A Hotel is Just a Building | Bashar Wali | TEDxWilmingtonSalon

15:35
Humanity matters more than any material luxuries or perks that you provide your guests. Because we are people first, hoteliers second. If you can connect with your guests, you will always win. A hotel is just a building. It can’t run itself. That’s what Bashar Wali does. For more than 20 years, Wali has been driving innovation in all facets of the hospitality industry at companies like Wyndham International, Starwood and Grand Heritage Hotels. As President of Provenance Hotels, he has crafted an assertive growth plan and developed strategic partnerships that have led to marquee collaborations with James Beard Award-winning chefs and alliances with preeminent developers like Woodbine Development Corporation, Bolour and Associates, GB Lodging and Thayer Lodging to expand the company’s national presence and grow its portfolio of owned and managed hotels. Wali artfully balances this active focus on growth with maximizing the financial performance and market prominence of Provenance Hotels’ award-winning lifestyle properties in the Western United States. He is widely recognized for developing playful guest amenities like the company’s industry-leading spiritual menu and for inspiring the company’s partnerships with companies like Sub Pop Records and Salt & Straw. Based on the philosophy that it is personality, passion, sense of humor and sense of drama that differentiates Provenance Hotels from its competitors, Wali has perfected an approach to the art of hospitality that is as successful at creating memorable guest experiences as it is at putting heads in beds. Bashar Wali graduated from Johnson & Wales University with a B.S. in Hotel Restaurant Institutional Management. Officially he resides with his family in Portland, Ore. but can often be found jetting to new markets and kicking the tires on potential Provenance Hotels. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Top 10 Hotel Management Tips for Managers in the Hospitality Industry

06:30
http://www.ampli.com/ Hotel managers have the task of ensuring customers are satisfied and overseeing all of the different activities and departments of a hotel: banquet hall, restaurant, conference center, tourist attraction, fitness center, spa/wellness center, and more. Here are the Top 10 Tips for Managing a Hotel: 10. Build and lead a great team. As a hotel manager, you are only as good as the team around you. That is why forming and fostering a great team is of utmost importance. Focus on developing a company culture that reflects the goals of the company. Connect with workers and be present in the life of the hotel. As a manager, a compliment and a smile go a long way to developing a positive team environment. 9. Always learning and improving. Hotel managers are often a jack-of-all-trades because their position forces them to be: business manager, recruiter, teacher, trainer, cleaner, crowd controller, bartender, the list goes on! 8. Greet your guests. The classic rock song Hotel California's lyrics captures the power of a good first impression of a hotel manager, "There she stood in the doorway // I heard the mission bell // And I was thinking to myself // This could be Heaven or this could be Hell." 7. Be Prepared for Emergencies. The Radio Hailer Emergency Communication System Because the availability of electricity is not always an option during these situations, it is important to have a communication channel that is not dependent on electricity. A battery-powered Portable Public Address System is the perfect option. The Radio Hailer Emergency Communication System from AmpliVox allows users to communicate over a mile and to an audience of up to 5,000 people, while the Safety Strobe Megaphone will record your emergency message and play it back amplified. 6. Strategic Business Relationships. Whether it be offering guests coupons to a local restaurant, offering discounts through tourist destinations, or partnering with local universities and corporations, strategic business relationships can be a powerful way to ensure a constant stream of people are coming through your doors. 5. Be internet savvy. There are several reasons why hotel and restaurant management professionals need to be web savvy. 1. Hotel Marketing: All hoteliers want to know how to better market and brand themselves. Using social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, & YouTube is great way to connect with potential customers. An example of a useful YouTube video is to make a two-minute video that captures the top 5 reasons your hotel rocks! Make your website locally optimized for search. This is an easy way to connect your hotel to those looking for a hotel in your specific area. Submitting your hotel's address and website on Google Maps and Places will pay dividends for years to come. 2. Customer Service: More and more hotel reservations are booked online. For the convenience of your guests, offer online booking, and make sure your hotel is listed on sites like Expedia, Kayak, and Priceline. Connect your hotel management system to your online booking program and you are able to automatically build an email list for email marketing. 3. Reputation Management: Often times a small fraction of customers who had a bad experience are more likely to write a negative review than the overwhelming majority who had a great experience. This can pose to be a problem for those in hotel and tourism management. 4. Have the right equipment. Hotels need to have the right hotel supplies to be able to maintain their business and daily activities. It is important to have a hotel management software systems, transportation for airport shuttles, the right lecterns and podiums in your conference room, and the right public address systems within the hotel. The Victoria Solid Hardwood Multimedia Lectern from AmpliVox is the perfect addition to any meeting or conference room. The classic style, multimedia functionality, optional built-in sound system, and portability makes the Victoria a favorite among hoteliers and presenters alike. 3. Boundaries. 2. The customer is always right. Always! Listen to complaints and don't just fix them, fix the root problem behind them. Turn the weakness into a strength by using the complaint as an opportunity to improve the way your hotel functions. Do everything you can to turn an upset guest's problem into a good story they will want to share of how you went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure their good experience. 1. Have fun! As a manager, it may seem like you have a never ending list of things to do. Enjoy your guests, enjoy your staff, and enjoy your work.

SHMS Swiss Hotel Management School

04:36
http://shms.com - Swiss Hotel Management School SHMS - When your classroom is a palace, prepare to be amazed! Discover the magic of the student experience at SHMS! What is hospitality?  It is something that comes from the heart, it emanates from the heart. It is difficult to describe but we welcome strangers. Or, when a stranger is welcomed, I think it is immediately felt.   It is amazing how the transformation takes place with the students when they live and breathe and learn hospitality within the environment of a palace and that’s where these qualities of the Swiss-made hotelier really come out. They are born in the environment that they are studying in.   The journey starts in SHMS Caux, which is a beautiful palace built in 1902. Hospitality is changing over time and especially the skills that the industry is looking for in students is evolving with that and as an institution, we really need to make sure that we prepare our students for the 21st century.   So the students learn the more academic sides of classes in the classroom as well as the more practical skills. Our students are organising banquets, they are working in the restaurants, they are working in the kitchens always with this idea that they will be needing these skills to manage others in the future.   What the hotel industry is telling us what they are looking for is students that have been able to transform to the point where they have this empathy, where they understand, they feel other people, and we call that “savoir-faire”. It is a process that really takes some development in them, to where they can empathise with people in front of them, with their employees in the future, with guests in the future and those soft skills are something they learn throughout the journey within our hotel management schools.   Starting in Caux where they are learning by doing in the first few years, they come to Leysin where the management areas start to take effect and they are learning how to make some decisions and reflect on those decisions and the outcomes of them.   Everything that you can imagine you would like to do you can do here in terms of skiing, parapenting, horse riding.   They create their own activities as well within the hotel management school. We have a nightclub, we have restaurants, so the students are quite involved. Plus, we have a big gym and a spa so they can enjoy the services and the activities around, within the campus as well.   There is no greater value for the hotel industry globally to have studied in Switzerland and Swiss Hotel Management School has a reputation and a brand value that is global because of the outcome of our graduates. They are out in the industry, continuing that reputation by being very employable, being leaders of the future. Video credit http://www.superpandaprod.com

We discuss the company's expansion plans, why yoo feels it is the right time to launch a new hotel brand, how the two hotel brands under yoo are different, and what targets the company has in terms of the number of properties in the region and globally within the next few years. Andrew tells us why yoo chose to work with Onyx Hospitality and not one of the many other hotel management companies in the region, and we ask him to tell us more about their yoo2 project in Phuket which is expected to break ground later this year with opening scheduled for end-2020. Andrew also tells us where the second yoo hotel will be in this region, and Steven asks about the only yoo hotel in the world that is currently open and how that property, which is in Brazil and managed by a different management company, will work with future yoo2 hotels in terms of loyalty programmes and the like. We also discuss how the company will name the hotels, and you will learn whether the yoo hotels will be called yoo hotels, or whether they will have their own name but have a subline "managed by yoo hotels" or whether the company has other plans. We discuss all that and much, much more in the FHD video interview. http://www.asiatraveltips.com

Hotel Indigo Brand Development Journey

01:31
Pixel8 recently won an International Hermes Creative Award for our animated Brand Development Journal illustrating the journey we travelled with USA based, global boutique brand Hotel Indigo. Pixel8 were appointed by IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) to refresh the Hotel Indigo brand ahead of major international expansion. We created the animation for IHG’s Atlanta based Director of Global Brand Management, Upscale Brands, Ed Thorne. Ed wanted an atmospheric and bohemian internal presentation about Hotel Indigo’s development that was still completely on-brand. Lasting just 90 seconds, the animation begins with the image of a hand scribbling a Hotel Indigo logo in pencil on a napkin; reflecting the humble beginnings of the brand. The animation then shows Pixel8 flying across the Atlantic to Atlanta, Georgia and embarking on a global journey, stopping off along the way to conduct focus groups, select Pantone references, commission photography and create tone of voice. The animation illustrates just some of the research, analysis and prep work that we carried out for Hotel Indigo.
