The Independent

18:08
The Independent is a British national morning newspaper published in London by Independent Print Limited, owned by Alexander Lebedev since 2010. Nicknamed the Indy, it was launched in 1986 and is one of the youngest UK national daily newspapers. The daily edition was named National Newspaper of the Year at the 2004 British Press Awards. The current editor, Amol Rajan, was appointed in 2013, and its deputy editor, Archie Bland, in 2012. Bland was one of the youngest people to be appointed to a senior managerial post in the British newspaper industry, at 28 years old. Rajan was not quite 30 at the time of his appointment in June 2013. Originally a broadsheet newspaper, the newspaper has been published in a tabloid or "compact" format since 2003. The Independent is regarded as coming from the centre-left, on culture and politics, but tends to take a more pro-market stance on economic issues. It has not affiliated itself with any political party and features a range of views given on its editorial and comment pages. The paper originally described itself as "free from party political bias, free from proprietorial influence"—a banner it carried on the front page of its daily edition. This banner was dropped in September 2011. This video is targeted to blind users. Attribution: Article text available under CC-BY-SA Creative Commons image source in video

A Century After End of WWI, Trump Snubs Peace Summit While Macron Warns of Growing Nationalism

08:29
https://democracynow.org - The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month—that’s when World War I ended in 1918, 100 years ago this weekend. On Sunday, world leaders gathered in Paris to pay tribute to the dead, marking the anniversary of the armistice of what had been described as the “war to end all wars.” Following the formal ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe, Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel attended a peace conference with dozens of heads of state, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Trump was reportedly the only one among 72 leaders to skip the meeting. Trump also faced widespread criticism for his decision to cancel a visit to a U.S. military cemetery in France on Saturday because it was raining. To find out more about the significance of the war and its commemoration, we speak with Adam Hochschild, lecturer at the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California at Berkeley. His most recent book, published last month, is titled “Lessons from a Dark Time and Other Essays.” His article for The New Yorker earlier this month was headlined “A Hundred Years After the Armistice.” Democracy Now! is an independent global news hour that airs weekdays on nearly 1,400 TV and radio stations Monday through Friday. In Mexico Sunday, the independent magazine 'Processo' released new evidence that ties Federal forces to the abduction of the Ayotzinapa students in Guerrero. The magazine highlights a series of videos allegedly shot by some of the students during the September 26 incident which clearly show that one of the '43' abducted students had already been killed. In 2009, Paul Kingsnorth and Dougald Hine published Uncivilisation: The Dark Mountain Manifesto, a challenge to face the deep cultural roots of today's crises and a call for new stories for an age of climate change and ecocide. Today, the Dark Mountain Project has grown into an international network of writers and thinkers, artists and musicians, organising festivals, events and exhibitions, centred on the Dark Mountain journal. In this public conversation, Dougald and Paul will discuss some of the lessons they have learned from this journey and the questions it has thrown up: where are the new stories that could help us make sense of our situation? How do we live with ecological grief? What is the role of art and culture in a time of unravelling? What happens when we create a space in which we can talk about the darkness and doubt that we feel in the light of ecological crisis? And what does it mean to find 'the hope beyond hope' which the manifesto speaks of? Paul Kingsnorth Paul Kingsnorth an author, writer and co-founder of Dark Mountain. A former Fleet Street journalist and deputy editor of The Ecologist magazine, he is the author of two books of political reportage, One No, Many Yeses and Real England, a collection of poetry, Kidland, and a recently-published novel, The Wake. He has had writing published across the world, has won awards for his poetry and essays, and has taught and spoken at universities, colleges, festivals and other events in Britain and further afield. Dougald Hine Dougald Hine is a writer, speaker and kickstarter of projects. After an early career as a BBC journalist, he co-founded the educational web startup School of Everything, followed by the regeneration agency Spacemakers. Rome streetstyle, attractions, lifestyle moments, and French connections.

08:48
Here's one more vlog from Rome...flying back to Paris on Sunday. I wanted to share with you scenes from this beautiful city: 1:01-2:52...The Trevi fountain, nearly 300 years old, is visited by millions of tourists every year. Its poor structural condition was exposed in 2012 when bits of its elaborate cornice began falling off after an especially harsh winter. The historical fountain, the setting for the film "La Dolce Vita'' and the place where dreamers leave their coins, has been reopened in 2015 after a 17-months restoration. Many people head to the Trevi Fountain not only to take a look at it but also to toss in a coin, which is said to ensure a return to Rome. You are supposed to throw the coin with your right hand behind your left shoulder. The fountain became famous in 1960 with the release of the film La Dolce Vita. 2:59-7:06...Downtown Rome, this is where you'll find Rome’s best shopping streets. From the prestigious promenade of Via dei Condotti to the independent boutiques of Via Vittorio Veneto, the best streets in Rome to shop for designer labels, jewelery and unique souvenirs. 7:41-8:33...The Spanish steps were built in 1723-1725 by a design of the rather little known architect Francesco de Sanctis and were financed by French diplomat Étienne Gueffier’s bequeathed. It was built in order to link the the Trinità dei Monti church 7:40 that was under the patronage of the king of France, with the Spanish square below, 7:57. The long, triangular Spanish square is named after the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See. In the 17th century, the area around the embassy was even considered Spanish territory. The idea of connecting the church with the square below originates from the 17th century, when the French also planned a statue of King Louis XIV of France at the top of the staircase. This plan was never executed, due to the refusal of the Pope. Enjoy!!! À Suivre

Independent Baking Co.

02:10
The Independent Baking Co. recently opened up in Five Points and serves everything from danishes to olive bread. In a storefront that used to specialize in french braids, now stands a bakery that specializes in french breads. The Independent Baking Co. opened up shop in Five Points at 1625 South Lumpkin St. where the former hair salon, Strand, was located. The bakery, which opened on Aug. 14, is serving fresh bread and baked goods made from scratch. In their first month of operation, the Independent Baking Co. has been very successful according to owner Thomas Leonard. "(The bakery items) all sell pretty well, but by pure numbers I'd say the baguettes (are selling the most)," Leonard said. "The semolina bread -- we don't make it everyday- but when we do, it always runs off the shelf. It's really delicious." The bakery opens at 7 a.m. every morning, except Sundays. The Independent Baking Co.'s baked goods and pastries are restocked every morning and sold out by noon. "(We make) scones of various sorts, cookies, chocolate croissants and danishes," Leonard said. "Some days we've had a local fig and chevre danish, Chris (the head baker) was picking figs on the his way to work and jarred them." Leonard has been baking for more than 30 years. He started baking his senior year in college. "I started baking close to my last year in college at Fairhaven College at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash.," Leonard said. "Someone who lived in my building had a bakery." Leonard obtained a job at the bakery in Alert Bay, B.C., Canada, owned by his neighbor. At this bakery Leonard learned how to bake, and he brought those skills with him to Athens. "My wife and I moved here about two and half years ago and it was a little surprising to me that Athens already being such a great place for food didn't have a bakery of this style," Leonard said. "To get the kind of bread I wanted to eat I had to make it at home." The bakery cultivates a yeast starter onsite that they use for most of the breads they bake. "Everything we do is hearth baked and most of what we do is naturally leavened. Instead of using a commercial baker's yeast we're using a starter that we make here in the bakery," Leonard said. "(The starter) is what most people call sourdough, what the french call leaven and our baguettes are just made of commercial baker's yeast starter." The Independent Baking Co.'s hearth baked naturally leavened breads have received positive feedback from Athenians. "I have been frequenting (the Independent Baking Co.) since it opened," Athens local Rabun Deekle said. "The chocolate croissants are delicious, the scones are amazing, I haven't had anything bad yet. I happen to run the building right behind here, Hodgson's Pharmacy, so I'm delighted to have them in the neighborhood." The bakery's appeal is not only limited to adults, but also high school students, as well. "First we bought the sourdough bread and had that for dinner, it was really wonderful," Clarke Central High School sophomore Jared Warner said. "The bakery itself was really kinda cool and the bread itself is really delicious." Story by Tiernan O'neil: http://www.odysseynewsmagazine.net/2013/09/13/breaking-bread/
