Why Fair Trade is So Important
The frenzied Black Friday scenes are familiar: hordes of customers pushing through the doors to get their hands on that special post-Thanksgiving steal of a purchase. But how many of us know where those items are from? Do we really know how that pair of jeans was made, or who put those shoes together? More than 40 million people work in the garment industry worldwide. As some of the world’s lowest paid workers, they are at the mercy of a system in which many companies strive to maximize profits by paying employees as little as possible. But consumers are beginning to realize the power of their purchases to shape the lives of workers. Patagonia sees this as an opportunity to support the people behind the product and work toward wage equity in the supply chain. And this commitment goes beyond just a few token factories or a new marketing campaign. It is a growing movement that strives to do the right thing, even when it’s difficult or less immediately profitable to do so. Here’s how it works. I’ve spent so long wondering about how to approach the environmental chat as a fashion blogger, but thought discussing some of my favourite more ethical brands would be a good place to start- and hope you discover some new gems too! Changing how you think about clothes | Heather Franzese | TEDxFruitvale
What are you wearing? Where was it made? "Made" probably makes you think "stitched," but what happened before that? Where did the fabric come from? Did your shirt start on a farm -- as a cotton plant, sheep's wool, a silkworm, petroleum, or a recycled plastic water bottle? These questions matter. Why is it that we can walk into a grocery store and make all kinds of choices about how our food is made and what's in it, but we can't make any of those same choices about clothing? About Heather Franzese, senior manager at Fair Trade USA: Heather has been working for more than 12 years to improve the lives of vulnerable farmers and workers in global supply chains. Last year, she launched Fair Trade USA's Fair Trade Certified™ Apparel & Linens program in the U.S. Heather brings together industry experience managing CSR for Columbia Sportswear Company's licensed and collegiate categories, a fundraising track record of channeling $4 million in social impact philanthropy to Fair Trade certification, and field experience working with small-scale farmers for the Peace Corps in Mali. This talk is part of Session Three: Money for TEDxFruitvale, which was held on October 14, 2011 at Mills College in Oakland, CA. The conference's theme was Harvesting Change, and it focused on farmworkers, labor and other social justice movements, and fair labor practices in business. http://www.tedxfruitvale.org/ About TEDx, x = independently organized event: In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Indigenous: The Importance Of Fair Trade
Full description and comments at: https://www.peakprosperity.com/podcast/114473/indigenous-importance-fair-trade Fashion is a dirty business. Did you know that the fashion industry is responsible for five percent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions? That's equivalent to the impact of the aviation industry -- equal to the carbon output of all the planes flying around the planet each year. In addition, the industry is rife with human rights abuses and is a toxic polluter. Just as what we choose to eat has an impact on our bodies, our communities and the planet, so does what we wear. But while there's been substantial advancement in consumer labelling in the food industry ("organic", "pasture-raised", etc), there's not much of an equivalent with apparel. The next time you buy an article of clothing, how can you make a choice better aligned with your values? Here to explain how are Scott Leonard and Matt Reynolds, founders of Indigenous Designs, an organic fair trade fashion company at the vanguard of forcing the apparel industry to become more socially responsible.

How to shop for sustainable fashion | Justine Leconte
This video answers your questions from 3 weeks ago: How to know which fashion brands are ethical and sustainable? Where to shop for sustainable clothes? My 5 tips: 1. Visit the brand’s ABOUT section: are they being transparent about their process and about where the fabrics come from? 2. Google the brand: were there sourcing scandals in which the brand was involved? 3. Look out for certification symbols in online shops and check the symbols on the Eco Label Index: http://goo.gl/9KTKSr Examples: GOTS and FAIR TRADE. 4. Research by country, brand or production criteria on Eco Fashion World: http://goo.gl/DWMntR Example: ABURY, my friend’s label based in Berlin with production in Marocco: http://goo.gl/h2XE8m 5. Read blogs and websites about sustainable fashion. Here are a few interesting ones: Guide to buying sustainable, fair trade and vegan clothing: http://goo.gl/9oBYS0 Affordable fashion online: http://goo.gl/zWxn7d Sourcing directory for fashion: http://goo.gl/A3t2Y5 Ethical Consumer – the website of the magazine: http://goo.gl/NYHe8N And if you see a brand doing something wrong, say it! Inside Fairtrade fashion - a day in the life of People Tree
It was one of the first ethical fashion brands to hit the mainstream, has a range of Fairtrade and organic cotton in Topshop and is run by a charismatic leader who started out in Japan. People Tree is definitely no ordinary label - but what's it like to work there? And what inspired its team to join? We spent a day with People Tree to find out.

Fair Trade In Action
http://www.tvchoice.uk.com - 29 mins, 2008 What is fair trade? How does it work in practice? What difference is it making to people in the developing world? This is the story of fair trade fashion company People Tree SWEATSHOP LABOUR: The UK fashion business is worth over £40 billion annually. But beneath the industry's glamorous façade, there's an inconvenient truth: most of the clothes are made in the developing world using sweatshop labour. People Tree set out to make a difference, by selling well-designed clothes produced in the developing world for a fair price. They're now selling through Top Shop and working with 50 producer groups in 15 different countries. UK turnover is £1.5 million. HAND-MADE: All People Tree's garments are hand-made. This means it is all much more labour intensive and slower than in factories. But that's the whole point: to create as much employment as possible. Care for the environment is also part of People Tree's plan. They use natural dyes and avoid toxic or synthetic raw materials. They use organic cotton which means not relying on harmful pesticides - but they're not totally organic yet. BANGLADESH: One woman working on People Tree's clothes in Bangladesh does seem to be benefiting from fair trade. She tells how working on producing fair trade clothes has improved her life, brought her more money and freed her from being stuck at home. But fair trade isn't an easy option. People Tree has little money for advertising and marketing and every day is a struggle. Fair trade is still only a small fraction of the fashion business - can it ever go mainstream? DVD EXTRAS include interviews with a fair trade sceptic, a fair trade supporter and a fair trade fashion shop owner. TV CHOICE has a range of over 200 educational films and film clips for Business Studies, Geography, History, Leisure and Tourism and many other subjects. What is Fairtrade Cotton? Why Support It?
This video gives an insight into why we are passionate about being Fairtrade. It features some of our cotton farmers and our partners in India- they detail their first hand experience of working within the global cotton industry. India is the world’s second largest textile producer The industry supports over 105 million people Cotton comes with a lot of risks. As a result of climate change, crop failure is on the rise. Instead of compensating for these lower yields, global markets and fast-fashion trends are demanding more for less. Fairtrade understands that millions of people are poor not because they don’t work hard. They are poor because they get a tiny percentage of the value of the goods that we buy from them. Fairtrade is an independent guarantee that the producers get a minimum price and a premium on top. It ensures there is no gender discrimination, no child labour, and that producers earn a sustainable livelihood. Consumers should ask tough questions and should pay more. Otherwise, in 10-20 years, we might not see cotton being grown globally. Video shot and edited by The Collins Brothers.

Fast fashion to fair fashion: a toolbox to change the fashion industry | TEDx Talk | Justine Leconte
My TEDx talk is online! I was invited to speak about fast fashion at TEDxUniversityofMacedonia, in Thessaloniki, Greece. Instead of pointing at the negative effects that fast fashion brands have on the garment workers in the producing countries, I took on a more positive approach and made it a concrete "toolbox" to help individual consumers raise their awareness and change their behaviours. I think change starts with the consumer. Thumbs up if you liked this video :-) New videos: Wednesday 4pm & Sunday 12pm (Paris/Berlin time). Take care!
