Shakespeare's Sonnets: Crash Course Literature 304

12:27
This week, we're learning about sonnets, and English Literature's best-known purveyor of those fourteen-line paeans, William Shakespeare. We'll look at a few of Willy Shakes's biggest hits, including Sonnet 18, "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day," Sonnet 116, "Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediment," and Sonnet 130, "My mistresses's eyes are nothing like the sun." We'll talk about what makes a sonnet, a little bit about their history, and even a little bit about how reading poetry helps us understand how to be human beings.

What Shakespeare's English Sounded Like - and how we know

06:34
Botched rhymes, buried puns and a staged accent that sounds more Victorian than Elizabethan. No more! Use linguistic sleuthing to dig up the surprisingly different sound of the bard's Early Modern English. Subscribe for language: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=NativLang Be my patron: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=584038 ~ Briefly, and without spoilers ~ I'm embarrassed to admit that this is the first time I ever really got into Shakespeare. There's a personal story here, which I'll quickly share in the video. The idea of reconstructing his pronunciation intrigued me. As I started making trips to the library and downloading old grammars, I just found the questions piling on. I did find some answers for you. It starts with his odd spelling - well, the spelling he inherited. Chaucer's medieval spelling was followed by modern sound changes, including the start of the Great Vowel Shift. The introduction of Caxton's printing press and the spelling debates put Early Modern English in a state of flux by Shakespeare's time. They also left our first trail of evidence. Other evidence comes from rhythm, rhymes and - more reluctantly - puns. Many of these don't work the same way anymore, from the rhymes like "sea" and "prey" to the rhythm of "housewifery". Modern dialects add another layer of evidence, at times preserving features that standard English accents, notably RP, have lost. The sound of his language is also shaped by his grammar. His use of "thou" and his third-person "-th" vs "-s" verb endings always stand out to English speakers. Finally, though data-crunchers challenge his legendary status as king of all the words, we consider how innovative he was in the way he used words. We end with a note on linguist David Crystal's Original Pronunciation ("OP") experiment at the reconstructed Globe Theatre, and some thoughts on what studying Shakespeare's sounds as a different pronunciation system says about him and about us. ~ Credits ~ Narration, art and animation by Josh from NativLang. Hip-Hop & Shakespeare? Akala at TEDxAldeburgh

20:24
Akala demonstrates and explores the connections between Shakespeare and Hip-Hop, and the wider cultural debate around language and it's power. MOBO award-winning hip hop artist 'Akala' is a label owner and social entrepreneur who fuses rap/rock/electro-punk with fierce lyrical storytelling (think Wu-Tang Clan and Aphex Twin meets Rage Against The Machine). With Akala's latest record, convention-defying album DoubleThink, Akala has proven himself as one of the most dynamic and literate talents in the UK. Inspired by the likes of Saul Williams and Gil Scott Heron, Akala has also developed a reputation for stellar live performances with his drummer Cassell 'TheBeatmaker' headlining 5 UK tours and touring with everyone from Jay-Z, Nas & Damian Marley, M.I.A. and Christina Aguilera to Siouxsie Sue and Richard Ashcroft, appearing at numerous UK / European and US festivals (Glastonbury, Big Chill, Wireless, V, Hove and SXSW) also partnering with the British Council promoting British arts across Africa, Vietnam (the first rapper to perform a live concert in Vietnam), New Zealand and Australia. In 2009, Akala launched the 'The Hip-hop Shakespeare Company', a hotly-tipped music theatre production enterprise which has sparked worldwide media interest since its inception. Previous collaborators include: British actor; Sir Ian McKellen, actor/musician; Colin Salmon and Royal Shakespeare Company Voice Director; Cicely Berry. 2011 sees the launch Akala's latest endeavour 'Illa State Productions' to garner his budding scriptwriting talent alongside TV presenting and as a music composer for various TV and Film projects. Shakespeare Summarized: The Taming Of The Shrew

09:29
EDIT: Sorry, everybody, looks like UMG doesn't like me using their music. I had to remove the ending song, which dropped the audio quality a little in the final few seconds. For full effect, play Kiss With A Fist over the ending audio. I returned to my old style to do this one, in order to maintain stylistic continuity for the Shakespeare run of videos, so sorry if you were anticipating adorable chibi versions of Katharina and Petruchio - you'll have to make do with the boring, fleshy versions. On the plus side, this took me roughly two days, as opposed to the four-to-six-weeks the animated videos take, so at least it's faster! Next in the lineup is Paradise Lost, which WILL be chibi'd. I *really* don't like this play. REALLY really.

Written in Shakespeare sonnet style. Romantic love poem with music. Sonnet I by PaulaJedi My dear you are so far but I do find Among this wretched world I lay unrest'd And nothing in my heart can ease my mind As sleeplessly these nights I do detest. Inside my head pictures of you do bleed. The heart within my chest pounds deathly on. It's you inside my arms that I do need Before my hopes burn ashes in the sun. You are my closest love, you are my fire. Your presence is what I truly desire. Royalty free music from www.looperman.com

"Shakespeare Is Life" (Ft.TheRealGmoney) - Official Music Video

06:21
Hi guys!!! It's Luka and TheRealGmoney here with our first music video and rap together! We put so much hard work and dedication into both the music video and the rap. The rap is about the play, "Romeo and Juliet", featuring three different special pieces of music from the YouTube Audio Library! The rap in total, consists of over nine-hundred and fifty words! This means we both rap over one-hundred fifty-eight words per minute! There is so much information in this music video and we are happy to say this video is family-friendly(no curses)! This video was made for fun specifically for our English Class to enjoy, but if you have the time, make sure to definitely watch our Shakespeare Rap and maybe you could even learn a thing or two about Shakespeare's personal life, the play, or the characters in the play! We made sure to put as many vocab words and facts from just the beginning acts as possible as well. We made this video while we were reaching the halfway point in the play, so there is some stuff missing, but we wouldn't want to spoil the entire book for you guys anyway! We really hope you enjoy our music video, and of course, our rap! (We both put some comic relief into this music video(similar to what Shakespeare did in "Romeo and Juliet"). Can you guess what is it? Also, we did not use auto-tune at all for out music video! And listening with headphones is strongly suggested.) We hope you love our video, "Shakespeare Is Life". This video and the audio took super duper long to make, and yes there are mistakes here and there, but we will continue to keep getting better! This was our Shakespeare Rap!!! Hope you enjoyed!!! Part of Lyrics : (See Bottom)                     "Shakespeare is Life" (Turn Up Burnup) Luka : “English is a class, which you can easily pass, so don’t give me that sass, just because you are an underclass! Hither is here, wherefore is why, everybody knows Shakespeare is a good guy! Romeo and Juliet is such a good play, it even inspires you to have a good day.” TheRealGmoney : “The term whence is just common sense, its meaning is from where, like hoping a fence. You need to get on my level, you’re envious, you need to stop being so involved in the trendiness! Juliet is all, about that real life, but later all she wants to do is become Romeo’s wife! ... Romeo is a guy with a simple mind, but he walks through life as though he is blind! Both fall in love through the exchange of some words, and both take their lives for being love birds! Romeo’s original love was Rosaline, but when he saw Juliet, it was only a matter of time! I’m out here rapping all up in the wilderness, if you don’t believe me well listen to this cleverness! The lessons that you can learn are just not excusable, if you don’t listen, you could be invited to your funeral. Luka : “Shakespeare is very clever with every verse, but his style makes it extremely hard to traverse. If you have ever read one, of his own plays, you would think Shakespeare needs a very big raise! Like being clever, is just not enough, Shakespeare goes the extra mile and makes Tybalt act all tough! The play features, five acts with many scenes each, you better start writing facts and prepare a speech! Shakespeare, throughout his life, has written many plays, he should be well-known for and read these days!”(Beat Change) - Lafayette : Luka : “Shakespeare is life, his plays end your strife, Reading is fun, some words are puns, You better run, since you are not my son, these lyrics are fire, we got no wire! I got my rapier, The neighbors have it crazier! I showed you my chide, so you cried, I might of lied, about your pride, this ride has sides, so take a big stride! My friend shows so much rancor, he might as well just be an anchor!”…This is the place to be happy, not the neighborhood to be snappy! There are many motifs, some are brief, some have grief, Some even have crazy beliefs! This is a rap not about an app, if we ain’t plotting maps,we just might as well take a nap! Before you snap and begin to tap,let me give you some advice on how to yap!” (Turn up Burn up) Full Lyrics : https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Y66X8S2h1B7Gbt1c0L6HDvI6JRtaR7U3-QTAI5y3Gis/edit?usp=drivesdk The audio is now published on Sound Cloud, as "Shakespeare Is Life"! Let me not to the marriage of true minds - William Shakespeare - Poem - Animation

01:11
Here's a virtual movie of the great William Shakespeare reading his sonnet 116 "Let me not to the marriage of true minds". You can see the amazing 78rpm Shellac record circa 1932 of John Gielgud reading this wonderful sonnet here at this link... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wrj3rilcTnk Shakespeare's sonnet 116 was first published in 1609. Its structure and form are a typical example of the Shakespearean sonnet. The poet begins by stating he should not stand in the way of "the marriage of true minds", and that love cannot be true if it changes for any reason; true love should be constant, through any difficulties. In the seventh line, the poet makes a nautical reference, alluding to love being much like the north star is to sailors. Love also should not fade with time; instead, true love is, as is the polar star, "ever-fixèd" and lasts forever. Sonnet 116 is one of Shakespeare's most famous love sonnets, but some scholars have argued the theme has been misunderstood. Hilton Landry believes the appreciation of 116 as a celebration of true love is mistaken,[3] in part because its context in the sequence of adjacent sonnets is not properly considered. Landry acknowledges the sonnet "has the grandeur of generality or a 'universal significance'," but cautions that "however timeless and universal its implications may be, we must never forget that Sonnet 116 has a restricted or particular range of meaning simply because it does not stand alone."[4] Carol Thomas Neely writes that, "Sonnet 116 is part of a sequence which is separate from all the other sonnets of Shakespeare because of their sense of detachment. They aren’t about the action of love and the object of that love is removed in this sequence which consists of Sonnets 94, 116, and 129".[5] This group of three sonnets does not fit the mold of the rest of Shakespeare’s sonnets, therefore, and they defy the typical concept and give a different perspective of what love is and how it is portrayed or experienced. "Though 116 resolves no issues, the poet in this part of the sequence acknowledges and accepts the fallibility of his love more fully than he could acknowledge that of the young man’s earlier".[6] Other critics of Sonnet 116[7] have argued that one cannot rely on the context of the sonnet to understand its tone. They argue that since "there is no indisputably authoritative sequence to them, we cannot make use of context as positive evidence for one kind of tone or another."[8] Shakespeare does not attempt to come to any significant conclusion within this particular sonnet because no resolution is needed. 8 Ways Hamilton is Basically a Shakespeare Play

09:46
I love Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda and William Shakespeare's plays. Because I know both so well, I started to see similarities between them. They have more in common than many people would think! Here are 8 ways that Hamilton: An American Musical is like a Shakespeare play. 1. They use historical figures and sources. 2. They're culturally surprising! 3. They have mass appeal. 4. They use different styles for different characters. 5. They have freaking huge vocabularies. 6. They have similar themes. 7. They have morally ambiguous characters. 8. Epic insults! Shakespeare Sonnet 32, If thou survive my well-contented day

01:08
For original Shakespeare sonnet 32 text and its modern translation, see below. For complete list of Sonnets see: https://goo.gl/2pLE3c For Shakespeare sonnet 32 analysis check: http://shakespearequotesandplays.com/shakespeare-sonnets/shakespeare-sonnet-32/ ORIGINAL TEXT If thou survive my well-contented day, When that churl death my bones with dust shall cover, And shalt by fortune once more re-survey These poor rude lines of thy deceasèd lover, Compare them with the bett'ring of the time, And though they be outstripped by every pen, Reserve them for my love, not for their rhyme, Exceeded by the height of happier men. O then vouchsafe me but this loving thought: “Had my friend’s muse grown with this growing age, A dearer birth than this his love had brought To march in ranks of better equipage. But since he died and poets better prove, Theirs for their style I’ll read, his for his love.” ______________________________________________________________ MODERN TEXT (Translation in simple English) If you survive me, living on after dust covers my bones, and you should happen to read over again these poor, crude sonnets written by the man who once loved you, remember that things have improved since my day. So even though any poet today could write better sonnets, keep my poems for the sake of my love, not for my skill, which luckier men have far surpassed. And grant me this loving thought: “If my friend’s inspiration was paired with the advantages today’s poets have, his love would have brought forth better poems than these, to rank alongside those of today’s better poets. But since he died, and poets are better now, I’ll read their poems for their style, his for his love.”

1732. Two Sonnets (William Shakespeare)

04:17
I have set two of my favourite Shakespearean sonnets to music. Sonnet 130 is a parody of the conventional love sonnet of Elizabethan times. The style originated in ancient Greece and Rome, particularly in the sonnets of Petrach. It was usual to praise the beauty of the lover by comparing her to stars in the night sky, the light of sun, or red roses. Sir Philip Sidney did much to popularise the style in England, especially in his epic poem Astrophel and Stella. Shakespeare takes the typical metaphors of such poetry and makes fun of them. For example, in Sidney's works the lover's features are favourably compared to pearls, diamonds, etc, but Shakespeare admits that his lover's beauty does not come up to this unrealistic standard. However, he concludes by saying he loves her anyway and that she doesn't need all these fake comparisons to be worthy of his love. Notes: dun (3): a dull brownish gray. black wires (4): compares hair to the finely-spun gold threads woven into fancy hair nets in Elizabethan times. roses damasked, red and white (5): This may be an allusion to the York and Lancaster variety of rose, which the House of Tudor adopted as its symbol after the War of the Roses. It is red and white streaked (damasked), symbolising the union of the Red Rose of Lancaster and the White Rose of York. than the breath that from my mistress reeks (8): an admission that his love, being only human, sometimes has bad breath. rare (13): special. belied (14): misrepresented. with false compare (14): with unrealistic, ridiculous comparisons. Sonnet 18 is the best known of all Shakespeare's 154 sonnets. In some ways it uses the opposite technique to Sonnet 130. His love is superior to a summer's day, because summer can bring rough winds, the sun can be too hot or hidden by clouds and will soon fade and die, whereas his love is immortal. The reason for this is that she (or he) will live forever in this poem, so Shakespeare is really praising the power of his own poetry rather than something inherent in the human subject of his verse. Notes: temperate (1): even-tempered, not overcome by passion. the eye of heaven (5): the sun. every fair from fair sometime declines (7): all beauty will eventually fade. nature's changing course (8): the natural changes due to aging. that fair thou ow'st (10): that beauty you possess. (The word "owe" meant "own" in Shakespeare's time.) in eternal lines to time thou grow'st (12): A grafting metaphor. The technique of joining parts from two plants with cords so that they grow as one is compared to the beloved becoming immortal, by being grafted to time with the poet's cords ("eternal lines"). The words of the sonnets and the chords I use to sing them can be found here: http://www.raymondfolk.com/page/Shakespeare+Sonnets For lyrics and chords of all my songs, please see my website: http://raymondfolk.wikifoundry.com

Brewing A Tudor Ale (Shakespeare Period Ale) With Joe! Also, updates, and discussions!

36:40
Please consider helping support my videos directly through small contributions through Patreon at: https://www.patreon.com/terpsichoreankid In this video, we're brewing up a Tudor style ale (i.e. an ancient English style ale that uses very little hops, but instead uses sage for an herbal addition to the kings ale), as well as we're talking about how a two vessel RIMS system works, a little bit about the style of beer this is, and of some upcoming updates for the channels as well as the overall commentary on the ancient hop-less beer we're brewing up. Not going to lie, this is a very different style of brewing for me, as it uses very little hops. The sage offsets the sweetness of the wort, and the overall smell of it is something you would expect from a Sunday roast, not from a home brewed beer. It's going to be awesome! Thanks for watching, and as always please like, comment, subscribe, and share with your friends! Love you all, and will talk with you soon! Cheers! And 17! ~Joe

Who Was the REAL William Shakespeare? The 17th Earl of Oxford? Insights from Katherine Chiljan

Insights from Katherine Chiljan SUBSCRIBE, LIKE & COMMENT: After you subscribe, go to “Manage subscriptions” (bottom of left sidebar), then check the box, “Send me updates” so that you’ll be notified when new videos are posted. http://www.FarOutRadio.com http://www. ShakespeareSuppressed.com https://www.facebook.com/FarOutRadio https://twitter.com/faroutradio Katherine Chiljan is our guest for this program and we talked about her book, “Shakespeare Suppressed: The Uncensored Truth About Shakespeare and His Works” When you were in high school English class, I’m sure you read and studied the plays and sonnets of William Shakespeare. And I’ll bet you didn’t like them. But I’ll also bet that you have probably seen several TV and film productions of William Shakespeare’s plays, or adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays. “Officially” William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564 – 351 years ago this Thursday!) and he died on April 23, 1616. (Imagine that, dying on your birthday!) According to Wikipedia, the first known film production of a Shakespearean play was the 1900 French version of Hamlet, starring Sarah Bernhard as Hamlet. This was not a silent film; it is cited as one of the first examples of sound and moving image-syncing, created with the new phono-cinema-theatre system. Since then there have been at least 410 feature-length film and TV adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays. Some follow the original storyline and text, others use only the storyline and plots. Some are portrayed in the style of Shakespeare’s time, others in contemporary times, and even one in the wild west! And then if you add in stage productions around the world you’re talking probably 10’s of thousands of productions. William Shakespeare’s impact is almost immeasurable! So for an individual that looms so tall and casts such a long, long shadow, you would think that his life was thoroughly documented. Well, there IS a accounting of his life as a playwright, poet, actor, and a family man - born in Stratford-upon-Avon, but the story simply doesn’t add up. This is more than just a literary mystery, because in one form or another, we all have experienced stories attributed to the character known as “William Shakespeare.” Thanks for listening!
