The Heartbeat of Campus: MIT's Central Utilities Plant (CUP)

542 ratings | 24677 views
In 1916, MIT built an on-site steam and electrical power plant to serve its new campus. A state-of-the-art facility for that era, the plant represented MIT’s commitment to cleaner, more efficient generation of energy. A century later, MIT continues to pursue an energy strategy that supports human health and sustainability. Our mission is to advance knowledge; to educate students in science, engineering, and technology; and to tackle the most pressing problems facing the world today. We are a community of hands-on problem-solvers in love with fundamental science and eager to make the world a better place. The MIT YouTube channel features videos about all types of MIT research, including the robot cheetah, LIGO, gravitational waves, mathematics, and bombardier beetles, as well as videos on origami, time capsules, and other aspects of life and culture on the MIT campus. Our goal is to open the doors of MIT and bring the Institute to the world through video.

MIT campus should go fully solar powered/clean energy. they should also invent new form of solar cells

Putting new gas turbines in that plant is like putting a Ferrari engine in a Ford Pinto... lol

My name is Mud
Bruce Gibbs (25 days ago)
ironhead37 - Thanks! Now you’ve got me wondering who you are? You certainly know the plant...
ironhead37 (26 days ago)
You mean like getting tied to the old feedwater system... how are those old boiler feed pumps doing?? 😉 You did a nice job on the commentary, by the way.
Bruce Gibbs (26 days ago)
ironhead37 That’s true. That’s why the new plant is being built in a separate building and being tied in to systems where appropriate.

Thank you for keeping the lights on, and the a/c and heat working all year long!

Feeling proud to be an alumni! Wish they would get the Tesla power packs for energy storage and investment in renewables, solar, wind.

There is a phrase I love ever ounce counts. So I wonder what are the in and out temps for your heated medium through your process, what sort of efficiencies are you hitting, is there a any thermal storage in your systems to act as a battery. Is there any new exotic or unusual designs you plan on testing. Maybe some new looks at intergradeing direct thermal to electric systems useing nanomaterials as a base. You guys have a hole power plant to play with and test on you have to be looking at something.

Did anyone else spot the top secret, DARPA funded, cold fusion, perpetual energy reactor that was hidden in plain sight?
XTRM Bros (2 days ago)
Found it too right by the collective molecular fusion, looks kinda like an energy transmitter that scientist use to transmit energy to the molecular mainframe of cells
Skip R. (1 month ago)
I saw it too! I can't say the time stamp, because it was next to MIT's personal time machine which is messing up the timestamp every time I try to type it.

What do you treat the chilled water with to prevent Magnesium and Calcium Build Up ? Molybdenum , Potassium Chromate ? EDTA ?
Trevor Graham Welch (1 month ago)
What are the qualifications to work there ? Engineering . ?
Bruce Gibbs (26 days ago)
Trevor Graham Welch Stationary Engineering is a state licensed, non-degree engineering profession. Our skill set is more akin to a steam locomotive engineer than a design engineer. High school and trade training gets you started.
