How To Beat Personality Tests In Job Interviews

06:25
Feeling stuck in your job search? Not sure what's wrong? Check out Work It Daily's FREE tutorial on how to fix the things that could be holding you back in your job search: https://www.workitdaily.com/why-shut-out-hiring-process-youtube/ Employers judge job candidates in three key areas: personality, aptitude, and experience - in that order. As a result, some companies make candidates take personality tests during the hiring process to make sure they filter out candidates who might not be the best fit. If you’re intimidated by the thought of taking one of these personality tests, you’re not alone. But the best way to beat personality tests during the hiring process is to be prepared. And that’s what I’m here to help you with today! Let me start by explaining the types of tests employers could give you. 3 Basic Test Types: - Cognition and ability - Simulations and skills - Personality and other indicators Now, let’s get into why companies use these types of tests. Companies use them to… - Weed out ill-fitting applicants - Be objective - Overcome lying - Replace references - Reduce turnover Let’s practice really quickly. If you were given the following options, which would YOU choose? - I enjoy the thrill of meeting new people. - I like to be alone most of the time. - It’s hard for me to make conversation with people I don’t know. - I like being to center of attention. This is an example of a behavioral question. You need to think about the position you’re applying for and choose the answer that makes the most sense for the role. For example, if the position you’re applying for deals with cold calling and a lot of client interaction, then the employer will be looking for people who chose the answer “I enjoy the thrill of meeting new people.” While you want to be honest in these tests, you also need to keep in mind what answers they would be looking for a specific role. This leads me into ways you can prepare for these interviews. Tips for Success: - Do your homework - Be honest - Don’t be extreme - Ask questions: What is the test measuring? Is it going on file? Can I get the results? If you need more ideas for questions to asking during your interview, check out our video the 8 Smart Interview Questions To Ask Hiring Managers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y95eI-ek_E8 If you’re having a hard time even getting interviews, I’ve got a free resource that could help address some issues that could be holding you back. This lesson comes from a request by Aditya from Maharashtra, India. Aditya says he is preparing for a competitive exam and he has to do reading comprehension exercises as part of the exam, and he wants to know the best way to do these. Before we start, if you want to request a lesson, just leave a comment. In your comment, tell me your name, and I will mention you in the video. OK, in this lesson I will give you some important tips and strategies for reading comprehension exercises. I will give you a reading plan that you can follow, and there are exercises in this lesson for you to practice. Alright, now my teaching experience is mostly with exams like the IELTS and TOEFL, but the tips that I give you in this lesson will help you in any exam situation. So the first thing is: when it comes to reading in an exam, budget your time. That means: you should know how many reading passages there are in the exam, how many exercises there are and how much time you have. In the IELTS exam, for example, there are three reading passages and you have one hour to do all of them. So then divide your time amongst those passages – for IELTS, you might spend roughly 20 minutes per passage. In some exams, one passage might be shorter or easier, and another passage might be longer or more difficult. In that case, obviously, you should plan to spend less time on the short passage, and more time on the long passage. And you should time yourself – if you are allowed to wear a watch in your exam, look at your watch and keep track of the time. If you plan for 20 minutes per passage, stick to that plan. Now, if you’re not allowed to wear a watch, then use the clock in the room or hall, or ask the invigilators how much time you have left. Alright, that’s the first thing: budgeting your time. So now the exam starts – and you have the first reading passage in front of you – what do you do? Well, I’ll tell you what you should NOT do – don’t start at the beginning and read slowly to the finish. Many students do this – and the problem is that when you get to the end, you will have forgotten a lot of the details in the middle, and when you read the questions, you have to go back and read the passage again to find the answers. Instead, here’s the plan that you should follow: your first step in reading should be to skim the passage. What does that mean? Well, skimming is actually something that we do with milk. It’s when you heat or boil milk, and the fat rises to the top in the form of cream. Removing that layer of fat is called skimming. When it comes to reading, skimming means to read the surface of the text quickly to understand the overall message. So if there’s a heading or title to the passage, and if there are subheadings, read all of these first. They will tell you the subject of the text. Then read the first sentence of each paragraph – they will give you a good idea of the overall message. Let’s practice this. You see two paragraphs on the screen, but only the first sentence in each paragraph is visible. Stop the video, read the sentences and try to understand the main topic in each paragraph. Alright, so what do you think the topic of the whole passage might be? It could be the negative effects of social media on children. What about the first paragraph? What is it about? Well it says that using social media can affect a child’s writing skills. And the second paragraph? It says that some people don’t agree with this – that is, the first paragraph – for two reasons: scientific reasons and practical reasons (pragmatic).

IELTS Speaking Task 1 - How to get a high score

19:18
http://www.goodluckielts.com/ Do you need to take the IELTS? I will teach you everything you need to get a higher score in Task 1 of the Speaking section of the exam! A lot of people have to take the IELTS exam when they immigrate or study overseas. Even if your English is good, you could get a low score in the Speaking section if you are not prepared. If you are taking this test, this video will help you. I'll tell you what to expect and give you a lot of tips and strategies to do well! To test your understanding of the video, take the quiz at http://www.engvid.com/ielts-speaking-task-1/ and for more IELTS tips, strategies, secrets, and sample questions and answers, go to Good Luck IELTS: http://www.goodluckielts.com/ Hi, there. My name is Emma, and in today's lesson, we will be looking at how to do well on the speaking part of the IELTS. So the speaking part of the IELTS is divided up into three sections. Today, we're just going to be looking at section No. 1. So first of all, I will explain how to do well -- oh, sorry. First, I'll explain what happens in Part 1 of the IELTS. And from there, we'll look at some things you should do to do well and some things you shouldn't do, okay? So let's get started. So what happens in Part 1 of the IELTS? Well, first of all, the speaking Part 1 of the IELTS is for both those taking the General IELTS exam and the Academic. So whether you're taking the Academic or the General IELTS, it's the same test with the same questions. Okay. It lasts between four to five minutes. It's made up of first an introduction. So the examiner is going to introduce himself or herself. Then, you will introduce yourself. So for example, "Hi. My name is Emma. Nice to meet you." Okay, so there's an introduction. And then, the examiner is going to ask you some questions about yourself. So these questions aren't that difficult. Usually, they're about where you're from. So for example what city you were born in, where you grew up. They might be about work. They might be about what you study, about your friends, about your hobbies, food, sports, and another thing I don't have up here, family. Family is also common on this part of the IELTS. Okay? So usually, the examiner, after introducing himself or herself, they will talk to you about two of these topics. Okay?" Now, the way they mark this part of the IELTS is they're looking specifically for pronunciation, okay? So can they understand what you're saying? Do you pronounce things well? They're going to be looking at fluency. So what's "fluency"? Well, do you go, "Uh, um, uh, uh" a lot during the test? Or do you speak very clearly, in a very nice rhythmic way? Do you use organizers or transitions? "First of all, secondly, finally." Do you use words like this? "Another reason." Or do you have problems speaking at a normal rate? So they look at that in fluency." Then, they mark you also on vocabulary. Do you use words like "good, bad" a lot? Those are very low-level words. Or do you use high level words that really show off your vocabulary?" The final thing you're marked on is grammar and accuracy. So for example, do you only use the present test for the whole test or are you able to correctly use the present tense, the past tense, present perfect, future? How well is your grammar? Okay? So don't panic. Maybe you're weak in grammar. Maybe you make some mistakes in grammar. But you're marked equally on these four components, okay? So now, let's look at some tips on how to do well on Part 1 of the speaking part of the IELTS. Okay. So what are some of the things we should do to get a good mark in Part 1 of the IELTS for speaking? Well, we have a list here of dos. Okay? So these are things you want to do. So the first thing that's very important is when you first meet the examiner, okay? If you're very nervous, and you don't make eye-contact, and you look at the floor the whole time, you're not going to do well on the IELTS even if your English is pretty good. So it's very important to present yourself with confidence, okay? You want to go into that test and know you're going to do well. If you think you're going to do well, you're going to do a lot better. Okay? If you think you're going to do badly, you're probably going to do badly. So think you're going to do well, and be confident. Okay? Another important thing is be friendly. Okay. You want to smile. Body language is actually very important in the IELTS. You want to make eye-contact, okay? So don't look at your feet. Don't look at your hands. Look at the examiner. But you don't have to stare at them, okay? Just look at them when you talk.

iTEP English Proficiency Tests

02:36
http://itepexam.com Get to know the most convenient, comprehensive, and affordable English test, the International Test of English Proficiency (iTEP). iTEP exams are used by colleges, universities, secondary schools, boarding schools and businesses throughout the world. Video transcript: iTEP, or International Test of English Proficiency, is an English assessment test designed to be more convenient, comprehensive, and affordable for students and administrators alike. It can be taken on-demand over 90 minutes at secure test centers all over the world. In addition to iTEP's detailed score report, administrators can access speaking and writing samples to get a more complete picture. There are 3 types of iTEP exams. iTEP Academic is used for admissions by colleges and universities all over the United States. Intensive English programs or IEPs often use the test for placement. It can even be taken at home in these cases. iTEP scores match up to CEFR levels and can easily be compared to other tests. iTEP SLATE (Secondary Level Assessment Test of English) is specially designed for young learners and used by boarding schools and private high schools. In fact, iTEP SLATE is the most widely available and technologically advanced English test made for this market. ITEP Business tests a speaker's fluency in workplace English. It is used by large and small companies for hiring decisions, promotions, and progress monitoring. Each iTEP exam is also available in its Core form, which lasts an hour and is scored immediately. Denise Kinsella, Associate Dean, International Education Center, Santa Monica College: iTEP is an accurate and reliable measure of our students' ability to speak English. It's a very convenient test for them. It's less expensive than other tests and we get the results much more quickly so we can make an admission decision without the student having to wait a long period of time. For us, iTEP has been a better measure of our students' ability to be successful in their classes. Roger Riske, President Emeritus, Educational Resource Development Trust: I've been working in the international secondary school exchange field for more than 30 years and I have found that the SLATE test developed by Boston Educational Services is by far the most reliable, secure, and user-friendly test available on the market. It gives secondary school admissions officers and counselors the necessary information to evaluate all aspects of students' linguistic abilities: writing, reading, and understanding.

How to write a good essay: Paraphrasing the question

14:39
Do you sometimes struggle to begin writing an essay when taking an exam? Good news! There is an important writing skill that will help you improve your essay introductions. This technique is called "paraphrasing", and it means rewriting something using different words. In this lesson, I will teach you how to paraphrase successfully and how to change essay questions into your own words. These skills are very useful for university and high school students, as well as any students writing English proficiency exams like the TOEFL or IELTS. TAKE THE QUIZ: http://www.engvid.com/how-to-write-a-good-essay-paraphrasing-the-question/ WATCH NEXT: Essay Writing – 6 ways to compare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8WSzwBD7GQ TRANSCRIPT Hi, there. My name is Emma, and in today's video I'm going to teach you something very important for if you're taking any type of test that has a writing component. So, if you are taking the IELTS, the TOEFL, the CELPIP, even just a university test, it can be any type of test, but if you're asked to write something like an essay or a paragraph, this video is for you. Okay? So I'm going to teach you a very important skill that will help improve your marks when it comes to writing on tests. So, let's get started. So, I have here an essay question. This question is actually... I've seen it on the IELTS. You know, you have similar types of questions on the TOEFL, sometimes in university. The question is this: "Education is the single most important factor in the development of a country. Do you agree or disagree?" Or maybe: "To what extent do you agree or disagree?" So, this is an example of a question you might be asked. Now, a problem a lot of students have is in their answer to this question. They see this, and they think: "Okay, education is the most important factor in the development of a country, yes, I agree." So then they... Or: "I disagree", and they start writing. And what do they write? Usually the very first thing students will write is this: "I agree that education is the single most important factor in the development of a country because..." So, what is the problem with this? Is there any problem to start off your essay with something like this, or to start off your answer? There's a big problem. So I want you to take a moment and think: "What could be the problem with starting your essay off with this sentence?" Okay, well, if you noticed, you have here the word: "education, education, is, is, the single most important, most important factor". If you notice, these are the same. They're the exact same, except for: "I agree that" and "because". The student, here, has used the exact same wording that is in the question. So, if you do this on the IELTS-and many students do this, same with on the TOEFL-you actually will lose marks, and same with in university, because you're not showing your abilities; you're just copying what somebody else has said or what the essay question is. So, in this video, I'm going to show you first off... First off, I'm going to tell you: Don't do this, don't copy. And I'm going to teach you ways in order to improve yourself and your answer by changing this wording. How can you change your introduction so it's different than what the question is? Okay? So, let's look at how to make these changes. Okay, so what we are going to do in order to change the question into a proper answer that doesn't just copy the question, is we are going to paraphrase. So, the word here is: "paraphrase". This might be a new word for you. What does it mean to paraphrase something? Well, when we paraphrase, it means we take a sentence that, you know... We take somebody else's sentence and we change it into our own words. Okay? So, we change the words of a sentence, we also change maybe the sentence structure, but we keep all the same meaning. Okay? So, the meaning from the sentence you copy, it stays the same, same meaning, but different words and different sentence structure. Okay? So it's in your words, but this other person's meaning. So, we are going to paraphrase this example of a question into our own words. So, first we're going to look at how to do that using vocabulary and synonyms. So, we have here the same question: "Education is the single most important factor in the development of a country." How can we put this into new words or our own words that keep the same meaning? Well, we can use synonyms. So, this might be a new word for you, too. A "synonym". "Synonyms" are words that have the same meaning, but are different words.

Examagram Explained - Free Online English Testing

The Examagram explained video, gives a greater insight to the services offered by Examagram giving screen shots of the service and details on the process. So we are up and running and the early signs from our growing user base are very positive. The service is reliable, user friendly and most importantly offers an accurate testing service for the users. To understand the service it is important to understand the thought and drivers behind the creation of Examagram. Having had a number of years recruiting outside the UK in Africa and Asia between us, there was a continual requirement that was consistent when recruiting within the developing economies and this was the need to speak English. Soft skills, people skills and the ability to communicate was essential to every role. In many cases, it is an overriding factor in the decision making process. Quite often it is the interview stage which determines a candidate's ability to communicate. This is nearly always determined in the first five minutes or in most cases the first one minute of the interview. Assuming the communication skills are sufficient the next 25 to 45 minutes of the interview are used to determine suitability of role on a technical or experience basis. However, if the communication skills are insufficient and it is determined that the candidate is not suitable for the role in the early stages of the interview then the remaining time in the interview can start to have negative effects. When looking at the effects anyone who has ever recruited will empathize with the frustrations of having to continue with an interview when they already know they have not got the right person and so often this is concluded based on communication skills. Although, it is difficult to quantify the wasted interview time in working hours, this is a direct avoidable cost to the business. The other waste on a recruiting manager's time is the time spent assessing the candidates CV's during the shortlisting process along with the indirect cost of not interviewing a candidate with excellent communication skills (which simply cannot be assessed by viewing a CV). How much more effective would interviews be if the language/communication skills had been pre-screened before the interview? Would a line manager decide to interview a candidate knowing that they had poor communication skills? We should also factor in the perspective candidates experience (which may well have been unpleasant), who in turn will tell friends, family and associates of their experience, ultimately have a negative impact on the external image of the business within the recruitment market and on other potential employees. Every candidate goes to an interview with an expectation of having a chance of getting the job but the reality is with some that the chances are very unlikely as the communication skills are not to the desired standard. Why would anyone want to find this out at the interview stage? Lastly, when considering the negative effects of unproductive interviews, we should factor in the processing time and the drain on internal HR departments. Again the man hours spent organizing the interview, greeting the candidates, printing/sending CV's and completing the relevant checks and forms. All of this effort is wasted following a 5 minutes judgment on a candidate's communication in the opening minutes of an interview. All of the wastage can be avoided by an online test that allows the candidate to prove a level communication competence prior to the interview. Of course, all of the above is written on the assumption that the hiring managers and HR departments have the skills and competence required to even test a perspective employees communication skills. However, in many cases communication skills are completely unqualified by a business and consequently lowering the expectation of communications skills throughout a business. It would be interesting to know how many MD's or CEO's of businesses genuinely believe that all of their managers are competent enough to be able to judge and assess communication skills. Similarly, how many HR Directors or managers would trust their internal recruitment teams to judge the communication or English skills of a candidate at all levels. So why don't all recruiters use online tests? All too often as recruiters, we at Examagram had experience of clients asking us for an online English test to pre-screen candidates.
