14. Witchcraft and Magic

46:35
Early Modern England: Politics, Religion, and Society under the Tudors and Stuarts (HIST 251) In this lecture, Professor Wrightson discusses witchcraft and magic. He begins with the context of magic beliefs in this period, introducing the 'cunning folk' who had reputations as healers and were often consulted. He then considers the specific problem of witchcraft, the use of magic to do harm, and its identification by the late medieval church as a form of anti-Christian cult. He examines the distinctive nature of both witchcraft beliefs and the history of witchcraft prosecution in England (as compared with both Scotland and continental Europe), outlining the typical circumstances of a witchcraft accusation and what these might suggest about the rise and fall of concern with witchcraft. Finally he considers a number of unresolved problems in the history of witchcraft in England: the nature of the links between gender and witchcraft; the reasons behind the passage of the statutes defining witchcraft as a crime; and the exceptionally large number of trials conducted in the county of Essex. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Magic 08:56 - Chapter 2. Differences between Witchcraft in England and in Europe 19:26 - Chapter 3. Trials in England 35:05 - Chapter 4. 25 Reasons You’ll Be Glad You Don’t Live In Medieval Times

09:27
Many contemporary historians and schoolbooks portray the Middle Ages as a time of poverty, backwardness, and religious arbitrariness, from which the people were freed only by the Renaissance and later the Industrial Revolution. On the other hand, there have been a few historians who paint a much different picture and insist that the Middle Ages weren't as bad as some claim, and that in some ways they were better than most other historical periods. Here are 25 facts about this “dark” and controversial era that will help you make up your mind concerning which category you belong to: the lovers or the haters of Medieval times. PROOF MAGIC EXISTED IN MEDIEVAL TIMES

In this video I present tangible evidence that magic existed in medieval times. King Arthur, Merlin, and alchemy as well as many other factors support my findings. Medieval magic and alchemy are documented and more research must be done.

Rimworld Skyrim | The Gray Nords | Steinar Clan Colony Episode 1 | Medieval Times and 30+ Mods

Inspired by AstartesGaming, we're starting a Rimworld Skyrim colony. The Gray Nords are a faction of Nords I've made up from the Elder Scrolls Skyrim world, who are in search of finding their own land and leaving their own legacy for future generations to behold. We're starting off with humble beginnings, but I'm confident that these pawns can work pretty hard. Though I'm by no means an expert in castle-building, I've tried to supply what little I know about medieval architecture. Any tips/critiques are welcome, as always. How far back in time could you go and still understand English?

02:37
If you had a time machine, how far back could you go and still understand English? AT what point in history would you not be able to understand the English language? If you went back in time to the 1800's and 1700's, you'd probably still be okay. This except is from the book 'Robinson Crusoe', in 1719: "I, poor miserable Robinson Crusoe, being shipwrecked during a dreadful storm in the offing, came on shore on this dismal, unfortunate island, which I called “The Island of Despair” That's fairly easy to understand, but you might struggle with old slang words like 'batty fang' and 'kickerapoo'. batty fang - a beating kickerapoo - dead land pirates - highway robbers gutfoundered - very hungry whapper - a big lie Nitsqueeger - Hairdresser Xantippe - an ill tempered wife Abbess - a nun Thornback - a spinster Barber-monger - a vain man Bleater - someone who complains a lot Brabble - to quarrel loudly Crapulous - the feeling of being too full Hugger-mugger - secretly Lettice-cap - a medical device like a hair net Pigarlik - a bald head Petty fogger - a dodgy lawyer Mumpsimus - the act of sticking to old mistaken beliefs about language and customs simply out of habit And now, your 'birthday suit' actually is a suit that you wear on your birthday. The 1600s is the time of Shakespeare. "Thy natural magic and dire property, On wholesome life usurp immediately." Here, Lucianus talking about the natural magic of poison. and how using it to kill the king will usurp the throne. Trickier to follow, but not everyone spoke like that. You would hear lots of words you didn't understand though. The bigger problem for you now is the pronunciation. The sound of the vowels has changed, and the accent is becoming much harder to understand. For example, "tea" is pronounced "tay", and "gone" is pronounced "goan". In the 1500s people essentially speak like the Bible. "Now therefore thus saith the Lord, Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up, but shalt surely die." KJV 2 Kings 1:4 There are also hundreds of words that don't mean a thing to you. Before about 1400 AD, you'd hear Middle English, and you would hardly understand anything, written or spoken. "Whan that Aprill, with his shoures soote The droghte of March hath perced to the roote And bathed every veyne in swich licour, Of which vertu engendred is the flour;" The Canterbury Tales, 1389 If you went all the way back to one 1000 AD, you'd hear Old English: Lord's Prayer Fæder ure þu þe eart on heofonum; Si þin nama gehalgod to becume þin rice gewurþe ðin willa on eorðan swa swa on heofonum. Good luck explaining that you need 'one point twenty-one Jigawatts' to get home! Witchcraft, magic, psychedelic drugs and medieval pharmacopeia

56:57
Thomas Hatsis is an historian of witchcraft, magic, Western religions, contemporary psychedelia, entheogens, and medieval pharmacopeia. In the medieval period preparations with hallucinogenic herbs were part of the practice of veneficium, or poison magic. This collection of magical arts used poisons, herbs, and rituals to bewitch, heal, prophesy, infect, and murder. In the form of psyche-magical ointments, poison magic could trigger powerful hallucinations and surrealistic dreams that enabled direct experience of the Divine. Smeared on the skin, these entheogenic ointments were said to enable witches to commune with various local goddesses, bastardized by the Church as trips to the Sabbat--clandestine meetings with Satan to learn magic and participate in demonic orgies. Examining trial records and the pharmacopoeia of witches, alchemists, folk healers, and heretics of the 15th century, Thomas Hatsis details how a range of ideas from folk drugs to ecclesiastical fears over medicine women merged to form the classical “witch” stereotype and what history has called the “witches’ ointment.” He shares dozens of psychoactive formulas and recipes gleaned from rare manuscripts from university collections from all over the world as well as the practices and magical incantations necessary for their preparation. He explores the connections between witches’ ointments and spells for shape shifting, spirit travel, and bewitching magic. He examines the practices of some Renaissance magicians, who inhaled powerful drugs to communicate with spirits, and of Italian folk-witches, such as Matteuccia di Francisco, who used hallucinogenic drugs in her love potions and herbal preparations, and Finicella, who used drug ointments to imagine herself transformed into a cat. Exploring the untold history of the witches’ ointment and medieval hallucinogen use, Hatsis reveals how the Church transformed folk drug practices, specifically entheogenic ones, into satanic experiences. http://arspsychedelia.com/ PLEASE CLICK HERE TO SUBSCRIBE FOR NEW WEEKLY SHOWS Our shows include subjects that include How To, Alternative Medicine & Health, Ancient World, Artwork, Comics & Multimedia, Creatures, Myths & Legends, Current Events/Economy, Extraterrestrial, Miscellaneous, Mysteries & Anomalies, Nature, Environment & Earth Changes, Pop Culture, Prophecy & Predictions, Psychology & Mind, Science, Space & Technology, Spirituality & Occult, Supernatural & Paranormal, The Moore Show, UFOs & Aerial Phenomena, Weird & Bizarre.

According to one theory, the common root of the Celtic languages, a language known as Proto-Celtic, arose in the Late Bronze Age Urnfield culture of Central Europe, which flourished from around 1200 BC. In addition, according to a theory proposed in the 19th century, the first Celtic people in central Europe were the people of the Iron Age Hallstatt culture (c. 800–450 BC) named for the rich grave finds in Hallstatt, Austria. Thus this area is sometimes called the 'Celtic homeland'. By the later La Tène period (c. 450 BC up to the Roman conquest), this Celtic culture was supposed to have expanded by diffusion or migrationto the British Isles (Insular Celts), France and The Low Countries (Gauls), Bohemia, Poland and much of Central Europe, the Iberian Peninsula (Celtiberians, Celtici, Lusitanians and Gallaeci) and northern Italy(Golaseccans and Cisalpine Gauls) and, following the Gallic invasion of the Balkans in 279 BC, as far east as central Anatolia (Galatians). The earliest undisputed direct examples of a Celtic language are the Lepontic inscriptions, beginning in the 6th century BC. Continental Celtic languages are attested almost exclusively through inscriptions and place-names. Insular Celtic is attested beginning around the 4th century AD through Ogham inscriptions, although it was clearly being spoken much earlier. Celtic literary tradition begins with Old Irish texts around the 8th century. Coherent texts of Early Irish literature, such as the Táin Bó Cúailnge (The Cattle Raid of Cooley), survive in 12th-century recensions.By the mid 1st millennium AD, with the expansion of the Roman Empire and the Great Migrations (Migration Period) of Germanic peoples, Celtic culture and Insular Celtic had become restricted to Ireland, the western and northern parts of Great Britain (Wales, Scotland, and Cornwall), the Isle of Man, and Brittany. Between the 5th and 8th centuries, the Celtic-speaking communities in these Atlantic regions emerged as a reasonably cohesive cultural entity. They had a common linguistic, religious, and artistic heritage that distinguished them from the culture of the surrounding polities. By the 6th century, however, theContinental Celtic languages were no longer in wide use.Insular Celtic culture diversified into that of the Gaels (Irish, Scottish and Manx) and the Brythonic Celts (Welsh, Cornish, and Bretons) of the medieval and modern periods. A modern "Celtic identity" was constructed as part of the Romanticist Celtic Revival in Great Britain, Ireland, and other European territories, such as Portugal and Spanish Galicia. Today, Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, and Breton are still spoken in parts of their historical territories, and Cornish and Manx are undergoing a revival. ¨** Medieval music / Celtic song / Middle Ages / Omnia is a self-described "neoceltic pagan folk" band based in The Netherlands and whose members over the years have had Irish, Dutch, Cornish, Belgian and Persian backgrounds. Witches - Incredible History Documentary

46:26
Witches - Incredible History Documentary The witch, sorceress, enchantress, the devil's consort--she has haunted the human consciousness and captured our imagination for thousands of years. The fear of the witch is woven deep within our psyche, but, surprisingly, there was a time when the witch was not a source of evil. Known for her ability to harness the hidden powers of nature herself--she was the caster of magical spells and the brewer of healing potions. What are her secret powers? And why did they become so feared and despised? Why would the witch be hunted down so mercilessly by the Inquisitor during the witch trials of Europe's Middle Ages and in the Puritan heartland of Salem, Massachusetts? The reasons lie buried deep in the ancient past. Join us on ANCIENT MYSTERIES and learn the surprising answers to the mystery of the witch.

☩ Medieval Times ☩

03:47
Aaawwww finally I can upload this!! *____* This crossover took me months to finish and in the last weeks it has been really difficult to work on my crossovers or mep parts. I hope this is good enough to apologize ♥ Thank you so much for your support! I LOVE YOOOU!!! :D . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . storyline ☩ Madame Tremaine is a bourgeois woman who has three children: Kayley, Proteus and Odette. Kayley is the youngest daugther and the "rebel one". She is anything but a lady, and she helps Esmeralda (a healer) to take care of leprous people. Due to family interests, John Rolfe comes to the city to marry Odette. Thus, the wealth of both families could become one. However, Rolfe and Kayley start falling in love, and Madame Tremaine, in order to protect her interestes, signs a deal with Rolfe's family. That way, the bond between John and Odette cannot be broken. She couldn't risk Rolfe to choose Kayley - because she isn't the "perfect daughter" and for sure wouldn't follow Madame Tremaine's rules. The wedding takes place, but Kayley and Rolfe can't hide what they feel for each other... During these events, Madame Tremaine could not imagine her eldest son, Proteus, would fall in love with Esmeralda. Later, Madame Tremaine understands that Aladdin doesn't approve their "relationship" as well and makes a deal with him (what were agreed it is up to your imagination). - Al is in love with Esme - This crossover is inspired in the medieval stories - there are a lot of greed and intrigue involved. Furthermore, Esme is considered a witch because she cures people - that's why Madame Tremaine managed to condemn her. There are a lot of things not explicit in this crossover, but that's the magic... ♥ There is no fixed plot and you can imagine a lot of things :D Any doubt feel free to ask! ♥ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ☩ John Rolfe and Kayley - couple requested by emmactress1894 ♥ I am sorry it took so long :''( I hope you like the way I use them - They really are lovely together! :D ☩ I was inspired by NightGlowProductions' crossover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMF5t1NF_d0 (SHE'S WONDERFUL!!!) I had to use that song!! :D . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . song ☩ you lift me up by the afters movies ☩ sinbad - legend of the seven seas; pocahontas 2; hunchback of notredame; quest for camelot; cinderella (1, 2); swan princess; princess mnonoke; aladdin; thumbelina programs ☩ adobe after effects CS5.5; sony vegas pro 11; photoshop CS5 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
