Transcript: Hello and welcome. In this lesson, I will teach you the seven rules that you need to know for using articles in English correctly. Articles are the words ‘a’, ‘an’, and ‘the’. There is a final quiz at the end of the lesson for you to test your understanding. OK, the first rule is about where to use ‘a’ and where to use ‘an’. So rule number one is use ‘a’ before a consonant sound, and ‘an’ before a vowel sound. So in all of these words – you see that they start with a consonant sound. Cat starts with /k/, dog starts with /d/, boy with /b/, girl with /g/, house with /h/ and tree with /t/. So we say ‘a cat’, ‘a dog’, ‘a boy’, ‘a girl’, ‘a house’, ‘a tree’ etc. Notice that in natural speech, we don’t say ‘a’, we say ‘uh’ – like ‘a cat’. In this next set of words, you see that, they all start with a vowel sound – apple starts with /ae/, engineer starts with /e/, ice-cream with /ai/, old with /o/, umbrella with /uh/. So we say ‘an apple’, ‘an engineer’, ‘an ice-cream cone’, ‘an old womman’, ‘an umbrella’ and so on. In speech, we don’t say ‘an’, we say /ən/. Let’s do a small exercise. You see ten items on the screen. For each one, I want you to say if you would use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before it. Stop the video, think about it, then play the video again and check. OK here are the answers. Did you get them all right? I want to focus on items number seven to ten because these are a little tricky. Number seven is ‘a university’ because even though ‘university’ starts with the letter ‘u’ the first sound of the word is not a vowel sound. We don’t say /ooniversity/. We say /yoo-nə- vər-si-ty/ so that first sound is a /y/ sound, which a consonant sound, so we say ‘a university.’ Number eight is similar. The word ‘European’ starts with a /y/ sound, so ‘a European tour.’ In number nine, the spelling has an ‘h’ at the start but that ‘h’ is silent. We don’t say /hau-ər/, we say /au-ər/. The first sound is an /au/ sound which is a vowel sound, so this is ‘an hour’. In the same way, in number ten, we say MA. ‘M’ starts with an /e/ sound which is again a vowel sound, so ‘an MA in English’. OK let’s move on to rule number two: Use ‘a’ and ‘an’ ONLY with singular, countable nouns. We say that a noun is countable if we can count it – one, two, three, four etc. All of these words on the screen are countable. We can say one elephant, three cars, ten teachers, five hundred onions and so on. Now if you talk about one person or thing, like one elephant or one car, then that’s called a singular noun and if you say ten teachers or five hundred onions, those are called plural nouns. Uncountable nouns cannot be counted in this way. Nouns like water, sugar, milk, love, anger, knowledge are some examples. If you think about it, you cannot say “I drank four waters” or “I want eight milks”. To a person, you can say “I love you” but you can’t say “I have five loves for you” – that doesn’t make any sense. So these are all uncountable. Alright, so the rule is - you can only use ‘a’ and ‘an’ if you’re talking about one person or one thing. Let’s do another quick exercise. Here are ten items again. This time, you see ‘a’ or ‘an’ before the nouns, but some of these are wrong. They should NOT have ‘a’ or ‘an’ before them. Stop the video, identify the mistakes, then play the video again and check. OK, here are the answers. Number three is wrong because ‘shirts’ is a plural and you cannot use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before a plural noun. Number five is wrong because ‘happiness’ is uncountable, so again, ‘a’ or ‘an’ cannot be used there. The same goes for number six – water is uncountable. Number nine is wrong because ‘doctors’ is a plural – you can say ‘a doctor’ but not ‘a doctors’. And finally, in number ten, advice is an uncountable noun – so you cannot ask for ‘an advice’. Now a quick note here: the article ‘the’ can be used with all kinds of nouns – singular or plural countable nouns, and uncountable nouns. OK, so let’s now talk about how to choose between ‘a’ or ‘an’ and ‘the’. Here’s rule number three: Use ‘a’ or ‘an’ to talk about a person or thing unknown to your listener. And use ‘the’ to talk about a person or thing known to your listener. For example, “My sister has two computers: a PC and a laptop. The PC is quite old but the laptop is brand new.” I say ‘a PC’ and ‘a laptop’ because that’s the first time I’m mentioning the two computers. That is, until this point, they are unknown to you, the listener.

It can be so frustrating when people advise you, “Just follow your passion!” Yeah, sure, you’d love to—if only you knew what your passion was. You’re probably the kind of person who works hard, with commitment and persistence. When you know what you’re doing, nothing will stop you. But before you can become unstoppable, you need to know what you’re starting. Before you can follow your passion, you have to find it. If you’re feeling stuck, here are five fresh ways to discover what you really want to do with your life. Take time to work through the process and know that, no matter what, you’ll be getting closer to where you want to be. 1. Start With the Right Perspective If you went into a restaurant with the strong opinion—“I’m not hungry. There’ll be nothing here I want to eat. I don’t want to be here”—the menu isn’t going to look appealing. You won’t explore it with due time or attention, and it’s unlikely you’ll find food you’ll enjoy eating. The same principle applies to passion-seeking. If you’re convinced that finding your passion is hard, or that it’s not going to happen for you, you’ll remain closed to possibilities. You’ll block the little nudges, pulls, and signals that guide us all. After all, how can you expect to find fulfilling work if you don’t believe it exists? Choose to adopt the perspective that you can do what you love with your life. One of the best ways to strengthen this point of view is to surround yourself with people who are living examples. How many of your friends and family are following their passions? If it’s not many, it might be time to expand your circle; associate with—and be inspired by—men and women who are inspired by their work. 2. Get Out Your Metal Detector Once you’ve decided that your passion is findable, it’s time to look for evidence of what you already love to do. If you scan the landscape of your life, you’ll notice certain experiences peak up. It’s so valuable to delve into these “peak moments” and extract the key ingredients. Consider yourself a beach-trawler, discerning between the gold and the cheap metal. For example, one of my favorite summer jobs involved teaching English to teenagers. I might assume the key ingredient was the English language, or young people. But when I paid attention to my metaphorical metal detector, it become clear that the bleep went off when I was being a leader within a community, and teaching that community something of great value to them. That’s exactly what I do now in my work—but without the teenagers, present perfect tense, or vocabulary tests! Make a list of the ingredients that truly mattered in your peak moments; don’t be distracted by the counterfeits. 3. Look for the Umbrella When you look at all the ingredients that matter to you, they might at first seem entirely disconnected. Let’s say you love French, drinking coffee, playing with words, analyzing and categorizing, and being a leader within a community. How could you construct a career from these? It'd be like peering into your cupboard and seeing cocoa powder, tofu, and carrots and wondering: How could I possibly make something delicious that includes all of these? This is the time to look beyond the ingredients and seek an umbrella; something that all of these ingredients can fit beneath. For example, my colleague Abby—whose diverse passions are described above—helps business owners to find the right words to fit their brand. She analyzes and categorizes copy into what she calls “voice values.” She draws wisdom from previously running a funky French lifestyle boutique, and French words pepper her own copy, giving her brand that special je ne sais quoi. She’s become known as a leader for those who want to communicate effectively with their potential clients. Oh—and she’s built a recognizable Pinterest profile showcasing her favorite coffee houses. All of these passions fit under the overarching umbrella of her business; they’ve all found a home there, and the variety actually helps her to stand out and attract her perfect clients. 2019 Volkswagen Passat Variant R-Line - Drive and Design. Subscribe. Volkswagen will offer the business class best-seller with a new specification structure. The basic equipment has the designation Passat. Above this, the medium level profile is called Business. From now on, the top level is called Elegance. Business and Elegance can also be ordered with R-Line personalisation. As well as these versions, the new model will also again be available as a separate Alltrack model (all-wheel drive all-rounder with offroad capabilities) and also as a GTE. For the market launch, there will also be an exclusive special-edition model limited to 2,000 units: the all-wheel drive Passat R-Line Edition in the exclusive colour Moonstone Grey. On board here as standard: one of the two top engines (176 kW TDI or 200 kW TSI) and new assistance systems such as Travel Assist. Particulate filters as standard. An additional highlight is the newly developed 2.0 TDI Evo – a highly efficient turbo diesel engine with an output of 110 kW / 150 PS that produces 10 g/km less CO2 compared with the equivalent engine in the predecessor. The 2.0 TDI Evo is the forerunner of a new generation of diesel engines. The powerplant range also includes three petrol engines (TSI) with 110 kW / 150 PS, 140 kW / 190 PS, and 200 kW / 272 PS as well as three diesel engines (TDI); the latter deliver 88 kW / 120 PS, 140 kW / 190 PS, and 176 kW / 240 PS respectively. All TSI and TDI units fulfil the requirements of the Euro 6d-TEMP emission standard. In addition, every new Passat – whether a petrol or diesel engine – is equipped with a particulate filter. Travel Assist. IQ.DRIVE is the new umbrella brand for Volkswagen assistance systems. From now on, the technologies involved in autonomous driving will be bundled under the IQ.DRIVE label. An example is the new Travel Assist. The Passat will be the first Volkswagen that is capable of partially automated driving across practically the whole speed range (0 to 210 km/h). Along with its assistance system, the Passat represents the most advanced version of IQ.DRIVE yet seen. Capacitive steering wheel. Volkswagen builds on intuitive operation and technologies that function largely automatically. The new Passat will be the first Volkswagen worldwide with a capacitive steering wheel. It detects touch by the driver, providing an interactive interface to systems such as Travel Assist. Automatically safer. Emergency Steering Assist also sees its début in the Passat. The system improves safety during sudden evasive manoeuvres via braking intervention. In addition, the lane guidance with Lane Assist has been optimised with a new multifunction camera. The new IQ.LIGHT - LED matrix headlights also enhance safety and comfort. Permanently online. The third generation of the Modular Infotainment Matrix (MIB3) also has its début alongside the new Passat. App-Connect – the interface for integrating smartphone apps – offers wireless integration of iPhone apps via a wireless Apple CarPlay™ for the first time as a result. The Passat is now permanently online as the new Infotainment system also comes with an integrated online connectivity unit (OCU) complete with SIM card as standard. As well as improved navigation-related services with real-time information, this encompasses new technologies and offers, music streaming services, Internet radio, the use of updatable web app technology, natural voice control enriched with online content, the seamless use of online services provided by Volkswagen We, and future cloud-based portable vehicle settings. Smartphones (compatible Samsung models) also become a mobile key for opening and starting the Passat. New Digital Cockpit. The hardware and software in the MIB3 form a digitally linked unit with the Passat’s new Digital Cockpit. The digital instruments have been considerably enhanced compared to the previous system (Active Info Display). The enhanced high-contrast graphics display is clear and high-quality. The variety of functions has been lifted to a whole new level. Three various display configurations can now be customised via the new multifunction steering wheel at the touch of a button. LEDs refine the design. Volkswagen has fine-tuned the Passat’s design for an even more commanding presence on the road in either saloon or estate form. The front and rear bumpers, the radiator grille and the Passat logo, now located centrally at the rear, have all been redesigned. In addition, new LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED fog lights, and LED tail light clusters ensure a distinctive design. Colours like Lapiz Blue, Bottlegreen, and Sandgold are new to the Passat. In addition, four new styles of 17, 18, and 19-inch alloy wheels extend the wheel range.

Travel Assist is activated via the multifunction steering wheel in a matter of seconds with a single button on the left-hand steering wheel clip. If Travel Assist is active, it enables partially automated driving on Level 2 of the spectrum of the official degrees of automation between 0 and 5. The driver must permanently monitor the system in Level 2 for legal and safety reasons. To ensure this, Travel Assist monitors whether the driver has hands on the steering wheel. This is more convenient in the new Passat than ever before as a direct result of the first capacitive steering wheel from Volkswagen. It is now sufficient that the driver merely touches the steering wheel; the capacitive surface recognises that the driver is still controlling the vehicle by means of 'hands-off detection'. In the past, feedback was required from the driver in the form of a slight movement of the steering wheel. Furthermore, the following applies: if the driver lets go of the steering wheel for more than around 10 seconds, then a series of warning signals (visual, acoustic, braking jolt) are issued. Transcript: ‘Will’ and ‘would’. These two verbs cause a lot of confusion for English learners. So, in this video, I’m going to clear up that confusion for you. I will teach you the difference between these two modal verbs, and I’ll show you how to use them correctly without making mistakes. As always, there is a quiz at the end to test your understanding. Alright, there are three main differences between ‘will’ and ‘would’. Let’s start with the most basic use of the two verbs. We use the verb ‘will’ to talk about the future. One very common use is to make a prediction, or say what we expect to happen in the future. Take this sentence: We will be in Hong Kong by 8 pm tomorrow. That means, we are traveling to Hong Kong and I expect that if our flight is on time, we will be there by 8 o’ clock tomorrow night. This next sentence also talks about the future but it’s a little different. I’m not hungry, so I will just have an orange juice. Imagine that you’re sitting in a restaurant with a friend and you say this. Here, you’re not talking about the distant future, you’re talking about the immediate future. In other words, here ‘will’ is used to express a decision that you have made. We also use ‘will’ to make a promise to someone: I’ll send you all the details by email. So, I’m promising to do something for you. OK, so that’s ‘will’. What about ‘would’? Well, ‘would’ is simply the past tense form of ‘will’. So imagine that we didn’t reach Hong Kong by 8 pm. Our flight was late. We only reached there at 2 in the morning. So then, we might look back at the past and say: We thought we would be in Hong Kong by 8 pm. But that didn’t happen. We often use ‘would’ when we report a past conversation – that is, we say what someone said in the past. For example: I wasn’t hungry, so I said that I would just have an orange juice. It’s the same sentence that we saw with ‘will’, but changed to the past tense. And the last sentence becomes: She said she would send me all the details by email. OK, now you know the basic use of ‘will’ and ‘would’. So let’s look at a more challenging use of these two verbs. This is the area of most confusion for people, and it is conditionals. That means sentences where you have a condition and a result. For example: If it rains tomorrow, I’ll bring my umbrella. That’s pretty easy. You see that I’m talking about something I will do in the future (“I’ll bring my umbrella”), but only on one condition – “if it rains.” Here’s another one: If Jared stops playing video games, his grades will improve. What do you understand by that? Well, it means that Jared probably spends a lot of time playing video games, so his grades are not very good. But if he stops playing video games, then he can spend more time studying, and we expect that his grades will improve. In both of these sentences, we’ve used ‘will’. And that is because both of these are real situations (these are both possible). This type of sentence is called the first conditional. But sometimes, we want to talk about imaginary or unreal situations. For example: If I had wings, I would fly all over the world. Obviously, this is not possible. I can’t grow wings, so all I’m doing is I’m using my imagination. Notice that we have used the past tense throughout this sentence – ‘If I had wings,’ – ‘I would fly’. We’re not talking about the past, but this past tense, including ‘would’, just shows that this is not real – it’s imaginary. Now, let’s go back to Jared and his video game addiction. What if I said: If Jared stopped playing video games, his grades would improve. It’s similar to the sentence with ‘will’, but using the past tense (with ‘would’) just shows that I don’t think this is possible. Jared is not going to stop, he’s just going to keep playing video games, and his grades are never going to improve. Remember, with ‘will’ it’s possible, with ‘would’ it’s not possible, it’s imaginary. And this type of sentence is called the second conditional. But there’s one more – the third conditional. This is used to talk about past conditions. Imagine that Jared had his exam, and as we expected, his grades were poor. So then we can say: If Jared had stopped playing video games, his grades would have improved. So here, we’re talking about a condition in the past. Notice that we say ‘had stopped’ (this is the past perfect tense) in the condition, and we use ‘would have’ in the result.

Explore the definition of user experience. Touch on the history of user-experience, how user experience relates to marketing and brand, and how different people define user experience. More at neuronUX.com Full transcript: Hi. I’m Soudy Khan, Director of User Experience at Neuron. Today I’m going to define the term: user experience. In short, and I think this is one of the best answers: User experience is the interaction a user has with a product or service. I think that’s probably the best definition that’s out there. It’s very short and concise. Again, that’s: the interaction a user has with a product or service. Now, I take that a little further. I just--If you’re going to go into it a little deeper, I like to say that: user experience is more than a font, an icon, a color, of even a specific set of screens or pages or application design. Really, user experience from a strategic point of view is a culmination of all the touch points a user has with a branded product or service. Each of these micro experiences creates an overall tone or feel and when executed to perfection or near perfection, that tone and feel, and therefore the emotional response to brand is coherent, is cohesive, and it reinforces the brand. It’s a reflection of the brand, at one with the brand. That’s the way I see user experience. Again, especially because user experience is so joined at the hip with marketing. A lot of the things that we think about as User Experience Designers and Directors are things like personas, user journeys, and really that’s all marketing. That’s been around in marketing for years before user experience has been around. Second thing I’m going to say is that user experience is an umbrella term. It’s kind of like saying, “I’m a medical doctor.” Well, yeah. It’s just like I’m a UXer or a user experience practitioner, but just like being a medical doctor, once you graduate from medical school, you tend to specialize. So, you might be an internal medicine doctor or a podiatrist or OBGYN or neurosurgeon. You could be any one of these specializations. So, remember, it’s an umbrella term. Next, it's nascent and it's high growth. It’s nascent in that we’ve had user experiences going back thousands of years in architecture and had it going back to film and theatre 2,500 years ago, theatre with the Greek(s) 2,500 years ago which sort of led into modern film production, but our understanding or the way we use user experience today mostly with technology products, consumer products, it’s relatively nascent. You know, it wasn’t that long ago that the late Bill Moggridge, one of the Founders of IDEO coined the term: user interface. When you have something that’s nascent, you still have a lot of information that’s in flux and because it’s a high growth market you have a lot of thought leaders or people positioning themselves to be thought leaders. Like me, guilty as charged. And, you hear a lot of sort of new terminology. I’ll do my best to stick to conventional terminology. I recently heard a consulting group, one of the largest consultancies in the world in fact, talk about user experience as: moments in time. And they gave you this whole presentation about moments in time and having moments in time and I kept thinking to myself, isn’t that just multi-tasking? That’s really what they were describing. So, we have a moment to do this and a moment to do that. We have all these different moments in time. Well, that’s just kind of the busy, modern life, right? You’re getting into the car. You’re checking your email. You’re doing all these different things at once. So, you’re multi-tasking. Again, I think it’s best for practitioners of user experience to stick to the most conventional terms. Another thing, talking a little bit more about these great brands and the companies that execute user experience across all these channels, all these touch-points, they do it with a consistency, and a cohesiveness that rings to a particular tone. What I mean by that is take--I know it’s a cliché example--but if you take Apple, and you were to remove the Apple logos, the brand, it still has a consistent feel and it has that feel that exudes Apple. Bang & Olufsen is another brand that has a Bang & Olufsen feel. Even though times have changed, technology has changed, industrial design overall has changed, it has remained relatively consistent or anchored in its core brand and its user experience since the 70’s. So, brands like Rolex, Mini Cooper, Apple, Bang & Olufsen, they really do a good job of creating a user experience that’s, again, consistent and cohesive and coherent through all these touch points. In short, in summary, user experience is an umbrella term. It’s nascent. It’s high growth, and it’s the interaction that the user has with the product or service. Thanks a lot for watching.
