The oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico has given researcher Antje Boetius a unique opportunity: the microbiologist from Bremen is studying a special kind of oil-eating bacteria that live on the sea bed and consume the crude oil that lands there.Boetius is trying to find out how these bacteria break down the oil - and whether she can increase their appetite. The condition of a stricken cargo ship stuck on a reef and leaking oil off the coast of New Zealand worsened on Wednesday, with about 70 containers falling overboard and the vessel moving onto a steeper lean. Aerial footage shows the ship has a large crack on one side and is listing sharply. ACI 2011 AWARD WINNING VIDEO. When the waters of the Gulf of Mexico were threatened by the Deepwater Horizon Spill last spring, FWC and its partners acted quickly. Biologists and rescue boats went out daily in search of impacted sea turtles. 130 visibly oiled turtles were found. Spotters stood on the boats fishing towers while staff used handheld nets to reach the turtles. Once aboard, the turtles were assessed, measured, weighed, photographed, tagged and samples were taken. Each site a turtle was found was recorded by GPS. Turtles not impacted were returned to the water while those impacted were brought to Gulf World in Panama City, FL. At this location they were given primary care until they were deemed stable and medically cleared to move to a new facility at Sea World. At Sea World, impacted turtles were completely rehabbed until they could be released back into the Gulf. On August 18, 2010 23 Kemp's Ridley's were releases in Cedar Key, FL. As a secondary precaution, FWC staff decided to move entire clutches of nests on the Gulf beaches. Each clutch has 45-50 eggs. These eggs were late in the incubation period where there gender was already determined and the magnetic cues that help turtles return to their beach of birth hopefully was already imprinted. Coolers were then taken to a holding area where they waited for Fed Ex trucks to take them to their next location at Kennedy Space Center in Port Canaveral, FL. These trucks were specially outfitted for this travel. The Kennedy Space Center offered climate controlled storage facility. Coolers were monitored and as hatchling's emerged they were released into the oil free waters of the Atlantic Ocean. More than 13,000 hatchling's were released. This video received a second place award in 2011 from the Association for Conservation Information.

Environmental problems require solutions that are non-toxic, safe, and efficient. But the technology used to face many of these problems has not improved over time. The technology to contain and clean oil spills, for example, has not seen much in the way of innovation in over 30 years— particularly boom technology. Arden was born in the West Indies on the island of Barbados. After immigrating to the USA as a teen, he followed his already established interest in science. Arden now has a doctorate, working by day as an Accelerator physicist at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and after hours as a tinkerer, attempting to solve problems he finds interesting and for which he thinks the solutions may be simpler to harness on shorter time scales. Cleaning oil spills using magnets. This greek patent goes around since 1997, was made at TEI of Piraeus. The technology is named "CleanMag" (cleaning magnetically). This video was produced officially by the Greek Ministry of Education in the frame of the programm "Awards in Academic Excellence" and has English subtitles. The method is basically using a magnetic POROUS material (so is floating all the times) which is olleophillic (sorbs only oily substances and not water). The amount of sorbtion is up to 10 times the weight of the material used (cleanmag) and the residual oil pollution has been certified to be at the order of 10 ppb (1500 less than the standards of MARPOL 73/78 which is 15 ppm). This is an ALL weather technology. After the collection of the material using magnetic conveyor belts (rate of collection for a conveyor of 1m in width is about 11 tons/hour of pure oil). After the collection of the material +sorbed oil , the pulp could be used or recycled as follows: a) getting the oil by chemical extraction and then incinerate the rest of material in high temperatures in cement kilns, without harming the air (no fluorocarbons or dioxins) b) incinerate directly the whole pulp again in cement industry or power plants c) first presurizing the pulp and getting the oil and subsequently use the remaining material in asphaltic products for road pavement. For up to tier 1 spills , there are available the magnetic skimmer vessels which they apply the material by a pneumatic way on the spill. For large oil spills could be used fire fighting helicopters throuing the material by air, or also firefighting planes (i.e. canadair type) which are made from aluminum withought the danger of "clogging" the outlets, since the magnetic material does not stick on the aluminum. The technology has been approved by EPA of USA, and has been awarded 4 times up today for its innovative character and real time demo results (including also an award by IMO -Seatrade award in Dubai in 2005). Recently a press release from some University indicates that researchers there tried in someway to "replicate " the technology by using magnetic nanoparticles. From the related article it is understood that the goal and idea is the same, with the difference that instead of a porous material (in order to stay afloat all the times), nanoparticles are being used. The short coming of using of nanoparticles in this technology though according to our experience among many, are the following: a) you need a high concentration of them in order to have strong enough magnetic collection by applying a high field gradient. Because the magnetic force is not only proportional to the magnetic field gradient applied but also it is proportional to the volume magnetization of the particles. Thus by apllying a lot of this "nanopowder" over a spill (in case this powder finally ends up in the spill) it turns the oil in such a heavy "ferrofluid" that eventually would sink. (Not to mention the problem of steering the particles in the oil for a good distribution) Because there are no material pores that contain "air jackets" in order to stay afloat all the times in all weather conditions!! No need to mention of the fact that ferrous oxide nanoparticles present a bulk density of more that 4 g/cc!! (heavier than oil and water). b) The difficulty in spraying by any means of these particles on a spill is going to be extremely difficult since the nanoparticle would behave in the air as the dust particles. New reports are surfacing every day about the immediate impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on Gulf Coast wildlife, especially as the oil reaches the sensitive marshlands along the coast. But how will these communities be affected over time? Scientists currently know very little about how long it takes for the hydrocarbons and heavy metals in crude oil to work their way through marine food webs. To address this issue, California Academy of Sciences researcher Peter Roopnarine is working with Laurie Anderson from Louisiana State University and David Goodwin from Denison University to collect and analyze three different types of mollusks from the Gulf Coast. These animals are continually building their shells, and if contaminants are present in their environment, they can incorporate those compounds into their shells. Roopnarine and his colleagues will study growth rings in the shells - much like scientists would study tree rings - to determine how quickly harmful compounds from the oil become incorporated into the animals' homemade armor. This series of images reveals a space-based view of the burning oil rig and the ensuing oil spill, through May 24. The imagery comes from the MODIS instruments aboard NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites. The oil slick appears grayish-beige in these images. The shape of the spill changes due to weather conditions, currents and the use of oil-dispersing chemicals. The images in this video were selected to show the spill most clearly. Oil spills are an unavoidable part of our future on this planet. Until we no longer have to rely on the messy stuff, we will still have to pump oil and ship it around the world, and drilling and shipping inevitably means spills. In this season of Upgrade, we head out to Fermilab, the nation's premier particle physics laboratory, to talk to Arden Warner. Warner, whose day job as a physicist consists of colliding high speed particles together, thought of a unique way to clean up oil spills—using magnets. Warner said he figured there had to be a way to organically magnetize spilled oil, which could then be magnetically collected. He showed us how to do this by adding the naturally-occurring magnetic mineral magnetite to spilled oil, which allows that oil to more easily be manipulated and captured than by other methods. We also take a look at how he has implemented these simple principles into an electromagnetic boom that could be used to change the future of oil spill recovery. The Exxon Valdez oil spill occurred in Prince William Sound, Alaska, on March 24, 1989, when Exxon Valdez, an oil tanker bound for Long Beach, California, struck Prince William Sound's Bligh Reef at 12:04 a.m. local time and spilled 260,000 to 750,000 barrels (41,000 to 119,000 m3) of crude oil over the next few days. It is considered to be one of the most devastating human-caused environmental disasters. The Valdez spill was the largest ever in US waters until the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, in terms of volume released. However, Prince William Sound's remote location, accessible only by helicopter, plane, or boat, made government and industry response efforts difficult and severely taxed existing plans for response. The region is a habitat for salmon, sea otters, seals and seabirds. The oil, originally extracted at the Prudhoe Bay oil field, eventually covered 1,300 miles (2,100 km) of coastline, and 11,000 square miles (28,000 km2) of ocean. Exxon's CEO, Lawrence Rawl, shaped the company's response. According to official reports, the ship was carrying approximately 55 million US gallons (210,000 m3) of oil, of which about 10.1 to 11 million US gallons (240,000 to 260,000 bbl; 38,000 to 42,000 m3) were spilled into the Prince William Sound. A figure of 11 million US gallons (260,000 bbl; 42,000 m3) was a commonly accepted estimate of the spill's volume and has been used by the State of Alaska's Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and environmental groups such as Greenpeace and the Sierra Club. Some groups, such as Defenders of Wildlife, dispute the official estimates, maintaining that the volume of the spill, which was calculated by subtracting the volume of material removed from the vessel's tanks after the spill from the volume of the original cargo, has been underreported. Alternative calculations, based on the assumption that the official reports underestimated how much seawater had been forced into the damaged tanks, placed the total at 25 to 32 million US gallons (600,000 to 760,000 bbl; 95,000 to 121,000 m3).
