Products You Didn't Know Were Made From Petroleum Most people associate petroleum with transportation — but we are surrounded by thousands of other everyday products that come from this vital natural resource. A typical 42- gallon barrel of crude oil yields about 20 gallons of gasoline and 4 gallons of jet fuel. What products come from the other 18 gallons? Transcript: In our daily lives, we interact with hundreds to thousands of different objects that were manufactured by humans, a combination of many different natural materials to form a brand new creation. Because of this, it becomes rather easy to overlook what exactly the things we use everyday, are made of. Today let's clear up a few of those mysteries, and talk about what products we use in our daily lives, are made from petroleum. The petroleum refining process is the chemical engineering process and other facilities used in petroleum refineries (also referred to as oil refineries) to transform crude oil into useful products. Gasoline is obviously going to be the first thing that comes to our mind, but petroleum is surprisingly used for much more than that. In a standard 42-gallon barrel of petroleum oil, roughly 19 and a half gallons of gasoline are created, so over half of the barrel ends up being used on other products. On the topic of transportation, crude oil is also used in similar products such as such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), gasoline or petrol, kerosene, jet fuel, diesel oil and fuel oils. However, your car is using crude oil as more than just a fuel, petroleum is also found in tires as well. Petrol oil is very prominent in the production of rubber, which just so happens to be the entirety of what a tire is. In the entertainment business, petroleum is used to create a clear plastic coating on the bottom of CDs and DVDs. When you see light scratches that can be buffed out by a machine, these are often scuffs on the petroleum coating and not the disc itself, working as a shield against the horrors of being slid across a coffee table. Here’s where the uses of petroleum spread significantly further, the petroleum isn’t just featured in the plastic coating of CDs, but in most plastic produced in the entire united states. According to the U.S Energy Information Administration (say that three times fast!) “Plastics are made from liquid petroleum, liquid natural gas, and natural gas.” To rattle off of a few, this means petroleum can be found within shower curtains, fishing boots, toothbrushes, movie film, balloons, refrigerators and way more. The usage doesn’t end at plastic and oil though, because petroleum can even be traced into the food we eat. Packaged baked foods contain petroleum as a method of keeping them fresh, and resisting mold. Petrol is also found on the waxy coating on most chocolates, the dyes used to color the processed foods that we eat, and the preservatives found within many different types of canned food. Hopefully, this opened up your eyes a bit to the many uses of petroleum in our daily lives, as a MASSIVE amount of the things around us contain petroleum, or were created using machines that use petroleum. As a final interesting parting fact, studies show that if humanity’s rate of consumption remains the same, the oil below the earth’s surface would last about 50 more years before running out. Crude oils are not all the same, but rather vary in color, composition, and consistency. They are generally classified as” light” or “ heavy”, and “sweet” or “sour”. Unlike water, crude oil is not a chemical compound. Rather, it is a complex mixture of molecules, consisting of compounds formed from hydrogen and carbon atoms, called “hydrocarbons”. Just as water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit, each of the compounds in crude oil has its own boiling temperature. In general, the more carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon molecule, the higher the temperature at which it boils and vaporizes. It is this phenomenon that permits crude oil to be refined into so many different products.

Perdido is the deepest floating oil rig (platform) in the world at a water depth of about 2450 meters operated by the Shell Oil Company in the Gulf of Mexico. The collapse of oil prices and subsequent layoffs in the Upstream oil and gas sector has led to an increase in people asking, “What is the difference between Upstream and Downstream?” We have received this question from our members of our learning community, seen the question raised Linkedin discussions, and you can even see that ‘Upstream vs Downstream’ is a growing inquiry in Google searches. You are not alone! The oil and gas industry is like a see-saw. The low oil prices that are crushing upstream economics right now are a boon to downstream and petrochemical operations. Just look at the stock prices of upstream E&P operators (like Continental Resources) versus pure refiners (like Valero). Yet when most people think of the oil and gas industry, they think of upstream – searching for oil, drilling wells, and getting hydrocarbons out of the ground. There is much less common knowledge about the midstream and downstream segments of the industry. Maybe it’s just because they are more regulated and less exciting. And yes, the wildcatter holds a special place in our imaginations. What is Upstream? Most oil and gas companies’ business structures are segmented and organized according to business segment, assets, or function. The upstream segment of the oil and gas business is also known as the exploration and production (E&P) sector because it encompasses activities related to searching for, recovering and producing crude oil and natural gas. The upstream oil and gas segment is all about wells: where to locate them; how deep and how far to drill them; and how to design, construct, operate and manage them to deliver the greatest possible return on investment with the lightest, safest and smallest operational footprint. Exploration The exploration sector involves obtaining a lease and permission to drill from the owners of onshore or offshore acreage thought to contain oil or gas, and conducting necessary geological and geophysical (G&G) surveys required to explore for (and hopefully find) economic accumulations of oil or gas. Drilling There is always uncertainty in the geological and geophysical survey results. The only way to be sure that a prospect is favorable is to drill an exploratory well. Drilling is physically creating the “borehole” in the ground that will eventually become an oil or gas well. This work is done by rig contractors and service companies in the Oilfield Services business sector. Production The production sector of the upstream segment maximizes recovery of petroleum from subsurface reservoirs. Production activities include efficiently recovering the oil and gas in a producing filed using primary, secondary and tertiary, or enhanced oil recovery (also referred to as improved oil recovery). Plug and abandonment marks the end of the productive life of a well. That event can occur anywhere from a few years after the well is drilled to five or six decades later. What is Downstream? Processing, transporting and selling refined products made from crude oil is the business of the downstream segment of the oil and gas industry. Key downstream business sectors include: Oil Refining Supply and Trading Product Marketing and Retail The downstream industry provides thousands of products to end-user customers around the globe. Many products are familiar such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, heating oil and asphalt for roads. Others are not as familiar such as lubricants, synthetic rubber, plastics, fertilizers and pesticides. The downstream segment is a margin business. Margin is defined as the difference between the price realized for the products produced from the crude oil and the cost of the crude delivered to the refinery. Although the price of crude sets the absolute level of product prices, it may or may not affect refining or marketing margins. Downstream margins tend to be reduced, or squeezed, when crude price increases often cannot be recovered in the marketplace. On the other hand, margins tend to hold, or even increase, when crude prices drop and the marketplace more slowly adjusts to these lower crude prices. We’ve all seen this in action lately! The downstream segment includes complex and diverse activities including manufacturing, petrochemical refining, distribution, and retail. Once the process is complete, the liquid that was added previously is re-extracted and ready to be used again. At the end of the process you have two main products. One part is usable gas, one part is known as Syncrude, i.e. crude oil. With this the products can then be processed in the refinery to make gasoline, diesel and polymer – itself a base product for plastic. This means that if you fill up at OMV today or use plastic packaging, it has probably already had something to do with ReOil.
