How Do I Build a Brand? Your business won’t survive because it has a cool logo. But it will survive if it has a cool logo AND a mission that people identify with. Building a brand is all about making that identity. It’s about who you are and the rules your company follows to always be true to that identity. When you go to market, people start to think and feel things about your company. Building a brand through an identity will allow you to be in control of that voice and define what people feel is true about you. It allows you to declare what it feels like to be part of your brand, to start making it desirable to become part of the tribe of your brand, and to garner an audience based on that feeling. The stronger the identity, the stronger the loyalty and instant recognition. Start to do this is by thinking about why your company exists. Go to the mission and make a list of the things your company feels passionately about. Outline the things your company stands for. Take that list and get feedback on it from people invested in your vision. Now, take some time to think about what feeling you want to inspire in people, known as a brand promise. This stands outside your product, although people should make the leap to your product easily. For example, Nike’s is “to bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world” and Coca-cola’s is to “refresh the world in mind, body and spirit and inspire moments of optimism.” Everyone, while engaging with anything Nike should feel the empowerment and anyone who engages with Coke should feel like it brings happiness. These companies use this identity as a foundation and craft and reinforce it in every marketing piece they do without fail. To keep your marketers on track with the identity you create, you need to take the identity you’ve created and give them a way to measure their work against it. Marketers need clear brand guidelines to follow and use against the things they create that are crucial for consistency following your identity. This is key. Without it, your consumers will feel brand dissonance, when they come expecting one thing they’ve seen before and instead get something else. It’s hard for people to become loyal to something, when it’s constantly changing faces and messages. Give them something consistent and recognizable, that they can easily register with you and your brand identity.

We are constantly bombarded with so many icons and logos that we rarely stop to look further into them, but there are some very interesting and bizarre secrets hiding within these 10 famous logos! 1. Hyundai Bet you think the H logo is just the first letter of the South Korean car manufacturer Hyundai? Of course you do! But it actually represents two figures: the happy client shaking hands with the Hyundai salesman, cleverly projecting the subliminal message of a successful car purchase. 2. Apple It was Rob Janoff who was tasked with creating the apple logo back in 1977. Janoff bought a bag of apples and spent the week sketching them, trying to represent the perfect angle where the fruit couldn´t be mistaken for a cherry. This was when he added a bite mark and stumbled across the similarity between Bite and Byte. This was definitely a selling point for Steve Jobs. 3. Vaio The first two letters in the computer company's name symbolize a digital waveform and the io is designed to look like a 1 and a 0, representing binary and the mix of analog and digital. Also the melody that sounds on startup actually derives from the dialtone sounds on a telephone keypad on typing V-A-I-O 4. Amazon Always aiming to please, Amazon designed their logo to represent a smile, projecting a sense of satifaction in their brand. Not only that, but the arrow also starts at ´a´ and finishes at 'z' implying that the company stocks every product you could possibly desire. 5. Toyota T-o-y-o-t-a. All the letters of the companies name can be found within the logo. But what does it represent? You're thinking A big strong buffalo's head or a cowboy with a hat, right? Wrong! It actually represents a needle and thread! This Japanese car manufacturer actually began making weaving machines and keeps its logo to this day! 6. Continental Sometimes overlooked, the continental logo is simple and clever. The first two letters are designed to symbolize a car wheel. 7. Toblerone This awkward-to-eat chocolate treat doesn't just have a simple mountain in its logo. Toblerone is made in Bern, Switzerland, so it´s no surprise to see one of the Swiss alps in its logo. But it also hides a secret bear hidden in the mountain, as Bern is known as the city of bears and the bear symbol is heavily decorated throughout the city. 8. BMW The German motor company started out making airplanes in 1916 and many think that the checker pattern in its logo represents the spinning propellers of an airplane. But it is actually just the design of the Bavarian flag, the part of Germany where the company originated. 9. Domino's Pizza In 1960 College dropout Tom Monaghan borrowed $900 to by a tiny pizza placed called Dominic's. 5 years later he bought 2 more locations. The former owner refused Tom the permission to use his name in the franchise so Tom turned it into Domino's. The dice in the logo represent the first restaurant that he bought, followed by the next two, and he had planned on adding numbers on every new opening. That was before he realized how big the franchise would become. 10. Unilever Who is Unilever, right? It's actually a huge corporation which owns over 400 famous brands. You've only got to look on the back of any of these popular products to find their logo hiding there. (Axe, Lipton, Ben and Jerry's, Dove, Heartbrand, Hellman's) But that's not all, the actual unilever logo is made up of 25 smaller logos, each with a rich meaning. We have received a fantastic question about business Logo or branding from Lisa Blanchard Pattendon today, who is starting up a new business and has asked what should come first... her logo or her brand? This is a fantastic question Lisa, which is asked regularly as many people know they are both important to business growth and marketing, but there isn't a great deal of clarity about the difference between the two. Whilst this is a big subject, I can hopefully throw some light on it for you! Quite simply your logo is your trust mark and the face of your business. It should be an easily identifiable icon, which is made up of shapes, fonts and colours that that will uniquely position and differentiate you from your competition. When designed well, it will represent you consistently across every touch-point that your customers and future prospects ever come into contact with. Your brand on the other hand is intangible and not something physical like your logo is. It's the emotional recipe and connection that builds up the relationship between you, your prospects and your customers. It's your 'brand' story that connects people emotionally to your product or service and gives them such positive feelings about your business that they will buy into you and invest in building a relationship with you. Your logo and brand combined together communicate the promise you make to deliver your product or service to your customers. When you get it right you will have a very powerful proposition indeed! You can change a logo as many times as you like, but if your brand doesn't have a good reputation for delivering on your promises then no amount of facelifts will ever change the perception of your brand. This is why if a company treats people badly and simply 'rebrands' with a new logo, it isn't enough because it is actually the brand itself that has been damaged. Remember... your brand isn't what you say it is. It is what your customers say it is. You know you have a brand when you have lots of customers talking about you to other people and referring you to new customers. Think Apple for example. People go out and buy the latest Apple gadget even though they have no need for it whatsoever and it's because they have such a strong brand and loyal followers that they could sell pretty much anything to them once they've bought into the brand. Apple's logo is of course important because when you see it you automatically know what it represents. However, the logo wouldn't mean very much without the credibility of the brand behind it and the positive associations you connect with it when you see the logo. So when you are receiving referrals and business through word of mouth referral, that's when you know you, are starting to build a credible brand. So in answer to this question about whether to create the logo or the brand first, I really wouldn't advise you wait until you've built your brand before creating the face of your business as your logo will help you create the vital recognition required to position you uniquely to your competitors while you continue build your brand. As I said at the beginning of this post, creating a brand strategy for your business so you have a really good brief for your designer isn't a 5 minute job as it's a big subject. No, nuh-uh, wrong. The truth is branding is from marketers and business owners. Branding takes place at every touchpoint, every interaction with the consumer, and every time they think of your brand. Most importantly, branding is ultimately controlled by the customers. Too many companies think that they get to choose their brand while you only really get to influence how your customer sees you, not the other way around. It's about telling people what your company stands for and getting them to stand behind the ideals of your business. Then we have brand essence. Now this is when we get to your company's core values. What principles will shape your company's culture? Now, many companies out there will claim to differentiate themselves with values like, we're transparent. We have have a great company culture, there's no company out there like us. Okay, okay, well done, fine. These unique core values that so many companies profess kind of become the standard for tech start-ups. Which is good, it just means that we can all stop stating the obvious and look for really unique, new, fantastic ways to differentiate ourselves. It's time to show instead of tell. Think of what truly unique values you have and build them into your company culture from day one. And finally, brand differentiation. Copying the same strategy as another company is the tactic reserved by those most dastardly of villains who just aren't creative enough to come up with their own ideas. Don't be a copycat. Originality is way more fun. This all comes back to defining your unique selling point, your USP. What does your brand have that others don't? And how can you position your company in a way that it can't be replicated? Marketing Minute 123 "Five Ways to Build Your Brand" (Brand Marketing / Brand Strategy)

When it comes to marketing, a strong brand is a powerful asset. Whether it’s your product brand, your organizational brand, or your own personal brand, considerable effort should be spent developing your brand image in a manner that resonates with your desired target audiences. When customers purchase a particular brand or use that brand’s services, they’re often acquiring much more than a product or using much more than a service. They’re associating themselves with an image or reputation that can both reflect and represent their own image. Because of this, your brand positioning needs to be clear enough to portray positive attributes, yet flexible enough to respond to marketplace evolutions. You have to consider not only what your target audiences want right now, but also what they’ll want over the next 5 or 10 or 20 years. Too strong of a focus on the current needs and desires of your audience might put your brand in a situation where your audience will, in essence, outgrow your brand. To build a long-term branding strategy, consider the following five concepts: First, develop your brand from the inside out. Your brand is not merely your company name, your logo, your color scheme, your slogan, or your product line. Think of your brand more as your reputation and your image than what you portray on the surface. Build your brand image by providing the type of products, services, and experiences at the levels of quality, speed, innovation, etc. for which you’ll want to be known. Second, build your brand with conviction, but allow it to have the flexibility to grow and change over time. People change, and if your brand doesn’t change with the marketplace, it runs the risk of becoming obsolete. Building your brand on evergreen concepts like compassion, quality, innovation, and other positive concepts is something to consider, but remember that there should also be a clear connection with filling a need that your audience experiences. This leads to the third concept: focus your brand attributes more on your customer experiences than on your product offerings. Fulfilling needs, helping people succeed, removing obstacles, creating memories, etc. are much more likely to resonate with audiences than relating a brand to mere product attributes. Yet, your brand still needs to be recognized as being related to a particular set of problem-solving tools if those are what are sought by your target audiences. Fourth, don’t be afraid of allowing your brand to have different meanings to different audience segments. Some people may see your brand as representing primarily innovation while others see it as customer service while even others see it as consistent quality. You can’t be everything to everyone and you shouldn’t try. It’s beneficial to have a multi-faceted brand and to communicate particular facets differentially to different audience segments. Finally, a great brand strategy needs to include a set of storylines that can be woven in, out, around, and through your product offerings, your people, and your audiences, with the details of each story developing from multiple engagement experiences. Sometimes your team may be the impetus of a new story and sometimes it may come from somewhere else. You need to be agile in your storytelling so that you can pick up quickly on a storyline that may help to enhance the image of your brand. Ken Steele explores the value of a strong college or university brand: to attract students and faculty from outside the immediate region, to build goodwill and trust, to be top of mind, to command a premium price point, or to build a tribal following of raving fans. A visual identity is a critical piece of graphic design that distills a college or university's mission, vision, and values, and should be the cornerstone of its visual style for years. Ken also reviews some trends in college logo redesigns over the past decade to identify the telltale signs your brand identity is nearing its expiry date: dated colours like forest green and navy blue, swooshes like the Jetson's from the 1950s, serif typefaces, 1960s halftone effects, and literal imagery. New college visual identities are likely to drop the word "college" or even drop to an acronym, they are likely to use blue, neon green or bright orange in their colour palettes. Static square outlines are being replaced with much curvier visuals, and all the cool brands are getting custom-designed wallpapers and textures to go with their visual identities. Ken also predicts some of the colleges likely to redesign their logos in the next few years, based on these trends. Then ask these questions: What does it say about the customer that they use your brand? What is the singular thing that the customer gets from your brand? And how do you make that customer become the hero in their own story? The key to building strong brands is knowing how to help your customer. Once you can do this, you can make your brand exclusive. In her words, you can “put up a velvet rope.” Deb only works with brands that are the best customers and willing to work hard to align their values. This exclusivity creates desire in the marketplace. You should be targeting your brand at ONLY your ideal customer. This will make your job much easier because it’ll give you a target to hit. By the way, the importance of personal branding and the methods that Deb imparts are applicable to one-on-one selling. By getting to know your ideal customer, you will have a much easier time crafting your message and getting in their path when the time comes. Successfully building strong brands comes down to understanding your ideal customer. The importance of personal branding is that you can target a highly specific category of people and aim all of your efforts at them. This will save you time and energy and help you to sell more.
