14. Witchcraft and Magic

46:35
Early Modern England: Politics, Religion, and Society under the Tudors and Stuarts (HIST 251) In this lecture, Professor Wrightson discusses witchcraft and magic. He begins with the context of magic beliefs in this period, introducing the 'cunning folk' who had reputations as healers and were often consulted. He then considers the specific problem of witchcraft, the use of magic to do harm, and its identification by the late medieval church as a form of anti-Christian cult. He examines the distinctive nature of both witchcraft beliefs and the history of witchcraft prosecution in England (as compared with both Scotland and continental Europe), outlining the typical circumstances of a witchcraft accusation and what these might suggest about the rise and fall of concern with witchcraft. Finally he considers a number of unresolved problems in the history of witchcraft in England: the nature of the links between gender and witchcraft; the reasons behind the passage of the statutes defining witchcraft as a crime; and the exceptionally large number of trials conducted in the county of Essex. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Magic 08:56 - Chapter 2. Differences between Witchcraft in England and in Europe 19:26 - Chapter 3. Trials in England 35:05 - Chapter 4. Witchraft Statutes in Essex Complete course materials are available at the Open Yale Courses website: http://open.yale.edu/courses This course was recorded in Fall 2009.

25 Reasons You’ll Be Glad You Don’t Live In Medieval Times

09:27
Many contemporary historians and schoolbooks portray the Middle Ages as a time of poverty, backwardness, and religious arbitrariness, from which the people were freed only by the Renaissance and later the Industrial Revolution. On the other hand, there have been a few historians who paint a much different picture and insist that the Middle Ages weren't as bad as some claim, and that in some ways they were better than most other historical periods. Here are 25 facts about this “dark” and controversial era that will help you make up your mind concerning which category you belong to: the lovers or the haters of Medieval times. 19 Signs You’d Be Called a Witch in the Middle Ages

11:54
Who was thought to be a witch in the Middle Ages? If you're an adult independent woman and don't have any additional financial support, this would’ve qualified you as a witch several centuries ago. But it was considered a bad sign for both men and women to be too poor. Homeless people and beggars were often accused of being witches. Anybody who didn't like people wandering around the neighborhood asking for food and money could rat them out to the authorities as witches. So has it ever come to your mind that you’d make a great witch? Let's check whether people in the 17th century would’ve agreed with you. These signs will show if your impersonation of Maleficent is justifiable! TIMESTAMPS: You're a female 0:51 You’re a woman and you’re too rich for your own good 1:33 You’re too poor 2:12 You’re too young 2:38 You’re too old 3:10 You’re a married woman with too many kids 3:33 You’re a married woman with no kids 4:06 You have more than one female friend 4:36 You’re a woman who has argued with a friend or a neighbor 5:02 You have a rebellious character 5:26 You can swim 5:57 You’re a married woman having an affair 6:33 You try to predict your future husband's identity 6:57 You’re a midwife 7:28 You have a habit of talking to yourself 8:01 You aren't good at public speaking 8:41 Milk or butter has gone bad in your fridge 9:41 You have a pet 10:12 You have a mole or birthmark 10:50 #middleages witchcraft #darkages Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - During the infamous witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts, which lasted from 1692 to 1693, 14 women and only 5 men were convicted for engaging in witchcraft. - Very young girls were often believed to be witches. A respectable wise age couldn't protect a woman either. Quite the contrary, older women, whether they were married or not, were extremely vulnerable to accusations. - According to popular opinion back then, only dark magic could provide a woman with an extremely fertile womb. - If you were a married woman but had too few kids or no children at all, those around you believed that you had been cursed with infertility. - If you were a woman who had several female friends and you gathered together without a male presence, you could be suspected of witchcraft. - Witch hunters held such power in the community and were feared so much that many people used it to their advantage and accused their enemies of witchery. - Several centuries ago, people believed that only witches could swim. That's why women suspected of witchery were lowered into water. - If her adultery was caught, there was no way at all to avoid being convicted as a witch. She had no chances of survival in this case. - Unfortunately, midwives who helped other women during pregnancy and labor were considered witches in the 17th century. Authorities believed that their knowledge of herbs and ancient medicine was connected with evil forces. - If you occasionally mutter something to yourself, be it a shopping list or an earworm, you must be a witch! At least, that's what people in the 17th century believed. - In those days, almost any pet was considered a “familiar.” And if you had a familiar in its animal form, it was a sure sign that you were a witch. - Moles and birthmarks were seen as sure signs that a woman was marked and practiced witchcraft. How far back in time could you go and still understand English?

02:37
If you had a time machine, how far back could you go and still understand English? AT what point in history would you not be able to understand the English language? If you went back in time to the 1800's and 1700's, you'd probably still be okay. This except is from the book 'Robinson Crusoe', in 1719: "I, poor miserable Robinson Crusoe, being shipwrecked during a dreadful storm in the offing, came on shore on this dismal, unfortunate island, which I called “The Island of Despair” That's fairly easy to understand, but you might struggle with old slang words like 'batty fang' and 'kickerapoo'. batty fang - a beating kickerapoo - dead land pirates - highway robbers gutfoundered - very hungry whapper - a big lie Nitsqueeger - Hairdresser Xantippe - an ill tempered wife Abbess - a nun Thornback - a spinster Barber-monger - a vain man Bleater - someone who complains a lot Brabble - to quarrel loudly Crapulous - the feeling of being too full Hugger-mugger - secretly Lettice-cap - a medical device like a hair net Pigarlik - a bald head Petty fogger - a dodgy lawyer Mumpsimus - the act of sticking to old mistaken beliefs about language and customs simply out of habit And now, your 'birthday suit' actually is a suit that you wear on your birthday. The 1600s is the time of Shakespeare. "Thy natural magic and dire property, On wholesome life usurp immediately." Here, Lucianus talking about the natural magic of poison. and how using it to kill the king will usurp the throne. Trickier to follow, but not everyone spoke like that. You would hear lots of words you didn't understand though. The bigger problem for you now is the pronunciation. The sound of the vowels has changed, and the accent is becoming much harder to understand. For example, "tea" is pronounced "tay", and "gone" is pronounced "goan". In the 1500s people essentially speak like the Bible. "Now therefore thus saith the Lord, Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die." KJV 2 Kings 1:4 There are also hundreds of words that don't mean a thing to you. Before about 1400 AD, you'd hear Middle English, and you would hardly understand anything, written or spoken. "Whan that Aprill, with his shoures soote The droghte of March hath perced to the roote And bathed every veyne in swich licour, Of which vertu engendred is the flour;" The Canterbury Tales, 1389 If you went all the way back to one 1000 AD, you'd hear Old English: Lord's Prayer Fæder ure þu þe eart on heofonum; Si þin nama gehalgod to becume þin rice gewurþe ðin willa on eorðan swa swa on heofonum. The sacred herb was always seen by Shamans and the ancients as a gift from the Creator God(s) of life on Earth. Like food nourishes the body, Cannabis provides nourishment for the mind and works it’s magic with the soul. Also explored in this documentary is the American relationship with hemp, including it’s ban during the 1920?s and the various uses of the hemp plant. Cannabis Sativa is an annual plant in the Cannabaceae family. It is a herb that has been used throughout recorded history by humans as a source of fiber, for its seed oil, as food, as medicine and for spiritual purposes. Different parts of the plant have different uses, and different varieties are cultivated in different ways and harvested at different times, depending on the purpose for which it is grown. Cannabis or Ganja is associated with Shiva, who is popularly believed to like the hemp plant.

Witchcraft, magic, psychedelic drugs and medieval pharmacopeia

56:57
Thomas Hatsis is an historian of witchcraft, magic, Western religions, contemporary psychedelia, entheogens, and medieval pharmacopeia. In the medieval period preparations with hallucinogenic herbs were part of the practice of veneficium, or poison magic. This collection of magical arts used poisons, herbs, and rituals to bewitch, heal, prophesy, infect, and murder. In the form of psyche-magical ointments, poison magic could trigger powerful hallucinations and surrealistic dreams that enabled direct experience of the Divine. Smeared on the skin, these entheogenic ointments were said to enable witches to commune with various local goddesses, bastardized by the Church as trips to the Sabbat--clandestine meetings with Satan to learn magic and participate in demonic orgies. Examining trial records and the pharmacopoeia of witches, alchemists, folk healers, and heretics of the 15th century, Thomas Hatsis details how a range of ideas from folk drugs to ecclesiastical fears over medicine women merged to form the classical “witch” stereotype and what history has called the “witches’ ointment.” He shares dozens of psychoactive formulas and recipes gleaned from rare manuscripts from university collections from all over the world as well as the practices and magical incantations necessary for their preparation. He explores the connections between witches’ ointments and spells for shape shifting, spirit travel, and bewitching magic. He examines the practices of some Renaissance magicians, who inhaled powerful drugs to communicate with spirits, and of Italian folk-witches, such as Matteuccia di Francisco, who used hallucinogenic drugs in her love potions and herbal preparations, and Finicella, who used drug ointments to imagine herself transformed into a cat. Exploring the untold history of the witches’ ointment and medieval hallucinogen use, Hatsis reveals how the Church transformed folk drug practices, specifically entheogenic ones, into satanic experiences. http://arspsychedelia.com/ PLEASE CLICK HERE TO SUBSCRIBE FOR NEW WEEKLY SHOWS Our shows include subjects that include How To, Alternative Medicine & Health, Ancient World, Artwork, Comics & Multimedia, Creatures, Myths & Legends, Current Events/Economy, Extraterrestrial, Miscellaneous, Mysteries & Anomalies, Nature, Environment & Earth Changes, Pop Culture, Prophecy & Predictions, Psychology & Mind, Science, Space & Technology, Spirituality & Occult, Supernatural & Paranormal, The Moore Show, UFOs & Aerial Phenomena, Weird & Bizarre.

5 HORRIFYING Realities Of Daily Life In Historical Times

08:24
History has amazing highlights and the civilizations that helped build the world we know of today have a lot to take credit for. While being a badass knight might sound epic to you or being one of Socrates’ valued students is a high honor, it’s the things that happen in between the knightly duties or the lessons at school that you should take heavily into consideration. Daily life in the Medieval Ages isn’t as glammed up to be and the things we have read in our school’s history books have been, pretty much, filtered down to suit the taste of a more wholesome audience. Rimworld Skyrim | The Gray Nords | Steinar Clan Colony Episode 1 | Medieval Times and 30+ Mods

33:32
Inspired by AstartesGaming, we're starting a Rimworld Skyrim colony. The Gray Nords are a faction of Nords I've made up from the Elder Scrolls Skyrim world, who are in search of finding their own land and leaving their own legacy for future generations to behold. We're starting off with humble beginnings, but I'm confident that these pawns can work pretty hard. Though I'm by no means an expert in castle-building, I've tried to supply what little I know about medieval architecture. Any tips/critiques are welcome, as always. Mod List (mostly what AstartesGaming uses for this, with a few additions/changes): Hugslib Jecstools EdB Prepare Carefully Rimsenal - Rimhair Giddy-Up! What if the Undead REALLY Existed in The Middle Ages?

13:42
Head to https://spons.org/metatwd on your iPhone or Android to install The Walking Dead: Road to Survival, it's free and it helps the channel out! This video is a support and creation aid concept video for D&D masters and fantasy novel writers who wish to have a more realistic depiction of the undead in their creations and should be considered as food for thought. We will consider the cultural, economic and social impact such new reality would have in a Medieval Kingdom. Looking forward to your comments noble ones!! Metatron The undead are beings in mythology, legend, or fiction that are deceased but behave as if they were alive. The undead may be incorporeal like ghosts, or corporeal like vampires and zombies. The undead are featured in the belief systems of most cultures, and appear in many works of fantasy and horror fiction. There are many types of undead in mythology, some of them are very powerful like vampires and lich, others are nothing more than mindless minions like skeletons and zombies. Some of them may roam free in the world, others are sometimes tied to a specific place, like some ghosts or poltergeist. In classic myths undead almost always roam at night when they are more powerful. They are resistant to some damage source but usually they can be hurt and killed easily with some kind of magic or hittin them in specific location like the head or heart. They are used as main villains in many novels or Dungeons and Dragons campaigns. According to one theory, the common root of the Celtic languages, a language known as Proto-Celtic, arose in the Late Bronze Age Urnfield culture of Central Europe, which flourished from around 1200 BC. In addition, according to a theory proposed in the 19th century, the first Celtic people in central Europe were the people of the Iron Age Hallstatt culture (c. 800–450 BC) named for the rich grave finds in Hallstatt, Austria. Thus this area is sometimes called the 'Celtic homeland'. By the later La Tène period (c. 450 BC up to the Roman conquest), this Celtic culture was supposed to have expanded by diffusion or migrationto the British Isles (Insular Celts), France and The Low Countries (Gauls), Bohemia, Poland and much of Central Europe, the Iberian Peninsula (Celtiberians, Celtici, Lusitanians and Gallaeci) and northern Italy(Golaseccans and Cisalpine Gauls) and, following the Gallic invasion of the Balkans in 279 BC, as far east as central Anatolia (Galatians). The earliest undisputed direct examples of a Celtic language are the Lepontic inscriptions, beginning in the 6th century BC. Continental Celtic languages are attested almost exclusively through inscriptions and place-names. Insular Celtic is attested beginning around the 4th century AD through Ogham inscriptions, although it was clearly being spoken much earlier. Celtic literary tradition begins with Old Irish texts around the 8th century. Coherent texts of Early Irish literature, such as the Táin Bó Cúailnge (The Cattle Raid of Cooley), survive in 12th-century recensions.By the mid 1st millennium AD, with the expansion of the Roman Empire and the Great Migrations (Migration Period) of Germanic peoples, Celtic culture and Insular Celtic had become restricted to Ireland, the western and northern parts of Great Britain (Wales, Scotland, and Cornwall), the Isle of Man, and Brittany. Between the 5th and 8th centuries, the Celtic-speaking communities in these Atlantic regions emerged as a reasonably cohesive cultural entity. They had a common linguistic, religious, and artistic heritage that distinguished them from the culture of the surrounding polities. By the 6th century, however, theContinental Celtic languages were no longer in wide use.Insular Celtic culture diversified into that of the Gaels (Irish, Scottish and Manx) and the Brythonic Celts (Welsh, Cornish, and Bretons) of the medieval and modern periods. A modern "Celtic identity" was constructed as part of the Romanticist Celtic Revival in Great Britain, Ireland, and other European territories, such as Portugal and Spanish Galicia. Today, Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, and Breton are still spoken in parts of their historical territories, and Cornish and Manx are undergoing a revival. ¨** Medieval music / Celtic song / Middle Ages / Omnia is a self-described "neoceltic pagan folk" band based in The Netherlands and whose members over the years have had Irish, Dutch, Cornish, Belgian and Persian backgrounds. Their music takes on the form of various cultural routes, from places around the world such as Ireland, England, Cornwall and Persia. They sing in English, Irish, Breton, Finnish, German, Dutch, Swedish, Latin and Hindi and play Celtic harp, mouth harp, hurdy gurdy, bodhrán, guitar, bouzouki, didgeridoo, flutes of all kinds, bagpipes, various drums and percussion instruments.
