13 Most Unusual Houses

08:34
From a house shaped like a toilet to an upside down house, these are 13 of the most shocking homes from around the world! Subscribe for weekly wacky videos and learn interesting facts about the world with awesome top 10 lists and other amazing videos. 8 - House On A Rock – The Drina River in Serbia is where one of the strangest and tiniest houses on our list sits a house perched on a rock. The house is over 40 years old and has weathered the Serbian elements to remain standing. Built in 1969, the house came to be when a group of boys were looking for a place to lay out in the sun and discovered the rock. Realizing it would be a great place to build the structure, the boys constructed the one bedroom house and it’s been there ever since. 7 – Bubble House – Selected to be an historic monument by the French Ministry of Culture even though its not even 40 years old. The house was designed by an organic architect named Antti Lovag and has sprawling views of the Mediterranean Sea. The convex windows and peculiar shape made it truly bizarre. The focal point of the house is the garden at the center that features a waterfall and stream. Exotic vegetation line the garden and the interior is fitted with built in furniture, shelving and cupboards. 6 - upside down house – This Upside Down House looks like a movie set – but it’s not! Located in Poland, the upside down house was created by Daniel Czapiewski – a Polish businessman. The house has become one of the largest tourist attractions in Poland, although tourists have complained of motion sickness and nausea upon entering. The interior of the house is fully furnished and decorated, with everything bolted to the ceiling to keep with its theme. There is a pretty profound message behind the house – Daniel was trying to make a statement about the state of the world, namely the Communist era. The house took longer to build because the workers kept getting disoriented by the upside down design. 5 - Boeing 727 Hotel – Though technically a hotel and not a house, it’s just too cool not to mention. The 1965 Boeing 727 frame used for this hotel was salvaged from San Jose and carefully brought to Costa Rica. The hotel consists of two bedrooms with their own private baths, a kitchenette, dining area, private entrance and ocean view terrace. It’s completed fitted with Costa Rican teak paneling and hand carved teak furniture. From the terrace, the only neighbors visible are the monkeys, toucans and sloths. 4 - Flintstones House – Well, this house may look familiar. TV personality Dick Clark had actually been the one to fight to have this home built. Located in Malibu California, the house is situated on 23 acres and needed to look like a rock formation to blend into the surroundings in order for Dick Clark to get permission to build on the wild site. The home is a one bedroom, two bath, with an interior covered in steel and wood. The huge glass windows offer 360 degree views of the surrounding Santa Monica Mountains. The house was recently sold by Clark’s widow for $1.78 million. 3 - Soccer Ball House – Not only is this soccer ball house located in Japan but it’s also apparently disaster proof. The house has 32 sides and is structurally designed to withstand earthquakes. This house is apparently a hot commodity and is popping up all over Japan, ranging in size from large all the way down to doghouses. The interior consists of one small room with a fireplace in the middle. The neat thing about this home is you can combine several units together to create a number of configurations. 2 - The Keret House – Not only is this structure a house, it’s also an art installation. Designed by the architect Jakub Szczesny in 2012, the Keret House measures just around 3 feet by 5 feet. It consists of two floors and has a kitchen one bedroom, a living area and bathroom. To get from the first floor to the second floor, the residents have to climb a ladder. To enter the house you’d need to use retractable stairs that turn into the living space when closed. Located in Warsaw, the Keret House was built between two buildings and the designer considers it a tribute to his family were killed during World War II. 1 - toilet shaped house – The question isn’t does it exist.. The question is WHY does it exist? And there’s actually a very interesting answer to that question. Built by the late mayor of Suwon South Korea, Sim Jae-Duck the purpose was to bring awareness to clean and working sanitation. He was born in a bathroom and has made it his mission in life to be an advocate for the 2 billion people in this world living without toilets. The house is 4520 square feet of concrete, steel and glass and cost $1.1 million to build. The focal point of the house is an obvious one – it’s a glass walled bathroom in which the walls become opaque when a button is pushed.

It has been ranked as the least affordable housing market on Earth for eight years in a row, and the price per square foot seems to be only going up. The inflated prices are forcing Hongkongers to squeeze into unconventionally small spaces that can affect their quality of life. Tens of thousands of Hongkongers are living in spaces that range from 75 to 140 square feet. To put that in perspective, the average parking space in the US is about 150 square feet. And in the most extreme cases, Hongkongers have resorted to homes the size of a coffin. I spent some time exploring the living situation in Hong Kong to find out why housing has become so expensive and spaces so tight. To understand how Hong Kong’s housing market turned out this way and see how it’s affecting people’s lives, watch the final episode of Borders Hong Kong. Treehouses and Skate Parks - What’s cooler than being able to bring the skateboard park home with you? That’s the impetus behind Tokyo based design studio LEVEL who installed a small skate park.Waterfalls - They're possibly one of the most mesmerising and relaxing things to look at and hear, so why not put a waterfall into your house. Slides - Walking up and down stairs takes time and ask yourself, would you rather walk down stairs or slit on your bum and slide down the same distance? I rest my case. Glass Floors and Walls - Glass tends to be a staple material for office buildings, so why not as a residential option? More and more people seem to have picked up on the amazing potential of working with glass. Underground Parking - Taking their cue from James Bonds movies, a number of companies, including a Swiss-based design firm out of Geneva, have managed to bring vertical parking into reality. Moss/Rock Walls - What better way to spice up your home and make it feel like your own than to upgrade its environmental impact? Pet Transit Systems - If you’re wrinkling your brow at this one, don’t worry – so did we at first. Musical Walls - Known as the Court of Water, this funky Dresden art installation slash building design is the product of eclectic architect and artist Heike Bottcher who built the blue Rube Goldberg-esque wall in 1999 for the Kunsthof Passage farm collective. Hidden Rooms - If you were anything like me growing up, you lamented the fact that your house didn’t have a secret room that could only be accessed through a hidden door in the form of a bookcase. 3D Epoxy Floors - There are a whole bunch of options to choose from when it comes to flooring for your home – from wood and tile to laminate and even rubber, the list goes on and on.

Tokyo Capsule Hotel Experience ★ ONLY in JAPAN

12:28
A real life capsule to sleep in. Cool! This is one of the most "ONLY in JAPAN" experiences possible — staying in a capsule hotel in a Japanese city. It’s cheap and convenient but why do people actually stay here? Is it ... you know ... big enough? In this episode, John Daub and Masahito Kawahata head to the Shinjuku Kuyakusho-mae Capsule Hotel in Kabukicho to find out. Japan’s Capsule Hotels are more than cheap places to crash. This type of hotel is distinctively Japanese in style, cramming in as much as possible into a tiny space to make a comfortable experience, but can a guest really be comfortable in one? More and more foreign tourists to Japan want to give it a try! How small are these capsule? How much is a night? What are the rules? Is it worth it? Miss your last train? Work too late? Argument with your husband or wife and need a place to crash? Those might be the normal reasons why Japanese salarymen spend the night at a capsule hotel. For foreign tourists it’s a chance to experience a unique style of hotel that seems more like spending a night at the morgue. Before you pass judgement on capsule hotels, some things about them may surprise you! What can you find at the capsule hotel? Here’s a list: Capsules Lockers Restaurant (Open 18:00~24:00) Community Room Vending machines Laundry machines Fast and free WIFI English speaking staff Women’s only floor Japanese-style bath and sauna Close to Shinjuku Station, bars, Golden Gai and Robot Restaurant URL: http://capsuleinn.com/shinjuku/en/ Google Map: https://goo.gl/maps/j1Ll3 Thank you PIRATES OF TOKYO BAY for the support! Shipping containers recycled into affordable, accessible Utah home

12:46
Real estate broker Jeff White dreamed of transforming used shipping containers into affordable housing. Laughed at by the first architects he approached, he began to work on his concept using a 40-foot-long, 9-foot-6-inches-tall and 8-foot-wide container in the driveway of his Salt Lake City (Utah) home. Being "busted" by a city inspector became the needed publicity for his project and soon after the Salt Lake's mayor was behind him and helped to ease the permits and inspections process. After two years of transformation (including plans, groundwork and permits), what began as two forty-foot high cube containers is now a light and airy 672-square-foot house. It's not dirt cheap- the Sarah House (named for a San Francisco homeless woman whose makeshift home inspired White) is currently on the market for $135,000 (and only to low-income buyers)-, but that price includes a lot of hidden costs. "I spent 40 thousand dollars for the lot and then the infrastructure underneath it, getting the sewer, water lines, probably an additional 25 thousand dollars. So you can see where I'm at, the house is still coming in at 55 to 60 thousand dollars." White thinks with time and economies of scale, he can bring the costs down. Tokyo's impermanent skinny house made to age well with owners

12:24
Inheritance taxes on land in Japan means plots often get smaller as they are passed on. This “divide and sell” phenomenon in Tokyo translates into some very tiny home sites. When architects Masahiro and Mao Harada were tasked with creating a home on a lot only 2 meters (6.5 feet) wide at its narrowest point, they chose to interpret small as “near” and use the small scale to their advantage. On the narrowest portion of the lot, along the street, they created a “gatehouse”: used as both an entryway and offices for the clients. The lower level is a gallery for the wife’s art, which is mostly, appropriately, very tiny objects. The second floor, accessible only by a small, wooden ladder, houses the husband’s office with walls lined with books and movies (he directs commercial). Everything in the Gatehouse is within touching distance, and this is important, and a positive thing. Masahiro calls this type of design “peach skin”. “The nearness between the materials and my eye make clear the very small grains, like a peach skin, so the resolution is richer. When you see big things from a distance you can miss details.” Behind the Gatehouse, the lot opens up a bit to accommodate the rest of the home. To comply with building codes limiting home height, the Haradas chose to build the home a few feet underground. Again, they chose to see this as an advantage, allowing for a partly submerged bedroom and bathroom, that allow one to feel “like an animal” while having a bath in the ground or “like an insect” when lying on the bed, at eye level with the plants. After the small, intimate room downstairs the completely open, and high-ceilinged, upstairs feels large. Here one wall is dedicated to a kitchen (partly camouflaged behind tan doors and cabinets) and the other to a full-wall bookshelf which is also structural. Masahiro explains the benefits of using vertical shelf supports that are narrow and very close to each other: the material is cheap; it can be brought in by hand; and it can be created without heavy equipment and instead, by skilled craftspeople. For the interior finish on both the walls and the floors, they used MDF (medium-density fiberboard) both because it is very affordable, but also because it resembles the paper walls in traditional Japanese homes. “Here we use paper and wooden materials and everything can return to the earth, so the time scale is near, or small,” explains Masahiro. “We are always thinking about scale. Scale isn’t just big or small. Scale is also time. This building has a permanent quality, but it also feels ephemeral. This house lives with people, and dies with people, and that’s a good thing.” Mount Fuji Architects: http://fuji-studio.jp/ Original story: https://faircompanies.com/videos/tokyos-impermanent-skinny-house-made-to-age-well-with-owners/

Lego-style apartment transforms into infinite spaces

Christian's hotel inspired by LEGO flat: https://youtu.be/MvJfN9jTS5s When Christian Schallert isn't cooking, dressing, sleeping or eating, his 24 square meter (258 square feet) apartment looks like an empty cube. To use a piece of furniture, he has to build it. Located in Barcelona's hip Born district, the tiny apartment is a remodeled pigeon loft. Designed by architect Barbara Appolloni, Christian says the space was inspired by the space-saving furniture aboard boats, as well as the clean lines of a small Japanese home. Christian sold his apartment and has reinvested his money and small space design ideas in opening a small hotel in Barcelona: www.hotelbrummell.com Christian Schallert, photographer: www.instagram.com/christianschallert Spanish-version tour with architect Barbara Appolloni: http://faircompanies.com/videos/view/un-mini-apartamento-que-se-transforma-en-infinitos-espacios/ Architect Barbara Appolloni: http://www.barbaraappolloni.com/works_christianHouse.html Original story here: http://faircompanies.com/videos/view/lego-style-apartment-transforms-into-infinite-spaces/

LA coliving: PodShare's permeable intersection between social/privacy

29:37
Calling it “a social network with an address”, Los Angeles entrepreneur Elvina Beck created PodShare, a coliving experiment where dozens of “Podestrians”- travelers, mobile workers or new arrivals to the city- share a communal space filled with sleeping pods or “bunk beds for adults”. Beck, who built the first PodShare in 2012 with her father, wanted to respond to her demographic’s rejection of widespread home ownership and embrace of the sharing economy. She set out to transform the American bunk bed, creating a more open (and co-ed) version of the Japanese capsule hotels. For $40 to $50 per night (or discounted weekly and monthly prices), Podestrians can choose a bottom or top sleeping pod (equipped with a lamp and a small flatscreen television with Internet access) along with all the shared spaces, including a kitchen (with communal food, and space for individual storage in the pantry and fridge), bathroom, showers (toiletries included) and a communal lounge. Currently, there are 3 locations in Los Angeles, but Beck sees the model as scalable across the country and, similar to a gym, members could have overnight access at any location. PodShare doesn’t own any of the locations, but instead rents empty space from landlords. They stay away from residentially-zoned properties and instead focus on converting commercial or live/work spaces. Beck and her partner Kera Package have evolved the pods so they are now modular and totally mobile so they can go up and down at any location when a lease ends. In reflection of the sharing economy’s privilege of “access” over “ownership”, Beck tries to outfit each location with extras like bicycles and instruments. She hopes each location will eventually have bigger extras, like a gym or pool. Currently, the Hollywood location even has a recording studio and editing bay. Transcript We wanted a place that was, you know, much more just homey and had more soul to it. When we were looking around town, we stumbled upon this place. And it's in a neighborhood that we really love, and we just felt like this was a great place for us to move in to. This apartment just kind of embodies everything that I love. Obviously I love dark and rustic but still very clean and very chic. It just feels like our place in LA as well but in New York. So we worked with Don Stewart again on this house. He designed our house in LA as well. And we love working with Don. We duplicated this wooden wall behind us and put it in the bedroom as well because originally it was just a clean white bedroom. We built a whole new bathroom, and got rid of another massive bathroom that was on the other side of the apartment. Oh yeah, I made the big bath, it's now John's closet so he has to walk from the shower back to his, but it's a big closet though so you are very lucky there. This is my favorite. No, I love it, I love seeing it when I walk in. It adds a little whimsical vibe. Yeah. And our dogs are in love, especially Putty. Putty makes love to it on often occasion. Oh my goodness, wow. I think the best things about this apartment is this beautiful unique kitchen. In the original version of this apartment, didn't really fit this aesthetic as well. Yeah, it was too modern. It was too clean, it was white. It just didn't feel like it fit everything else that was happening. So we made it fit and Don designed this amazing set of cabinets. And that's one of the best things about this apartment, just this beautiful unique kitchen. For me the kitchen is really important. It's the first thing I think about when we find a beautiful apartment like this. It's a place I'm going to be most of the time. I want it to be perfect for me. So Don did a wonderful job designing it. Obviously we love an open space. I'm a big TV fan. I want to be able to cook, drink wine, watch TV at the same time. So we made sure it was nice and open. This island is just gorgeous and I love the bar stools and of course the backsplash is gorgeous too. She makes pretty much everything well. She's really good at everything savory. I think I'm kind of notorious for cooking really low and slow meals. I love things that take four or five hours. We had to have two ovens. That all had to do with the holidays. For Thanksgiving we had over people and I made side dishes. Yeah, so we needed multiple ovens. We needed a lot of... It's actually illegal I think for us to have this much power usage with these two ovens. We live on the edge. We live on the edge, we're crazy. But I think we're violating some kind of code. Shhh. I'm the sous-chef, I do chopping. And taking out the trash. Every once in a while though he does want to cook for me, but it's hard for me to just sit on the couch. She won't watch me, she won't let me just cook. It's frustrating to watch. I can make a mean fried chicken though. Yes, he's in charge of the fried chicken and the macaroni and cheese. Those are his specialties. Tour The Help Director Tate Taylor’s Mississippi Mansion | Celebrity Homes | Architectural Digest

03:26
As a boy, Tate Taylor dreamed of living in an antebellum house. The actor/writer/director grew up in Mississippi but left home in 1996 to pursue his career, first in New York and then in Hollywood. But when he returned in 2010 to film The Help—the Oscar-winning movie based on the novel by his childhood friend Kathryn Stockett—the dream “came back with a vengeance.” A columned house used in the movie was for sale but Taylor took a pass because it had little land. “I wanted to be in the middle of nowhere,” he says. After a months-long search that led him through much of the Deep South, he circled back and found the perfect place in Church Hill, a tiny community just north of Natchez: Wyolah Plantation, a 100-acre spread with a three-story Greek Revival dwelling, constructed in 1836, and eight outbuildings. It almost didn’t happen. Wyolah’s then-owner, a Brooklyn doctor, bought the estate in 1976 with the idea of reviving it and retiring there with his wife. Even though he never embarked on the restoration, he couldn’t bear to let the place go. The house was on the market for decades, with potential buyers always turned away. Undaunted, Taylor “flew up and told him my intentions,” the filmmaker explains. It worked—the man, Taylor remembers, got “teary-eyed” when he saw that his own plans could be carried out by someone else. Designer Shawn Henderson and restoration consultant Thomas E. Goodman renovated Wyolah, the 1830s Mississippi plantation home of The Help director Tate Taylor and film producer John Norris. A painstaking three-year renovation added 11 new baths. Raw attic space was converted to a full third floor with four bedrooms en-suite and a small kitchen and laundry room. The second floor got kitchen and laundry facilities as well. The summer kitchen is now a one-bedroom guesthouse, as is the charming columned office that was built by Wyolah’s first owner, a physician. The old commissary, connected to the main house by a breezeway, became the primary kitchen. The home’s original faux-marble mantels and faux-grained doors, which had all been painted over, were restored. Dining room walls were brushed with a romantic mural of local flora and fauna by Don Jacobs, a Mississippi artist who created similar scenes for the governor’s mansion in Jackson, the state capital. To help with Wyolah’s decor, Taylor called on his friend Shawn Henderson, a Manhattan-based designer whose ardently contemporary taste admittedly contrasts with Taylor’s admiration for all things antique. For example, Henderson says he swallowed hard when Taylor brought a 19th-century heirloom settee to his attention, but soon the family treasure was upholstered in sleek brick-red leather and placed beneath a guest room window, opposite a German botanical chart depicting huge mushrooms. For his part, Henderson reports that his greatest challenge was trying to reflect his client’s personality. The center of Wyolah’s action is the elegantly proportioned music room, where friends come to play the resident piano and guitars (Taylor calls himself an enthusiastic “fake singer”) before continuing their revelries around a bonfire. Mick Jagger, a producer of Taylor’s James Brown biopic, Get On Up, has stayed over, as has Academy Award-winning actress Octavia Spencer, who starred in both The Help and Get On Up. Though Taylor has a place in Los Angeles and keeps an apartment in Manhattan’s East Village, he considers Wyolah his primary residence—and he has turned it into something of a filmmaking mecca. Recently he bought the plantation house next door and made it into a postproduction facility, while Wyolah hosts everything from visiting executives to workshops for aspiring filmmakers. Before he began work on his latest project an adaptation of Paula Hawkins’s thriller The Girl on the Train—Taylor had DreamWorks Studios executives and the film’s director of photography as guests at the home for several days, he says, and “we planned the whole movie.” Read more here --> https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/tate-taylor-help-director-renovates-mississippi-mansion Still haven’t subscribed to Architectural Digest on YouTube? ►► http://bit.ly/2zl7s34 ABOUT ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST The leading international design authority, Architectural Digest features articles and videos of the best in architecture, style, culture, travel, and shopping. Old Railway Carriage Converted Into Stunning Off-Grid Home

15:54
These two derelict old railway carriages have been converted into an absolutely stunning off the grid home. Packed full of character and history from their time on the railway, these carriages are now a wonderful place to call home. Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/livingbig Located in the Central Otago region in the South Island of New Zealand, this conversion project has been a true labour of love. The restoration and renovation took 8 years to get the home to it's current state working part time. https://www.livingbiginatinyhouse.com/railway-carriage-home-conversion/ Being located on such a remote property, the home is unable to connect to services and so is completely off the grid, capturing it's own rain water and generating it's power from a small solar system. Apple architect picks a small prefab to savor CA countryside

34:50
When BJ and Danielle Siegel began planning their dream home in the hills of Sonoma County, California, they wanted something light on the land. “Sometimes when people build a house they want to express all the cool things they can get into a house and for us it was kind of the opposite,” explains BJ. “We wanted to do as little as possible and make it a comfortable place to live.” BJ, an architect who’s also head of store design for Apple, didn’t have time to babysit a build, but he was enamored by the customizable prefab design weeHouse. Created by Geoffrey Warner of St. Paul Minnesota’s Alchemy Architects, the ultra minimal design is based on a simple box with two walls of sheer windows so the landscape takes center stage. “I think a lot of people don't necessarily buy into the idea of less is more. I think a lot of people think more is more. And they add features and they add complexity and they add size and it makes them feel like they've actually gotten more and I think it's much more difficult and much harder to actually get there through doing less. That's the fun challenge.” The Siegels also realized that in the pricey San Francisco Bay Area, modular builds that could be nearly finished in a factory, were a lot cheaper and easier to construct than site-built homes. In order to create enough space for themselves and their teenage son Jules, the Siegels opted for two boxes placed at an angle from each other (to create privacy). The larger box houses the kitchen (on one wall), open dining room and a box for Jules’ bedroom (with the bathroom and shower tucked behind it). The other box is BJ and Danielle’s bedroom and bath with again a box unit in the middle that houses their closet and separates the space. “I always feel like really great architecture is like a really great poem. You have to work it work it work it, you reduce it down to the things that only say what they have to say and you get rid of everything else and that's where the sweet spot is for me.” https://www.weehouse.com/ Landscape architect David Hocker: https://www.hockerdesign.com/ https://faircompanies.com/videos/apple-architect-picks-a-small-prefab-to-savor-ca-countryside/

Inside Kourtney Kardashian's Home, A House Tour of Her Decor | Architectural Digest

Architectural Digest takes you on a tour of three stunning rooms in Kourtney Kardashian's home: the entryway, and the living room. While interior designer Martin Lawrence Bullard describes the home decor and interior design elements, Kourtney dives into the more personal side of her home tour. When Kourtney Kardashian purchased an 11,500-square-foot mansion in Calabasas, California, from former NFL star Keyshawn Johnson, she enlisted Million Dollar Decorators’ Martyn Lawrence Bullard to transform the Tuscan-style dwelling into a contemporary retreat more suited to the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star’s minimalist aesthetic. From the Pierre Jeanneret seating that surrounds the dining table to the living room’s museum-quality Oscar Niemeyer chair and ottoman to the Jules Leleu desk that anchors her art-filled office, the home brims with modernist gems. In the entryway, Kardashian has a vintage mirror, light fixture, a custom-made table, and stools on a limestone floor. In the kitchen, the "Keeping Up with the Kardashians" sister has a stainless steel sink, refrigerator, range and oven, glass cabinet, coffee machine with clock, tea kettle, porcelain bowl, maple cutting boards, glass pendant lights, Italian flatware, glass cake stand, three-tier serving tray, a limestone floor and a lot of black and white photographs. In the living room, Kourtney has wool sofas and silver fox throw pillows, leather chairs, ring chandelier, vintage lamps, a diamond skull, fireplace, potted plant, pool table, her childhood Yamaha piano, sconces, game boxes, and a lot of books.
