Toni Basil - Mickey 1982

03:08
Good quality rare video recorded live in the studio of Top of the pops 1982. Toni Basil (born Antonia Christina Basilotta on September 22, 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American singer-songwriter, actor, filmmaker, film director and choreographer, best-known for her multi-million-selling worldwide No.1 hit "Mickey" from 1982. Basil's recording career began in 1966 with a single for A&M Records which was the title song from the short film Breakaway. This film was made by internationally famous filmmaker and artist Bruce Conner, and backed with "I'm 28," an obscure Graham Gouldman song. She appeared as a guest during the first season of Saturday Night Live as one of The Lockers and on later seasons as a singer as well as a filmmaker with her urban style "Swan Lake". In 1982, she released the single "Mickey", which went on to achieve international success. This song is a cover of "Kitty," a 1979 release by the UK band Racey, written by British hitmakers Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman and produced by Mike Chapman. The original song did not include the famous 'Oh Mickey, you're so fine' chant, which Basil added. "Mickey" was actually recorded in 1980 and the video was conceived, directed, and choreographed by Basil herself for the UK-based label Radial Choice nearly a year before the inception of MTV in 1981. Issued on Chrysalis Records in September 1982, the song knocked Lionel Richie out of #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 in December. The infectious 45 was quickly certified Gold and in early 1983 reached Platinum status for sales of over 2 million copies in the United States alone. The music video for "Mickey" was one of the most popular early MTV videos. In the video, Basil wore her head cheerleader uniform from Las Vegas High School from which she graduated. During an interview on VH1's "100 Greatest Songs of The 80's", Basil revealed that she still owns the same cheerleader sweater she wore in the video. In 2003, VH1 ranked "Mickey" Number 6 on its list of the 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the '80s. For Television, Basil has appeared as an actress and featured singer/dancer in many television shows and specials. She co-directed and choreographed two BBC specials with Adam Walsh and Ken Stephinson called "Toni Basil Tape 1" and Toni Basil Tape 2" which catapulted her song "Mickey" to number one worldwide. Basil's recording career consists of only two albums. Her first album, 1982's Word of Mouth included a second Hot 100 single "Shoppin' from A to Z," as well as three songs by Devo, with the group providing the backing track. The track "Space Girls" was a re-recording of a 1974 Devo demo titled "Space Girl Blues" that would later be released on Devo's "Hardcore Devo: Volume One". Devo member Gerald V. Casale and Toni were in a relationship at the time and Basil had been an early supporter of the group. Toni Basil (1983), the eponymous artist's second album, yielded Basil's third and final Hot 100 charting single, "Over My Head," which also reached No.4 on the U.S. Dance chart. Her song "Girls Night Out" made an appearance on the soundtrack to the 1986 film Modern Girls. To date, there have been no fewer than five Toni Basil best-of collections released on CD. In 1999, DJ and producer Jason Nevin's dance remix of "Mickey" was a big club hit in Europe and Australia. Basil had others hits internationally, like her single "Street Beat" which was a smash hit in the Philippines. Basil also contributed vocals for a Devo song "The Only One" in 1987, which wasn't released until 2000 on the demo compilation Recombo DNA. Toni Basil's awards include Hip Hop International's Living Legend Award, a Grammy nomination for Long Form Video ("Word Of Mouth") 1983, an Emmy nomination and win for Outstanding Achievement in Choreography / The Smothers Brothers 1988, two MTV Award nominations, American Choreography Awards: Four nominations & Two Wins including Lifetime Achievement Innovator, and The Los Angeles Theater Ovation: Street Dance Award. Exhibitions include the Museum of Modern Art: videos and the Santa Monica Museum of Art: Short films. She has also received Platinum and Gold Discs in the USA, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Philippines, and France. Her single Mickey was installed in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as one of the groundbreaking singles of the 1980s.[9] She was given tribute at The Choreographers Carnival: Monsters of Hip-Hop Masters of Movement, and in Portraits of America's Great Choreographers. She was featured in the "Museum of Modern Art Calendar of Artists" and on the cover of Dance Magazine. Please visit my other Channel. -------------I DO NOT own this movie. No Copyright intended---------- Robin and the 7 Hoods (1964) This was the first movie that I was presented as a featured dancer. I’m SO lucky that there was a documentary made of this film, which I was a part of. I was even luckier to walk arm and arm with Frank Sinatra while he sang Chicago (My Kind of Town). This film was released 1964 but was filmed 1963. I was on the set rehearsing when we heard the news- John F Kennedy had been shot. The studio closed down that day, and we all left in shock. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Social Networks: Twitter: https://twitter.com/Toni_Basil Instagram: http://instagram.com/OfficialToniBasil Facebook Fan Page: https://www.facebook.com/OfficialToniBasil

Sep. 22, 1943 Toni Basil, Hey Mickey

03:27
Antonia Christina Basilotta (born September 22, 1943), better known by her stage name Toni Basil, is an American singer, actress, choreographer, dancer, and filmmaker, best known for her multi-million-selling worldwide 1982 hit "Mickey", which reached No 1 in several countries. Basil's recording career began in 1966 with a single for A&M Records which was the title song from the short film Breakaway, and the B-side was "I'm 28" written by Graham Gouldman who later co-founded 10cc. This film was made by artist Bruce Conner. Basil was asked to sing, solo, the swinging jazz number "Wham Rebop Boom Bam" in the first season of Saturday Night Live for the January 17, 1976 show with Buck Henry as host. Toni sold out solo shows at The Roxy in Los Angeles in June 1976, and sang the song on The Merv Griffin Show. She also guested with The Lockers during the first season of Saturday Night Live and, on later seasons, as a singer and filmmaker, to perform in her urban style Swan Lake. In 1982, she released the single "Mickey", which went on to achieve international success. This song is a cover of "Kitty," a 1979 release by the UK band Racey, written by British songwriters Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman and produced by Chapman. The original song did not include the famous "Oh Mickey, you're so fine" chant, which Basil added. "Mickey" was actually recorded in 1980 and the video was conceived, directed, and choreographed by Basil herself for the UK-based label Radialchoice nearly a year before the inception of MTV in 1981. Issued on Chrysalis Records in September 1982 in the USA, the song knocked Lionel Richie from No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December. It also topped the chart in Canada where it was issued by Virgin Records. In 2009, VH1 ranked "Mickey" Number 5 on its list of the 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the '80s. In 2017 she sued the makers of South Park over their use of the song in parodying Barack Obama's 2008 election win. For television, Basil has appeared as an actress and featured singer/dancer in many television shows and specials. She co-directed and choreographed two BBC specials with Alan Walsh and Ken Stephenson called "Toni Basil Tape 1" and "Toni Basil Tape 2". Devo member Gerald Casale and Basil were in a relationship at the time, and Basil had been an early supporter of the group. Toni Basil (1983), her eponymous second album, yielded a third and final Hot 100 charting single, "Over My Head," which reached No. 4 on the U.S. Dance chart. Her song "Girls Night Out" appeared on the soundtrack to the 1986 movie Modern Girls. To date, there have been five Toni Basil best of collections released on CD. In 1999, DJ and producer Jason Nevins's dance remix of "Mickey" was a club hit in Europe and Australia. Basil contributed vocals for the Devo song "The Only One" in 1987, part of the soundtrack the flop horror film Slaughterhouse Rock, which Basil also starred in. The song was not released until 2000 on the demo compilation Recombo DNA. Wikipedia Disclaimer: I do not own the copyright to this recording. Toni Basil Reflects James Brown on the TAMI SHOW HD

06:22
(Correction: The Famous Flames in this clip are Bobby Bennett, Lloyd Stallworth, Bobby Byrd.) I reflect about experiencing James Brown, the famous flames and full orchestra LIVE on the TAMI Show 1964 as the assistant choreographer. I talk about the different dance styles that were used in the show from the chorus dancers, that were originally trained in Jazz but could cross over to the social dance steps of the time, like The Pony, The Jerk, The Twist, etc…, The chorus dancers in the TAMI show were the most popular television and movie dancers during this time period. They danced on shin ding, and most of the AIP beach films (As I was featured in these films you can view them on my channel). The real-deal legitimate Go Go Dancers hired for the show were the most famous club dancers in LA. The two girls in the fringe were known as Essie and Debbie and the male and female are Stevie and Joy Ciro. They took the name, Ciro, because they were the resident dancer’s at the most popular club on the Sunset strip- Ciro’s Club - The most famous night club of the time. That’s where I first saw acts like, Junior walker and the all stars and Ike and Tina Turner, Little did I know that in 1978, I would become Tina’s choreographer for the next 32 years. Seeing James Brown that night, changed my life, changed my dance style and pulled the rug right from under me. I thought I was the best Go Go Dancers happening anywhere, but after I saw him I realized I hadn’t crossed over to the other side of town and that I actually knew nothing. I continued to strive but the reality is, none of us will ever really attain the full breath of theatrical performance that James delivered from his music, his vocals, and his dance. ------------------------------------------ Social Networks: Twitter: https://twitter.com/Toni_Basil Instagram: http://instagram.com/OfficialToniBasil Facebook Fan Page: https://www.facebook.com/OfficialToniBasil

Thief On The Loose Toni Basil

A song that I wrote with Greg Matheson and Trevor Veitch on my first album. I preformed it in my first BBC special in 1981, where I got to put everything together; the singing, and all my styles of dance: ballet, locking, waaking, posing, and pointe work. The BBC gave me the opportunity to write my special and co-direct it with Alan Walsh. The show was one of two BBC specials of mine produced by Adam Walsh and Ken Stephenson. The show was originally named "Toni Basil Tape One", but is now cataloged in the BBC library as the "Toni Basil Show".

Breaking Into... Dance with Toni Basil | BHL's Breaking Into

54:14
Breaking Into... -- In this episode Black Hollywood Live host James Lott Jr. interviews Toni Basil. Toni Basil began her career as a dancer and assistant choreographer, working on such shows as Hullabaloo (1965) choreographed by David Winters. Later, she choreographed the hit film American Graffiti (1973) and also began appearing in films, including the now-classic Easy Rider (1969). After several films, she launched her music career with her first album, "Word of Mouth", in 1981, which was released both as a record and a video, quite an innovation at the time. Culled from that album was a innocent little ditty called "Mickey", which soon became a massive hit all over the world, first in Britain. The song topped the American music charts in December 1982, and the video (directed by Basil, as were all of her others) still receives airplay, today. In 1984, Toni Basil's self-titled follow-up album was released, which included the American Top 40 hit "Over My Head". Although she found future chart success elusive, Basil remained busy appearing in such films as Rockula (1990) and has appeared in a guest shot onBaywatch (1989) in the late 1990s. Her choreographer talents have also been utilized lately by superstars Bette Midler and David Bowie and, in 1998, she choreographed a successful ad for "The Gap". In Season Three of the hit competition series hosted by Mario Lopez, THE X FACTOR judges will travel the nation searching for talent 12 years old or over -- both solo artists and vocal groups -- who are willing to brave the panel for a chance to make their dreams of becoming a superstar come true. Auditions for THE X FACTOR were held this spring in Los Angeles, CA; Charleston, SC; New Orleans, LA; Long Island, NY; and Denver, CO. Contestants will audition in front of THE X FACTOR judges, including Simon Cowell, Demi Lovato, Kelly Rowland, Paulina Rubio, and an audience of thousands. This will be the ultimate test to prove they have the vocal ability, charisma and stage presence it takes to become a global superstar or breakout music act and win a recording contract with Syco/Sony Music. Those contestants who survive the first auditions will be divided into four categories: Boys, Girls, Over 25s and Groups. Each category will be mentored by one of the show's judges. Not only is it a competition between the hopefuls to stake their claim for the coveted win, but it's also a showdown among the judges as to whose acts will dominate the competition and make it to the finals. The judges may have their say in how the competition progresses, but it will be up to America to decide who ultimately has THE X FACTOR.
