Shakespeare's Sonnets: Crash Course Literature 304

12:27
This week, we're learning about sonnets, and English Literature's best-known purveyor of those fourteen-line paeans, William Shakespeare. We'll look at a few of Willy Shakes's biggest hits, including Sonnet 18, "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day," Sonnet 116, "Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediment," and Sonnet 130, "My mistresses's eyes are nothing like the sun." We'll talk about what makes a sonnet, a little bit about their history, and even a little bit about how reading poetry helps us understand how to be human beings.

Sonnet I by PaulaJedi - Shakespeare Style Romantic Poem, Love

00:41
Written in Shakespeare sonnet style. Romantic love poem with music. Sonnet I by PaulaJedi My dear you are so far but I do find Among this wretched world I lay unrest'd And nothing in my heart can ease my mind As sleeplessly these nights I do detest. Inside my head pictures of you do bleed. The heart within my chest pounds deathly on. It's you inside my arms that I do need Before my hopes burn ashes in the sun. You are my closest love, you are my fire. Your presence is what I truly desire. Royalty free music from www.looperman.com

Why Shakespeare loved iambic pentameter - David T. Freeman and Gregory Taylor

But a quick peek into the rhythm of his words reveals a poet deeply rooted in the way people spoke in his time — and still speak today. Why do Shakespeare’s words have such staying power? David T. Freeman and Gregory Taylor uncover the power of iambic pentameter. Lesson by David T. Freeman and Gregory Taylor, animation by Brad Purnell.

Ten Things I Learned From Shakespeare

01:10:07
Tuesday, 24 October 5:30pm Ten Things I Learned From Shakespeare Shakespeare was familiar with "wisdom traditions," which in the early modern period included the practice of collecting maxims, proverbs and wise sayings. In this lecture, Michael Witmore, Director of the Folger Shakespeare Library, looks at Shakespeare's plays themselves as a kind of wisdom literature - presenting ten ideas that can be carried away from his dramatic works and applied to situations we encounter today. The lecture was co-sponsored by the John Carter Brown Library, the Department of English, and the Department of Comparative Literature.

What Shakespeare's English Sounded Like - and how we know

06:34
Botched rhymes, buried puns and a staged accent that sounds more Victorian than Elizabethan. No more! Use linguistic sleuthing to dig up the surprisingly different sound of the bard's Early Modern English. Subscribe for language: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=NativLang Be my patron: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=584038 ~ Briefly, and without spoilers ~ I'm embarrassed to admit that this is the first time I ever really got into Shakespeare. There's a personal story here, which I'll quickly share in the video. The idea of reconstructing his pronunciation intrigued me. As I started making trips to the library and downloading old grammars, I just found the questions piling on. I did find some answers for you. It starts with his odd spelling - well, the spelling he inherited. Chaucer's medieval spelling was followed by modern sound changes, including the start of the Great Vowel Shift. The introduction of Caxton's printing press and the spelling debates put Early Modern English in a state of flux by Shakespeare's time. They also left our first trail of evidence. Other evidence comes from rhythm, rhymes and - more reluctantly - puns. Many of these don't work the same way anymore, from the rhymes like "sea" and "prey" to the rhythm of "housewifery". Modern dialects add another layer of evidence, at times preserving features that standard English accents, notably RP, have lost. The sound of his language is also shaped by his grammar. His use of "thou" and his third-person "-th" vs "-s" verb endings always stand out to English speakers. Finally, though data-crunchers challenge his legendary status as king of all the words, we consider how innovative he was in the way he used words. We end with a note on linguist David Crystal's Original Pronunciation ("OP") experiment at the reconstructed Globe Theatre, and some thoughts on what studying Shakespeare's sounds as a different pronunciation system says about him and about us. ~ Credits ~ Narration, art and animation by Josh from NativLang. Sonnet 12 by William Shakespeare (an interpretation)

13:00
Shakespeare shares his perspective on why people should have children. I compare and contrast this to Morrie Schwartz's perspective, as presented in "We Talk about Family" from the memoir Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom.
Why I love Shakespeare

08:34
Just a little, casual discussion video about why I like Shakespeare. I got a video "request!" :) Joseph, thanks for asking. I just think it's interesting how some writers carry so much weight to their name (like Shakespeare) whereas if I say that I like Jaclyn Moriarty's writing, nobody knows who on earth she is. They just smile and make Sherlock Holmes references to the villain, Moriarty. I think this affects our reading. Is it for better or for worse? Eh, it doesn't matter. Honestly, I just think you should read whatever makes you happy. Shakespeare has a sense of humour and a writing style to appeal to many different types of people, but his inclusion in the education system means that he has suffered at the hands of some (probably overworked) teachers. I'd say to give him a try though. He's not all bad.
Shakespeare's Sonnets Are Not Romantic.

11:31
Why it turns out Shakespeare's sonnets are not the best poems for Valentines Day. SONNET 1 From fairest creatures we desire increase, That thereby beauty's rose might never die, But as the riper should by time decease, His tender heir might bear his memory: But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes, Feed'st thy light's flame with self-substantial fuel, Making a famine where abundance lies, Thyself thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel. Thou that art now the world's fresh ornament And only herald to the gaudy spring, Within thine own bud buriest thy content And, tender churl, makest waste in niggarding. Pity the world, or else this glutton be, To eat the world's due, by the grave and thee. SONNET 12 When I do count the clock that tells the time, And see the brave day sunk in hideous night; When I behold the violet past prime, And sable curls all silver'd o'er with white; When lofty trees I see barren of leaves Which erst from heat did canopy the herd, And summer's green all girded up in sheaves Borne on the bier with white and bristly beard, Then of thy beauty do I question make, That thou among the wastes of time must go, Since sweets and beauties do themselves forsake And die as fast as they see others grow; And nothing 'gainst Time's scythe can make defence Save breed, to brave him when he takes thee hence. SONNET 18 Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer's lease hath all too short a date: Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimm'd; And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance, or nature's changing course, untrimm'd; But thy eternal summer shall not fade Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st; Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st; So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. SONNET 130 My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun; Coral is far more red than her lips' red; If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun; If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head. I have seen roses damask'd, red and white, But no such roses see I in her cheeks; And in some perfumes is there more delight Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks. I love to hear her speak, yet well I know That music hath a far more pleasing sound; I grant I never saw a goddess go; My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground: And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare As any she belied with false compare. Shakespeare Sonnet 32, If thou survive my well-contented day

01:08
For original Shakespeare sonnet 32 text and its modern translation, see below. For complete list of Sonnets see: https://goo.gl/2pLE3c For Shakespeare sonnet 32 analysis check: http://shakespearequotesandplays.com/shakespeare-sonnets/shakespeare-sonnet-32/ ORIGINAL TEXT If thou survive my well-contented day, When that churl death my bones with dust shall cover, And shalt by fortune once more re-survey These poor rude lines of thy deceasèd lover, Compare them with the bett'ring of the time, And though they be outstripped by every pen, Reserve them for my love, not for their rhyme, Exceeded by the height of happier men. O then vouchsafe me but this loving thought: “Had my friend’s muse grown with this growing age, A dearer birth than this his love had brought To march in ranks of better equipage. But since he died and poets better prove, Theirs for their style I’ll read, his for his love.” ______________________________________________________________ MODERN TEXT (Translation in simple English) If you survive me, living on after dust covers my bones, and you should happen to read over again these poor, crude sonnets written by the man who once loved you, remember that things have improved since my day. So even though any poet today could write better sonnets, keep my poems for the sake of my love, not for my skill, which luckier men have far surpassed. And grant me this loving thought: “If my friend’s inspiration was paired with the advantages today’s poets have, his love would have brought forth better poems than these, to rank alongside those of today’s better poets. But since he died, and poets are better now, I’ll read their poems for their style, his for his love.”

8 Ways Hamilton is Basically a Shakespeare Play

09:46
I love Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda and William Shakespeare's plays. Because I know both so well, I started to see similarities between them. They have more in common than many people would think! Here are 8 ways that Hamilton: An American Musical is like a Shakespeare play. 1. They use historical figures and sources. 2. They're culturally surprising! 3. They have mass appeal. 4. They use different styles for different characters. 5. They have freaking huge vocabularies. 6. They have similar themes. 7. They have morally ambiguous characters. 8. Epic insults! Favourite William Shakespeare Love Quotes

03:03
Favorite love quotes by William Shakespeare Love sought is good, but given unsought is better Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none. If music be the food of love, play on. The course of true love never did run smooth. As soon go kindle fire with snow, as seek to quench the fire of love with words. Love to faults is always blind, always is to joy inclined. Lawless, winged, and unconfined, and breaks all chains from every mind. Love is a smoke made with the fume of sighs. Who could refrain that had a heart to love and in that heart courage to make love known? The lunatic, the lover, and the poet, are of imagination all compact. Love is too young to know what conscience is. Love is not love that alters when it alteration finds. Speak low, if you speak love. The love of heaven makes one heavenly. They do not love that do not show their love. The stroke of death is as a lover's pinch, which hurts and is desired. We that are true lovers run into strange capers; but as all is mortal in nature, so is all nature in love mortal in folly. Where love is great, the littlest doubts are fear; When little fears grow great, great love grows there. A lover's eyes will gaze an eagle blind. A lover's ear will hear the lowest sound And when Love speaks, the voice of all the gods makes heaven drowsy with the harmony. Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind; And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind.

Hip-Hop & Shakespeare? Akala at TEDxAldeburgh

20:24
Akala demonstrates and explores the connections between Shakespeare and Hip-Hop, and the wider cultural debate around language and it's power. MOBO award-winning hip hop artist 'Akala' is a label owner and social entrepreneur who fuses rap/rock/electro-punk with fierce lyrical storytelling (think Wu-Tang Clan and Aphex Twin meets Rage Against The Machine). With Akala's latest record, convention-defying album DoubleThink, Akala has proven himself as one of the most dynamic and literate talents in the UK. Inspired by the likes of Saul Williams and Gil Scott Heron, Akala has also developed a reputation for stellar live performances with his drummer Cassell 'TheBeatmaker' headlining 5 UK tours and touring with everyone from Jay-Z, Nas & Damian Marley, M.I.A. and Christina Aguilera to Siouxsie Sue and Richard Ashcroft, appearing at numerous UK / European and US festivals (Glastonbury, Big Chill, Wireless, V, Hove and SXSW) also partnering with the British Council promoting British arts across Africa, Vietnam (the first rapper to perform a live concert in Vietnam), New Zealand and Australia. In 2009, Akala launched the 'The Hip-hop Shakespeare Company', a hotly-tipped music theatre production enterprise which has sparked worldwide media interest since its inception. Previous collaborators include: British actor; Sir Ian McKellen, actor/musician; Colin Salmon and Royal Shakespeare Company Voice Director; Cicely Berry. 2011 sees the launch Akala's latest endeavour 'Illa State Productions' to garner his budding scriptwriting talent alongside TV presenting and as a music composer for various TV and Film projects. Did Shakespeare write his plays? - Natalya St. Clair and Aaron Williams

View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/did-shakespeare-write-his-plays-natalya-st-clair-and-aaron-williams Some people question whether Shakespeare really wrote the works that bear his name – or whether he even existed at all. Could it be true that the greatest writer in the English language was as fictional as his plays? Natalya St. Clair and Aaron Williams show how a linguistic tool called stylometry might shed light on the answer. Lesson by Natalya St. Clair and Aaron Williams, animation by Pink Kong Studios.

For more information on all the sonnets visit http://www.theater330.com Modernized Spelling and Punctuation for Sonnet 78: So oft have I invoked thee for my Muse And found such fair assistance in my verse As every alien pen hath got my use And under thee their poesy disperse. Thine eyes that taught the dumb on high to sing And heavy ignorance aloft to fly Have added feathers to the learnèd's wing And given grace a double majesty. Yet be most proud of that which I compile, Whose influence is thine and born of thee. In others' works thou dost but mend the style, And arts with thy sweet graces gracèd be. But thou art all my art and dost advance As high as learning my rude ignorance.

To the 1 i love.. Alwyn Shakespeare & HIs Erotic Maid created ~ nicola ray

To a young lady who means much to me . . . . . . It wat for passion that i played for francesca, for what ever es reason I nevre knew = and more can any thing - no - abou fact es film make life as second rate absolutely second rate. & she is like going NUTTERS. Slave, i wait for it. And, Nietzsche we say at Kings who first of all turned me down.... Here is how story might go....Alwyn: "My boyfriend met me when I was 7 doctors and nurses then we played in the bedroom when his mother only ever bought us Welsh Rarebit I thought it was rabbit - I wonder why. Now! "Dykesyboy" - he was what a real master plays on an organ a girl needs to know. Cistene Chapel ceiling's his style - like mud? Another finest I ever heard of one viewer told me on any organ was Jerry Allen of Dunstable whose following wherever he played all women wondered who the hell he was and followed his perfromances devoutly. 'That's the new STAR' - one watched from the car you perceive that blew wolf-whistles - (anyone here seen Kelly?) ..... The metamorphosis of a theme by my definition? - duet from one. YOU! Young composer! Where are you are going to? KNOW it NOW! Curiously re piano competitions not the Leeds, (Oh No not the Leeds!) are so BOUND by their adjudicators or the notes written; musical? When you wind 'em up." (clatter off-set} "Why brand they contrite? Why tolerate their "imbecile" - shouted by the director who was onl a floor manager. Wherefore succour "lesser"? Be the understanding of the regurgitation of "Your Masters Voice" - Not MINE!!!" {vacant Alwyn loses herself , ,- in thought} {in thought}: I fell in love with the girl down the road - unusually she is going to sing my Song boiling on trajedgy "Song To Aphrodite" when I'm not so stuck for cash at the moment she's payin' me...I don't deserve it. Which guy would YOU take out? - That you fancy? Which "unfairy" macho man-of-notes would you TAKE OUT? Shakespeare in Love? Of the Brahms (Piano Concerto) I have heard worse - seen a whole swot of notes omimtted and the pianist still awarded First Prize; for sittin' there - won't or who would(!) mention the town of the competition Frank to be really Frank I like silence. I prefer it to listenning to Brahms. The "Master's(?)" final punch. To thrive in the immortal. To establish Heavens. Fit? Try jumping over the wall - The Scrubbs. The things we punish for "Honour" "Yer Honour". Adjudicate??... Forgive me! Who? WHO(??) WAS a woman? - a woman COMPOSER (?) I find it hard for ONE. Who find's it hard for TWO? Most of you - as ANYONE albeit having been to their local fish & chip shop has come a-cropper - the curious invariably: "How would you like Plaice instead of Cod?" In fact he's the better, a big fish in fish and chip circles.. when I was 6 this was the last year I fell in love, it was with another girl, her curls stopped at her shoulders but seemingly ran below her crotch or they were mine - the Headmistress was running member of parliament - she still hasn;t got in - so made an example of me by sending me to see her; while: during drama lessons you know wha t it's aoutb Well! HERE I AM!# Adolph Hitler - id he(?) love those often who were his inferior copies? Yes - like that architect: I cannot remember his name but his foundations weren'ty they a bit shakey for 'The Other Brandenburg Gate'?. $400Billion American Dollar Reparations-a-bit-shakin' Stevie Wonder won't you make my green eyes blue. I was really going to sing for this audition but a young lady from Wales is practicing my Song To Aphrodite, that art music and dance all at once lays tatters to your GREAT composers mirror life when all at once so completely are the - that pefectly don't you think they feel better off dead? - Makes you think, I have a dead uncle who really appreciates Mendelssohn - well, look where it got him . . For me, I gave up the violin although Elgar was quite fond of the girl playing it - I gave it to her (mine) a rather pretty young lady -you would; all! Know that about the singing, my songs, I have seven 12 year olds lined up for the part of soprano neither the two of them hit the highs - it's gettin the gigs the thing. West Side Story (4/10) Movie CLIP - America (1961) HD

04:29
West Side Story movie clips: http://j.mp/1LkjWFw BUY THE MOVIE: http://j.mp/16TMZIG Don't miss the HOTTEST NEW TRAILERS: http://bit.ly/1u2y6pr CLIP DESCRIPTION: Anita (Rita Moreno) sings about the great land of America. FILM DESCRIPTION: Romeo and Juliet is updated to the tenements of New York City in this Oscar-winning musical landmark. Adapted by Ernest Lehman from the Broadway production, the movie opens with an overhead shot of Manhattan, an effect that director Robert Wise would repeat over the Alps in The Sound of Music four years later. We are introduced to two rival street gangs: the Jets, second-generation American teens, and the Sharks, Puerto Rican immigrants. When the war between the Jets and Sharks reaches a fever pitch, Jets leader Riff (Russ Tamblyn) decides to challenge the Sharks to one last "winner take all" rumble. He decides to meet Sharks leader Bernardo (George Chakiris) for a war council at a gymnasium dance; to bolster his argument, Riff wants his old pal Tony (Richard Beymer), the cofounder of the Jets, to come along. But Tony has set his sights on vistas beyond the neighborhood and has fallen in love with Bernardo's sister, Maria (Natalie Wood), a love that, as in Romeo and Juliet, will eventually end in tragedy. In contrast to the usual slash-and-burn policy of Hollywood musical adaptations, all the songs written by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim for the original Broadway production of West Side Story were retained for the film version, although some alterations were made to appease the Hollywood censors, and the original order of two songs was reversed for stronger dramatic impact. The movie more than retains the original choreography of Jerome Robbins, which is recreated in some of the most startling and balletic dance sequences ever recorded on film. West Side Story won an almost-record ten Oscars, including Best Picture, supporting awards to Chakiris and Rita Moreno as Bernardo's girlfriend, Anita, and Best Director to Robbins and Wise. Richard Beymer's singing was dubbed by Jimmy Bryant, Natalie Wood's by Marni Nixon (who also dubbed Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady), and Rita Moreno's by Betty Wand. The film's New York tenement locations were later razed to make room for Lincoln Center. CREDITS: TM & © MGM (1961) Cast: Jose De Vega, Jay Norman, Jaime Rogers, Larry Roquemore, Robert E. Thompson, Gus Trikonis, Eddie Verso, Rita Moreno, Marni Nixon Directors: Jerome Robbins, Robert Wise Producers: Saul Chaplin, Robert Wise, Walter Mirisch Screenwriters: Ernest Lehman, Arthur Laurents, William Shakespeare, Jerome Robbins WHO ARE WE? Sonnet no 142: By William Shakespeare

01:16
Sonnet no 142: By William Shakespeare Read by: Bertram Selwyn "Love is my sin and thy dear virtue hate, Hate of my sin, grounded on sinful loving: O, but with mine compare thou thine own state, And thou shalt find it merits not reproving; Or, if it do, not from those lips of thine, That have profaned their scarlet ornaments And seal'd false bonds of love as oft as mine, Robb'd others' beds' revenues of their rents. Be it lawful I love thee, as thou lovest those Whom thine eyes woo as mine importune thee: Root pity in thy heart, that when it grows Thy pity may deserve to pitied be. If thou dost seek to have what thou dost hide, By self-example mayst thou be denied!" Sonnet no 32: By William Shakespeare Read by: Bertram Selwyn (Bernard Shakespeare) "If thou survive my well-contented day, When that churl Death my bones with dust shall cover And shalt by fortune once more re-survey These poor rude lines of thy deceased lover, Compare them with the bett'ring of the time, And though they be outstripped by every pen, Reserve them for my love, not for their rhyme, Exceeded by the height of happier men. O! then vouchsafe me but this loving thought: 'Had my friend's Muse grown with this growing age, A dearer birth than this his love had brought, To march in ranks of better equipage: But since he died and poets better prove, Theirs for their style I'll read, his for his love'." "The Sonnets" by William Shakespeare - Sonnet 39

01:00
Oh, how thy worth with manners may I sing When thou art all the better part of me? What can mine own praise to mine own self bring, And what is't but mine own when I praise thee? Even for this, let us divided live, And our dear love lose name of single one, That by this separation I may give That due to thee which thou deserv'st alone. O absence, what a torment wouldst thou prove Were it not thy sour leisure gave sweet leave To entertain the time with thoughts of love, Which time and thoughts so sweetly dost deceive, And that thou teachest how to make one twain, By praising him here who doth hence remain.

Shakespeare Sonnet no. 115 - Kristina Arakelyan

10:45
Musical setting of Shakespeare Sonnet no. 115 by Kristina Arakelyan. Recording from the performance on 29th May, 2015 in the Stratford Artshouse in Stratford-Upon-Avon. April Fredrick-soprano The Orchestra Of The Swan David Curtis-conductor The Sonnet: Those lines that I before have writ do lie, Even those that said I could not love you dearer; Yet then my judgment knew no reason why My most full flame should afterwards burn clearer. But reckoning Time, whose million'd accidents Creep in 'twixt vows and change decrees of kings, Tan sacred beauty, blunt the sharp'st intents, Divert strong minds to the course of altering things; Alas, why, fearing of Time's tyranny, Might I not then say 'Now I love you best,' When I was certain o'er incertainty, Crowning the present, doubting of the rest? Love is a babe; then might I not say so, To give full growth to that which still doth grow? Programme note How can we tell where Time might take us? William Shakespeare's Sonnet no 115 ('Those Lines That I Before Have Writ Do Lie') is about the inevitable change that Time will bring into out lives; particularly to the feeling of romantic love. Written in a style more reminiscent of an opera, my composition “Those Lines That I Before Have Writ Do Lie” starts with an orchestral introduction where we hear the main thematic materials. The melody heard in the very beginning reflects the poet's anxiety over his inability to control what Time may bring; the softly played melody that follows in symbolises love; and the repeated 'bell' motif represents Time. The latter is the most important motif and it comes back seven times. The first line that the Soprano sings: “Those lines that I before have writ do lie”, is in an apologetic and anxious tone and the orchestra echoes the singer's sentiment. However the music soon gathers pace and becomes more energetic as the poem unfolds; as if representing someone who becomes more and more confident in their speech. The climactic point in the Sonnet reads “But Reck'ning Time whose million'd accidents Creept in twixt vows and change decrees of kings[...]” and in my music this is where we hear the Soprano's highest and most expressive singing. As an accompaniment to these powerful words the orchestra plays the above-mentioned 'bell' motif, symbolising the chime of a clock. The composition ends with the orchestra musically representing the word “grow” as the Soprano sings a high held note.
