How Seawater Desalination Works
CASE STUDY: Desalination is a complicated process, the Seven Seas Corp.* approached DaVinci Studio to develop an animation that simplified the explanation of the process. Taking a cue from Seven Seas we started with squiggly style animation to give the technical looking components a non-technical look. Bottom line is to go from engineering-speak to the layman's level. Desalination (also called "desalinization" and "desalting") is the process of removing dissolved salts from water, thus producing fresh water from seawater or brackish water. Desalting technologies can be used for many applications. The most prevalent use is to produce potable water from saline water for domestic or municipal purposes. How to convert seawater into drinking water [Class 6, Chapter 14, Water, NCERT]
Clearly, I do not want you to get stuck on a deserted island. Also, thankfully, I was not stuck on a deserted island myself; thus finding a plastic container wasn't too difficult. This video was a contrived attempt to urge middle school students to think about evaporation and condensation. Please do not use this method to distill water if you are actually stuck on an island. The water you produce will not be drinkable. And if you are watching this on YouTube while stranded on an island, then please check Whatsapp to see if you can connect with a friend who can come rescue you. Finally, here are some reliable sources that offer advice on how to collect drinking water in case you do get stranded. 1) National Geographic suggests that if you get stranded on an island, then your best chance of getting drinking water is to "collect rainwater." It also suggests that you can turn seawater into drinking water by "digging a hole in the ground, putting a container at the bottom and surrounding it with wet leaves... then, put a piece of plastic, such as tarp, on top of the hole and weigh it down with rocks so water can collect and fall into the container." http://www.nationalgeographic.com.au/nature/how-to-survive-on-a-deserted-island.aspx 2) USGS recommends using a "solar-still" to convert seawater to drinking water by leveraging evaporation and condensation while using a life raft. https://water.usgs.gov/edu/drinkseawater.html

New Tech Makes Seawater Safe To Drink
Access to clean drinking water is a huge problem in the world, and leads to millions of deaths a year. Scientists have tried to work on the problem, finding ways to make water otherwise unsafe to drink potable. There's a the membrane technique-- but it's very expensive and not a viable option in water-stressed areas. There's a new idea from the University of Texas at Austin in the form of a small chip that neutralizes chloride ions at the microscale, desalinating the water. It's promising...but is the tech there yet? Kim Horcher and science educator Cara Santa Maria discuss the new development. Pure drinking water from seawater using only solar energy. See how it is done using only the sun!
This man invented this clay structure that can distill and produce clean and pure drinking water from sea water. It may even produce distilled water from polluted water. The process of distillation is to evaporate any water source into steam or water vapor, and cool it down so only pure water is condensed and collected. But doing so passively is the difficult trick. This man has done so - and for the good of all the people in the world who will benefit from this invention!

Chennai Seawater Desalination Plant
Chennai Seawater Desalination Plant is the first and then the largest seawater desalination plant in India. The demand for drinkable water is ever on the increase and several cities and towns across the globe are struggling to meet the water requirements of its citizens. Chennai is a burgeoning metropolis with an unfulfilled requirement of safe drinking water, and that makes a multitude of projects the need of the hour. To provide a solution to the problem, IVRCL came up with a prestigious project of commissioning a 100 MLD desalination plant that converts sea water into safe potable water for about 3 million people in Chennai. The project has been awarded as one of the highly commendable Desalination Deals of the year 2007 at The Global Water Intelligence Conference in Barcelona, Spain. What Happens When You Drink SeaWater?
Video by https://www.kramgallery.com/ Over 2/3rds of the earth is covered in water, but only 2% of that water is pure. As clean drinking water becomes more scarce, you maybe wondering…What happens if I drink seawater? Let’s first examine how our bodies absorb water. You may remember the process of Osmosis where water moves from a less concentrated solution to a more concentrated solution, through a semi permeable membrane. The cell’s membrane allows water to pass through, but not the particles dissolved in water, like salt. Normally the saltiness of water inside our cells is the same as the saltiness outside our cells. When you drink water, a concentration difference takes place. Water from the outside your cell moves inside to maintain balance. This is called an isotonic state. When you drink too much seawater, the saltiness outside your cells will increase rapidly and the cells force water molecules out in order to restore balance. So even if you are already dehydrated, drinking sea water will cause your cells to release more water and you will end up peeing out more liquid than you take in. Conversely if you chug a massive amount of pure water, the exact opposite will happen. The saltiness outside your cells will decrease rapidly and water will be forced into your cells. This can cause the cells to swell and burst, which in extreme cases leads to seizures, coma and sometimes death! This would only occur if you were to chug 6 liters or more in an instant though. So what can you do if you are stranded on a deserted island with absolutely NO fresh water around? The simplest way to extract fresh clean water from the ocean is through distillation, which separates the salt from the water. In order to distill water you must heat the sea water so it evaporates, then trap the evaporated water vapor until it cools and condenses back into liquid water. Kinda like the moisture on your bathroom mirror after a hot shower. This condensed water will be free of all salt and 100% safe to drink. And be sure to subscribe :) Video by https://www.kramgallery.com/

Farming With Salty Water Is Possible
One of the many adverse effects of global climate change is the rise of sea levels, which scientists say can increase the salinity level of fresh water reserves. As saline water cannot be used for irrigation, farm fields close to the seashore are lost to agriculture. But a farm in Netherlands has managed to grow healthy and tasty vegetables in soil irrigated with salt water. VOA’s George Putic reports. STRANDED! How to Survive if Marooned on a Deserted Island
How to survive on a desert island. Stay calm. The most important thing for you to do at first is to remain calm and try to think clearly. If you start to panic, you can lose control and end up forfeiting your chances of survival. You won't do that well if you've driven yourself crazy. William Golding's novel 'Pincher Martin' is a great example that illustrates how you can't do anything unless you 'take control', because the main character in the story lets panic get the better of him. Try making a "buddy" out of an object or animal near you, and talk to them to calm down. You should make 'safety, water, shelter and food' your main priorities, in that order. Look around you and decide on some safety precautions. Start by asking yourself if the area around you is safe. Look around again and check if there are there any wild animals lurking in close proximity? Does it appear like there could be a flooding risk? The first important step is establishing whether the place where you are is physically safe. Establishing the Necessities- Look for clean and fresh water supply. Almost all people who are lost out at sea are found in a matter of hours or days. Science tells us that the human body can survive up to 2 weeks without food, but just 3-4 days without water. So if there is no natural source of fresh water, start looking for a way to collect rainwater. Any source of water is great! As long as you have found a source of water, you can try to purify or desalinate it later. If fresh water is available, try boil it for 2-3 minutes. This will purify it. If you have a desalination device, that's even better! If not, don't fret, there are actually several methods by which you can desalinate water. One such method is distillation. To distillate water, construct a solar still, or one that works over a fire. A solar still can be built by filling a large, flat container with salt water or even urine which can be re-used, if the need arises. Place a smaller container in the center with a rock inside it to hold it in place. Cover it with a thin sheet of plastic or whatever similar material you have and place a rock in the center above the cup. If placed in direct sunlight, the water will evaporate and it will condense on the plastic sheet, which will then run down the sheet and drip into the smaller container. For a method that works over a fire, create steam and condense the steam by using a large piece of metal or glass placed inside the steam. This will allow the condensed water to run into another container. Create a shelter. You will need a shelter as protection from the elements and from natural predators as well. The best options are usually a natural shelter such as a cave, or one that you build. The next step to follow after having found a natural shelter, is to build a more enduring shelter. A shelter acts as a home base, a warm and shady place for you to sleep in, a place for storing your resources, and a hiding place from beasts of prey as well. Ensure that the shelter above the ground so that bugs don't crawl all over you. Image titled Live on a Deserted Island Step 5 Find sources of food. The ocean is filled with life. Try building a low V-shaped wall made of stones at low tide, with the pointed part of the V pointing out towards the sea. At high tide, fish will swim into it, and get trapped as the tide flows out. There are a lot of edible roots and berries that you can actually consider eating, but do remember to watch out! Some of these roots and berries are poisonous and eating them would probably be fatal. Only eat them if you are sure they are safe to eat. The most reliable source of food on a deserted island are bugs. Yes, bugs! They can be found everywhere and they are an excellent source of protein, too. If you decide to fish with the bugs instead of eating them, a hook can be fashioned by carving out a stick into a hook shape and putting a barb on it. Tie string to it and you're in business. Take the time to evaluate your resources. Have you found a source of fresh water? Do you have a long range radio, satellite phone, or any other means of communication? Try to find other people who might be inhabiting the island. Remember that people can be your greatest resource. Start a fire. This may seem a bit trivial, but on a deserted island, fire has a number of uses. At the very least, it boosts morale. Fire can also be used to distill water, to cook, and to provide light for you and for your rescuers who can find you if they spot the fire! If you can't start a fire, don't worry, just move on to the next step and keep on trying. Music: SOS by Dhruva Aliman https://dhruvaaliman.bandcamp.com/album/what-must-be http://www.dhruvaaliman.com/

Freshwater from salt water using only solar energy
A federally funded research effort to revolutionize water treatment has yielded an off-grid technology that uses energy from sunlight alone to turn salt water into fresh drinking water. The desalination system, which uses a combination of membrane distillation technology and light-harvesting nanophotonics, is the first major innovation from the Center for Nanotechnology Enabled Water Treatment (NEWT), a multi-institutional engineering research center based at Rice University. Why Don't We Just Use Desalination Of Ocean Water To Solve Our Water Shortage Problems?
In the middle of the Mojave Desert, Las Vegas casinos use billions of gallons of water for fountains, pirate lagoons, wave machines, and indoor canals. Meanwhile, the town of Orme, Tennessee, must truck in water from Alabama because it has literally run out. Robert Glennon captures the irony and tragedy of America's water crisis that is both frightening and wickedly comical. From manufactured snow for tourists in Atlanta to trillions of gallons of water flushed down the toilet each year, Robert Glennon reveals the heady extravagances and everyday inefficiencies that are sucking the nation dry. The looming catastrophe remains hidden as government diverts supplies from one area to another to keep water flowing from the tap. But sooner rather than later, the shell game has to end. And when it does, shortages will threaten not only the environment, but every aspect of American life: we face shuttered power plants and jobless workers, decimated fisheries and contaminated drinking water. We can't engineer our way out of the problem, either with traditional fixes or zany schemes to tow icebergs from Alaska. In fact, new demands for water, particularly the enormous supply needed for ethanol and energy production, will only worsen the crisis. America must make hard choices and Glennon's answers are fittingly provocative. He proposes market-based solutions that value water as both a commodity and a fundamental human right. One truth runs throughout this lecture: only when we recognize waters worth will we begin to conserve it. Turning Salt water into Drinking water using Solar power | QPT
According to the Securing Water for Food agency, between 2000 and 2050 water demand is expected to increase 55 percent globally, meaning the number of people affected by water scarcity will continue to grow. By 2025, two-thirds of the world's population could be living in severe water stress conditions. Around the world, there is more salty groundwater than fresh, drinkable groundwater. For example, 60 percent of India is underlain by salty water — and much of that area is not served by an electric grid that could run conventional reverse-osmosis desalination plants. To find solution for this drinking water issue in developing countries, USAID the U.S. Agency for International Development had run a global competion for Desal prize. The idea for the competition was to create a system that could remove salt from water and meet three criteria: it had to be cost-effective, environmentally sustainable, and energy efficient. The winners of the $140,000 first prize were a group from MIT and Jain Irrigation Systems. The group came up with a method that uses solar panels to charge a bank of batteries. The batteries then power a system that removes salt from the water through electrodialysis, that means that dissolved salt particles, which have a slight electric charge, are drawn out of the water when a small electrical current is applied. Using the sun instead of fossil fuels to power a desalination plant isn't a totally new idea. Larger solar desalination plants are being seriously investigated in areas where water is becoming a scarce resource, including Chile and California. But the current technology is expensive. The MIT team's this new desalination technology "electrodialysis" is comparatively less expensive. Both electrodialysis and reverse osmosis require the use of membranes, but the membranes in an electrodialysis system are exposed to lower pressures and can be cleared of salt buildup simply by reversing the electrical polarity. That means the expensive membranes should last much longer and require less maintenance. In addition, electrodialysis systems recover a much higher percentage of the water — more than 90 percent, compared with about 40 to 60 percent from reverse-osmosis systems, a big advantage in areas where water is scarce. DIY: Emergency Desalination still (salt water purification)
If you're stuck near the ocean with access only to salt water you may want to give this a try. This simple desalination / desalinization, or desalinisation still removes salt from salt water and gives you potable water when you're done. In this version I use 1 pot to boil water, aluminum foil totrap the condensation, which is then funneled through a hydration reservoir tube, down into a catchment container. A wet cloth is used to aid condensing of the steam. This was my first try and it worked well, except for some escaping steam. Turning Salt Water into Drinking Water using Solar Power
WELCOME! 😃 SUBSCRIBE ► http://bit.ly/2fu2wQF | ★ PREVIOUS VIDEOS ► http://bit.ly/2vHZRJk ********************************** Turning Salt Water into Drinking Water using Solar Power New research details method for distilling water by converting solar energy. Nearly 97% of all the water on earth is salt water. The typical process to remove salt is by boiling the water and capturing the steam. Desalination is expensive and energy intensive. Presently, there are more than 18,000 desalination plants across 150 countries. New federally funded research reveals a method of purifying water by using solar power. The research, titled “Nanophotonics-enabled solar membrane distillation for off-grid water purification” was published this month in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal. “Direct solar desalination could be a game changer for some of the estimated 1 billion people who lack access to clean drinking water,” said Qilin Li, co-author of the study. “This off-grid technology is capable of providing sufficient clean water for family use in a compact footprint, and it can be scaled up to provide water for larger communities.” The device works in correlation with another technology developed at Rice University, known as membrane distillation. This type of distillation works by running hot salt water down one side of a porous surface and purified water down the other. “We report a direct solar method for desalination that utilizes nanoparticle-assisted solar vaporization in a membrane distillation geometry,” says the article. Engineered nanoparticles capture solar energy and change it to heat, to enable the distillation. The researchers used a very thin solar-heated membrane. They were able to produce 6 liters (1.3 gallons) of water per hour, per square meter of membrane. The prospect is to make these membrane panels available in different sizes according to daily water production needs. “Depending on the water production rate you need, you could calculate how much membrane area you would need,” said Li. “For example, if you need 20 liters per hour, and the panels produce 6 liters per hour per square meter, you would order a little over 3 square meters of panels.” Various types of renewable energy hold great potential for cutting back globally on use of carbon and nuclear power, and reducing emissions. As global warming continues to threaten our health and resources, new technologies like solar-powered water purification could save lives. ********************************** ★ SUBSCRIBE TO MY CHANNEL TO BE INFORMED FOR NEW DAILY VIDEOS! Korean city turning seawater to drinking water

다음 달부터 한국 바닷물 마신다!
Last minute touches are being put to a plant in Korea′s southern port city of Busan that,... in less than a month,... will provide almost 50-thousand tons of drinking water for the city every day. For more on the nation′s first desalination plant that will quench the city′s thirst with previously undrinkable water,... here′s our Connie Lee. It′s this seawater surrounding Korea′s southern coast... that′s being turned into fresh, drinkable water. [ ] Korea now has its very first desalination plant built and ready to go, for full operation starting in January. Located in the southern port city of Busan ... the 175-million U.S. dollar plant can pump in about 100-thousand tons of water per day from the ocean, remove the salt, and turn it into 45-thousand tons of fresh water enough for about 150-thousand residents in the city. This high-tech facility was built by Korea′s very own Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction currently the number one leader in the desalination plant market. "Our company has been building these plants and working on desalination technology for about 40 years now. / We built this one to help expand our overseas market and prepare for future water shortages." The purified water has been certified as "safe to drink" by the Busan Water Authority, and the cost for consumers will be the same as fresh water from other sources. So is Korea facing a water shortage? Well, not right now but potentially, yes. According to a recent UN report,... by the year 2030... nearly half of the global population will face water shortages, due to demand exceeding water supply. "The world is headed towards water shortages. / Desalination plants are one way to fight water scarcity, and in the past two to three years, the number of these plants has grown ten-fold." There are currently more than 16-thousand desalination plants worldwide... and in the face of water scarcity, the number is expected to increase in the years to come. Connie Lee, Arirang News, Busan.
