Who names drugs? Why all the funny names? A number of months ago, we did an episode on how a drug comes to market with the help of out HCT intern, pharmD student Rachel Hoffman. She also helped us out with our episode on Flibanserin. We get a lot of questions from you about drugs. What's the difference between a generic and name brand drug? How do people feel about them? What's the difference with biologics? With her help, we're going to tackle those in the upcoming weeks. Let's start at the beginning. What's in a name? That which we call a drug. By any other name would be so . . . effective? Brand name and generic drugs: are there any differences? Who regulates them? And what's with all the names anyway? That's the topic of today's HealthCare Triage. Generic drugs can be introduced after the patent for the brand-name runs out. So, what's the difference between brand-name and generic drugs? Heather Brown answers this Good Question (2:34). WCCO 4 News At 10 – Aug. 29, 2016

Why are generic drugs cheaper? | By Ishan [Hindi] For developing a formula of a branded drug it requires lots of investments for research and development. In order to get that investments back they will charge more within that patent time, once the patent time is over any one can produce that medicine with same formula. So the cost of that medicine includes all costs incurred to develop the drug and benefits of the manufacturer. When it comes to Generic drug all that R&D costs will not be there so the generic drugs are cheaper. In India very few people are aware of this generic medicines, because of which people are spending more money on their medicines. That’s why recently Indian Government and The Medical Council of India (MCI) has mandated that generic names of drugs would have to be mentioned along with the brands in prescriptions to patients because there are so many medicines which are available in generics. Indian government is also encouraging the use of generic medicines by establishing some Jan Aushadhi Medical Stores in India and nowadays large number of retail generic outlets are appearing in the market and also there are some players who are selling generic medicines online like genericwala. I have switched over to buying generic medicines rather than the branded medicines and i usually order it online because it is cheaper and convenient for me. Are generic medicines just as good as the brand? In theory, yes generic medications are just as good when it comes to clinical effect and safety. But for some medications you can see differences in how they work for you. When a new drug comes to the market, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gives the drug company a exclusive rights to produce and market the drug until their patent runs out. In order to do this, the new company has to show the FDA that their version of the drug is bioequivalent to the original. There’s a very complex definition of bioequivalence on the Code of Federal Regulations website. https://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?SID=e835732c9ae36c33e32f4731c2e1504e&mc=true&node=se21.5.314_13&rgn=div8 Here’s a simplified version: a generic drug is bioequivalent if there is no significant difference in the way the active ingredient of the drug becomes available in your body if you take it at the same dose as the original. A significant difference is defined by bioequivalence limits which the FDA sets as 80% - 125%. These percentages refer to the range of the peak concentration of the drug and how much is absorbed over time. Excipients are the inactive ingredients that are not held to the standard of bioequivalence. These inactive ingredients can make a difference in side effects and how the medication works for you. Some examples of excipients: Fillers Binders Coating – enteric coating Disintigrants Sweetners Vehicle – liquid formulation, example mineral oil Disclaimer: All of the information on this channel is for educational purposes and not intended to be specific/personal medical advice from me to you. Hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars are being wasted on name-brand drugs, according to a study by ProPublica. Experts claim that there is very little difference between generic drugs and name-brand drugs, adding that most of the doctors who are prescribing name-brand drugs are financially linked to the companies that make the drugs. Lissette Padilla and Tabetha Wallace discuss the impact that could be made in saving taxpayer dollars if doctors start prescribing generic drugs, in this clip from the Lip News. If you suffer a side effect from your medication, if you're taking a generic drug, you can't file a lawsuit for personal injury. Only the name brand drug company has to monitor safety and update warnings. The generic drug companies only have to be the same as the name brand drug company, and therefore they have no responsibility to consumers. About 80% of the drugs sold in the US are generic, so currently, the drug manufacturers for 80% of the US are not under requirement to look out for patient safety and update their warnings. However, the FDA is looking at passing new regulations that would change the standards for generic companies. This has been the Legal Minute, brought to you by BurgSimpson - Good Lawyers.
