15 Recent Science Discoveries You Wont Believe

08:39
15 amazing recent discoveries in the world of science and here they are from bionic contact lenses to reanimating dinosaur dna! Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 7. New Human Species Biologists all over the world were intrigued upon hearing the 2015 discovery of a new species of human, Homo Naledi, allowing for an ever clearer picture of our ancient ancestry. The findings were unveiled deep in an underground cave in South Africa and is considered one of the greatest collection of human remains ever unearthed. So far, it is known that this species of human grew to an average height of 5 feet and had a brain no larger than an orange. The way the bones in the South African cave were arranged suggests that these human ancestors ritualistically buried their dead, giving scientists a glimpse into our cultural past. 6. Bionic Lens While still in the testing stage, the founder of Ocumetics Technology Corp may have stumbled upon a revolutionary technology that could augment the way humans perceive the world. A new bionic contact lens will give wearers an ability to see the world with stronger than 20/20 vision. Some subjects, who have already tried the lens themselves, claim that they not only see better than ever before but have identified a unique spectrum of colors unfamiliar to the unaided eye. Is this perhaps the first step in the direction of a new era of superhumans? 5. Harder Than Diamond Scientists may have recently discovered a substance harder than diamond, Q-carbon. What gives diamonds their excellent hardness are the chemical bonds that hold them together. The carbon in diamonds is held together by incredibly tight chemical bonds at the microscopic level, giving diamonds their prominent hardness. By the manipulation of carbon atoms, scientists were able to augment their chemical bonds, producing a material that is potentially 60 times harder than diamond. While this substance is still being experimented on, it is a potential prospect for the future of cheap, efficient technologies. 4. First Mammals Researchers from the University of Edinburgh have discovered an ancient species of mammals that survived the notorious extinction of the dinosaurs over 65 million years ago. The reason this find is so significant is that it gives us a glimpse at how mammals began to rule the world previously dominated by their cold-blooded counterparts. The mammal is thought to have been a plant-eater closely resembling a modern beaver. Once the dinosaurs were eliminated these beaver-like creatures began to flourish, given that they were no longer victims of dinosaur predators. Because these little guys were able to withstand the destruction that wrecked havoc on the dinosaurs, an array of mammals, including our ancestors, were finally able to leave their mark on the world. 3. Whale Gene Mapping Gene mapping is starting to look less like a theoretical nicety and more like an applied science with this new aquatic discovery. Scientists have finally discovered why Bowhead Whales are able to live to 200 years old by remapping their entire genome. By comparing the genome of Bowhead Whales with the genome of other mammals with a less impressive lifespan, scientists were able to point out marked differences. Bowhead longevity is due to its genes’ effectiveness in repairing gene deterioration, which is the cause of cancer and other ailments known to cut human life short. By further studying this animal’s genes, scientists may finally be able to restore our own faulty genetic system, substantially lengthening our lives. 2. Second Earth NASA has recently confirmed their discovery of a possible second Earth. Kepler-452b orbits its sun in what scientists call the “Goldilocks Zone,” which is the habitable region in space, not too far or close to the sun, necessary for the possibility of life to flourish. The new planet appears to have a rocky surface as well as liquid water, which is another key ingredient for life to subsist. Although not much is known about if there is life beyond Earth, it makes sense to take notice of planets similar to our own. 1. Animal Re-animation Scientists have always been intrigued by the prospect of re-animating creatures that have been extinct for many years. While bringing a dinosaur back to life would be kind of cool, bringing a Wooly Mammoth back to life would be just as cool, and that is just what scientists are trying to do. Because Wooly Mammoths and Saber-Toothed Tigers have only been extinct for tens of thousands of years, unlike the millions of years dinosaurs have been extinct, intact DNA samples are much easier to find. Scientists believe it is possible to recreate these extinct beasts by cloning them with DNA and tissue samples, which have been found, over the years, preserved in ice.

Dr. Khalsa of Harvard Medical School on the Science Behind Yoga

56:34
It is my distinct pleasure to bring to you one of the most prominent yoga researchers in the world - Dr. Khalsa from the Harvard Medical School. Yoga is not like the other alternative medicine/therapies that have been debunked by many academics. Dr. Khalsa is a yoga practitioner and a researcher. That may lead some among us to think of possible biases in his work, but those familiar with the academic world can tell you that this is really not possible in this type of investigation. Listening to him you will realize that yoga is not just a routine. It does have almost magical benefits as you will recognize by the end of the conversation. Indeed all of it is not yet validated but there is enough evidence for anybody to get started and literally transform one's life - physically, mentally, and emotionally - you do indeed become a better person with the yoga lifestyle. If you need scientific validation before you can be convinced for getting onto the yoga mat, or to meditate, please take time to view this video. After listening to Dr.Khalsa, there will be little doubt that yoga practice is more powerful than any other regimen. How much it can change your life remains to be understood properly but it is clear that yoga needs to be a part of our daily rituals just like brushing and bathing.

Science (journal) - Medical Meaning and Pronunciation

01:37
Science (journal) Science (journal): A weekly journal concerning science. Science was founded in 1880 by one of the world's most famous scientists, Thomas Alva Edison, inventor of the light bulb. Science is the world's general scientific publication with the largest circulation. For the sake of comparison, Science's only competitor, the prestigious English journal Nature, has one third the number of subscribers worldwide. Science is published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (the AAAS). An online was version is now also available (at sciencemag.org). Science provides an unusual blend of two very different kinds of editorial material -- the most important news of the week in science and in science policy and a selection of scientific papers reporting the most significant breakthroughs in research (including many that are important to medicine). In this sense, Science is both a news magazine and a traditional scientific journal wrapped together under one cover. In addition, Science often publishes special in-depth sections on a specific topic. Some are about scientific careers. Other are on research areas -- for example, the latest developments in biotechnology, parasitology, or the genome project. FAKE N̶E̶W̶S̶ SCIENCE

08:50
FULL MEASURE May 7, 2017 - Fake Science Pharmaceutical companies often fund scientific and medical studies to manipulate the research and get the results they desire. These industries do not focus on PREVENTION and treatment of diseases/illnesses but rather on prescribing patients with medicine and keeping them on the drugs as long as possible. Dr. Angell elaborated on how scientific journals have devolved over the years, going from vigorously fact-checked to riddled with conflicts of interest: “It used to be that way, as you describe it, pretty simple, and it began to change as the pharmaceutical industry became richer, more powerful, more influential, and began to take over the sponsorship of probably most clinical research. “I came to the New England Journal of Medicine in 1979. Starting about then was when you saw the drug companies assert more and more control until finally they over the next couple of decades, they began to treat the researchers as hired hands. “They would design the research themselves. You know you can do a lot of mischief in how you design a trial. “Or we’ll test this drug and we’ll tell you whether it can be published or not, and so if it’s a positive study, it’s published, if it’s a negative study, it’ll never see the light of day. ” An official of the company said something to the effect of, ‘we have put $30 million into that study, we have our rights,’ or something like that.” Dr. Marcia Angell left her job in New England Journal of Medicine in 2000 and in 2009 she famously wrote an article warning the public to be very skeptical of what research they read: “It is simply no longer possible to believe much of the clinical research that is published.” We’ve all heard of fake news….but now, even the cherished establishment of science seems to be fraught with fraudulence. “I think physicians and the public have come to believe that drugs are much better and much safer than they really are,” says Dr. Marcia Angell of Harvard, a pioneer in the medical journal field (who worked for the New England Journal of Medicine for 20 years as the first female Editor in Chief from 1999 to 2000). https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/196846 https://web.archive.org/web/20180103233330/https://ethics.harvard.edu/blog/demythologizing-corrupted-facts-and-claims-big-pharma A Lack Of Oversight In Drug Studies https://joedubs.com/statins-starve-the-brain/

Fairy Tale Science and Placebo Medicine - Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM)

39:22
http://facebook.com/ScienceReason ... Harriet Hall with her talk "Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM): Fairy Tale Science and Placebo Medicine", World Skeptics Congress 2012 in Berlin. Introduction by Willem Betz. --- More videos of the World Skeptics Congress will be uploaded to the following channels: • http://www.youtube.com/FFreeThinker • http://www.youtube.com/ScienceTV • http://www.youtube.com/Best0fScience • http://www.youtube.com/RationalHumanism • http://www.youtube.com/WissensMagazin Please don't forget to subscribe! Playlist: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL602E2CD13B5D203C --- Harriet Hall, MD, aka "The SkepDoc," is a retired family physician and former Air Force flight surgeon who writes prolifically about science, critical thinking, alternative medicine, and quackery. She is a CSI fellow, a contributing editor to both Skeptic and Skeptical Inquirer magazines, an editor of the Science-Based Medicine blog, an adviser to the Quackwatch website, a founding fellow of the Institute for Science in Medicine, and is on the editorial review board of the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database. --- Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is an artificial category covering a wide variety of treatments that are dubious, untested, or inadequately tested. Medicine that has been proven to work is just "medicine" -- not CAM. Science is the only reliable way to find out if a treatment really works, and proponents of CAM have recognized the need for scientific studies to support their claims. Unfortunately, good science requires more than just getting positive results from a controlled study. When therapies based on fantasy are studied with the tools of science, it produces confusing noise. Studying how much money the Tooth Fairy leaves under the pillow doesn't prove she exists. Pragmatic studies give an unfair advantage to treatments that have no specific effects but are dressed up like Cinderella with non-specific effects. Energy medicine modalities like Therapeutic Touch are a bit like the Emperor's New Clothes: they have impressed adults with apparently supporting studies; but a 9 year old child, Emily Rosa, pointed out their nakedness with a simple experiment showing that practitioners were deceiving themselves. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews are often flawed, especially when applied to improbable modalities. When science shows that a CAM treatment works no better than placebo, some CAM advocates accept the results but argue that we should use the treatment anyway, because placebos make patients feel better. This constitutes a double standard, because we wouldn't accept that argument for prescription drugs. Prescribing placebos is unethical, and placebo use can lead to harm in several different ways. There is only one science, and it must be rigorously applied to determine the effectiveness and safety of any treatment, whether alternative or mainstream. Recent emphasis on evidence-based medicine (EBM) is encouraging, but in practice EBM tends not to give enough consideration to basic science and prior probability. We need truly science-based medicine to determine whether CAM treatments really work. --- World Skeptics Congress: Promoting Science and Critical Thinking in a World of Uncertainty. Why do people turn to pseudoscience for help? What makes alternative medicine so attractive - and how can we find out what really works? Why is it so difficult for us to deal with risk and uncertainty in a rational way? Can we teach children to think critically and scientifically? And how can academic disciplines like biology or psychology protect themselves from pseudoscientific contamination? The 6th World Skeptics Congress in Berlin was an intellectually stimulating three-day event dealing with paranormal and supernatural claims, fringe science issues, and scams. Major topics at this event were science and pseudoscience in education, in particular anti-evolution claims and origin myths, and the problems of risk and benefit assessment, especially in alternative medicine. Gerd Antes, Wim Betz, Johan Braeckman, Edzard Ernst, Chris French, Luigi Garlaschelli, Harriet Hall, Ray Hyman, Chris Mooney, Simon Perry, Massimo Polidoro, James Randi, Gita Sahgal, Eugenie Scott, Simon Singh, Samantha Stein, Kylie Sturgess, Rebecca Watson and Tomasz Witkowski are just some of the world-renowned presenters who took part, taking apart the claims and conspiracies of the modern world. • http://www.worldskeptics.org/ • http://www.facebook.com/worldskepticscongress2012 • http://www.gwup.org/ • http://www.facebook.com/gwup.org --- Tags: complementary alternative placebo medicine cam fairy tale science treatments studies harriet hall homeopathy pseudoscience education skeptical rational critical thinking skepticism world skeptics congress 2012 berlin .

Popularizing Science in LIFE Magazine, 1936-1972

59:33
Popularizing Science in LIFE Magazine, 1926-1972: Wonders of Nature, Miracles of Medicine Bert Hansen, Ph.D., Professor of History, Baruch College of the City University of New York From its inception in 1936 until 1972 when it died as a weekly magazine, LIFE was one of the most potent media forces shaping Americans' visual imagery of themselves and their world. Before television, only LIFE gave to the public images that became iconic. This was especially true for medical images, prominent features in this family magazine. In this Medical Center Hour, historian Bert Hansen explores the presentation of natural wonders and medical miracles in LIFE across the magazine's lifespan and considers the implications for an educated public of such a dominant media forum. In the decades since LIFE's demise, with our views of the world no longer framed by the magazine's editors and master photographers, how have ordinary Americans come to understand science and medicine as present in and part of everyday life? What media forces now shape popular perceptions of science and medicine? Spider-Goats Wait, what?! After the inception of Spiderman in Marvel Studios, researchers at Utah State University and the University of Wyoming were inspired. They have successfully created a hybrid goat that spews out high contents of spider silk in its milk! Because that was something I was definitely missing in my life!!! We all know that the special silk gene found in spiders helps them form webs and catch their prey. Spider silk is believed to be really tough, and given its mass density, it is regarded to be even tougher than steel. The scientists were hoping to find a way to harvest spider silk on a large scale since it actually could have many different useful applications. So the university researchers found a way to incorporate a harvested spider gene into a common goat’s DNA and hallelujah it worked! The goats’ milk was later tested and high silk protein contents were found in almost 70% of the specimens. This could lead to a new range of applications in the medical as well as the automobile industry. The material can absorb about three times its body weight and can be useful for manufacturing ligaments and tendons. It can also be useful for making airbags for cars and bulletproof vests. From an ethical perspective, they say that this gene modification neither imposes any health hazards, nor any behavioral changes in the goats. We will have to wait and see... 9. Glofish: The lights out on an “Earth Hour” definitely won’t stop your colorful Glofish from glowing! Too bad its genes won’t allow it. This fish was first mutated in 1999 by Dr. Zhiywan Gong, who along with his teammates, was working on a luminesce protein in Jellyfish. The team harvested this protein and injected it into a Zebra fish’s embryo. Why?? The main motivation behind this experiment was to design a fish that could detect the presence of toxins for quantifying oceanic pollutions. In theory these scientists were trying to do something good, but I am not sure about the ethical implications, that is up for you to decide. The experiment turned out to be a huge success, both scientifically and commercially. Aquarium enthusiasts loved them, and the Glofish became the first and only genetically altered animal to exist as a domestic pet on a large scale. This glimmering fish can be made in several bright colors and is the most popular children’s choice at a pet store. These fish are able to absorb light from their surroundings and then re-emit it which gives it that captivating glow. Also if you happen to have a power outage, an aquarium with a bunch of Glofish might be helpful in case you stumble around in the dark. 8. Sudden-Death Mosquito Hate mosquitoes? You can’t kill them all, but you most certainly can stop them from multiplying. Scientists from British Biotech Company, Oxitec have developed a genetically modified mosquito that could be the end of viruses that cause millions of infections and deaths each year due to malaria, dengue, and all other kinds of diseases.. This new breed of mosquito produces flightless females and practically sterile males that either cannot reproduce or whose offspring die before reaching maturity. Oxitec released the mosquitos with the altered deadly protein onto an island. The transfer of bad genes sometimes even killed the female mosquitoes before they could reproduce, resulting in an overall decrease in the mosquito population. Hence the name “Sudden-Death”. Death for them, not for you. However, this experiment has been highly criticized by scientists and environmentalists who argue it is unethical to wipe out an entire species. There also might be huge negative effects on the ecosystem. What can be good about mosquitos? Who cares about them anyway? Well, according to Nature magazine, without mosquitos thousands of plant species would lose their pollinators and many animal species would lose their food source. However, it is very interesting that many scientists and researchers say that the niche would be filled quickly by other organisms and life might go on just as before, or even better!!! The inventors of the sudden-death mosquito argue that this project would help humans fight off deadly diseases but it is very hard to say what the consequences to the global ecosystem might be. Science of "forest bathing": fewer maladies, more well-being?

19:24
A belief that nature is good for you may sound like common sense, but in Japan researchers have taken the idea to the laboratory and produced evidence that a walk in the woods can help prevent cancer, fight obesity and reduce stress and depression. The Japanese have coined the term “shinrin-yoku”, or forest bathing, to codify the practice of exposing yourself to nature (particularly trees). The government has invested millions in both research and “forest therapy trails” - there are now 60 of them in Japan- where the forests have the sufficient density and trails are of sufficient length to provide the benefits of foresting bathing. The concept is to take a “bath” in the forest by letting nature enter all five sense. Qing Li, associate professor at the Nippon Medical School in Tokyo and president of the Japanese Society of Forest Medicine, argues that the sense of smell is most important. “The effect of forest bathing is the total effect, but the biggest effect is from the olfactory, smell, we call them phytoncides. Also people call them essential oil, aroma.” Li’s research has shown that trees’ aromas, known as phytoncides, boost our body’s NK (natural killer) cells which help fight tumors and virus-infected cells. Phytoncides are the medical equivalent of essential oils; the most effective aroma is Japanese Cypress.
