How designers turn inspiration into fashion collections
How designers turn inspiration into fashion collections: In my previous videos, we talked about how to create a fashion collection. We will do more exercises now to better understand the steps of any collection. Apart from the text part of any documentation - the phase when you read a lot about the topic you are interested in- there is the visual documentation. In this case, I took another image from a book of mine and use it as a starting point for some sketches. How to actually get inspired by an image? Try to decompose the image into elements. See what are the definitory elements that compose the image. In this case, you could use elements like: the pattern with stripes, the color, the sleeves and the lower part of the costume, the structures you see in the area of eyes and those elements near the ears. Use them separately, combine them, use them as modules: big or small, rotate them and so on.I used the shapes near the ears and I placed them in the center of my costume. I imagined those shapes will have holes inside, so that you can see the skin or the layers of my costume. You can use the elements and place them in other parts of your costume. For example, some sleeves could become scarfs or you could undo them and sew them again in stripes to create a rhythm to your future garment. If you used a lot of volume for the upper part of your costume, try to simplify the rest, there is no need to over-work the whole costume. As about the drawing style, use details and a black marker to add the contrast here and there, where you feel the need. For the second drawing, turn the page upside down and get inspired. Even if the elements are the same, they position will inspire you to see even more in the photo, to discover inspiration there where you did not know it exist. See how used the "let's say glasses" from my source of inspiration and used them as earrings.Mix the elements and play with them in unusual combinations. When sketching, there is no need to think of the human body. You can draw it only when it helps, if not, the costume will be enough. Use simple lines and add color because this will help you visualize the outfit. Also, write down your ideas regarding the colors or textures to be used in the final work. And now sit back and see how I used another image to finish my small collection inspired by African art.As I previously mentioned, try to really sketch after the photos I used and send me your collection by email. My email is: [email protected] Waiting for your sketches and I will come back with a feed-back.Thank you and please don't forget to subscribe if you liked my video.

Example Art Portfolio for Entry into Fashion Design Degree
DISCLAIMER: hey guys, i took the year out to study art before applying for fashion design degree at university. I am no fine artist, some of my work is fine art based ,however it is not my passion which is why i continually found ways to refer back to fashion design to show the interviewers that i clearly wanted fashion design, but with a decent understanding of art in general to further me in design concept. it was difficult for me to show the work chronilogically as i worked in my sketchbook then on paper back and forth, so if my direction/ theme isnt as clear to you, i apologise! hope you like it anyway! If you're interested in studying fashion design in college, you'll have to include a portfolio in your application. Portfolios are used so the college can see the talent you have, so this is your chance to design whatever you want. Make sure it's something you're proud of and represents who you are. I made my portfolio this summer at a 2 week college program. I learned all about the portfolio process and had to present the portfolio at the end. I got an 89% overall in the class (averaging in tests and assignments) and a 90% on the portfolio itself plus the presentation. I see that this only took me two weeks which is a very short time to make a portfolio, so I'm going to make a few changes before I submit it. Thanks for watching! Native/American Fashion 15 | Virgil Ortiz
Native/American Fashion: Inspiration, Appropriation, and Cultural Identity explores fashion as a creative endeavor and an expression of cultural identity, the history of Native fashion, issues of problematic cultural appropriation in the field, and examples of creative collaborations and best practices between Native designers and fashion brands. In this segment, we hear from the second panelist to speak on the topic Creative Collaborations, artist and designer Virgil Ortiz. Virgil Ortiz (Cochiti Pueblo), contemporary Native American artist and fashion designer, grew up in New Mexico in a family of Cochiti Pueblo potters in which telling stories, collecting clay, gathering wild plants, and producing figurative pottery all were part of everyday life. After a highly successful collaboration with fashion icon Donna Karan, during which he developed boldly patterned textiles based on his graphic decorative painting, Ortiz has since launched his own fashion line. His designs, such as sharp laser-cut leather jackets, swinging taffeta skirts, cashmere sweaters, and silk scarves, echo the voluminous contours and sinuous motifs of Pueblo pottery while showcasing the richness of indigenous high fashion and compelling storytelling of Pueblo culture and history. This event was webcast and recorded in the Diker Pavilion of the National Museum of the American Indian George Gustav Heye Center in New York City on April 22, 2017.

How To Create A Fashion Portfolio | What To Include In That? (NIFT) | Arpitha Rai
How To Create A Fashion Portfolio is today's video topic. What to include in a fashion portfolio? Why do you need a portfolio? I will explain that in today's video. In today'™s video, I have shown you what all need to be included in a fashion student's portfolio. This video is requested by Akanksha. I have tried my best to put all the information into this video. Designing is different for each person. Every fashion school teaches differently. As I always say, there is no right or wrong in design. This video will help you work on your portfolio which will represent YOU as a fashion designer and a creative person. A portfolio is a compilation of your creative work. You must include your best work. don’t include anything which you are not happy with. You must show the process of your work. Have a story to tell about each collection. If you have nothing to talk about a collection, don’t include it. Based on your portfolio, universities are going to select you for the higher studies or a company will give you a job or a designer will select you as an assistant. You should not have too many or too fewer collections. Have at least 5-6 collections in a portfolio. There are 2 ways to select the collections. One: choose a category which is your strength and create your whole series of collections only on that. This will help you channelise your career based on your interest. If you are not sure about what your strength is, there is way Two: Allocate one collection for one category. You would have had modules for different categories, start creating collections based on each module. This is what I have done in college. This helped me in my first job as I worked on all men, women and kids collections for different brands there. You will have different portfolios for different categories eventually. 1. Men'™s wear 2. Women'™s wear 3. Kid's wear 4. Textile based collection 5. Brand based collection 6. Industry internship collection. This came up to 6 collections already. Tips: -- Keep the whole portfolio as one theme. Like a book or magazine. -- Have a cover page which says everything about you in one picture or sentence, content page, closing page. --” You need to be able to change the pages from your portfolio. you might want to remove an old collection or add a new one in the future --” Keep your best collection as the 1st one in the portfolio. Whoever sees it should be impressed and keep your 2nd best at the end of the portfolio. This will keep your best work in the viewer’s mind. --” A portfolio should be understood by a person even in your absence. Write down descriptions of all your designs. --” Have all the swatches in same size and similar format for all the collections Those are my suggestions for creating a portfolio. Go ahead and rewind, pause, replay wherever you need. give a thumbs up to the video to keep it in your youtube library and revisit whenever you are in doubt. If you have any questions, leave a comment below. I will answer them all. If you have a video request, let me know, I will create one for you. Don't forget to subscribe. Fashion collection concept ideas
Fashion collection concept ideas: With the next 2 videos I will continue with the plant series. The inspiration can come from anywhere but some of you wrote me asking for a fashion collection inspired by plants, so, here we are:) You were asking me how long I spend after doing my research. In fact, these drawings I made were not something I worked and over-worked. I just see the inspirational image, i decompose it instantly into parts and start drawing. That's why you see a lot of lines at the beginning of my videos. I try to capture the essence of the plant or flower I see in the moment I see it.I don't make any other sketches before shooting my videos. I do my research previously and I gather all the images in a folder. Then I start observing each of them, thinking if one plant or another will inspire me more. The nicest one will be the winner and I will just start sketching after it. My first sketches, you will see, are very close the the real model or shape of the flower. Then, the dresses will be more and more abstract until one can not guess from one glimpse the source of inspiration. This happens when you want to refine something and go deep and deeper into the creative process. When drawing I don't think of a color. I just start flowing and sinking into the theme I choose. After that, I put color to see what happens. Sometimes I don't like the color combination but i will keep the design of the outfit and re-color it.I don't think if the outfit can be worn or not. I will see that later. There is plenty of time to transform your outfit into a wearable one. Now it is the time to play. Also, when sketching, do not think of a certain part of your costume. Do not think or try to create a blouse or a dress. Let your pencil dance on the surface of the paper and the shape will come. It is always better to do this than imposing yourself to think of how can you transform a plant into a pullover or a skirt. And, as I previously said, try to use the same images I did to create a small collection. The Lifecycle of Clothes | FASHION AS DESIGN
How do garments begin, how do they end, and how does the cycle of production, consumption, and disposal impact the world around us? This week, we take a closer look at the lifecycle of garments, an often overlooked aspect of fashion that many individuals and companies are addressing with growing urgency. FASHION AS DESIGN is a new course by MoMA that explores a selection of garments from around the world—ranging from Kente cloth to jeans to 3D-printed dresses. Each week will begin with a conversation between the course instructors—Paola Antonelli, Michelle Fisher, and Stephanie Kramer—that introduces the themes, items, and questions that we will explore. Fashion collection inspired by architecture, sculpture and painting
Fashion collection inspired by architecture, sculpture and painting Hi again! Thank you for leaving me comments on my videos. I am so happy when I receive messages and likes from you guys because this means I am on the right path and I should continue filming my videos. I am so happy that you find them useful and that I see so much interactivity in my channel:) I am almost done with all your comment requests and here we are today, making a special collection for all of you who asked to see an architecture, sculpture and painting inspired collection.I decided to play a little game with you, if you are willing to try it. At the end of each of my videos I will present you up to 10 inspirational pictures on the same topic. For example, this time I will post some architecture, sculptures and modern paintings for you to get inspired. What you will have to do is to make 3 to 5 sketches and send them to me on my email: [email protected] and I will give you a personal feed-back to each of you and then present it on my next video. So, the challenge starts today, and you will have to create 3-5 garments inspired by the pictures at the end of this video. All this, until next Thursday. Waiting for your emails:) And now, let's enjoy the video:) As always, I started by sketching in pencil my fashion sketches. First I searched on Pinterest and Google and I was inspired by some modern buildings and interior decorations. I always search for interesting forms because otherwise, if the form is too simple, the costume will look poor and not attractive, nor interesting. It is nice to create minimalist outfits but for that, I will do another video when finishing these series. So, as I said, try to decompose what you see in small pieces. Is it the structure that inspires you? Or a glass surface of a building? The fact that if you turn upside down the image you will see other things that could inspire? Try them all and play with the source of inspiration. Also, there is no need to explore all these parts in all your drawings. Only one element could be enough but don;t worry, even if you overcrowded a dress, you could always sketch it again and simplify it. I am not interested in the color now because structure is construction is all i need. The color and textures, you can add them later. Going to the next theme, the modern sculpture helped me to imagine big and asymmetric volumes. The holes can be replaced by patterns or folding or they can be left as holes if you want. For the second drawing I was in love with the wrinkles and dynamic forms of the sculpture. I immediately thought of a nice ivory dress exploring the foldings. For the upper part i imagined tridimensional volumes but for the lower part i thought of just using lines to create graphic flat and fake folding. I considered adding volume everywhere could be too much, so I reduce it and left it only in the upper part of my outfit. For the third costume, I said i could use Pierre Soulages abstract paintings. Soulages is a French painter, engraver, and sculptor who was called "the painter of black"- the reasons are obvious, i guess. The stripes inspired me to create a costume by overlapping stripes in multiple directions: diagonals, verticals or horizontals. Going to my next 3 sketches, once again I used an Pierre Soulages painting. I had to add the beautiful blue because this is in fact what a sketch does. If you will look at it in a few years, you should remember even the source of inspiration. I had to capture the blue, so I choose to add colors on this sketch. If you will decide later what colors should have your outfit, there is no need to add it right now. The second outfit was inspired by and abstract sculpture that reminded me of a Romanian sculpture, Ovidiu Maitec. The holes and the organic shapes were something that I had to explore and use. As about the last one, the stretched fibers and draping and also the color inspired me to create a vibrant dress in a fine transparent material. Hope you enjoyed my video and now, see the images for my challenge for next week. Also, if you did not subscribed yet, please do. Thank you and take care:)

PAINT (& CHAT) WITH ME: Female Fashion Portrait Watercolor Demo (Kirsten Zellers)
READ ME! Hey friends! I painted this image of Kirsten Zellers (@kirstenzellers on IG) and filmed the process. Details, darkening, and lightening were added after the fact to get the final result. I felt like sharing some of my thoughts today as well. This was something that's been on my mind a lot lately and I'd love to know how you feel about the topic of fulfillment. The past 1-2 years has been full of huge life transitions for me which wouldn't have happened if I didn't make the dedicated choice to change and persevere. I started living my life a bit differently and have tried to say "yes" to new things while crossing things I've always wanted to do off of my mental list. I'd love to know what some of your desires are as well. I hope you like this video, it's a bit different but sometimes we just need to get thoughts out, right? ;) LINKS MENTIONED: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Want to learn more? MET Gala 2018: Fashion Faceoff | Deepika Padukone vs Priyanka Chopra | Pinkvilla
Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone attended their MET Gala and needless to say became a talking point instantly. Watch on the video to find out whose appearance made a powerful impact and whose fizzled out immediately. MET Gala is here!! It was the first Monday of May and it was Met Gala time. The fundraiser over the years has had extremely intriguing, interesting and mind-boggling themes. This year by far has to the most controversial one. The 2018 theme focused on "fashion and religion" (two of the most sensitive themes put together). The theme was: Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and Catholic Imagination. It has been said that the topic was chosen since many major designers such as John Galliano and Riccardo Tisci have been referencing religion in their collections. The glamorous fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute is held annually on the first Monday of May. The invitation-only event raises money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. The ball saw a glamourous guestlist with celebrities like Rihanna, Madonna, Blake Lively, Vogue-editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, George and Amal Clooney, Miley Cyrus, Gigi and Bella Hadid, Kim Kardashian West, Kylie and Kendall Jenner, Ariana Grande. Selena Gomez to name a few. "Freedom of Fashion: Dress Codes and Sartorial Liberty" | Nathaniel Adams | TEDxJerseyCity
Dressing is a function as basic as eating or drinking and, in the right conditions, putting together an outfit can be as pleasurable and rewarding as cooking a good meal or mixing a good drink. We value our right to dress as we please and bristle at dress codes that tell us what we can and can’t wear. Yet in our increasingly globalized and multicultural world people’s sartorial choices and traditions come into conflict, and clothes become as potent a source of contention as words. From freeing the nipple to banning the burqa, the arguments over values, identity, equality, and liberty can revolve around clothes in a profound way. Can (and should) there be true sartorial liberty? Nathaniel Adams is a writer and menswear designer living in downtown Jersey City. He is the co-author, with photographer Rose Callahan, of I am Dandy: The Return of the Elegant Gentleman, and the co-founder, with Dr. Lee-Jon Ball, of the Secret Empire custom suiting firm. An expert on the topic of dandyism, Nathaniel has spoken at New York University, the Fashion Institute of Technology, Pratt Institute, the National Arts Club, and Disneyland. His has written for The New York Times, Harper’s Bazaar, Men’s Journal, The Rake, and The Chap, and is currently writing a biography of 19th-Century champagne magnate Charles Heidsieck as well as a second volume of I am Dandy. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
