Baltic sea winter navigation
Winter 2017, Bay of Bothnia, Baltic sea. Arrival to ice covered area. Meeting icebreakers Oden and Polaris. During mild winters like this one, the south westerly winds tend to pack the ice to the most northern part of Bay of Bothnia. Therefore areas around Kemi 1 lighthouse are very difficult to penetrate even for the strongest ships without icebreaker assistance. Usually Ice class 1A or higher (Finnish/Swedish) or equalent is required for entering the areas. Ice thickness of 70-100cm is common. Packed ice and ridges may result in ice thickness of several meters in some places. Several icebreakers operate in these areas and ships are guided to predefined routes for possible later assistance. Check out Polaris making "summer conditions" for the assisted vessel in the video!

China Vows To Challenge U.S. Freedom of Navigation In South China Sea
China Vows To Challenge U.S. Freedom of Navigation In South China Sea On Monday, China’s military vowed to beef up air, and sea patrols in the South China Sea. The move came after U.S warship, guided-missile destroyer USS Stethem sailed within 12 nautical miles of the Triton islands, a small isle in the Paracel Islands chain claimed, and controlled by China. China’s Defense Ministry, said the United States has “seriously damaged strategic mutual trust” between the two countries by entering what it claimed were China’s territorial waters, while the country’s Foreign Ministry accused the United States of staging a “serious political and military provocation.” The South China Sea’s tension could rise again, after President Trump said that China failed to pressure North Korea to stop its nuclear ballistic missiles, which could reaches U.S. mainland.

NORTHSEAKAYAK - Sea Kayak Navigation Course 2017
Although we spend a lot of time training on or in the water, we also make time to share some theoretical experience with the team. This time we’re talking about navigation and everything that comes with it. Again, we get to use the Bella Vista hall in the Westhoek Marina so a big thanks for the chairman Philippe! We started by giving an introduction, we spoke of the tides and how and why they occur and the influence it gives for us, sea kayakers. We prefer to start with basics, and slowly build up to the point that everyone can swiftly plot a course to steer, even with taking tidal streams in account. This video is in no way a training or instructional video, it’s just a way of showing how we do things in our NORTHSEAKAYAK team. Sea kayak navigation is very interesting, it’s great fun discovering the many small but important data a sea chart provides us. See you on the water!! Paddle safe!

Sea of Thieves How to navigate and compass basics tutorial
Problems understanding compass points and how they relate to the maps & charts? Here's some basics.
South China Sea: the Navy’s top officer says the US and China will ‘meet more and more on high seas’
Chief of US Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson said on Tuesday the US and China “will meet each other more and more on the high seas” after a Chinese warship came close to a US ship in the disputed South China Sea. The Chinese vessel came within 45 yards of the USS Decatur during a “freedom of navigation” sail in late September, US Vice President Mike Pence said this month. The US mission was the latest attempt to counter what Washington sees as Beijing’s efforts to limit freedom of navigation in the strategic waters, where Chinese, Japanese, and some Southeast Asian navies operate. In the weeks since, a US Navy research ship has visited Taiwan and two US warships sailed through the Taiwan Strait. China considers Taiwan a breakaway province and has bolstered its presence around the island country. In mid-October, during a meeting with his Japanese and South Korean counterparts, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said the US and its partners in the region would “continue to fly, sail, and operate wherever international law allows and our national interests demand.”

Navigating the Seas
My final project in my video class. I did the audio and rendering, as well as some of the modeling. The rest of the modeling was done by one partner, the pictures and final assembly was done by another partner. I had a pretty fantastic group for this project.

Freedom-of-Navigation Operations Aren’t All About the South China Sea
Freedom-of-Navigation Operations Aren’t All About the South China Sea SUBSCRIBE my channel here: https://goo.gl/F8gn4Z G+ here: https://goo.gl/UzMJVe ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The recent close encounter between USS Decatur and the Chinese Luyang II–class guided-missile destroyer Lanzhou has attracted much attention in the media. There’s little doubt that the Chinese ship created a dangerous situation in breach of the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, which requires a vessel that’s overtaking another to keep out of its way until ‘finally past and clear’. For a 7,000-tonne displacement ship to pass within 45 yards of another of 8,000 tonnes—an allegation apparently confirmed by the still video footage leaked by a U.S. source—in such circumstances was also in contravention of the Code for Unplanned Encounters at Sea, which enjoins warship captains to act with prudence. Both China and the United States are signatories to this admittedly ‘voluntary and non-binding’ agreement. But it’s possible to make too much of the incident. First, there have been much more serious encounters with Soviet units in the past—and close calls continue with Russian vessels. In 1988, the Soviet frigate Bezzavetny deliberately collided side-by-side with the American cruiser Yorktown in the Black Sea (an act known as ‘graunching’ or ‘shouldering off’). The destroyer Caron, in company with the Yorktown, was shouldered by a smaller Mirka-class corvette. The two American ships were conducting the same type of FONOPS as the Decatur in 2018—asserting their right to innocent passage through territorial waters without prior notification. Second, contemporary FONOPS are not only about China. The most recent annual reportby the U.S. Department of Defense shows that the U.S. Navy conducted such operations against 22 nations during 2017. These include countries as diverse as Slovenia and Oman, as well as Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam. In the past, even Sweden has been challenged on its prior notification requirement.
