The original joining of Led Zep - Page, Jones(Baldwin), and Bonham were to have taken part in the sessions with Page on guitar on the title track although Allan Holdsworth's name has been mentioned - Page and Jones were successful session musicians in that period and Zep was inevitable.

The production on this album (and also on Sunshine Superman) is fantastic.

Love the cover name, Looks as if it could be "The hurdy gurdy pAGin" instead of "man".the way "man" is written. Goes great with it's theme for "Britannia".

Was always an absolute nut on Donovan. Great, great stuff. Teaming up with Jeff Beck on the guitar was sheer genius.

Hurdy makes the hairs on your neck stand up...music should do that

Howard - A hurdy gurdy is a stringed instrument.

No idea what you mean m8. The song does for me what music ought to which is provoke thought and feeling. Nothing more or less.

This wonderful album influenced deeply king Crimson. Get Thy Bearings was playing regular live from the first line up and appears on the Epitaph Box set. Robert Fripp said that he had often listen Donovan in the early days of Giles Giles and Fripp.

Who played guitar on this bad boy brilliant, Donovan? Wow unbelievable instant classic love it.
FAA Inspector (4 months ago)
The Zep guitarist and the Zep drummer and the Zep bassist...........all there before they formed Led ZEPPLIN............they were session musicians in the studio this donovan album was recorded at............you get donovan humming and then softly singing a few lyrics..........then the electric guitar stomps on your brain and rips you a new one..

Donovan was one of the first - and most capable - of the fusion artists.. He worked middle eastern, north african , celtic, hard rock, folk and prose poetry into his work. History will be kind to this seminal influence on popular culture.
Pamela Rollins (3 months ago)
@SepiaOrientBanana Nobody cares. Donovan stands just as well on his own now..really always has...
Stephen Sela (4 months ago)
I agree. have you heard "Socrates" a greek fusion band
SepiaOrientBanana (1 year ago)
Jack Pearce Well, it's time for history and, although very unfortunate, sees Donovan as the arrogant British dude who played a song for Bob Dylan and got mad jealous when the latter did the same with a more 'philosophical and poetic' song. I really love Donovan, I really do. His music has helped me through some of the most darkest and painful years of my chronically ill life, but Donovan can be a goof sometimes. I don't think a lot of people know what genius he is capable of. At least he is OUR goof.

I would watch TV in the 60's and my parents would watch too. They didn't like the Beatles' singing or any of the artists at that time. But when I was watching Donovan my mom said "Finally, someone you listen to can really sing."

Jim Nesta - But Alan Parker denied it as well. I guess we'll never know without a time machine! You sure can't miss Bonzo on the kit, though. EDIT: Upon listening a few more times, I think that REALLY sounds like Page's "fuzzy" Telecaster.

Donovan put real feelings into his music. Donovan like many in his time was true artists. Music now is void of meaning.

I remember a few years back when I turned on my car radio and the song Get Thy Bearings from Donovan's Hurdy Gurdy Man album was playing. Someone had covered it and released it as a single.
Dan Abnormal (10 months ago)
Dude, most popular music was always trash. You remember great songs like this, but do you remember the 1970s hit "Disco Duck"? Or how about the shitload of Kenny G elevator music that slammed up the charts? There will always be music you love. For example, if you enjoy psych rock like this I recommend you check out "King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard", they're a psych rock band that took a lot of influence from Donovan.
Jim Harding (11 months ago)
I know what you're talking about! Lots of fantastic music being made these days; it's overwhelmingly obscured by heavily-marketed, formulaic, mindless junk. At one time, actual artists with something to say and convey were much easier to come by, as far as music is concerned. Companies producing music these days hire singers, musicians, technicians and PR people; they are no longer looking for anything like creative musical artists. Fortunately, big music/"entertainment" corporations aren't the only sources for music, especially these days. Dig around and you may find some pleasant surprises.

the media beast would have us believe that no good music exists..... i think intelligent aesthetes in the quieter music genres stay out of sight out of sound and harms way.... i dont think elliott smith took his own life either
