I also include the latest trick that will make this easier if you are using SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2012. How do you compare a Datetime in SQL Server? A SQL Datetime stores both Date and Time. So when you are filtering using the SQL Where clause, you have to know if you Datetime is storing the time also. Let's take a look at the employee table in SQL Training Online Simple DB The column we are looking at is the hire date. I want to go after the person who was hired on February, 22 2005. So, I use the following SQL. select * from employee where hire_date='02/22/2005' Now, this works because we don't have any times stored in this column. But, if I change the record from 2005-02-22 00:00:00.000 to 2005-02-22 08:22:25.000 and rerun the query, you see that I don't get any results. That is because the value of 02/22/2005 is really 2005-02-22 00:00:00.000 and I just changed the hire_date to include a time other than 00:00:00.000. So, I have to tweak my query to use a greater than and less than sign. This works. But, to really understand what is going on, let me show you what SQL Server really sees. There are other ways, and in this StackOverflow article you can read more about these other ways. But, I want to point out a few. If you are working in SQL Server 2005 or earlier, the following is supposed to be the fastest performing way to do this. select datediff(dd,0, hire_date),* from employee where dateadd(dd,0, datediff(dd,0, hire_date)) = '2005-02-22' But, if you are working in SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2012, they have introduced an actual Date datatype that doesn't include the Time portion. Since this is the case, you can use the CAST function to remove the time from the Datetime. Conversion Functions :- CAST and CONVERT (Transact-SQL) Converts an expression of one data type to another.  Syntax -- Syntax for CAST: CAST ( expression AS data_type [ ( length ) ] ) -- Syntax for CONVERT: CONVERT ( data_type [ ( length ) ] , expression [ , style ] ) Implicit Conversion Explicit Conversion Implicit Conversion is done automatically Explicit Conversion is done programmatically. In Implicit conversion, no data loss take place during the data conversion. In explicit conversion, data loss may or may not be take place during data conversion. Hence there is a risk of information loss. No possibility of throwing exception during the conversion and therefore is called type safe. It might throw error if tried to do without type casting. Implicit conversion do not require any special syntax. Explicit conversion do require cast operator to perform conversion. Example : Example : Conversion of smaller number to larger number is implicit conversion. Conversion of larger number to smaller number is explicit conversion.  Arguments expression Is any valid expression. data_type Is the target data type. This includes xml, bigint, and sql_variant. Alias data types cannot be used. length Is an optional integer that specifies the length of the target data type. The default value is 30. style Is an integer expression that specifies how the CONVERT function is to translate expression. If style is NULL, NULL is returned. The range is determined by data_type. For more information, see the Remarks section.  Return Types Returns expression translated to data_type.  Remarks • Date and Time Styles When expression is a date or time data type, style can be one of the values shown in the following table. Other values are processed as 0. . Beginning with SQL Server 2012, the only styles that are supported when converting from date and time types to datetimeoffset are 0 or 1. All other conversion styles return error 9809. SQL Server supports the date format in Arabic style by using the Kuwaiti algorithm. Date and Time Data Types and Functions :-  CURRENT_TIMESTAMP (Transact-SQL) Returns the current database system timestamp as a datetime value without the database time zone offset. This value is derived from the operating system of the computer on which the instance of SQL Server is running. This function is the ANSI SQL equivalent to GETDATE.  Syntax CURRENT_TIMESTAMP  Arguments Takes no arguments.  Return Type Datetime  Remarks Transact-SQL statements can refer to CURRENT_TIMESTAMP anywhere they can refer to a datetime expression.CURRENT_TIMESTAMP is a nondeterministic function. Views and expressions that reference this column cannot be indexed. *********************************************************************  DATEADD (Transact-SQL) Returns a specified date with the specified number interval (signed integer) added to a specified datepart of that date.  Syntax DATEADD (datepart , number , date )  Arguments datepart Is the part of date to which an integernumber is added. Siebel CRM - Project 12 (Julian Day in BS, absolute date difference in days) 17/4/2015 *****WARNING***** This video is all about testing the results of my code which is a slow process (to say the least, bloody data entry!) and probably way too boring for most of you guys and gals so you might as well want to skip it.. *****WARNING***** This is more of a JavaScript than a Siebel “riddle” but here goes... Long story short, I needed a mechanism that accurately calculates the absolute difference between two dates in days. The result should be a positive whole number (integer) that represents the date interval in days. For instance, in a programming language called Guru (or Knowledgeman) we can achieve that just by using a built-in function to convert each of these dates to Julian days, subtract the results and use the absolute function (abs(tojul(Date1)-tojul(Date2))). We can do exactly the same thing in Excel using the datevalue (as long as the dates are after 1/1/1900) and abs functions. The results will look like this: Date1------------Date2-----------Difference in days 1/1/2000--------1/1/2000-------------0 1/1/2000 --------15/6/2000----------166 20/2/2000-------15/1/2004----------1425 19/4/2004-------20/2/2000----------1520 1/1/2000---------15/4/2000----------105 1/1/2000 ---------18/6/2004----------1630 1/1/2000---------22/9/2008-----------3187 1/1/2000---------18/4/2015-----------5586 1/1/1901---------18/4/2015-----------41745 18/6/2004-------18/6/2014-----------3652 18/6/2004-------1/2/2012-------------2784 18/9/2004-------30/4/2012-----------2781 This doesn’t seem to be a very straight forward task in JavaScript. Daylight saving time, time zones, calculations in milliseconds and rounding operations seem to cause inconsistencies. If you see JavaScript code that is supposed to do this but contains rounding operations (ceil, floor etc.) and the classic milliseconds/minutes/hours/days transformation operations then double and triple check the results using a variety of date pairs. I found quite a few JavaScript algorithms on the internet but to my surprise they'd calculate correctly the difference in days for some date ranges while they'd fail to do so for others. Siebel provides us with Julian functions so depending on "where" we are (calculated field, workflow etc.) and what we want to do we can either use these functions or even directly subtract two dates, add days to a date etc. But as far as I know we can’t access this functionality within a Business Service (or script in general), at least not directly (but who wants to keep invoking a workflow within a BS again and again just to do that, right?). So I created two new methods (functions) in one of my custom Business Services (although chances are I’ll just modify the code a bit, put it in a JS file and #include it whenever I need to use these functions): JulianDay(): this method contains the algorithm that converts a passed date to Julian Day. It always returns a positive integer (unless the date is BC but personally I’m more interested in days after 1/1/1900). All date format validations take place in this method. DateDiff(): it accepts two dates, calls JulianDay() for each of them and returns the absolute difference of the results which represents the actual date interval in days. Both methods work with "DD/MM/YYYY" date format but it's very easy to make them work with pretty much any date format (if needed). Let’s test them… I wrote a very simple routine in Guru that calculates these date differences (using the built-in functions) so we’ll use these results as a reference point. I also wrote a small Java application that does the same thing but using my algorithm. We won’t bother testing the previous 12 sets of dates as I’ve already cross-checked the results with Guru, Excel, Java and Siebel (JS). Before we start testing you should keep two things in mind: - The date format is "DD/MM/YYYY" - We don't care about the order of the dates so it doesn't matter which one is Date1 or Date2, the results will be exactly the same. We’ll get ten random pairs of dates from random.org and test the algorithm. Let’s test dates from 1/1/1900 to 31/12/2200. Guru’s, Java’s and Siebel’s results should match.

We are witnessing a huge surge in efforts and interest in developing machine-learning (ML) based solutions for optimizing large-scale networked systems. With the unprecedented availability of data and computing power, the early evidence on using ML for systems has been promising. Microsoft has been at the forefront of applying data at massive scales to address pressing issues in large-scale systems. At the same time, there is a growing voice in the systems and networking community for more “principled” solutions. They are concerned that building solutions we don’t fully understand will ultimately come back to bite us. This session intends to wade into this storm! What are the networked systems problems for which ML-based techniques are appropriate? Does the fact that the network is often a black box, with much uncertainty with regard to its state, make ML more or less appropriate for networked system than for systems in general? What is the right mix of ML and traditional modeling and algorithms? Do we really need a full understanding of solutions as the “traditionalists” insist? Google Tech Talk (more info below) March 29, 2011 Presented by Cliff Click, Azul Systems. ABSTRACT Just what the heck is a JVM *supposed* to do? JVMs already provide a host of services. The 'J' part definitely slants the service selection and the 'V' part means that underneath the illusion there's a lot of really cruddy stuff. The success of these illusions has led to the real popularity of JVMs. In particular, JVMs are probably the most popular way to distribute ready-to-use GC technology to the masses, and the 2nd most popular way to distribute ready-to-use compilation technology (just behind "gcc" I'm guessing). Just what are these illusions? The illusion that bytecodes are fast and have a reasonable cost model : (machine code generation, profiling, JIT'ing). The illusion that you can quickly change the program at any time (dynamic class loading, deoptimization, re-JIT'ing). The illusion of infinite memory (Garbage Collection). The illusion of a consistent threading and memory model (the JMM, volatiles, locks). The illusion of quick time access (i.e. Intel's "rdtsc" is mostly useless for time). The illusion that these other illusions all work on all sorts of machines from cell phones to 1000-cpu mainframes (it's kinda sorta mostly true). But these are not enough! The People cry out for more illusions! The illusion of an Infinite Stack (tail recursion), the illusion that running-code-is-data (closures), the illusion that Integers are as cheap as 'ints' (autoboxing optimizations), or that BigIntegers are as cheap as 'ints' (tagged ints), the illusion that memory supports atomic update (software transactional memory), or the illusion that with enough hard work other language implementation experts can make a JVM run utterly different languages (invokedynamic). Meanwhile, JVM engineers labor under the illusion that they can maintain this giant piggy pile of code, and maybe even expand the provided services without it collapsing under it's own weight. Here's my take on what services could & should be provided by a JVM, what services probably belong to the next layer up (STMs, new concurrency models), and what services belong to the next layer down (fast time management, sane thread scheduling).
