Five secret gardens in the City of London
In the heart of London, in the global business district around St Paul’s, dedicated gardeners from the City of London Corporation tend more than 200 micro-parks in just one Square Mile. Many of this Square Mile’s 400,000 daily workers enjoy the flora and fauna through the seasons. Here five of these ‘Secret Gardens’ are introduced by the gardeners themselves. The elected City of London Corporation also runs major open spaces outside the Square Mile, including Hampstead Heath, seven commons around London, Burnham Beeches & Stoke Common and Epping Forest – for everyone in the South East to enjoy free of charge. PBS Secrets of the Dead The Lost Gardens of Babylon 720p
Secrets Of The Dead: The Lost Gardens of Babylon Of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Hanging Garden of Babylon is the most elusive of these constructions of classical antiquity. While traces have been found of the Great Pyramid of Gaza, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse of Alexandria, centuries of digging have turned up nothing about the lost gardens of Babylon – until now. Why, in the nearly 3,000 years since the gardens were presumably built, has no archeological evidence ever been found to support their existence? Is the Hanging Garden of Babylon a myth or a mystery to be solved? Travel with Dr. Stephanie Dalley of Oxford University’s Oriental Institute and author of The Mystery of the Hanging Garden of Babylon, to one of the most dangerous places on earth, as she sets out to answer these questions and prove not only that the gardens did exist, but also identify where they most likely were located, describe what they looked like and explain how they were constructed.

The Emperor's Secret Garden (2010) 乾隆花园修缮记
The fabled Forbidden City in Beijing, a 178 acre city-within-a-city, clothed in secrecy and surrounded by myth, was for centuries a tantalising mystery to the west. Isolated behind high walls for nearly five hundred years, successive rulers built up a collection of the most remarkable and opulent buildings and artworks of Chinese culture. The city became The Palace Museum when the Emperor left its sanctuary in 1924. But the city had one more secret to reveal; tucked away in the Forbidden City's north-east corner lay something different; a unique group of buildings that had lain unused and virtually untouched for more than two hundred years. In 2001, the Palace Museum and a foreign NGO, the New York-based World Monuments Fund partnered to conserve the Garden, choosing to restore Juanqinzhai (倦勤斋, the Studio of Exhaustion from Diligent Service) first. This was the first large-scale interior conservation project and the museum's first international collaboration. May 2010, China's ambassador to London, Liu Xiaoming, joined Prince Charles at a showing in the British Museum of "The Emperor's Secret Garden", a documentary sponsored by the Robert Ho Foundation of Hong Kong about the lodge's restoration. The film was aired on Sky in June. Later that year furniture and fittings from the garden also began a year-long tour of America, the first such showing outside China.

Secret of Kate Middleton's garden is revealed: Kensington Palace's 300-year-old.
Secret of Kate Middleton's garden is revealed: Kensington Palace's 300-year-old pathways were carved symbolically to align with the summer and winter solstices. The gardens of Prince William and Kate Middleton are riddled with pathways carved to symoblically align with the solstices, researchers have discovered. The 300-year-old paths wind across Kensington Palace Garden's 265 acres (107 hectares) of land. Physicists from Italy reexamined the complex networks of paths using satellite imagery and discovered that key walkways are orientated along the sunrise of the solstices. Kensington Palace, which is situated in west London, has been the home of British monarchs since 1689. The Gardens' network of paths was first drawn up in 1728. 'In origin, the Gardens were the western section of the park created by Henry VIII in 1536 for hunting purposes,' Professor Amelia Sparavigna from Polytechnic University of Turin in Italy wrote in a research paper. 'At the request of Queen Caroline, in 1728 the Kensington Gardens were separated from the Hyde Park. 'The Gardens were designed by Henry Wise and Charles Bridgeman in order to form a landscape garden, which included the Round Pond and formal avenues.' The paths in the Gardens have remained unchanged for almost 300 years. Now, researchers from Polytechnic University of Turin in Italy have discovered that the paths align with the British solstices. The summer solstice is the longest day of the year, when the sun will reach its highest point in the sky. But the spectacle could be spoilt by trees looming overhead, she said. And Kensington Palace opens to the public at 6am, which is after sunrise in the summer months. It is not clear why the Gardens' pathways were built to align with solstices. Professor Sparavigna told Live Science that she thinks that the solstice alignments were created 'for symbolic meaning, not for practical reasons.' But she is unsure as to what the symbolic meaning could be. The research was published online by the Social Science Research Network. Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk

Welcome to London - Tour around Covent Garden
Welcome to Covent Garden, London. I’m going to show you around and tell you what I know about this famous neighbourhood. Covent Garden is a popular place for tourists to visit in London, so I thought you’d like to see it. Native Londoners (like me) also go to Covent Garden just to walk around and to soak up the atmosphere. Join me as we learn about how this area was in the old days. I will tell you a little bit about the history of London -- how Covent Garden once used to be a very poor area and was considered to be a slum. You can now see how different it is -- there are many theatres and expensive shops. I wonder what it would have been like to be a flower seller in Victorian London. I had fun making this video for you -- hope you enjoy it! Take the quiz here: http://www.engvid.com/welcome-to-london-covent-garden#quiz TRANSCRIPT Hi, everyone. I'm Jade. In today's video, we're going for a walk around Covent Garden in London. It's one of London's famous areas, and it's known for entertainment and performers. So as we walk around, I'm going to tell you some of the things that I know about this area. Are you ready? Let's go. That's a cool shop! So here we are in Covent Garden. This area's really famous for theaters and street performers. And even though there are modern shops all around us and cafes, whenever I come here, I really get a sense of the old London, the London of 100 years ago or 150 years ago. At that time, too, there would have been street performers. And they would have sold roses and sung songs, songs like this, "Who will buy my sweet red roses? Such a sight you never did see." That song is from a musical called "Oliver". And that was written by Charles Dickens. So yeah. When I come to Covent Garden, I get a sense of all the history of London. Let's take a look at some of the performers. I don't know about you, but I think I've seen enough street performers now to last me a while. So I've taken you to a different part of Covent Garden because right behind me is a house where the great author Charles Dickens used to live. And do you know anything about Charles Dickens? Because he's one of our most famous writers. And he wrote at a time where London was pretty much poverty, disease, and misery for most Londoners. So we're really lucky to have the very different London that you see today. But I want to show you a part of Covent Garden so you can really imagine that time of Charles Dickens. Shoe distraction! Here we are at Seven Dials. It's a part of Covent Garden where there's a roundabout and seven streets coming off the roundabout. This place, in Victorian London, was a very different place. It was London's poorest slum. So it was one of London's worst areas. At that time, in a single house, as many as seven families lived. There was no electricity. There was no running water. So you can imagine it was a very dirty place. Also, there would have been a lot of crime around here because the families were very poor. These days, we see something really different. We see expensive boutiques. We see nice cafes. But at that time, the shops were called "rag and bone shops", and that means they didn't sell new things; they sold really, really old clothing that was almost falling apart, very, very old boots. So there was nothing new because this was a really poor area then. Because London is so old, we have secret alleyways like this. This is called "Neal's Yard", and it's actually one of my favorite places in Covent Garden because just down there, there are some cafes and really nice juice bars and things like that. But can you imagine how scary it would have been in Victorian times when all the people around here were a bit poor and a bit dodgy? But we're quite safe now. What I'm going to do now is get warm in one of those nice cafes there. And what you can do now is go and do the quiz for today's video on the EngVid website. If you enjoyed this tour around Covent Garden, thumbs up. And don't forget to subscribe. And I'd just like to say thanks for watching. See you later.

The Secret Gardens of the Open Garden Festival
Gardeners are exterior designers and the special reward that their work lives, grows and offers another look, every season. This week we head over to see just such an Eden in Franschhoek and a competitor in this year’s Open Garden Festival. This week, we feature one of the best gardens the Cape has to offer. This English country garden, with formal edging, flowing lawns and personal wine and olive farm, is something owners Clive and Joanna Venning are very proud of. Joanna’s enthusiasm was born of growing up in England where her mother is a very keen gardener and her father a farmer. For his part, Clive has owned several golf courses and is a master at lawns. Together, they boast all the skills required. The entrance to their home suggests a couple who loves to be in touch with Nature and there’s almost as much plant life inside as out. The lawns are a golfer’s dream, with the pool and terrace is awash in the healthiest looking iceberg roses. Cyprus trees lend structure and height, and while everything is laid out in scale and proportion, it never feels overly formal. The couple have also used soft, loose English plantings where possible and have avoided hard colours, going for a palette of blues, whites, pinks, purples and apricots. This is one garden that definitely proves what you put in is what you get out. Step in to this Cape Eden on Top Billing this Thursday at 7:30pm on SABC3. http://www.topbilling.com/
