15 Recent Science Discoveries You Wont Believe

08:39
15 amazing recent discoveries in the world of science and here they are from bionic contact lenses to reanimating dinosaur dna! Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 7. New Human Species Biologists all over the world were intrigued upon hearing the 2015 discovery of a new species of human, Homo Naledi, allowing for an ever clearer picture of our ancient ancestry. The findings were unveiled deep in an underground cave in South Africa and is considered one of the greatest collection of human remains ever unearthed. So far, it is known that this species of human grew to an average height of 5 feet and had a brain no larger than an orange. The way the bones in the South African cave were arranged suggests that these human ancestors ritualistically buried their dead, giving scientists a glimpse into our cultural past. 6. Bionic Lens While still in the testing stage, the founder of Ocumetics Technology Corp may have stumbled upon a revolutionary technology that could augment the way humans perceive the world. A new bionic contact lens will give wearers an ability to see the world with stronger than 20/20 vision. Some subjects, who have already tried the lens themselves, claim that they not only see better than ever before but have identified a unique spectrum of colors unfamiliar to the unaided eye. Is this perhaps the first step in the direction of a new era of superhumans? 5. Harder Than Diamond Scientists may have recently discovered a substance harder than diamond, Q-carbon. What gives diamonds their excellent hardness are the chemical bonds that hold them together. The carbon in diamonds is held together by incredibly tight chemical bonds at the microscopic level, giving diamonds their prominent hardness. By the manipulation of carbon atoms, scientists were able to augment their chemical bonds, producing a material that is potentially 60 times harder than diamond. While this substance is still being experimented on, it is a potential prospect for the future of cheap, efficient technologies. 4. First Mammals Researchers from the University of Edinburgh have discovered an ancient species of mammals that survived the notorious extinction of the dinosaurs over 65 million years ago. The reason this find is so significant is that it gives us a glimpse at how mammals began to rule the world previously dominated by their cold-blooded counterparts. The mammal is thought to have been a plant-eater closely resembling a modern beaver. Once the dinosaurs were eliminated these beaver-like creatures began to flourish, given that they were no longer victims of dinosaur predators. Because these little guys were able to withstand the destruction that wrecked havoc on the dinosaurs, an array of mammals, including our ancestors, were finally able to leave their mark on the world. 3. Whale Gene Mapping Gene mapping is starting to look less like a theoretical nicety and more like an applied science with this new aquatic discovery. Scientists have finally discovered why Bowhead Whales are able to live to 200 years old by remapping their entire genome. By comparing the genome of Bowhead Whales with the genome of other mammals with a less impressive lifespan, scientists were able to point out marked differences. Bowhead longevity is due to its genes’ effectiveness in repairing gene deterioration, which is the cause of cancer and other ailments known to cut human life short. By further studying this animal’s genes, scientists may finally be able to restore our own faulty genetic system, substantially lengthening our lives. 2. Second Earth NASA has recently confirmed their discovery of a possible second Earth. Kepler-452b orbits its sun in what scientists call the “Goldilocks Zone,” which is the habitable region in space, not too far or close to the sun, necessary for the possibility of life to flourish. The new planet appears to have a rocky surface as well as liquid water, which is another key ingredient for life to subsist. Although not much is known about if there is life beyond Earth, it makes sense to take notice of planets similar to our own. 1. Animal Re-animation Scientists have always been intrigued by the prospect of re-animating creatures that have been extinct for many years. While bringing a dinosaur back to life would be kind of cool, bringing a Wooly Mammoth back to life would be just as cool, and that is just what scientists are trying to do. Because Wooly Mammoths and Saber-Toothed Tigers have only been extinct for tens of thousands of years, unlike the millions of years dinosaurs have been extinct, intact DNA samples are much easier to find. Scientists believe it is possible to recreate these extinct beasts by cloning them with DNA and tissue samples, which have been found, over the years, preserved in ice.

Carl Zimmer (born 1966) is a popular science writer and blogger who has specialized in the topics of evolution and parasites. He has authored many books and contributes science essays to publications such as The New York Times, Discover, and National Geographic. He is a fellow at Yale University's Morse College. Zimmer describes his journalistic beat as "life" or "what it means to be alive." He is also the only science writer to have a species of tapeworm (Cestoda) named for him. Besides his popular science writing, Zimmer also gives frequent lectures, and has appeared on many radio shows, including National Public Radio's Radiolab, Fresh Air and This American Life. He has won many awards, including the 2007 National Academies Communication Award, a prize for science communication[4] from the United States National Academy of Sciences, for his wide-ranging coverage of biology and evolution in newspapers, magazines and his blog. In 2009 and 2010 he was host of the periodic audio podcast Meet the Scientist [5] of the American Society for Microbiology (replacing Merry Buckley). Zimmer received his B.A. in English from Yale University in 1987. In 1989, Zimmer started at Discover magazine, first as a copy editor and fact checker, eventually becoming a contributing editor. Science, space and human discovery - reinventing the world (2/6) | DW Documentary

42:26
Part 2 of "Reinventing the World - 500 years of the Reformation" examine the link between the 1600s and the current search for truth in the digital age. The 1600s saw much scientific progress and innovation: from the first newspaper publication to the discovery of new planets. Spirituality and technology dominated the world. A first version of mass media was born in the 17th century, and around the same time, trade became truly global. In the second episode of "Reinventing the World" we meet Johann Carolus, the man who invented the newspaper; the legendary astronomer Johannes Kepler, and the shopkeeper Anna Veltmans, who was accused of witchcraft. Johannes Kepler’s laws of planetary motion - including the proposal that planets move about the sun in elliptical orbits - revolutionized our understanding of our place in the world. Modern science was born. But women accused of witchcraft were still being burned at the stake. In this episode of "Reinventing the World" we trace the birth of the modern world and ask how far we have come in our quest for meaning and truth. Along with our historical protagonists, we hear from Pauline Tillmann, a young journalist who set up an online platform to promote long-read reporting and give women in the media more of a voice. We also meet Caroline Dorn, an astrophysicist based in Bern who researches exoplanets. William Shatner: "Logic of Imagination" Propels Scientific Discovery

02:43
Scientific discovery is more complex than simply observing the physical world. How we observe and how we draw conclusions is driven by the human imagination, says Mr. Shatner. Shatner's book is "Leonard: My Fifty-Year Friendship with a Remarkable Man" (http://goo.gl/bVha5E). Read more at BigThink.com: http://bigthink.com/videos/william-shatner-on-science-and-imagination Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript - The mystery that surrounds us is so profound, 90 to 98 percent, that eight percent differs from the thing you read to the thing you read is dark energy or dark matter. We don't know what it is. We don't know what 98 percent of the universe is. And this wonderful man Einstein, this wonderful man who imagined these scientific theories, much like the Greeks who said all right, If you cut something in half you've got a half. And then you cut that half and you keep going down the line you must come to the end and they said we'll call it an atom. And that's how they made their scientific discoveries through the logic of imagination. Whereas we have tools to dimly, dimly see into the physical nature, dimly see a law yeah, that seems to be a law. Wait a minute, there's something here that counteracts that law. So just like our diets, the pyramid, carbohydrates, a little bit of meat, one day is 180 degrees reversed. No, no, no, what we meant was protein and a little bit of carbohydrates; exactly 180 degrees different in your diet. That's what's happening in science all the time. There's a wonderful line, scientists spread rumors. We know everything is unified. We know. If we use our imagination like the Greeks, we look around us and we say the whole world is unified electrically, atoms, matter, there's got to be an operating - the thing has to be managed in some way. It's there. Everything follows a logic. We have these little instruments that will peer into the universe. We're seeing a spec. We're seeing a dust mote. Wouldn't the theory of everything maybe you discover that as you die, maybe as you die you go there is the theory of everything. Boom. And you're dead.

The True Nature Of Time - New Documentary

57:52
The True Nature Of Time - New Documentary 2016 Theories of science have ignored time… until now. A new idea reveals how it created the Universe – and you, writes Robert Matthews. Time: it rules our lives, and we all wish we had more of it. Businesses make money out of it, and scientists can measure it with astonishing accuracy. Earlier this year, American researchers unveiled an atomic clock accurate to better than one second since the Big Bang 14 billion years ago. But what, exactly, is time? Despite its familiarity, its ineffability has defied even the greatest thinkers. Over 1,600 years ago the philosopher Augustine of Hippo admitted defeat with words that still resonate: “If no-one asks me, I know what it is. If I wish to explain it to him who asks, I do not know.” Yet according to theoretical physicist Lee Smolin, the time has come to grapple with this ancient conundrum: “Understanding the nature of time is the single most important problem facing science,” he says. As one of the founders of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Ontario, Canada, which specialises in tackling fundamental questions in physics, Professor Smolin has spent more time pondering deep questions than most. So why does he think the nature of time is so important? Because, says Smolin, it is central to the success of attempts to understand reality itself. To most people, this may sound a bit overblown. Since reality in all its forms, from the Big Bang to the Sunday roast, depends on time, isn’t it obvious that we should take time seriously? And didn’t scientists sort out its mysteries centuries ago?

Join Professor Sue Black OBE and her team as they use forensic science to investigate the dug up remains of everyday people from across the ages to try and answer three big questions, who were they? Why did they die? And what did we learn that we didn't know before? In this live stream, watch the team open up multiple cases including: an apparently African skeleton that was unearthed near a medieval monastery, a bizarre mummified body of a 19th century child, a mysterious skeleton that was found in Stirling Castle and finally, a skeleton that is covered with disfiguring scars. The Most Dangerous Snake Discovery Channel Documentary HD

The Most Dangerous Snake King Cobra Discovery Channel Documentary cobra starship cobra cobra starship you make me feel cobra starship good girl's gonna go bad lyrics cobrak cobrastyle cobra starship snakes on a plane cobra gypsies in this video. Cobra (/ˈkōbrə/ About this sound pronunciation (help·info)) is the Portuguese word for "snake". In English and in some other languages, it has been adopted as the name for any of various species of venomous snakes. Most of those species are in the family Elapidae, all of which are venomous. Most of them can spread their neck ribs to form a flattened, widened hood. Not all snakes commonly referred to as cobras are of the same genus, or even in the family Elapidae. The name "cobra" is short for cobra de capelo or cobra-de-capelo, which is Portuguese for "snake with hood", or "hood-snake".[1] In some modern languages, such as Afrikaans, the other part of the Portuguese name was adopted, and the predominant name for a cobra in Afrikaans is "kapel".[2][3] When disturbed, most of these snakes rear up and spread their necks (or hoods) in a characteristic threat display, making them a favorite of snake charmers because of the dramatic effect. Long ago, snake charming used to be a religious ritual, though nowadays it has become an entertainment. Cobras, which may live up to 20 years, are found from southern Africa, through southern Asia, to some of the islands of Southeast Asia. Cobra may refer to: Although the king cobra, Ophiophagus hannah, the world’s longest venomous snake, is a member of the Elapidae and can raise a rather narrow hood if disturbed, it is not in the genus Naja, and, accordingly, is not a true cobra. The other cobra of Asia is known as the Asian, Indian or Spectacled cobra (Naja naja) due to the eyeglass-shaped pattern on its skin. The hood of the Asian cobra is larger than that of the king cobra and is usually yellow or brown with a black and white spectacle pattern on top and two black and white spots on the lower surface although albino specimens are also found.[5] The Rinkhals, Hemachatus haemachatus, also called a spitting cobra, is endemic to southern Africa. It also is not in the genus Naja. Although the bites of some species are extremely dangerous because of their potent neurotoxins, cobras have not been shown to attack people unprovoked. Cobras almost never attack without a threat display, which typically involves raising the hood and hissing.[citation needed] Various species of cobras prey mainly on other snakes, birds and small mammals, while its main natural predators in turn are other snakes, birds of prey, and small predatory mammals such as mongooses.[citation needed] Although most cobras do not make nests, some species protect their eggs until they hatch (incubation typically taking around 60 days)

The short version is this: You fly me in, take care of my hotel, and I'll face down any scientific body you put against me. My only debate requirement is that you have someone with a Master's degree in a physical science either participating in, or supervising the event. Wrote the book, "Biologically Closed Electric Circuits". The 'electric watchdog keeping everything in balance' is actually the sodium potassium pump Dr West discovered, but Nordenstrom didn't have the science on that yet. Hubble - 15 years of discovery

ESA’s anniversary DVD film “Hubble - 15 years of discovery” covers all aspects of the Hubble Space Telescope project – a journey through the history, the troubled early life and the ultimate scientific successes of Hubble. This portrait, directed by Lars Lindberg Christensen, contains large amounts of previously unpublished footage of superb quality. With more than 500,000 copies distributed, this DVD movie is probably the most widely available science documentary ever. Hubble's spectacular visual images make a stunning backdrop throughout the film, bringing an immediacy and vitality as the narrative reveals the new insights Hubble has inspired in all fields of astronomy from exoplanets to black holes. Complex though the science behind the telescope’s images often is, Art Director Martin Kornmesser has developed a unique style of elaborate 3D animation that enhances and vividly clarifies the underlying science. The movie is presented by an ESA scientist, Dr. Robert (Bob) Fosbury, who has himself used Hubble for his own research on many occasions.
