All Scientific Papers Should Be Free; Here's Why They're Not
Have you ever tried to access scientific research but the website says you have to pay? Why is that? Shouldn't information be free? Peer Review at Science Publications http://www.sciencemag.org/authors/peer-review-science-publications "For in-depth review, at least two outside referees are consulted. Reviewers are contacted before being sent a paper and are asked to return comments within 1 to 2 weeks for most papers. Reviewers may be selected to evaluate separate components of a manuscript." Vestiges of print publications in scientific journals https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/information-culture/vestiges-of-print-publication-in-scientific-journals/ "The first scientific journals were published in the late 17th century, and these print publications changed very little over time. Developments in printing technology, distribution and the advent of the commercial publisher all impacted the process, but the basic form was easily recognizable." ____________________ DNews is dedicated to satisfying your curiosity and to bringing you mind-bending stories & perspectives you won't find anywhere else! Popularizing Science in LIFE Magazine, 1936-1972
Popularizing Science in LIFE Magazine, 1926-1972: Wonders of Nature, Miracles of Medicine Bert Hansen, Ph.D., Professor of History, Baruch College of the City University of New York From its inception in 1936 until 1972 when it died as a weekly magazine, LIFE was one of the most potent media forces shaping Americans' visual imagery of themselves and their world. Before television, only LIFE gave to the public images that became iconic. This was especially true for medical images, prominent features in this family magazine. In this Medical Center Hour, historian Bert Hansen explores the presentation of natural wonders and medical miracles in LIFE across the magazine's lifespan and considers the implications for an educated public of such a dominant media forum. In the decades since LIFE's demise, with our views of the world no longer framed by the magazine's editors and master photographers, how have ordinary Americans come to understand science and medicine as present in and part of everyday life? What media forces now shape popular perceptions of science and medicine? A History of the Health Sciences Lecture Moderated by Marcia Day Childress Co-presented with the History of the Health Sciences Lecture Series

Fairy Tale Science and Placebo Medicine - Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM)
http://facebook.com/ScienceReason ... Harriet Hall with her talk "Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM): Fairy Tale Science and Placebo Medicine", World Skeptics Congress 2012 in Berlin. Introduction by Willem Betz. --- More videos of the World Skeptics Congress will be uploaded to the following channels: • http://www.youtube.com/FFreeThinker • http://www.youtube.com/ScienceTV • http://www.youtube.com/Best0fScience • http://www.youtube.com/RationalHumanism • http://www.youtube.com/WissensMagazin Please don't forget to subscribe! Playlist: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL602E2CD13B5D203C --- Harriet Hall, MD, aka "The SkepDoc," is a retired family physician and former Air Force flight surgeon who writes prolifically about science, critical thinking, alternative medicine, and quackery. She is a CSI fellow, a contributing editor to both Skeptic and Skeptical Inquirer magazines, an editor of the Science-Based Medicine blog, an adviser to the Quackwatch website, a founding fellow of the Institute for Science in Medicine, and is on the editorial review board of the Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database. --- Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is an artificial category covering a wide variety of treatments that are dubious, untested, or inadequately tested. Medicine that has been proven to work is just "medicine" -- not CAM. Science is the only reliable way to find out if a treatment really works, and proponents of CAM have recognized the need for scientific studies to support their claims. Unfortunately, good science requires more than just getting positive results from a controlled study. When therapies based on fantasy are studied with the tools of science, it produces confusing noise. Studying how much money the Tooth Fairy leaves under the pillow doesn't prove she exists. Pragmatic studies give an unfair advantage to treatments that have no specific effects but are dressed up like Cinderella with non-specific effects. Energy medicine modalities like Therapeutic Touch are a bit like the Emperor's New Clothes: they have impressed adults with apparently supporting studies; but a 9 year old child, Emily Rosa, pointed out their nakedness with a simple experiment showing that practitioners were deceiving themselves. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews are often flawed, especially when applied to improbable modalities. When science shows that a CAM treatment works no better than placebo, some CAM advocates accept the results but argue that we should use the treatment anyway, because placebos make patients feel better. This constitutes a double standard, because we wouldn't accept that argument for prescription drugs. Prescribing placebos is unethical, and placebo use can lead to harm in several different ways. There is only one science, and it must be rigorously applied to determine the effectiveness and safety of any treatment, whether alternative or mainstream. Recent emphasis on evidence-based medicine (EBM) is encouraging, but in practice EBM tends not to give enough consideration to basic science and prior probability. We need truly science-based medicine to determine whether CAM treatments really work. --- World Skeptics Congress: Promoting Science and Critical Thinking in a World of Uncertainty. Why do people turn to pseudoscience for help? What makes alternative medicine so attractive - and how can we find out what really works? Why is it so difficult for us to deal with risk and uncertainty in a rational way? Can we teach children to think critically and scientifically? And how can academic disciplines like biology or psychology protect themselves from pseudoscientific contamination? The 6th World Skeptics Congress in Berlin was an intellectually stimulating three-day event dealing with paranormal and supernatural claims, fringe science issues, and scams. Major topics at this event were science and pseudoscience in education, in particular anti-evolution claims and origin myths, and the problems of risk and benefit assessment, especially in alternative medicine. Gerd Antes, Wim Betz, Johan Braeckman, Edzard Ernst, Chris French, Luigi Garlaschelli, Harriet Hall, Ray Hyman, Chris Mooney, Simon Perry, Massimo Polidoro, James Randi, Gita Sahgal, Eugenie Scott, Simon Singh, Samantha Stein, Kylie Sturgess, Rebecca Watson and Tomasz Witkowski are just some of the world-renowned presenters who took part, taking apart the claims and conspiracies of the modern world. • http://www.worldskeptics.org/ • http://www.facebook.com/worldskepticscongress2012 • http://www.gwup.org/ • http://www.facebook.com/gwup.org --- Tags: complementary alternative placebo medicine cam fairy tale science treatments studies harriet hall homeopathy pseudoscience education skeptical rational critical thinking skepticism world skeptics congress 2012 berlin .

Dr. Khalsa of Harvard Medical School on the Science Behind Yoga
It is my distinct pleasure to bring to you one of the most prominent yoga researchers in the world - Dr. Khalsa from the Harvard Medical School. Yoga is not like the other alternative medicine/therapies that have been debunked by many academics. Dr. Khalsa is a yoga practitioner and a researcher. That may lead some among us to think of possible biases in his work, but those familiar with the academic world can tell you that this is really not possible in this type of investigation. Listening to him you will realize that yoga is not just a routine. It does have almost magical benefits as you will recognize by the end of the conversation. Indeed all of it is not yet validated but there is enough evidence for anybody to get started and literally transform one's life - physically, mentally, and emotionally - you do indeed become a better person with the yoga lifestyle. If you need scientific validation before you can be convinced for getting onto the yoga mat, or to meditate, please take time to view this video. After listening to Dr.Khalsa, there will be little doubt that yoga practice is more powerful than any other regimen. How much it can change your life remains to be understood properly but it is clear that yoga needs to be a part of our daily rituals just like brushing and bathing.

FULL MEASURE May 7, 2017 - Fake Science Pharmaceutical companies often fund scientific and medical studies to manipulate the research and get the results they desire. These industries do not focus on PREVENTION and treatment of diseases/illnesses but rather on prescribing patients with medicine and keeping them on the drugs as long as possible. Dr. Angell elaborated on how scientific journals have devolved over the years, going from vigorously fact-checked to riddled with conflicts of interest: “It used to be that way, as you describe it, pretty simple, and it began to change as the pharmaceutical industry became richer, more powerful, more influential, and began to take over the sponsorship of probably most clinical research. “I came to the New England Journal of Medicine in 1979. Starting about then was when you saw the drug companies assert more and more control until finally they over the next couple of decades, they began to treat the researchers as hired hands. “They would design the research themselves. You know you can do a lot of mischief in how you design a trial. “Or we’ll test this drug and we’ll tell you whether it can be published or not, and so if it’s a positive study, it’s published, if it’s a negative study, it’ll never see the light of day. ” An official of the company said something to the effect of, ‘we have put $30 million into that study, we have our rights,’ or something like that.” Dr. Marcia Angell left her job in New England Journal of Medicine in 2000 and in 2009 she famously wrote an article warning the public to be very skeptical of what research they read: “It is simply no longer possible to believe much of the clinical research that is published.” We’ve all heard of fake news….but now, even the cherished establishment of science seems to be fraught with fraudulence. “I think physicians and the public have come to believe that drugs are much better and much safer than they really are,” says Dr. Marcia Angell of Harvard, a pioneer in the medical journal field (who worked for the New England Journal of Medicine for 20 years as the first female Editor in Chief from 1999 to 2000). https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/196846 https://web.archive.org/web/20180103233330/https://ethics.harvard.edu/blog/demythologizing-corrupted-facts-and-claims-big-pharma A Lack Of Oversight In Drug Studies https://joedubs.com/statins-starve-the-brain/

The Limits of Medicine: A Surgeon Exposes an Imperfect Science (2002)
Atul Gawande MD, MPH (born November 5, 1965) is an American surgeon, author, and public health researcher. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0312421702/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0312421702&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=71afab9ca1f0ff5f0bfe7762e86d9306 He is a general and endocrine surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, professor in both the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard School of Public Health and the Department of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. In his work in public health, he is Executive Director of Ariadne Labs, a joint center for health systems innovation and also chairman of Lifebox, a nonprofit reducing deaths in surgery globally. Soon after he began his residency, his friend Jacob Weisberg, editor of Slate, asked him to contribute to the online magazine. His pieces on the life of a surgical resident caught the eye of The New Yorker which published several pieces by him before making him a staff writer in 1998. A June 2009 New Yorker essay by Gawande[12] compared the health care of two towns in Texas to show why health care was more expensive in one town compared to the other. Using the town of McAllen, Texas, as an example, it argued that a revenue-maximizing businessman-like culture (which can provide substantial amounts of unnecessary care) was an important factor in driving up costs, unlike a culture of low-cost high-quality care as provided by the Mayo Clinic and other efficient health systems. Ezra Klein of The Washington Post called it "the best article you'll see this year on American health care—why it's so expensive, why it's so poor, [and] what can be done."[13] The article was cited by Pres. Barack Obama during Obama's attempt to get health care reform legislation passed by the United States Congress. The article "made waves"[14] and according to Senator Ron Wyden, the article "affected [Obama's] thinking dramatically", and was shown to a group of senators by Obama, who said, "This is what we’ve got to fix."[15] After reading the New Yorker article, Warren Buffett's long-time business partner Charlie Munger mailed a check to Gawande in the amount of $20,000 as a thank you to Dr. Gawande for providing something so socially useful.[16] Gawande donated the $20,000 to the Brigham and Women's Hospital Center for Surgery and Public Health.[17] In addition to his popular writing, Gawande has published studies on topics including military surgery techniques and error in medicine, included in the New England Journal of Medicine. He is also the director of the World Health Organization's Global Patient Safety Challenge. His essays have appeared in The Best American Essays 2003, The Best American Science Writing 2002, The Best American Science Writing 2009 and Best American Science and Nature Writing 2011. Gawande published his first book, Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science, in 2002. It was a National Book Award finalist, and has been published in over one hundred countries.[18] His second book, Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance, was released in April 2007. It discusses three virtues that Gawande considers to be most important for success in medicine: diligence, doing right, and ingenuity. Gawande offers examples in the book of people who have embodied these virtues. The book strives to present multiple sides of contentious medical issues, such as malpractice law in the US, physicians' role in capital punishment, and treatment variation between hospitals.[19] Gawande released his third book, The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right, in 2009. It discusses the importance of organization and pre-planning (such as thorough checklists) in both medicine and the larger world. The Checklist Manifesto reached the New York Times Hardcover nonfiction bestseller list in 2010. Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End was released in October 2014. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atul_Gawande

Science (journal) - Medical Meaning and Pronunciation
Science (journal) Science (journal): A weekly journal concerning science. Science was founded in 1880 by one of the world's most famous scientists, Thomas Alva Edison, inventor of the light bulb. Science is the world's general scientific publication with the largest circulation. For the sake of comparison, Science's only competitor, the prestigious English journal Nature, has one third the number of subscribers worldwide. Science is published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (the AAAS). An online was version is now also available (at sciencemag.org). Science provides an unusual blend of two very different kinds of editorial material -- the most important news of the week in science and in science policy and a selection of scientific papers reporting the most significant breakthroughs in research (including many that are important to medicine). In this sense, Science is both a news magazine and a traditional scientific journal wrapped together under one cover. In addition, Science often publishes special in-depth sections on a specific topic. Some are about scientific careers. Other are on research areas -- for example, the latest developments in biotechnology, parasitology, or the genome project.
