Fin Whales In The Sea Of Cortez

03:44
Viewing fin whales in the Sea of Cortez from the catamaran , Gato Loco on February 17, 2018. Unlike humpback whales, fin whales only roll showing their backs, and do not breach. They will blow and roll 4 to 5 times before heading to the bottom to feed. When you see their fin that's when they will dive. Fin whales are the 2nd largest mammal on earth.

Entangled Fin Whale off Dana Point, California

01:05
On Friday, October 9, 2015 a private fisherman found the entangled fin whale about 1.5 miles straight off Dana Point. The Ocean Institute's vessel Sea Explorer was the first commercial boat on scene and our whale watching vessel, Manute’a, caught up with it about 3.5 to 4 miles down the coast. The whale was traveling at about 1.5 knots in a southerly direction. The line appeared to be deeply embedded in the whale just behind the blow holes and was not trailing traps or nets. The line also seemed to be old and covered in clumps of barnacles. The condition of the line and depth of the line in the blubber suggests it has been on the whale for a long time. Our catamaran Manute'a followed the entangled fin whale for over two hours with passengers on board. We were able to get very close looks at the animal from both the deck of the boat and underwater in our Eye-to-Eye Underwater Viewing Pods. This provided much needed information to the rescue teams. Despite great efforts by all the rescue personnel, the whale was not able to be freed from the line. It's estimated that nearly 1,000 dolphins and whales die every day around the world due to entanglement. RARE FOOTAGE OF FIN WHALE GROUP BEHAVIOUR

01:09
MICS uses drones as the main tool in its entanglement research project to assess scarring rates in fin whales. Those amazing clips provide us with a brand new perspective that allows us to see things we normally wouldn’t. It appears that a couple of individuals each approach the animal ahead of them from the right to nudge them. Those individuals react by shifting direction slightly and rolling onto their left side. Fin whales are a gregarious species, meaning they can often be found in groups. They likely use group foraging technique when looking for food, like many other species of cetaceans. KILLER WHALES VS. FIN WHALE

Killer Whales vs. Fin Whale. In this rare event, a pod of killer whales hunt and kill a large fin whale. Most the time the fin whales anti-predatory defense strategy keeps it safe, but this time it falls prey to the pod. What Attacked the St Austell Fin Whale?

06:07
The St Austell whale was beached in 2012, though some speculations from frontiersofzoology.com suggest some unknown sea monster attacked it. This is based on two long rows of puncture wounds that appear to be bite marks from a long-jawed creature. Possibly the prehistoric pliosaur, mosasaur, or some other surviving marine reptile. Drone Films Huge Fin Whales Near Whale Watching Boat

01:01
Whale watchers got the show of a lifetime when multiple fin whales "mugged" (circled very closely) their catamaran, operated by Captain Dave's Dolphin & Whale Watching Safari. One of the fin whales even jumped in the air, a very rare occurance. Due to their massive size fin whales are hardly ever seen breaching. The encounters, filmed by licensed drone pilot Domenic Biagini and on-board ship photographer Steve Plantz, occurred recently off the coast of Dana Point. During the "mugging" Capt. Dave's boat remained in neutral so the animals were not disturbed. Fin whales are the second largest baleen whale in the world, after blue whales. They are seen throughout the year off Dana Point. Fin whales can measure over 80 feet in length and weigh up to 80 tons. Fin whales are very fast and capable of speeds up to 23 miles per hour, leading to the nickname greyhound of the sea. They eat primarily krill and small schooling fish. Due to its size and speed the only natural predator of fin whales are orcas. With its rich and diverse marine eco-system, Dana Point is one of the best places in the world for whale watching. In addition to fin whales, other whales include blue whales, humpback whales, gray whales, minke whales, Bryde’s whales, false killer whales, pilot whales, and killer whales can be seen seen at various times throughout the year. Five different species of dolphins are also encountered year-round. ***** Captain Dave's Dolphin and Whale Watching Safari offers daily, year-round, dolphin and whale watching trips from Dana Point, California, aboard a hi-tech catamaran sailboat with Eye-to-Eye Underwater Viewing Pods.
