The ideal woman body throughout history + dress form figures | Justine Leconte

04:23
The ideal woman body shape has constantly evolved throughout history. In the 18th century, women would wear corsets to compress their waists and wire structures under their dresses to widen their hips. In the middle of the 19th century, curvy women were seen as beautiful and they didn't practice sports. In 1900, corsets got a bit more comfortable but a large bust was still appreciated. In the 1920's, women rejected corsets. They made their chests look flat and hid their waists behind boxy clothes to reach a boyish silhouette. After the war, their went back to looking feminine and loved the New Look brought by Christian Dior. Instead of a corset, they wore bras. In the 1960's, a more androgynous silhouette appeared and women started to wear pants. The 90's saw the rise of extremely thin models like Kate Moss, who changed the beauty ideal. In the 2010's, curves are back in trend but with a flat belly and a thigh gap. So celebrities like Kim Kardashian don't hesitate to use surgery and wear corsets in order to get the "ideal body". Making A (Modern!) Edwardian Walking Skirt || Historical Style

12:52
The next addition to my growing neo-historical wardrobe is this: an adaptation of the Edwardian walking skirt! (By the way--yes, the pins did come out of the hem after I had pressed it all into place. 0/10, would not recommend wearing your clothes with pins still in.) Shoes worn in the final shots are the ‘Gibson’ style from American Duchess. MATERIAL SOURCES: -Pattern: Truly Victorian ‘1898 Walking Skirt’ no. Women's fashions: year by year: 1949-1980

06:48
Year by year images of women's fashions, 1949-1980, with 4 frames per year - more or less arbitrary selection- pics not in any chronological order within each year.(erratum: I'm sorry but the photo of two girls outside their boutique at 1967b right hand side was, in fact, taken in 1968; Someone has also queried 1968b left hand side. saying it looks like 1970/71: am currently checking but am afraid original source lost in mists of time) The music is 'Aphrodite' by Alessandro Carabelli (details at All About Jazz website) WARNING! 1/Ideally, a slide show like this should be put together by someone with some credentials in, or a wide knowledge of, fashion history (rather than a mild interest)- but I did it anyway. I like the way the images convey the passing of years and decades. 2/ To the best of my knowledge (!) all images were published in the year shown - except that of the hippie girl in 1968b, which I believe is a later watercolour rendition of a pic of someone who attended a concert in Hyde Park, London, in that year. Ive had to try and judge which sources to trust for dates of post 1960 pattern illustrations and several individual scans. 3/Images should be seen as picked at random from each year and jumbled up within a year. The 4 frames per year do not represent any chronological order. Because fashion seasons begin in spring and autumn it is possible that things like Year A (all Dec pics) Year B (all Jan pics) Year C (all Dec pics) (meaning situations where 2 consecutive years containing one season are followed by 3 seasons being skipped before the images for the next year) could happen but blind chance makes it unlikely. Besides the hippie girl in 1968b, there are 2 other non-contemporary images: the mannequins from the Bath costume museum, at 1963a(rh) and 1970b(lh).

Victorian realities - how did they use the toilet??!

06:28
After our recent videos ( Moving in a crinoline cage; Dressing up a Victorian ), one of the most common questions was this - 'How on earth did they use the toilet in all those skirts, petticoat, bustles, crinolines and what else is there hiding under the Victorian Skirts???!' And I just couldn't ignore it - so behold, a very silly video dealing with the daily reality of a Victorian life.... No nudity, and no real natural functions are being performed - all demonstration of how the clothes moved and were manipulated. if you are easily offended by watching someone pretend to go to the loo, simply don't watch :-) Correction - When talking about the bustle folding, I of course mean accordion, not harmonica... :-( music:Camille Saint -Sans Dance Macabre

History’s deadliest colors - J. V. Maranto

View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/history-s-deadliest-colors-j-v-maranto When radium was first discovered, its luminous green color inspired people to add it into beauty products and jewelry. It wasn’t until much later that we realized that radium’s harmful effects outweighed its visual benefits. Unfortunately, radium isn’t the only pigment that historically seemed harmless or useful but turned out to be deadly. J. V. Maranto details history’s deadliest colors. Lesson by J. V. Pockets on Women's Clothes Matter More Than You Think | NBC Left Field

03:38
Women’s pants, dresses, and clothing in general often don’t have pockets, or have fake pockets, and the history, gender role implications, and controversy surrounding this detail can be much more than just a minor irritation. Maybe you think about it every time you dig for something at the bottom of a handbag or hide a tampon in your bra. Maybe you’ve never thought about it at all. But there’s undoubtedly more (often very funny) online chatter about pockets on women’s pants and dresses than ever before. He's also brought along some friends this time, as Samir, Brother Jay, and Joseph Rivera all dawn unique looks of their own, thus transitioning to a bigger message of individuality. What is Prominence of New York? Established, shot, and directed by Joseph Rivera, Prominence of New York is a New York based commercial series narrated by different entities, filmed in different locales, telling a story. A narrative of moral, growth, age, passion, character, and vision, while giving viewers a personal perspective on intricate attributes that makes New York unique. -- The city of New York has so much to provide. Being the Mecca of hip-hop, high fashion, individuality, and African American History, I want to provide the audience with an in depth and personal look at the best city in the world. With the city being over populated and increasingly diverse, I've decided to partner up with Brother Diamond to lead a series about society’s most delicate issues, while not falling short to introducing new characters with different stories between seasons. Couture the great fashion designers

01:35
Couture is a world of glamour, of history, of tradition, of signatures. This world and these signatures -- not simply labels in a dress, but complete, recognizable looks -- are the subject of a book of unmatched elegance: Couture: The Great Designers. Couture opens in the 1840s with Charles Frederick Worth, the first of the grands couturiers. Soon we are introduced to Chanel and Schiaperelli, the stars of the 1930s, and to Balenciaga, Dior, Vionnet, Lanvin, Poiret, Valentino, Armani. The book also turns to Yves Saint Laurent, whose first collection was cheered in the streets of Paris, to Norman Hartnell, whose wedding dress for the bride of the Marquess of Bath was called the "eigth wonder of the world," to the masterful designs of Claire McCardell and the vibrant ones of Issey Miyake. This splendid books gives accounts of the sublime -- including Fortuny -- and the little-known -- such as Augustabernard, whose work survives in museums, attics, and trunks. Each designer fits into a historical niche, and we learn of his or her palette, silhouette, contribution, signature. Never before has the world of couture been covered on such a grand scale. The illustrations come from the designers' own sketchpads, from period illustrations in fashion magazines, from contemporary drawings of garments in private collections, and from house photographs, manyof which are being reproduced for the first time in these pages. Prominent are famous images by famous photographers -- including Horst, Abbe, Cecel Beaton, Norman Parkinson -- and many details and accessories have been photographed specially for this book. A banquet for the senses, Couture is by far the loveliest volum on the subject. Hardcover: 430 pages Publisher: Stewart Tabori & Chang; 1987 first edition Language: English Product Dimensions: 1.5 x 10 x 12 inches

Rare 1920s Footage: All-Black Towns Living the American Dream | National Geographic

01:46
By the 1920s, Oklahoma was home to some 50 African-American towns, in addition to a large and prosperous black community living in the city of Tulsa. These towns and their self-reliant middle class and affluent residents are documented by the home movies of Reverend S. S. Jones, an itinerant minister and businessman. Known and respected by the citizens of the towns whose lives he captured on film, Rev. Jones’s work offers revealing glimpses of these communities as a haven for African Americans who very often faced discrimination elsewhere in America. The subjects are everyday life: a family on the front porch of their bungalow, shop workers at a storefront, farmers plowing their fields, children playing on seesaws in a schoolyard. Much of the material documents the economic life of the towns, from business districts filled with prosperous merchants to the homes of successful professionals, with an abundant countryside beyond. As Rhea Combs, curator of film and photography for the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture, points out in her commentary, here we even find a married couple who were oil barons, proof of the extraordinary progress made in the relatively short time since the end of slavery. The fashions and hairstyles, automobiles and horses, and even such details as a man manually pumping gasoline at a filling station make the films a fascinating record of the lives of Americans, and African Americans in particular, in the early 20th century. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. How obsessive artists colorize old photos

07:06
Photo colorization artists use a combination of research, physics, and technology to digitally reconstruct history's black and white record. The color of military uniforms, signs, vehicles, and world fashion spanning decades needs to be accounted for before even opening digital software like Photoshop. That means digging through sources like diaries, government records, old advertisements, and even consulting historical experts to get the colors right. But even after the arduous research, restoration, and blending of color, the image still isn’t finished. In order to achieve true photorealism, the physics of how light works in the atmosphere needs to be taken into account. Colors look different depending on the lighting conditions when the photo was taken, so artists rely on shadows and the location of light to make an educated guess about the time of day in a black-and-white photo. Top 10 Hidden Truths About Historical Artifacts and Inventions

14:38
When it comes to history, while there’s still some mystery to our past, we tend to think we’ve got things pretty well figured out. Many people are convinced of the origins and truths behind many famous artifacts and inventions, even though the history of them is much more complicated and bizarre than most people realize. Just like someday people will likely stumble upon the remains of a floppy disk and wonder if it was a plate, many of the things that happened through the past have become distorted through the lens of history. For some of these, the truth is still out there to be found, and it’s only been confused by modern retellings and myths. →Subscribe for new videos every day! https://www.youtube.com/user/toptenznet?sub_confirmation=1 Help us translate our videos: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_queue?msg=10&tab=0 - Learn more why you might want to help: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6052538 Find more lists at: http://www.toptenz.net Entertaining and educational top 10 lists from TopTenzNet!
