I am thrilled to have found your channel! I am a qualified fashion designer who loves costume design. Your in depth analysis of the costumes are truly insightful. Thank you so much! The costumes of Game of Thrones are quite remarkable. The unseen detail and embroidery on them are spectacular. I love the way you link the designs to designers from the past. Again, thank you!

Hi I just wanted to tell you I am writing from sunny South Africa! I qualified as a designer in the middle of the 70's. Through the years my passion has been embroidery, and I design and sell embroidery kits, so your in depth analysis of the detail is great! I will be watching all your remaining videos! Many thanks for your reply. You have a new fan! +Costume CO

Seeing this wonderfully detailed video, I'm now racking my brain imagining what Dany's dress would look if she makes it to the Iron Throne in season 8... I'd like to see her sitting there in full Targaryen red and black once, but her wearing her signature blue would also be immensely satisfying. In one hand, she'd claim her ancestral right to be queen, and on the other, she'd show that she's her own person and different from the Targaryens that came before. I never gave so much thoughts to costumes' meaning before finding your channel!

Thank you so much Marie and I really appreciate your comments. 😁

When you make references to Costumes of the 20s and 30s, it gives me the chills and I remember my grandfathers stories. The life of my grandfather sucked, just like those of my other relatives and I'm not just talking about WWII but also the peace time in between the wars (starvation and violence)... Even in the 50s they could call themselves happy if they had electricity and running water. This makes me wonder: did art get more extravagant and lavish, when everyone could feel that an era was coming to an end? The harder and more insecure the times were, the more showy the art? This also translates to my favorite art-style: Jugendstil/Arte nuveaux just before WWI...
Costume CO (4 months ago)
Great point edi, I'm not certain but that makes sense. My great aunt was a wedding dress designer back in the 30s and 40s and some of those gowns were extremely extravagant even by today's standards. And of course, there is also the glamour of the Hollywood's silver screen, certainly used as escapism for that time.

All I got to say is that if I played Dany it would be in my contract that I kept the costumes after. 10/10 would wear them alllll the time.
Costume CO (4 months ago)
Well, now that you put it that way!

You don't think you would be sick of them?

Ok so I've been binging and loving your channel, but I've noticed a couple of nitpicks that are starting to kinda bug me. You describe the dress as "dark grey" then literally about a sentence later talk about how it's described by the actual designers as "pewter" and "charcoal". Those are two very different colours, and neither of them is a "dark grey". Pewter is a light, silvery grey, and charcoal is BLACK. Also you pronounce a LOT of stuff wrong; and I'm not just talking about Game of Thrones related stuff that I can see you feasibly getting wrong, like Viserys' name (though that is said aloud about a hundred times, so you must've never watched the actual show to still be getting that wrong). I mean really basic words like "homage". Without intending offence, it kinda sounds like you're not a native English speaker and learned the language by reading it instead of hearing it spoken.
Costume CO (5 months ago)
Thanks for the comment. I'm French Canadian, I'm saying hommage, not homage. I'm not sure what your trifle about the colour is. My point about the dress is that it's not black. Michele said pewter. She would know because she bought the fabric. I am just going by what I see on the screen and it's dark grey. As far as the pronunciation of characters, I occasionally make gaffes.
Pamela Alsop (1 year ago)
Seems like the entire cast went "darker" this season, I figured it was bc they were headed north & dark colors hold heat better. Idk.....🙂
Costume CO (1 year ago)
+Pamela Alsop Yes, I think there are practical reasons but Michele Clapton stated that she drained the colour from the palette to reflect the seriousness of the wars - between men and the war for the dawn.

These videos highlight the armour elements which one might otherwise not think about when casually watching them within the show. I'm hoping that this translates to proper armour when she inevitably rides Drogon into the final battle(s). Tyrion (and others, but mostly Tyrion) have been fretting about what could happen if she gets hit by even one arrow. While I'm not screaming yet over her taking chances with some of the smaller (relatively speaking) battles, when it comes to the final showdown with the White Walkers, and then with Cersei, she NEEDS some practical protective gear. She needs some chain mail/scale armour combo, to protect her, with at least scale/solid pieces covering her torso and shoulders, and a solid, metal helm of some kind. Practical pieces (no extreme moulding to boob-shape, as we know how deadly that can be, directing sharp weapons right into the sternum: "cleavage", indeed!), yet stylish enough for Daenerys (without being TOO ornate). Something which will allow her movement and dexterity, while protecting vital parts. How convenient that Gendry's back and will be in Winterfell, to make it for her ;) Wikipedia has this beautiful pangolin-scale armour from early 19th century Rajasthan, the scales of which are reminiscent of dragon scales, which could serve as some inspiration: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scale_armour#/media/File:Coat_of_Pangolin_scales.JPG

+BCPR I love the idea of Sansa making and outfit for Dany! That would be a welcoming gesture!
BCPR (1 year ago)
Another thing, re: Dany's outfits, and this is as good a place as any to put it: I would really like to see Sansa make and present a dress to Dany, given that they'll all find themselves at Winterfell in season 8. Likely as a gesture of acceptance, and something which incorporates both Dany's Targaryen and other style elements, but also northern elements, and maybe even the wolf of House Stark (I expect there'll be whatever is the Westerosi equivalent of wedding bells, for Dany and Jon. Fingers crossed. Who cares if it's an avunculate marriage? Those were actually fairly common, from the time of the Wars of the Roses, up to the end of the 19th century, amongst the nobility and royalty of Europe. Not as common as cousins, but still common).
Costume CO (1 year ago)
I'm from Canada too! Haha that's awesome. You'll see me drop references about that as much as possible. That scene north of the wall (aka "The Stupidest Suicide Mission Ever") was pretty laughable since anyone from Canada would know that the group would be goners in less than 24 hours from exposure. Michele Clapton has mentioned that production won't let her cover the heads of her principal actors so it's very unlikely that we will ever see anything like that for Dany although it would be awesome.
BCPR (1 year ago)
I haven't checked out the season 7 ones, yet. Will do! Yeah, it would be pretty cold... but I guess it's like the "no hats" decision, for the ranging party north of the wall, to grab a wight (aka "The Stupidest Suicide Mission Ever"). Even if they're portraying Dany with an increasing mental strength to her, through costume, she still has to look gorgeous doing it... because she's Dany, afterall. Much like how covering up Kit Harington's hair would be just criminal, apparently. I'm from Canada, so for me, watching that ranging party, I hear my mother's voice shouting out the door after young me going out to play in the snow: "WEAR A TOOOOOOQUE!!" I somehow doubt that they'll ever give Dany that much-needed helmet (as much as I'd even accept an open-faced one, because we need to see her emote. How cool would she look with something reminiscent of a Valkyrie, or reminiscent of Drogon's horned crest on his head? Something nice and shiny and silvery. Or, they could top it with some sort of horse hair crest or tassel, if they must, to compensate for covering up half of her own under the thing. It could even be ornate, given that she's basically riding in like a general, and she IS nobility. There's been real-life examples: https://io9.gizmodo.com/the-weirdest-and-fiercest-helmets-from-the-age-of-armor-510686611). Here's hoping for some torso protection, AT LEAST.
Costume CO (1 year ago)
Thanks for commenting. Have you seen my season 7 recap videos? I go on a pretty good rant about this very thing. For me, Dany should be wearing armour of some kind and I questioned why production chose not to go that way. Also, she is flying the equivalent of a 747 so it would be very cold too.
Sybille Stahl (1 year ago)
I got excited when I saw the 'dragon scale' on Dany's gown at 5:50. I have seen that pattern on Pinterest, under 'fabric manipulation'.

That's awesome. It's also on Michele Carragher's website. I think I put a link but if you can't find it I will provide it for you.

I think her costumes became more and more impressive
Costume CO (1 year ago)
Yes, I think it shows as she gains more power and finds her place in the grand scheme of things.
Justice J. Srisuk (1 year ago)
Wow. I had no idea that Dany wore ready to wear fashions on the show. You would think that it would've been cheaper just to make a copy instead of actually buying an (incredibly) expensive Vionnet dress.
Costume CO (1 year ago)
Michele Clapton probably worked out the labour on making a new gown vs purchasing a designer gown outright. Also, she might have been able to barter since it was for GOTs.

I found your attention to detail amazing. The pattern you noticed on dany's laser cut leather dress reminded me of this video which analyses the symbolism in GOT, specifically in assosciation to Jon and Dany. It would be great if you could chaeck it out. Many costume decisions seem to be inspired by those symbols. Https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-86tiHAupQ&feature=share

Hey Rocio, thanks for this. I actually saw this video last month and reference it in my latest video if you want to check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reXCgJX_rFY [11:20]
Not a lot of people knows it, but it'd be nice to mention that Daenerys' ring and bangle are made and designed by Gloria Carlos, out of iron and gold. She designed them before the series and Emilia Clarke choose the ring out of several ones presented to her by Michele Clapton. I talked to Gloria over Skype when I commissioned her, she's a lovely lady and have known Michele Clapton for a while.
Costume CO (1 year ago)
Okay, I found her site and her twitter. Thanks again!

Great analysis! I love the costumes in the show, but I wish they brought over the tokars from the books. It shows how Dany respects the culture of Meereen , and wants to be their queen, not conqueror. The tokar is an uncomfortable but elegant garment, meant for masters to look pretty in (kinda looks like a sari, I think). But the tokar contributes to Dany not feeling like herself as she becomes more and more frustrated by the politics of Meereen and the compromises she has to make. When she flies off on Drogon, she symbolically throws off the movement restricting tokar and runs into the pit to him.

Daenerys also switched to black in 6x09 and 6x10 because that's a Targaryen color. She's never worn red and/or black before but going back to Westeros means dressing in her family colors.
Costume CO (1 year ago)
+amyrat151 She's actually not wearing black in season 6. It's pewter.

Hello! Thank you so match for so interesting video! I have a question, what do you think, what for type fabric in final dress Daenerys, material?
Costume CO (1 year ago)
Hi Elena, If you mean the dress from the final scene in season 6, then I believe it is a ribbed or textured silk pattern. Definitely pewter, according to Michele Clapton. Here is an example, although it might be a tad shiny, but colour and texture are pretty good: http://www.renaissancefabrics.net/product/pewter-ribbed-silk/

No mention of the Egyptian influence? The sharply pleated white skirts, the color lapis....while sitting in a pyramid. You gave so much acknowledgment to the Japanese influences in Cersei's gowns and this is much more overt.

Thank you for this video! I was so happy when I came home today and saw that you had uploaded the second part! I loooooved Dany's finale dress. I had always assumed that it was black because that is the Targaryen color and not so much because of the war situation, but I guess that makes even more sense... Smart girl Dany for always wearing pants and boots underneath! That came in really handy when the Dothraki captured her.
Costume CO (2 years ago)
uesue I thought it was black too until I saw Michele's interview. I suspect that next season she will start venturing into the Targaryen reds and blacks.
