natural tones - beige, powder, and sand - is broken up by the classic black and white and then explodes into intense blocks of colour -- fuchsia, silver, red, and turquoise. The accessories also include blocks of colour, rigorously fractured: such as the fluorescent inserts of the lightweight belts, or the latex gloves - also in fluorescent or nude colours -- creating a surprisingly translucent effect and ending above the elbow; or with the fingerless glove look, providing protection from the UV rays of a whole new dimension.

Nicolas Ghesquière talked about his collection, quite simply, as an exploration of "matte and shine, playing with textures to see how they reflect or absorb light. And playing with our house codes." There's nothing remotely simple, however, about the complex, futuristic synthesis of line, cut, and glinting surfaces that played out on his runway. It involved silvered Lurex streaking over skin to cover legs, feet, and hands; asymmetric combinations of drape and structure; bonded jersey pantsuits with A-line tunic tops; tissue-fine metallic crinkle-pleated jackets; and, somewhere in the middle, pale suede pieces that looked as if they might have been extruded from some high-spec industrial machine. The show built to an amazing finale series of dresses cut in iridescent gold, silver, pewter, green, and pink ribbon. As one of the models stepped onto the runway in a sequined sheath, Ghesquière glanced over and remarked, "She looks like a solar panel, no?" The genius of Balenciaga is Ghesquière's projection of couture techniques into the world of new technology. A crude stab at describing it might be "sci-fi couture," but the truth is his mind-set renders stock fashion vocabulary redundant. Ghesquière works without references or narrative, pushing experimentation with fabric and cut to the nth degree. Cleverer still is the sense of a grounded core: the recognizable, desirable developments of pants (the evolution of his jodhpurs in mackintosh fabric; the sophisticated motocross shapes), and the precious, shiny, chic bags clutched in every hand.

Needle's Eye is a story describing fashion woes faced by women all over the world; expected to follow societal norms to conform to a certain body type, shape and structure, in order to be considered beautiful or fashionable. Fashion designers in design school are taught to draw the ‘perfect figure,’ that looks slim and tall. They design for models who rule the ramp walks, typically 6 footers, with as little body mass as possible. These models have to maintain their bodies to perfect measurements, as stated by agencies that hire them. Any other person DOES NOT FIT IN! Hoardings that advertise big designer or retail clothing brands or fashion accessories show only these stick thin models, generally with a fair complexion and long straight hair. Fashion cannot and must not be dictated by the natural body type that one is born with. Fashion essentially is the art of dressing aesthetically, taking into consideration one’s unique personality and more importantly body structure. Different lines and silhouettes suit different body types. In different parts of the world and within numerous cultures, there are different body types that are considered ‘fashionable.’ Through the ages the fashion rules have changed and been dictated by the ‘fashionable few.’ A few examples would be the hour glass 36-26-36, size zero, the supermodel figure, etc. Different cultures have different perceptions of perfect. Nobody is and can ever be perfect. Nobody can and ever will be exactly the same as the other. Each and every person has a unique physical appearance and mental capacity. Taking all of the above into account, how can fashion be portrayed only on a certain body type? This creates an immense amount of pressure on women to adhere to ‘fashion rules.’ Day in and out we hear women complain that they are not – thin enough, tall enough, round enough. Many women are known to go into depression, becoming victims of anorexia, following rigorous methods of dieting or unnatural procedures like plastic surgery and popping pills. Clothing and fashion is required by everybody, regardless of shape, size or colour. It is a commodity that we need and use in our everyday lives. Clothing is what is closest to our skin. Every single person should feel like they are fashionable and that clothing is designed for them. Fashion has always looked through the needle’s eye figuratively, claiming just a handful to belong to fashion. On the other hand, a needle is an instrument that is required to make all garments. It is something that cannot really be replaced in the clothing industry. Through this project titled “Needle’s Eye,” we wish to portray fashion that looks beyond shape. We hope to instill in people, worldwide, a positive attitude about body types and an acceptance of everybody, regardless. Fashion should belong to every person!

NEW YORK, February 5, 2007 -- When the red velvet curtain finally opened, Marc Jacobs' 56 models were arrayed tableau vivant-style in front of an enormous set of French doors—the kind you might see in a Paris salon. What you noticed first were the hats. Multicolored, with knit crowns, and short or wide brims, they made the gangly teenage girls onstage hold themselves like proper ladies. Yes, fashion's favorite change agent was at it again. Last season's billowy layers were nowhere in sight. The collection began with a long coat, ribbed sweater, and trousers with loose stirrups that gave them a clean, sharp line. Moving on, Jacobs showed printed satin and matte jersey shirtdresses to the mid-calf, and belted alpaca tunics over slim cropped pants and knee-length skirts. There were jumpsuits straight out of the seventies. "I wanted something narrower," said the designer, describing the show's new silhouette. Duchesse satin minidresses were cut trim and A-line with a fringe of pleats at the hem, or they came draped, wrapped, and sashed from the shoulders. This was American sportswear, but with a European sense of impeccability. Some might call it "grown-up." Jacobs, explaining that the collection is a reflection of what's going on with him personally, called it restraint. (Though the term can hardly be used to describe the show's stacks of plastic bangles and Bakelite-heavy handbags.) One look at the designer and you're reminded that he's been spending time at the gym—those were pecs beneath his crisp blue shirt. The experiments with volume that he's been focused on in the last several collections have now gone the way of his extra weight. It might take a season for designers who've followed his lead before to catch on. But less, when it looks this chic, really is more.
