Japanese Street Fashion - Raw, Harajuku

07:40
Meet Raw, a standout Japanese student at Tokyo's famous Bunka Fashion College. After playing sports in high school, Raw had a life-changing experience while experimenting with fashion. "Our Streets, My Style" is our original show taking you up close and personal with Japanese street style personalities. Meet the amazing people featured in the daily street snaps Tokyo Fashion has been publishing for over a decade. Raw on Instagram & Twitter https://www.instagram.com/lifecoming1/ https://twitter.com/coming1101 We first met Raw (Kota) on the streets of Harajuku back in 2017. We got to know him while he attended his first year at the most famous fashion school in Asia, Japan's Bunka Fashion College. Often wearing his own handmade (or at least hand modified) creations, he immediately struck us as someone who was more serious about fashion than the average Harajuku kid. During the summer of 2017, Raw scored an internship at the world famous Dog Harajuku boutique (known for their relationship with Lady Gaga as well as numerous other international celebrities and stylists) - establishing himself as one of the new faces worth watching in the Japanese street fashion scene. Now a second year student at Bunka Fashion College, Raw continues to focus on making his own outfits as well as expanding his skills in fashion styling and fashion promotion. He also spends time thinking about how modern social media impacts what fashion people wear, and how people present themselves on social media. Enjoy Raw's interview, and please leave comments if you have any thoughts or questions on what he has to say, on Bunka Fashion College, or on Harajuku. On this episode of Style Out There, our host, Connie Wang, takes us to Tokyo to meet the individuals pioneering the Harajuku subculture of Kawaii, more specifically Yami Kawaii. This style of fashion accentuates cuteness while incorporating symbols that represent death. Watch this episode of Style Out There to delve deeper into this morbid trend in Tokyo! What Harajuku Girls Really Look Like | Style Out There | Refinery29

07:50
From Gothic Lolitas to Yoyogi Rockabillies, the Tokyo neighborhood of Harajuku is a wellspring of some of the world's most unique and extreme fashion trends. Rife with restaurants, shops, and cafes, it's a hangout 'hood for the city's youth, whose style is confined to uniforms from elementary school through to high school graduation. And, perhaps to rebel from such strict sameness, they spend their weekends seeing how far they can push the limits. One of the oldest and most pervasive Harajuku style groups is Decora, characterized by a pursuit of kawaii, or "cuteness," which is expressed in massive piles of hair clips, face bandaids, creative layering, and a mishmash of colors and textures. Don't let "cute" confuse you: There's nothing delicate or elegant about Decora. It's bright, it's loud, and it's in your face (or rather, on your face, via a Hello Kitty bandaid). Though the style can appear as frivolous as a Halloween costume, there's a real statement behind the bevy of barrettes. In the face of pervasive group-mindedness, a rigid social order, and cultural reticence, the Decora have figured out a way to break free. In the first episode of our new documentary series, Style Out There, our host Asha Leo travels to Harajuku to meet with street fashion superstars, like 90884 designer Kurebayashi, Junnyan, and Shoichi Aoki, the founder of FRUiTS magazine, to peel back the rainbow-colored stickers and uncover the depth behind Decora. Japanese Street Style - Shouta, Harajuku

08:24
Meet Shouta, a 26-year-old Japanese aspiring musician, model, and actor who is active in the Harajuku street fashion scene. Shouta, who had a complex about his appearance, has tried to turn that negative into a positive through the power of fashion and music. "Our Streets, My Style" is our original show taking you up close and personal with Japanese street style personalities. Meet the amazing people featured in the daily street snaps Tokyo Fashion has been publishing for over a decade. Shouta on Instagram and Twitter: https://instagram.com/tananasho/ https://twitter.com/tananasho We first met Shouta on the streets of Tokyo's Harajuku neighborhood several years ago. The aspiring musician (he plays guitar and drums as well as singing) immediately stood out because of his bald head and minimalist oversized fashion. His passion for music - which has long been his dream - was obvious, even in our first conversations. Shouta first began visiting Harajuku after moving to Tokyo from Nagano. He told us that he used to have a complex about his appearance. After starting a band and getting more involved in fashion, he began to see the negative things that he had been focusing on as potential positives that made him unique. Over the last few years, in addition to his band, Shouta has been doing more modeling for fashion brands. His style is very "Japanese" and he wears fashion by designers - Yohji Yamamoto is his favorite - that incorporate traditional Japanese elements into their modern stylings. In addition to modeling, he has also started to do some acting in short films, something that he hopes to explore more in the future. Shouta has built a large circle of fashion-loving friends on the streets of Harajuku, which he told us helps to keep him positive when dark thoughts start to creep in. And when he can't suppress them, he tries to focus any negativity into song writing for his band. Even though he told us that he has a "gloomy" side, Shouta is someone who we always enjoy meeting on the street, and we hope that you'll enjoy his interview as well! Follow Shouta on Instagram to see more of his life, music, and modeling. You can also ask him questions directly via her social media accounts. Please leave comments in the YouTube comments if you have suggestions for future episodes of this show. Thank you for watching and for supporting Japanese street fashion. Japanese Street Fashion - Harajuku Tour of Takeshita Street in Tokyo Japan

06:02
Takeshita Street (竹下通り Takeshita-dōri) is a pedestrian shopping street lined with fashion boutiques, cafes and restaurants in Harajuku in Tokyo, Japan. Stores on Takeshita Street include major chains such as The Body Shop, McDonald's, and 7-Eleven, but most of the businesses are small independent shops that carry an array of styles. The shops on this street are often a bellwether for broader fads, and some are known as "antenna shops," which manufacturers seed with prototypes for test-marketing. Located directly across from the exit of JR East's Harajuku Station, Takeshita Street is very popular with young teenagers, particularly those visiting Tokyo on school trips, or local young people shopping for small "cute" goods at weekends.

Japanese Street Fashion - Beni, Harajuku

06:40
Meet Beni, a Japanese high school student with a love of dance and art. On the streets of Harajuku, Beni discovered that fashion helped her to express herself, make new friends, and grow as a person. "Our Streets, My Style" is our original show taking you up close and personal with Japanese street style personalities. Meet the amazing people featured in the daily street snaps Tokyo Fashion has been publishing for over a decade. Beni on Instagram & Twitter https://www.instagram.com/beni9s/ https://twitter.com/beniemily9s We first met Beni on the streets of Harajuku in the spring of 2017. She was a Japanese high school student who dressed mostly in trendy styles sold by popular boutiques in the famous Tokyo neighborhood. As we got to know more about her, we learned that Beni was an aspiring artist, and that she had also been involved in dance (both ballet and modern dance) since she was very young. Having been interested in creative expression through art and dance since she was a child, we were not surprised to see Beni dive deeper into fashion as another medium to express herself. As she spent more time in Harajuku, Beni's personal style began to move away from trendy shops and toward independent designers, vintage shops, and experimental looks. Beni also began to make new friends on the streets of Harajuku - creative young people from all over Tokyo who shared her love of fashion and who have similar dreams and ambitions. When she first arrived in Harajuku, she didn't know anyone in the neighborhood. By the spring of 2018, Beni had built a large new family of friends, acquaintances, and creative collaborators - a group of kids who inspire and support each other in fashion and in life. Beni's story is similar to the story of many other Harajuku kids who visit Harajuku casually at first, and then discover a deeper love of fashion - and a new group of creative friends. We hope that you'll enjoy hearing about this evolution first hand from a real Harajuku girl. If you have questions for Beni, feel free to ask her by commenting on her personal Instagram. Japanese Street Fashion - Shoshi, Harajuku

06:15
Meet Shoshi, a well-known Japanese street style icon and aspiring select shop owner. Shoshi's life was changed forever after discovering a passion for fashion on the streets of Harajuku. "Our Streets, My Style" is our original show taking you up close and personal with Japanese street style personalities. Meet the amazing people featured in the daily street snaps Tokyo Fashion has been publishing for over a decade. Shoshi on Instagram and Twitter: https://instagram.com/we_can_do_anything/ https://twitter.com/_BABYSLUT_ We first met Shoshi (aka Shoushi or Shoshipoyo) on the streets of Harajuku over five years ago. At that time, Shoshi - who prefers the pronoun they/them - was a Japanese high school student trying out different styles to find out who they were. In addition to their love of fashion, Shoshi was (and is) passionate about music. Shoshi counts Brooke Candy and Lady Gaga as two artists who've inspired them. Over the years, we watched Shoshi's style and interests evolve. After graduating from high school and enrolling in Tokyo's most famous Fashion School, Bunka Fashion College, their unique style and personality began inspiring a younger generation of Harajuku kids, establishing Shoshi as an icon of the Japanese street fashion scene. Recent years have seen Shoshi travel to Europe and America, collaborate with international creatives, work at one of Tokyo's most influential boutiques (Dog Harajuku), graduate from Bunka Fashion College, and flirt with the launch of their own online select shop. Shoshi's future plans are far from clear, as Shoshi is always in motion and full of dreams and ambitions. What is clear is that wherever Shoshi goes from here, their time spent on the streets of Harajuku changed their life forever - for the better. Follow Shoshi on Instagram if you'd like to keep up with their adventures. You can also ask them questions directly via their social media linked above. Please leave comments in the YouTube comments if you have suggestions for future episodes of this show. Thank you for watching and for supporting Japanese street style. Japanese Street Style & J-Pop - Asachill, Harajuku

07:24
Meet Asachill, a Japanese singer from Kyoto who performs as a "Monster Girl" at Tokyo's most famous Kawaii-themed cafe. Asachill sees Harajuku as a place full of opportunity where dreams can come true. "Our Streets, My Style" is our original show taking you up close and personal with Japanese street style personalities. Meet the amazing people featured in the daily street snaps Tokyo Fashion has been publishing for over a decade. Asachill on Instagram & Twitter https://www.instagram.com/asachill/ https://twitter.com/asachill065 https://asachill.storeinfo.jp/ J-pop singer Asachill moved to Tokyo over three years ago. When we first met her on the streets of Tokyo, she stood out with her futuristic style and strong personality. Asachill is well known in the Harajuku fashion scene today as one of the "Monster Girls" at the famous Kawaii Monster Cafe. She calls herself a "Kyoto Pop Icon" and her biggest aspiration is to become a popular singer. Asachill was born in one of Japan's most historic cities, Kyoto. Her family has run a traditional Obanzai restaurant in Kyoto's entertainment district Ponto-cho for over 70 years. When she was a little girl, Asachill was surrounded by traditional Japanese food, culture, and fashion, including seeing people wearing kimono every day. This lifelong exposure to tradition continues to influence her own fashion, music, and life. Working as a performer in Harajuku on a daily basis, Asachill believes the neighborhood is full of opportunities. Creative people from all walks of Japanese life are drawn to Harajuku, not just those interested in fashion. While Asachill loves fashion, her primary focus remains music, and the people she has met in Harajuku have helped her along that path. While Asachill's journey - from traditional Kyoto culture to becoming a Kawaii Monster Girl and J-Pop singer in Tokyo - is unique, her story of finding creative inspiration, support, connections and opportunities on the streets of Harajuku is shared by countless creative Harajuku kids. Please check out the interview to hear Asachill's story in her own words. If you'd like to ask her any questions or know more, please leave comments or contact her directly via her social media links above. Japanese Street Fashion - Dice-K, Harajuku

05:09
Meet Dice-K, a young Japanese fashion designer and creative whose brand GlamHate celebrates vampires, glam - and hate! "Our Streets, My Style" is our original show taking you up close and personal with Japanese street style personalities. Meet the amazing people featured in the daily street snaps Tokyo Fashion has been publishing for over a decade. Dice-K on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dice_kkkk/ https://www.instagram.com/glamhate/ https://glamhate.xyz We first met Dice-K at a Lady Gaga concert in Tokyo nearly five years ago. Since then, they enrolled in - and recently graduated from - one of Japan's most prestigious universities, launched their own fashion brand, and evolved in so many ways (both aesthetic and personal). Over the years, we've been ever impressed not only by Dice-K's style, but also their thoughtful consideration of fashion, life, and the intersection of the two. When we sat down with Dice-K on the street in Harajuku this week, they were very open about their personal history and their current feelings on fashion and life. Dice-K is about to release the second collection of their own brand GlamHate. The new GlamHate collection is called "VAMPYRE", but it's not meant in the old fashioned way. Dice-K explains (in the video) that the vampire concept is related to the way fashion trends spread through social media. Popular influencers are vampires who infect others on social media with their taste, and those newly created vampires spread the trends to others. The number of vampires infected by these fashion trends grow exponentially and uncontrollably around the globe. Please watch the interview video to find out more about Dice-K in their own words. Also - if you are in Japan, Dice-K would love to meet you in person at the exhibition for the new GlamHate "VAMPYRE" collection in Tokyo from April 19-22, 2018 at ShibuyaRoom. Japanese Street Fashion Interview - Rikarin, Harajuku

04:37
Meet Rikarin, a kawaii-loving Japanese college student who plans to keep Harajuku in her heart no matter where life takes her. "Our Streets, My Style" is our original show taking you up close and personal with Japanese street style personalities. Meet the amazing people featured in the daily street snaps Tokyo Fashion has been publishing for over a decade. Rikarin on Instagram & Twitter: https://instagram.com/rikarin0526/ https://twitter.com/rikarin0526 We first met Rikarin when she was a Japanese high school student participating in the once-a-month Harajuku Fashion Walk event. In her early Harajuku days - nearly 5 years ago - she most often dressed in super colorful Japanese decora or fairy kei style fashion. Having attended international school, Rikarin stood out from the crowd as one of the only Japanese kids who could speak English and easily make friends with foreign Harajuku Fashion Walk participants. Her bright sunny personality and sense of humor also helped her to make fast friends with people from Japan and around the world. The famous Harajuku kawaii brand 6%DOKIDOKI has been Rikarin's favorite fashion brand for as long as we have known her. While her style has evolved from decora over the years, Rikarin continues to incorporate kawaii elements - and 6%DOKIDOKI items - into her looks. After graduating from high school, Rikarin attended one of Japan's most prestigious universities and held part-time jobs at several popular Harajuku shops. All of these experiences - aalong with watching lots of other kids arrive and depart the street fashion scene - have given Rikarin more perspective on Harajuku. For the last year, she has been working on a college project documenting the Harajuku experience. As she enters her final year of college, Rikarin has begun Japan's traditional career-hunting phase. For most students of top schools here in Japan, that means dyeing your hair black and wearing a black suit while attending nearly indistinguishable interviews at distinguished Japanese companies. Rikarin is hoping to break that mold, working hard to find a career that both pays the bills and allows her to celebrate her love of all things colorful and happy. Harajuku has been a key part of making Rikarin the person she is today. She's sure that she'll keep the spirit of Harajuku alive inside of her forever - no matter where life may take Rikarin in the future. 15 Amazing Kimono Inspired Japanese Street Fashion Looks

03:45
Traditional Japanese kimono gets remixed with kawaii, cyber, goth, and other subcultures on the streets of Tokyo. Kimono - which Japanese people have been wearing for over one thousand years - are Japan's most iconic fashion item. Japanese people still wear kimono on special occasions and holidays, but traditional kimono (except for summer yukata) are worn less now than they were several generations ago. In Japan today, other types of fashion may have replaced kimono as daily wear, but creative young Japanese people are finding ways to incorporate elements of the kimono into modern street styles. From gothic kimono to cyber/rave style, to kimono mixed with super kawaii accessories, to the adoption of the kimono by many in Japan's shironuri (white makeup) subculture, kimono remains a strong influence in the modern Japanese fashion scene. We love kimono and we wanted to share fifteen of the amazing kimono-inspired styles that we have seen on the streets of Harajuku over the last few years. Please enjoy these looks and let us know what you think of young people taking elements of kimono and remixing it with their own unique styles. Japanese Street Fashion - Sakuran, Harajuku

08:18
Sakuran is an 18-year-old Japanese fashion student known for her one-of-a-kind remake outfits. She grew up in a small town 1,000 km from Tokyo, but eventually discovered her love of extreme fashion on the streets of Harajuku. "Our Streets, My Style" is our original show taking you up close and personal with Japanese street style personalities. Meet the amazing people featured in the daily street snaps Tokyo Fashion has been publishing for over a decade. Sakuran on Instagram and Twitter: https://instagram.com/sakuran_is_/ https://twitter.com/sakuran_is_ When we first met Sakuran, she was a high school student living in a small town in Japan's norther most prefecture, Hokkaido. She was on a visit to Tokyo when a shop owner told us to drop everything and come to his shop right away. He had a new customer who we absolutely must meet. We rushed over and were greeted by a young Japanese woman - dressed in handmade fashion, silver platform boots, and a painted face - the likes of which we had never seen. Though young, it was clear Sakuran was one of a kind from our first meeting. She threw all rules out the window and wore what she wanted to wear, regardless of how extreme it might look compared to other fashion on the street. Over the next year, we got to know her during her regular visits to Harajuku. She worked at a part time job in Hokkaido, saved up money for several months, then spent all of that money to visit Tokyo for a weekend. In addition to her fashion, we were impressed with her determination to be part of the Harajuku fashion scene a thousand kilometers away. Over the next year Sakuran became friends with many Harajuku kids, shop staff, and other Tokyo street style personalities. Her confidence and styling skills also evolved as she grew closer to graduation from high school. Eventually, she graduated from her small town high school and was accepted into the honors program at Tokyo's Vantan Fashion College. Now a student at Vantan in Tokyo and working part time at a popular independent Harajuku select shop, Sakuran remains fiercely unique. She dreams of being a designer, and wants to encourage other people to find what's unique inside of themselves and amplify it. Follow Sakuran on Instagram to see more of her art and colorful fashion. You can also ask her questions directly via her social media accounts. Please leave comments in the YouTube comments if you have suggestions for future episodes of this show.
