How to create a responsive navigation with Flexbox and CSS Grid and a no JS dropdown

44:13
My very first video that I published here is one on creating a navigation. It worked, it looks good, and it's insanely popular (by far my most popular video). The problem is, it isn't responsive and is a bit old school in that it uses floats. In this video, I take that same navigation but I update it to take advantage of modern CSS, making it fixed top, adding a semi-transparent background, creating the dropdown without any javascript, using flexbox and CSS grid to lay it out, and changing up the pseudo-element transitions to be higher performance. A commenter kindly pointed out that this isn't tabbable, which is an issue and causes accessibility issues. I've updated my CodePen to take this into account. Basically, I changed the 'display: none' on the input, which makes it almost useless, to instead have a position absolute on it and moved it way off screen. Then, I made it so when the input gains focus, the label gets highlighted to give us a visual clue as well. If you'd like to check it out, the codepen link is down below. Timestamps 3:15 - starting the markup 3:15 5:15 - starting the CSS 13:40 - creating the mobile toggle 23:55 - adding in the animation 31:20 - styling it for large screens 39:00 - adding the pseudo elements Codepen: https://codepen.io/kevinpowell/pen/jxppmr Related videos CSS Variables: https://youtu.be/PHO6TBq_auI Specificity: https://youtu.be/c0kfcP_nD9E Pseudo elements: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4-IK0AVhVjPBX_HelwDlNsTiyr2YGSBw Hamburger to X animation: https://youtu.be/FqbOu5ZRFag?t=24m50s CSS Grid: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4-IK0AVhVjPv5tfS82UF_iQgFp4Bl998 --- I have a newsletter! https://www.kevinpowell.co/newsletter New to Sass, or want to step up your game with it? CSS Display none vs Visibility hidden

02:28
1. Display none: When this property is attached to an element, it will entirely remove that element from page. No space will be taken by this element on page. 2. Visibility hidden: When this property is attached to an element, it will hide the element but it will occupy its space on the page.

HTML5 Video Gallery with jQuery, Creating a div container to hold the video player code

09:06
Now Fancy box gives us a couple of options for how we load content into its light box. The one we want to use is called Inline which means we can pull HTML content from within the page and load it into the light box. I want to use this method because I want to use JavaScript to manipulate the code first and then have that code be what we load into light box and want to manipulate the code based on the values inside of the anchor links. So the first thing we are going to need is a container, a place that we can actually put this code. So let's start by creating a div tag after the div that has the video gallery container. So we will type div style=''. End the div. Inside of the quotes for style we will type display:none, semicolon. Let's split this div open. Let's add another div inside of that, ID=''. Let's end the div. Inside of the div we will type video Player. Choose File Save. So what we are going to do when we manipulate our HTML 5 with Flash fallback video Player code, we are going to inject it inside of this div with ID.

How to Create Pure CSS Tooltip Without Using jQuery or Javascript

13:14
How to Create Pure CSS3 and HTML5 Tooltip Without Using jQuery or Javascript with demo example. You are going to create pure CSS tooltip using single html anchor tag. We are just using a single html anchor element and html5 data attribute to create a stylish tooltip with left arrow using pure css only and utilizing css3 after and before selectors. No other tags are used or neither any javascript or jquery. Everything we do is just by using CSS only. Download tooltip source code from codepen: https://codepen.io/smashtheshell/pen/bVoXjW In this video you'll learn to create a css tooltip also known as css infotip or hint message. I am going to explain every bit possible, related to html5 css3 tooltip only. You will see how its easy to create html5 toolip using css properties only. Key takeaways from this html5 css3 based tooltip video tutorial You will learn to use: - HTML5 data attribute to set the tooltip title - CSS3 after and before pseudo selectors to create tooltip left arrow without images. - CSS3 transitions add css tooltip animation - CSS3 attrib() method and CSS content property to retrieve data from the html5 data-attribute from anchor tag. - And finally you will create an amazing tooltip css only and adding animation to your tooltip. Basically tooltip is used to display information to the user when they hover over their cursor to some images, icons, text or links. Tooltips can be very useful to display information when there is space constraints in design. By using infotip or hint you can display long descriptions to the user without affecting your design. Creating tooltips using pure css have never been so easier, but here you'll see the clever use of CSS3 after and before pseudo selector and the most importantly you will see the use of content property of CSS3 and its attrib() method, By using attrib() method we'll fetch the information from the element's attribute. You'll learn how to create a custom attribute to an element and then fetch information from this attribute to your document by mere use of CSS3 content property. Then I'll style the information and initially make it hidden by setting its opacity to none and visibility property to hidden. And on the hover state I'll show you how to again use after & before pseudo selectors to display the tooltip. You'll also learn to create the triangle shape speech bubble using pure CSS3. For this I'll be using CSS3 Border property. You can create triangle by setting the one side of border to solid color and other two sides of the border to solid transparent. Finally, In this video lots of stuffed is packed. Just watch this video and reveals the powerful magic of CSS3. jQuery add event handler to dynamically created element

09:15
Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?sort=dd&view=1 Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/04/jquery-add-event-handler-to-dynamically.html In this video we will discuss, how to add event handlers to dynamically created elements. Let us understand this with an example. The following example, allows us to dynamically create new list item (li), attach a click event handler and add it to the unordered list (ul). This happens when you click "Add a New List Item" button. The problem with this approach is that we are binding a click event handler to every list item. This means if you have 500 list items, then there will be 500 event handlers in the memory and this may negatively affect the performance of your application. <html> <head> <title></title> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('li').on('click', function () { $(this).fadeOut(500); }); $('#btnAdd').on('click', function () { var newListItem = $('<li>New List Item</li>').on('click', function () { $(this).fadeOut(500); }); $('ul').append(newListItem); }); }); </script> </head> <body style="font-family:Arial"> <input id="btnAdd" type="button" value="Add a New List Item" /> <ul> <li>List Item</li> <li>List Item</li> </ul> </body> </html> A better way of doing the same from a performance standpoint is shown below. In this example, the click event handler is attached to the listitem (li) parent element (ul). Even if you have 500 list items, there is only one click event handler in memory. So how does this work 1. When you click on a list item (li), the event gets bubbled up to its parent (ul) as the list item (li) does not have an event handler 2. The bubbled event is handled by the the parent (ul) element, as it has a click event handler. 3. When a new list item is added dynamicaly, you don't have to add the click event handler to it. Since the newly created list item (li) is added to the same parent element (ul), the click event of this list item also gets bubbled upto the same parent and will be handled by it. <html> <head> <title></title> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('ul').on('click', 'li', function () { $(this).fadeOut(500); }); $('#btnAdd').on('click', function () { $('ul').append('<li>New List Item</li>'); }); }); </script> </head> <body style="font-family:Arial"> <input id="btnAdd" type="button" value="Add a New List Item" /> <ul> <li>List Item</li> <li>List Item</li> </ul> </body> </html>

HTML5 Basics - Display Types (Part5)

07:06
In this video we are going to talk about something inherent to html tags: display types. Display types define how the tags behave when rendered by the browser. We can use Style Sheets to change these at any time, but each tag has a default behavior and its important to understand how they will work when you are describing your page when writing the initial markup. Got that? # Three Types There are a lot, but we are going to concern ourselves with three main display styles. # Block Block level elements are big blocks, just like they sound. They are generally used to divide content, because by default block level elements begin on new lines. Block-level elements may contain inline elements and other block-level elements. Inherent in this structural distinction is the idea that block elements create "larger" structures than inline elements. An example is a "p" tag, that sections off the whole paragraph, and forces the next paragraph tag to a new line. Check out the notes below for a link to a list of all the block level tags in HTML. [https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/HTML/Block-level_elements] # Inline Inline elements may contain only data and other inline elements. Where block level elements are larger structures that contain all kinds a crap. By default, inline elements do not begin with new line when rendered by the browser. An example of this would be to wrap some words in your paragraph in an "a" tag. the words become a link, but the link does not start a new line in the paragraph, or disrupt the flow of content. It just sits inline in the paragraph. When we get to styling our document, we will note that inline elements cannot take width, height, margin and padding styles. For more on that check out this link [http://www.maxdesign.com.au/articles/inline/] # Inline-block This is the strange, but handy one. An inline block is placed inline (ie. on the same line as adjacent content), but it behaves as a block. So it can take those margins and paddings and dimensions. The only tags that default to inline-block are images and buttons. But with css, later on we will see that we can change any element to inline-block if we want to. Check out the link below for more information on inline-block [http://www.impressivewebs.com/inline-block/] # Display None & Table and others... There are other default display types that all have their little display behavior quirks; like display:table, or display:none. And there are a lot of interesting display methods on the horizon in css3, but today we wanted to just talk about how the html tags cary certain display types by default.

jquery show hide password

11:01
Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?sort=dd&view=1 Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/05/jquery-show-hide-password.html In this video we will discuss how to toggle password visibility using show / hide password checkbox. Here is what we want to achieve 1. When Show password checkbox IS NOT CHECKED, the password should be masked 2. When Show password checkbox IS CHECKED, the password should be in clear text and visible to the user One of the simplest ways of achieving this is by changing the type attribute of the password field depending on the checked status of Show password checkbox 1. If the Show password checkbox is CHECKED change the type to text 2. If the Show password checkbox is NOT CHECKED change the type to password Replace < with LESSTHAN symbol and > with GREATERTHAN symbol The following is the HTML and jQuery code <html> <head> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('#cbShowPassword').click(function () { $('#txtPassword').attr('type', $(this).is(':checked') ? 'text' : 'password'); }); }); </script> </head> <body style="font-family:Arial"> Password : <input type="password" id="txtPassword" /> <input type="checkbox" id="cbShowPassword" />Show password </body> </html> The problem with the above approach is that it does not work in IE 8 and earlier versions. This is because with IE8 and earlier versions the type attribute of input elements cannot be changed once set. The following code works in all browsers including IE8 and earlier versions. When Show password checkbox is clicked 1. Retrieve the value the from the password textbox and store it in a variable for later use. 2. Delete the password input filed. 3. If the "Show password" checkbox is CHECKED, then add a new input filed of type text, else add a new input filed of password. In both the cases set the value attribute of the input element = the variable created in Step 1. <html> <head> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('#cbShowPassword').click(function () { var currentPassowrdFiled = $('#txtPassword'); var currentPassword = currentPassowrdFiled.val(); currentPassowrdFiled.remove(); if ($(this).is(':checked')) { $(this).before('<input type="text" id="txtPassword" value="' + currentPassword + '">'); } else { $(this).before('<input type="password" id="txtPassword" value="' + currentPassword + '">'); } }); }); </script> </head> <body style="font-family:Arial"> Password : <input type="password" id="txtPassword" /> <input type="checkbox" id="cbShowPassword" />Show password </body> </html>

How to check if JavaScript is enabled

09:17
Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/02/how-to-check-if-javascript-is-enabled.html In this video we will discuss how to check if JavaScript is enabled or disabled. Let us understand this with an example. We have a page that captures Name and Gender. Both fields are required. The page relies on JavaScript being enabled for performing validation. We should always have server side validation irrespective of whether we have client side validation or not. It is not a good practice to rely just on client side validation, but for the purpose of this demo, let us say we only have client side validation. If JavaScript is enabled then we want to display the Name and Gender elements and the user can continue to use the application. If JavaScript is disabled then we want to hide the Name and Gender elements and we want to display the following message. It seems that you have disabled JavaScript. Please enable JavaScript. The easiest way to detect if JavaScript is enabled is by using noscript tag. The content inside the [noscript] element will be displayed only if scripts are not supported, or are disabled in the user's browser. [noscript] [style type="text/css"] .rootDiv { display: none; } [/style] [h1]It seems that you have disabled JavaScript. Please enable JavaScript.[/h1] [/noscript] [div id="rootElement" class="rootDiv"] [table border="1"] [tr] [td] Name [/td] [td] [input id="txtName" type="text" onfocus="validateIfEmpty('txtName')" onblur="validateIfEmpty('txtName')" onkeyup="validateIfEmpty('txtName')" /] [/td] [/tr] [tr] [td] Gender [/td] [td] [input id="txtGender" type="text" onfocus="validateIfEmpty('txtGender')" onblur="validateIfEmpty('txtGender')" onkeyup="validateIfEmpty('txtGender')" /] [/td] [/tr] [/table] [/div] [script type="text/javascript"] function validateIfEmpty(control) { var controlToValidate = document.getElementById(control); if (controlToValidate.value == "") { controlToValidate.style.background = "red"; } else { controlToValidate.style.background = "white"; } } [/script]

Part 94 Providing visual feedback using LoadingElementId AjaxOption

06:22
Link for code samples used in the demo http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2013/09/part-94-providing-visual-feedback-using.html Link for csharp, asp.net, ado.net, dotnet basics, mvc and sql server video tutorial playlists http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists This is continuation to Part 93, Please watch Part 93 from the ASP.NET MVC tutorial before proceeding with this video. One problem with partial page updates is that, they donot provide any visual feedback if the request is taking a long time to process. With full page postbacks, we don't have this problem, because the entire page is posted to the server and hence the user knows something is happening. For example, let's say a request in our ajax enabled application takes 10 seconds to complete. When the user clicks the button and if we don't provide him with any visual feedback that the request is being processed, the user may think the website is not working and he may click the button again. So, it is very important that we provide some visual feedback. To achieve this here are the steps. Step 1: Right click on the project name in solution explorer, and a folder with name = Images. Copy and paste the animated GIF image, in the Images folder. Please note: You can create animated GIF images using the following website. http://spiffygif.com/ Step 2: Place the following DIV tag on the view, where you want the image to show up when request is still being processed. [div id="divloading" style="display:none;"] [img src="~/Images/spinner.gif"/] [/div] Step 3: Modify the Ajax.ActionLink() html helper method on the view as shown below. Notice that, we have set LoadingElementId = "divloading" @Ajax.ActionLink("All", "All", new AjaxOptions { HttpMethod = "GET", UpdateTargetId = "divStudents", InsertionMode = InsertionMode.Replace, LoadingElementId = "divloading" }) Step 4: The controller action method in our example, completes in no time. So the image never shows up. To introduce some latency include, System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(1000); statement in the controller action method. The duration for the sleep method is in milliseconds. We have specified 1000 mill-seconds, so the thread is going to sleep for 1 second. public PartialViewResult All() { System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(1000); List[Student] model = db.Students.ToList(); return PartialView("_Student", model); } Now run the application and notice that image shows up, while the request is still being processed. When request processing completes and when the response is received, the loading image disappears and the UI is automatically updated, with the data received.

In this video, we will see how to enable dates after a specific date using minDate option and how to enable dates before a specific date using maxDate option. These options are really useful when you have to enable or disable consecutive dates in jQuery UI Datepicker. You can set the value of minDate and maxDate in the form of a Date object, number or string. If you set the value of minDate to new Date(2015, 0, 5), then dates till 5th January 2015 will be disabled. In other words, only dates from 5th January 2015 will be selectable or clickable. If you set the value of minDate to -2, then only dates from day before yesterday (2 days before today) will be enabled. If you set the value of minDate to -1m (y for year, m for month, w for week and d for day), only dates from one month before will be selectable. If you set the value of minDate to 0, only dates from current day (today) will be enabled. Similar is the case with maxDate.
