Which brands are “fast fashion”? How to tell (in 4 points) ǀ Justine Leconte

06:51
Fast fashion means that the brands produce in countries where labor is very cheap because the laws don't protect the garment workers. The clothes produced are of poor quality and execution, and they get sold at incredibly cheap prices in "rich countries". Since they are trendy in design, they will get out of fashion quite quickly. In fact, fast fashion brands even release new collections every 2 weeks, to make clothes previously purchased... obsolete. How to tell if a brand is "fast fashion": 1. Look at the brands producing in countries and factories where accidents happen. These brands clearly don't care about where and how their clothes get produced... 2. Research to which larger corporations these brands belong. It is very likely that a huge corporation like Inditex (Zara, Mango...) uses similar production methods for all its brands. 3. Understand the mindset of the brands / corporations that belong to the fast fashion industry: if they outsource their productions to countries where labor rights aren't respected, it is probably not to be charitable. Then claiming to use organic cotton (as an example of PR action) just can't make it up for ethically questionable practices. 4. Learn the break down of a price tag. If a Primark t-shirt costs 5€ in retail, how much of that actually goes to the garment worker? Thumbs up if you liked this video :-) If you subscribe to this channel and click on the bell, you will be notified when a new video goes live! the reality of not buying fast fashion

12:15
this video isn't mean to discourage anyone on this journey, but I thought I would talk about some of the biggest changes and struggles I've noticed in my first year of not buying fast fashion. of course these are bound to change as I continue on, and the most important thing is to stick with it! even if you can't stop buying fast fashion cold turkey, I encourage each of you to at least shop it a little less, thrift a little more, and think twice before you buy something ensuring you really love it before giving it a new home :) for more info watch this video | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjYeV7Bbd_g try the method I personally use for online counseling | https://www.tryonlinetherapy.com/sarahhawkinson ------------------------------------------------------------------ e m a i l | [email protected] i n s t a g r a m | http://instagram.com/sarahhawkinson t w i t t e r | https://twitter.com/#!/sarahmhawkinson d e p o p | https://www.depop.com/en-us/sarahhawkinson p a t r e o n | https://www.patreon.com/sarahhawkinson h o r r o r . c h a n n e l | http://bit.ly/1h7ZKUF v l o g . c h a n n e l | https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7nLpU9hf_QjLSxmKCeZ68Q ------------------------------------------------------------------ c a m e r a | canon rebel t5i e d i t o r | adobe premiere pro cs5.5 FTC | not a sponsored video #fastfashion #fashion

How fast fashion adds to the world's clothing waste problem (Marketplace)

22:24
Fast fashion is a major contributor to the world's clothing waste problem. Many of us give our old clothes to charity or drop them in a store take-back bin, but you might be surprised to learn most of it is sold and can end up in the landfill. Is fast fashion destroying our environment?

05:07
In this Our Changing Climate environmental video essay, I look at the environmental impact of fast fashion. Specifically, I look at how fast fashion impacts climate change through the production process of polyester and post-consumption through waste. As a result, stores like H&M, Uniqlo, and Zara have huge carbon footprints and negatively affect the environment. Fashion's naked truths | The Economist

01:47
Half of all clothes are thrown away within one year—many have never been worn. The industry's obsession with fast fashion comes with a steep environmental price tag. Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: https://econ.st/2xvTKdy Fashion is one of the fastest-growing industries on the planet. Around the world eighty billion new pieces of clothing are sold every year - 400% more than just forty years ago. Americans alone are buying five times more garments than in 1980. Now a $1.3 trillion mega industry, fashion employs more than 300 million people worldwide. While other industries have come apart at the seams, clothing production has doubled in the last 15 years. But it's a fashion statement with a steep environmental price tag - making one kilogram of fabric produces 23 kilograms of greenhouse gases. Textile production generates more carbon dioxide than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. Yet half of all clothes are thrown away within one year - many having never been worn. Fashion is now considered the second most polluting industry in the world after oil. And with increasing middle classes in the developing world keen to make their own fashion statement, this will get worse. If 80 percent of emerging markets reach Western levels of clothes shopping, carbon dioxide emissions could increase by nearly 80% per person. By 2050 total clothing sales could reach 175 million tons - turning the planet into the biggest fashion victim of them all. How Zara Took Over The Industry Using Fast Fashion

04:02
Today, we’re going to look at the history of Zara, its parent company Inditex, and the fashion industry in general, to see how it became possible to create such a high churn rate in the fashion industry. An average American will throw away 77 pounds of clothing every year. And that’s true across the majority of the western world. That is two suitcases of clothes, just dumped. Zara’s first store opened in 1975, in a city called A Coruna in northern Spain. Owners Amancio Ortega and Rosalia Mera had wanted to name it after a favorite Greek film called Zorba the Greek, but a bar on their street had already beat them to the punch, so they settled for Zara, since they had already had the letters made for the sign. Inditex was set up in 1985 as holding company for Zara and the manufacturing plants. They went on to set up and take-over many other high-street brands that follow Zara’s format; such as Pull and Bear, Bershka and Stradivarius. They now have over 6000 stores globally. Zara’s early business model was to create similar copies to high end lines but at an affordable price. As they expanded through Spain, Ortega pushed the idea of instant fashion, where Zara could react incredibly quickly to new trends so they could put new lines on the shelves in a fraction of the normal time. -----------------Support the channel: Support this channel: https://www.patreon.com/alexberman SUBSCRIBE for more videos like this: http://youtube.com/alxberman?sub_confirmation=1 Check out our Digital Agency Marketing Podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/hr/podcast/digital-agency-marketing-1/id1200614219?mt=2&ls=1 Need lead generation or marketing support for your agency? The FAST FASHION trap & how to escape | #whomademyclothes | Justine Leconte

Fast fashion is a quite recent phenomenon and it has completely changed the fashion industry. Here is my view on what fast fashion is, what the business model behind it is & what you and me can do, as individual consumers, to resist its negative effects and make informed decisions for ourselves. I had a lot to say about it so the video turned out quite long… forgive me! Oh, and if you wondered if a kid was screaming in the background, yes, the neighbors’ kids were extremely active during the entire filming time… Further readings: Project 3-33 MyGreenCloset reporting about her experience doing it for a full year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-TH4dDw5kU #whomademyclothes (e.g. on Instagram) and the Fashion Revolution every year in April The building that collapsed and killed over 1000 people in 2013: Rana Plaza, in Bangladesh Book: Overdressed, the shockingly high cost of cheap fashion, by Elizabeth Cline Give this video your two thumbs up… and subscribe to this channel because: - it is free! - you don’t miss any future video! Fast fashion to fair fashion: a toolbox to change the fashion industry | TEDx Talk | Justine Leconte

18:19
My TEDx talk is online! I was invited to speak about fast fashion at TEDxUniversityofMacedonia, in Thessaloniki, Greece. Instead of pointing at the negative effects that fast fashion brands have on the garment workers in the producing countries, I took on a more positive approach and made it a concrete "toolbox" to help individual consumers raise their awareness and change their behaviours. I think change starts with the consumer. Thumbs up if you liked this video :-) New videos: Wednesday 4pm & Sunday 12pm (Paris/Berlin time). Take care! The Truth About Lori & Mossimo's Insanely Glamorous Life

09:37
Fashion mogul Mossimo Giannulli, and Fuller House actress Lori Loughlin are a recently disgraced So Cal power couple with so much money they blew half a million bucks cheating to get a daughter into college who didn't even want to be there. Whether you love them, hate them, forgive them, or forgot all about them, here's a peek inside their insanely glamorous life of Loughlin, Giannulli, and their daughters Bella and Olivia Jade. If you thought Giannulli's name sounded familiar, you probably shopped at Target on the reg between 2000 and 2017. That's because Target carried Giannulli's clothing line Mossimo during that time. That licensing deal helped make the brand, which Mossimo started with $100,000 of his father's money, a ubiquitous and profitable fast fashion staple for years. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Mossimo is worth a whopping $80 million. But Giannulli isn't the only member of the family with a seven figure bank account. Loughlin is worth $20 million on her own. The actress, who is best known for her role as Aunt Becky on Full House and Fuller House, has worked consistently on a variety of below-radar projects through the decades, keeping her wallet fat. That money came in handy, because as of the making of this video, both Loughlin and Giannulli are out on a $1 million dollar bond each. If you were rich and had to post a cool mil to ensure you didn't have to languish in jail before your day in court, where would you want to spend your days? Perhaps in an opulent, multi-million dollar mansion in Bel Air? That's exactly where Loughlin and Giannulli are calling HQ, as that's where they've lived since 2015. The couple purchased the home in 2015 for just under $14 million. The mansion overlooks the prestigious Bel-Air Country Club, playground of the SoCal elite. It doesn't get any fancier than that! Among the amenities, the mansion boasts an area of 12,000 square feet, and has six bedrooms and nine bathrooms — pretty extravagant for a family of four. Additionally, it has a lap pool, five garages, golf course access, a full bar, and an elegant library, to name just a few of the amenities. So pretty much anything you could want is right on-site! Keep watching the video to see the truth about Lori & Mossimo's insanely glamorous life! #AdmissionsScandal #LoriLoughlin #OliviaJade The numbers | 0:26 The Full House of Bel Air | 1:16 Reno 411 | 2:04 Dining in | 3:02 Turning down reality | 3:40 Designer everything | 4:19 Olivia Jade, brand ambassador | 4:54 Bella the baller | 5:43 Friends in high places | 6:28 Bella loves boats, too | 7:13 Olivia the Globetrotter | 7:54 Bella goes big | 8:36

WHY FAST FASHION IS NOTHING TO BE EXCITED ABOUT #CONSUMERISM

05:15
Hello Awesome People, Today I talk about the problem with fast fashion. #fastfashionissue I know there has been already a lot of videos on the subject, but I think its important to spread the news anyway. The reason to repeat it is that fast fashion problem still grows. We all can fall into fast fashion trap!!! #consciousness The video is touching on the subject of manipulation in marketing, fake sales and discounts, cruelty towards employees and impact on the planet. #fastfashion I know that together we can change the way in which brands treat us. We are not stupid and we should not let huge conglomerates to treat us as such. If you agree, I would be happy if you share this video with as many people as you can. Support all the fast fashion employees by refusing to buy their clothes. #wecandoit Stay awesome! Are the rumours true? Do our favourite clothing brands really exploit workers abroad? Do they turn a blind eye to child labour and unsafe working conditions? And if things are as bad as we fear… what can we – the consumers – do about it? Are You A Good Influence? (Fast Fashion VS Sustainable Clothing)

12:50
Today's internet analysis is all about focusing on the influence of an influencer, specifically in the realm of fashion content on YouTube. Some fashion vloggers promote huge hauls of cheap Chinese retailers, some promote more sustainable, ethical, minimalist, or mindful shopping, and many fall somewhere in between. #fastfashion #sustainablefashion #internetanalysis "I spent $500 on Boohoo, Zaful, SheIn, FashionNova" ... is that good to promote to your audience? Is it good to glorify overconsumption and buying more clothing than you need? Of course not everyone is perfect, but I think influencers should be mindful of promoting less wasteful shopping habits. Shop a bit less at fast fashion giants like Forever21, and try to look for some pieces secondhand, thrifted, or at a sustainable store. Is it Ethical to buy Fast Fashion Secondhand?

05:05
Come for a walk with me! In this video I chat about why I think it's okay to buy fast fashion brands second hand and a few things to think about when doing so. As I've mentioned in other videos shopping secondhand is one of the most sustainable and ethical ways to buy clothes - you are not using any new resources or supporting unethical manufacturing, and you're reducing waste. It's also a very affordable way to reduce your impact and build a conscious wardrobe. I would love to hear your thoughts on this! Fashion's Crippling Impact On The Environment Is Only Getting Worse (HBO)

03:40
The fashion week tents have been packed up and the models sent home until the next collection debuts, but one deeply entrenched industry trend shows no sign of stopping: Fast fashion, which has become one of the biggest sources of pollution in the world. According to a recent report, the textile industry emits more greenhouse gas emissions than international shipping and aviation combined. And the amount of waste the industry generates, as well as how much water and resources it uses, is increasing. Since 2000, global clothes production has more than doubled, and the average person now buys 60 percent more items of clothing every year and keeps them for about half as long as they did 15 years ago. In the USA, over 85 percent of those clothes end up in a landfill. China, which produces 50 percent of the world's textiles, and imports the largest amount of recycled clothing, has been dealing with pollution from the industry for decades: Most recycled clothing from around the world is up routed there and turned into recycled yarn. But starting this year, China will begin implementing a ban on the import of 24 solid materials, including textiles. Nate Herman, the Senior Vice President of Supply Chain for the American Apparel & Footwear Association told VICE News things are going to get much worse. “They have cut the source materials for recycled fabrics. It will have a very negative effect on our efforts to make the industry more sustainable,” he said. But recycling clothes currently is extremely difficult — much of our clothing is from blended fabrics or synthetic materials, meaning that it is often more time and resource intensive to recycle them than to just produce new clothes. Some experts, such as Ellen MacArthur whose foundation is leading the charge on creating a circular economy for textiles and who estimates that waste generated from textiles is worth $500 billion a year, believes that the fashion industry needs to go beyond just better recycling. The True Cost of Fast Fashion ~ Today We Learned... // Lauren Lee

09:24
I recently watched "The True Cost” a documentary about the fast fashion industry, and along with that I took it upon myself to learn more and be educated on the topic as a whole. 25 THINGS to buy INSTEAD of FAST FASHION⎟2019

11:45
Here it is: the list of 25 things YOU should buy this year instead of participating in the incredibly wasteful fast-fashion industry. From experiences and things to do, physical fitness, the incredibly inclusive world of self-care, and treatments that make you feel better to de-stress, these are my top 25 things I would rather all of you buy this year instead of participating in the fast fashion industry. A recent study by the Ellen McArthur Foundation found that one garbage truck worth of textiles (fabric for those of us who aren't very word-savvy) is wasted EVERY SECOND. The Copenhagen Fashion Summit reported that fashion is responsible for 92 MILLION TONS of solid waste dumped in landfills EVERY YEAR. Do your part and focus on self-care, things to do, activities, physical fitness, experiences, meals, and loved ones this 2019. Say yes to memories you can keep with you a lifetime, and minimize the amount you contribute to the landfill every time you grab a $2 tank top at forever 21. ♥︎FOLLOW ME ON THE SOCIALS♥︎: instagram & twitter: @infamous_rae Dory's instagram: @dorythedane This video is made for entertainment purposes only. Why Your Feminist T-Shirt Is Problematic ♀

Are fast fashion t-shirts promoting feminism aligned with true feminist values? Or perhaps is the cheap price tag based on an entire system of exploitation of factory workers where most of them are women? In today's video I explain why a feminist tshirt from H&M, Zara, Forever 21, Asos, Primark, Topshop and any other fast fashion store is very problematic. How to shop for sustainable fashion | Justine Leconte

06:19
This video answers your questions from 3 weeks ago: How to know which fashion brands are ethical and sustainable? Where to shop for sustainable clothes? My 5 tips: 1. Visit the brand’s ABOUT section: are they being transparent about their process and about where the fabrics come from? 2. Google the brand: were there sourcing scandals in which the brand was involved? 3. Look out for certification symbols in online shops and check the symbols on the Eco Label Index: http://goo.gl/9KTKSr Examples: GOTS and FAIR TRADE. 4. Research by country, brand or production criteria on Eco Fashion World: http://goo.gl/DWMntR Example: ABURY, my friend’s label based in Berlin with production in Marocco: http://goo.gl/h2XE8m 5. Read blogs and websites about sustainable fashion. Here are a few interesting ones: Guide to buying sustainable, fair trade and vegan clothing: http://goo.gl/9oBYS0 Affordable fashion online: http://goo.gl/zWxn7d Sourcing directory for fashion: http://goo.gl/A3t2Y5 Ethical Consumer – the website of the magazine: http://goo.gl/NYHe8N And if you see a brand doing something wrong, say it! Cheap Ways To Avoid Fast Fashion

26:13
This week (starting 24/04/17) is fashion revolution week. Following the Rana Plaza disaster in 2013, this week every year has been dedicating to asking #whomademyclothes, asking brands if they're being fair to their workers, and if they are being sustainable as a brand. I thought it would be helpful to come up with three cost effective ways to avoid fast fashion. What do you know about the clothes in your wardrobe? About the clothes that you’re wearing right now? Clara Vuletich works with some of the biggest brands in the world to help them ask the right questions about where the clothes that we wear come from. Clara is a designer, researcher, educator and consultant who has worked in the sustainable fashion space in UK and Europe for ten years, and is now based in Sydney, Australia. She was part of the team at the University of the Arts London who designed The TEN, a pioneering sustainable design methodology used by brands including H & M; VF. Corp. and Gucci Group. Clara has recently established a consultancy business that utilises The TEN framework to equip Australian fashion companies with training and insight on sustainable product innovation and strategy. How ZARA Took Over The Fashion World

Instagram: https://goo.gl/vzBDdg Facebook: https://goo.gl/DZmAeM Twitter: https://goo.gl/6gvG4T #Business #Fashion When we think at some of the greatest companies in the world, we think of examples such as Google, Amazon and so on. But one of the richest men in the world has made his fortune through the most traditional business you can think about - selling clothes. In fact, in the summer of 2017, the shares of his company soared and for a couple of hours and he held the title of the richest man in the world. But Gates claimed back his position later on the same day. Without any formal education except for the first few years in school, he has built the largest clothing company in the entire world. It all started in Spain. Back then child labor was normal. So Amancio left school at the age of 13 to start working as a delivery boy in a local shirtmaker shop. Where he learned to make clothes by hand. He loved his job and started excelling at it, so much that by the time he was 24, he was appointed as a manager. Not bad for the 1960s, right? Ortega realized that only the wealthy residents could afford their clothes so he started working on his own designs that are more affordable. He started producing pretty similar designs but at a much lower cost targeting the rest of the residents. His strategy work out and he successfully sold all of his designs and used the earnings to open his first factory in 1963 Finally, in 1975, he decided to establish his own brand and named Zara. Zara’s strategy was absolutely simple, sell quality products for a reasonable price so that everyone could afford them. This strategy seems so obvious, why others didn't use it. When Ortega was working in that shirtmaker store. He realized that how the cost of the garments significantly increase when they move from designers to factories to stores. He learned the importance of delivering products directly to consumers without third-party distributors. So Zara started doing everything by itself. This reducing the cost But Ortego’s ambitions didn't stop there, it was time to go international. He established his first store outside Spanish borders in Portugal, in 1988. And a year later In New York. And since then the company has been unstoppable. Ortega realized he can't target all the segments of the market through Zara. So he acquired many different brands such as Pull&Bear, Bershka, Massimo Dutti and so on. And formed them all under a holding company - Inditex. But Zara is the biggest of them, it accounts for over 60% of total sales. Unlike other brands, Zara didn't waste money on advertisements. It knew that as long as there are quality clothes for affordable prices, people are going to buy them, so they kept opening new stores instead. By the year 2000, Zara had stores all around North America and Europe. So it was time to invade Asia and the rest of the world. Inditex has over 7000 stores now. What also sets them apart is that, since everything is done in-house. Zara can design a product and get them into stores in less 2 weeks compare to 6 month which is industry average. Ortega followed just in time production strategy. That means they made their supply chain so effective that they could supply their stores in less than 48 hours. Which means, they don't need to order more than they need and if something is selling too good. They know that they can have it back on the shelves in 48 hours. That provided Zara with absolutely unique advantage. This incredible success story started with a 13-year-old kid who simply had a dream and didn't have any formal education. It seems like nothing is impossible as long as you are patient, dedicated and hard working.
