Underwater Dolphins - Increasing Rate

When working on your underwater dolphins, experimenting with rate may be the big change you've been looking for. Why do it: You can't work on your underwater dolphins enough, but only working on how many you take off each wall may limit your ability to really find that perfect underwater. Experimenting with how quickly you take your kicks can also make big changes. How to do it: 1 - We use a Tempo Trainer to determine the regular rate of the swimmer, matching the rate to the swimmer. 2 - Next we start to increase the rate of the Tempo Trainer, making the swimmer match the rate of the beep to each dolphin kick. By increasing the rate, we will also reduce the amplitude, or wave size of each kick. This can also help to reduce resistance introduced by younger swimmers who are just trying to create BIG kicks. 3 - Time yourself to a mark on the bottom of the pool to see just what mix of kick rate, or size of kick, and number of kicks gets you to that spot the quickest. How to do it really well (the fine points): To add to this challenge, once you get to a rate that gets you to that mark the quickest, put on a pair of fins. Match the new rate with the fins. The increased surface area of the fins will make it more difficult to match that rate. It will either require more power, or again, experimenting with reducing the size of the kick to match the rate. This searching, and ability to adapt by the swimmer, will continue, or introduce subtle variations athletes will need to learn to maximize their performance. When adding resistance at high speeds, as we're adding fins, be careful to focus this "fine point" on more mature and physically ready athletes. These intense parts of drills are not intended for athletes that are too young, or too old. They are, however, sometimes a necessary part of training high level athletes. Use common sense and if you're the athlete, listen to your body to protect against any potential injury. If it hurts in a bad way, stop doing it.

Knowing how to swim smooth freestyle is essential for lap swimmers, triathletes, open water swimmers, waterpolo players, crossfit athletes and basically anyone wanting to swim as a workout. The first thing to note is the position of the body. The more horizontal your body is, the easier it will be to swim though the water without a lot of resistance. The main issue people have is that their legs sink. To compensate they start kicking faster, then they get tired and their legs sink. The next thing to master is to reduce excess drag. Advanced swimmers actually use very little energy to go forward while swimming smooth freestyle. This is because they have reduced the drag of their bodies as much as possible. One big part of it is the legs. Try to avoid bending your knees too much. For smooth freestyle doing a few narrow kicks, maybe one or two per stroke, should be enough to keep your legs a float. Finally point your ankles in plantar flexion, this will reduce your drag a substantial amount and will help you swim smoothly. If you want to take your smooth freestyle to the next level, work on your core. It will give you stabilization for a better horizontal position. Work also one your flexibility. This will give you a better range of motion and reduce drag. EASIEST WAY TO SWIM FREESTYLE

There are a lot of “common” mistakes that swimmers make in their everyday training that winds up effecting them down the line. These often result in laziness or bad habits, and wind up influencing a swimmer in both time and efficiency. Today we are going over a simple fix to your freestyle will improve it dramatically. We call this drill, the finger tip drag. Finger tip drag is super simple. All your going to do is swim a somewhat normal freestyle (leaning more towards a catch up stroke), but when you are recovering your arm in your freestyle stroke you are going to keep your fingers on the surface and skim the water. This forces you to keep your elbows as high in the air as possible which winds up putting you into the perfect position to generate a powerful next stroke. This is a drill that you can do often and at high volume as it is as close to a normal freestyle stroke as possible. You must make a conscious choice to make this change in your stroke, but when you do you will notice a HUGE improvement! As usual, Let us know what you think of this weeks drill! If you just started learning this stroke, you might need some advice to make the process a little bit easier. First of all, there are two kicks while swimming butterfly: the first kick occurs during the catch phase and the other one during the finish. Make sure to keep legs together and move both arms at the same time. Second kick is usually performed stronger in order to help arms fly above the water. Second of all, keep in mind that butterfly is the hardest stroke in swimming and requires power along with good flexibility in shoulders. Work on your biceps, triceps, abs, and lower body (squads and jumps) as well as increasing flexibility. The form of your freestyle kick will determine how fast you can move. To have a very effective kick you need to have amazing ankle flexibility. The more you have the less drag you will create. And the opposite is true, just look how I don’t move with my ankles like this. Also the knees need to be a little bent while going down and straight while going up. To do this you need to relax your hamstrings and activate your quads while the leg goes down and while it is going up activate your glutes, hamstrings, and calves. After you learn to have a good form when kicking you need to perfect the tempo of your kick. This can vary depending on the distance you are swimming but the most common tempo is 6 kicks for every 2 strokes. That is 3 kicks with one leg while one arm does one stroke cycle. The timing of the kicks is very important too. Because of the rotation and the movement of the muscles in your core, it is better if the right leg goes down when the left arm enters the water. while it is gliding you do another kick and use that momentum to start the pull while the leg comes down again. When you swim freestyle, the most effective thing you can do after the turn is to do several butterfly or dolphin underwater kicks. This carries the speed of your push. but the problem most people have is they lose that speed in the transition from uw kicks to freestyle kicks. The first few freestyle kicks are extremely important. They need to be fast and they need to start before the arms start moving. Swim smoother and breathe easier in freestyle with shoulder rotation

When swimming freestyle one of the main problems beginners have is the lack of rotation in the stroke. in this video We will analyze why it is important to rotate and we will post a video of drills to help you rotate correctly later on. The main benefit of rotating is to prevent shoulder injury. When you rotate, your shoulder is in a better position to recover. If you don’t rotate then you will be overextending this part of your shoulder. If you do rotate, the whole arm will be more relaxed and you will have more power to use where it matters most, the pull. While your head is steady, your whole body is rotating. Except when you are breathing. When you breathe your head rotates with your body, allowing your mouth to stick out of the surface to take a breath. It is a lot easier to breathe when your body rotates. So if you are having trouble breathing in freestyle, the lack of rotation might be one reason why. Another benefit is that when you rotate, you are in a better position to pull water using bigger muscles. When you position your body like this your back and chest muscles will be ready to pull, as opposed to just using your shoulder muscles. The bigger the muscles the more powerful your pull will be and the faster you will swim. The last benefit is that you’ll be able to swim smoother. By rotating you will be able to glide more. The more you glide effectively the less strokes you will need to do per lap. With your core muscles you will be applying a torque force to move forward. All of this to say, I strongly suggest that you rotate when you swim freestyle. And I will show you how to practice your rotation in a future video, so make sure to subscribe. Swimming fast is a combination of fitness and technique, one is about physical hard work the other more mental. We are going to be looking into the catch part of front crawl and showing how you can improve this important part of the stroke. The stroke starts with the catch where your hand enters the water, the pull is the main underwater phase, the exit is as sounds, when your hand and arm come out of the water then the recovery is your arm coming over the surface of the water and back past your head. Without a good catch the rest of the stroke is going to struggle, getting hold of the water at the front of the stroke is vital for a strong pull. But what exactly is this part of the swim stroke we are talking about. The catch is when your hand enters the water at the front of the stroke; when your movement changes from moving forwards to pulling back and down under your body. The moment when your hand and forearm start to make this new movement is the catch, in theory you are “catching” this new body of water. There are basically two ways to swim fast freestyle. By fast freestyle we refer to a distance of 25 or 50 meters or yards. There is the straight arm and the classic arm. The straight arm fast freestyle has become popular among sprinters. In both techniques there is little need to rotate the shoulders as the arms move so fast that rotating a lot would be a waste of time. To do a fast freestyle it is essential that you kick as fast as you can. There should be water splashing behind you as if you had a motor. In a 50 freestyle there is very little margin of error, that is why you need an explosive start and flip turn. Finally, very often you can win or lose by a tenth of a second so a good final touch can make you win the race. The final stroke is a little longer than the rest. You stretch your body as fast and far as you can, rotating more to your side. You should touch with your fingers not with the palm of your hands. Just strong enough to activate the touch pad but not strong enough that you injure your fingers. This takes practice to master, so start slow and build up speed to touch the wall properly. 5 Freestyle drills to help you swim smooth

Wether you are a beginner or an elite swimmer, you can always benefit from doing drills, that is because your stroke will never be perfect. Having said that, there are some common mistakes that most of us do during our freestyle technique. So we will go over some drills to fix them. 1- Finger tip drag 2- 3 strokes and glide 3- Glide rotate glide 4- Underwater recovery 5- Sculling high elbow Finger tip drag This drill will help you keep a high elbow when you recover the arm. This will also help you feel the water and give you immediate feedback as to where your hand is entering the water. You should also keep a relaxed wrist and fingers to save up energy. This high elbow recovery is the most effective way to carry your arm back in front. 3 strokes and glide Gliding is an important part of the stroke, specially in distances over a 100. Doing 3 strokes and gliding for about 6 kicks will help you improve your gliding position. Notice the position of your hands and head and adjust if they causing frontal drag. Glide rotate glide Some of us don’t rotate enough. This goes hand in hand with the gliding. You need a good rotation in order to glide and to grab more water with each stroke. So practice gliding and rotating your shoulders, then come back and rotate again before taking your next stroke. Underwater recovery This will help you feel the frontal drag. It will help your body understand the importance of the pull. Try to optimize your pull by grabbing all the water you can while reducing the frontal drag of your other arm by positioning your hand to be always pointing to the front. Sculling High elbow To pull water backwards from the beginning of your stroke, you must have a high elbow on the first part of the stroke. So try sculling three times and not moving your elbow. Backstroke Technique. The movement of the arms in backstroke is somewhat unique. However, the most important movement of the stroke is the shoulders and hip rotation. In this video we will talk about the rotation, so subscribe in order to watch the next video in which we will go over the hand movement. The rotation of the shoulders in backstroke is a especially important technique for two reasons: 1- Because it helps prevent shoulder injury. When you rotate you set yourself in a better angle, preventing overextension of certain shoulder muscles and using bigger back muscles to help you pull. 2- You can generate more speed with the counter-rotation of the opposite shoulder that will work as a lever to help the other arm’s pull. While doing the rotation it is very important to keep your head still. The best drill to practice this technique is the “cup on the forehead”. The hips will rotate at the same time as the shoulders. They should be riding high in the water to create as little resistance as possible. It is important to coordinate the feet with the rotation of the body so they don’t hit each other. When you swim make sure your arms are not passing your middle body line, or else you will be swimming like a snake all around the lane.
