Is there a link to download your wallpaper? :)
Philip VanDusen (1 day ago)
I got it from imgur.com in a huge wallpaper dump - I don't own it and therefore wouldn't feel right posting it.
I suggest in 2019 to choose a trend of graphic design with elements of cubic extrusion
Most of all I like to paint pictures. There will be free time, I will show you more
Philip VanDusen (1 day ago)
Thanks for sending the link - you are Valentin, right? Your artwork is cool. Do you have example of how this is trending in design?Where else is it showing up? Do you have examples? Or is it just your personal favorite technique?
Philip VanDusen (3 days ago)
Thanks Валентин! You are the very first person - out of over 1,000,000 views to actually send me a trend suggestion! Congrats. Now I need you to email me an example of what you're talking about - through my website - link in the description. Interested...
When I was a kid, people would make fun of my last name by calling me VanDusen! HAHA! I am a VanHuizen.

These are all great observations. I'd just make the point that your pronunciation of typography sounds like topography, which obviously isn't the same thing.

First time on this channel. Never heard of Philip, but like how he has a Dutch last name and also for the name of his company. Inspiring video, so consider this designer subscribed!
Philip VanDusen (21 days ago)
Janne, My family came to the US (when it was still New Amsterdam) in 1623. So we've been here a while. But as you know Verhaal means "story" which is soooo important in branding. So glad you found me - and took the time to comment. Hope to see you back in the comments on other videos.
2018 design trends = recycling design trends that have been around for decades. Not that that is bad, good design is good design ... but it makes me wonder if we've reached a point where nothing truly new can be done? Everything new is "retro".
Philip VanDusen (21 days ago)
Illusion - thanks for your comment! I appreciate it! --I was in the fashion industry for 15 years and travelled the globe shopping for trend 3x a year, Tokyo, London, Milan, Berlin etc. Trend hunting was my job. I’ve worked with major trend houses like WGSN, Stylus, JWT, Pantone. The one thing I’ve learned is that trends are never limited to specific periods of time and are very fluid in how they appear. Trends are revisited, altered, revised - new perspectives are added - they disappear and then they come back over and over year after year (particularly in the fashion industry - when was the last time you saw anything truly new there - never - it's ALL a rehash) (Russian Constructivism - celebrated it's 100 year anniversary as a movement this year - never really goes away). Some trends take a few years to grab hold and become recognizable as popular. So people like you, who may see and recognize trends early - may be mentally registering them way before other people so they may seem older to you - but not others. To many folks who have no formal training in art/design history they are totally new. I can never assume the knowledge base of my audience. Anyway I hope you were somehow inspired.
Nate Chao (1 month ago)

ive seen all of this in 2016 or even 2015
Philip VanDusen (1 month ago)
M-a, Watch my video on "What is a design trend?" https://youtu.be/hTz6cPyQiTQ and you will get some perspective on why trends aren't defined by specific years finitely. Many are very long-lived. So I'm not surprised with your comment - because it's true and you're right - but that does not take them out of being in a "trend" category as "trend" is defined.
Marlene Langhein (1 month ago)
I really like the examples you picked :)

Francis Rios (1 month ago)
Would you happen to have a tutorial or lead me somewhere that can do #15? Those colors are transparent but really bold at the same time. I would like to learn how to do that. Thank you!
Philip VanDusen (1 month ago)
Francis - the colors remain bold because they are layered over B+W photos creating a stark contrast. The effect can be achieved in Adobe Illustrator using the transparency control - or in Photoshop using layers and transparency also. The trick is to choose a high-chroma color to begin with so when it is made transparent is retains it's vibrancy. For a tutorial search "using transparency in Adobe Illustrator".
AstroGardner (1 month ago)
Is there any templates for systematic color or integration themes for a wordpress blog?
Philip VanDusen (1 month ago)
Astro, Thanks for watching! I'm sorry, but I don't really do tutorials on my channel. But there are a lot of software tutorial channels out there on YT, just do a search and you'll find some great ones! Good luck in your design career!
Sub Rosa (1 month ago)
its interesting that Glitch is now a trend, given that it featured over 40 years ago in Star Wars, during the Princess Leia holograph. I guess its taken that long for us figure out quick ways of doing it.
Philip VanDusen (1 month ago)
Sub, and Apple is using it on some of their latest ads --- and Apple isn't know for being behind on trend!

Jen Christine Ogsimer (1 month ago)
what is the difference of deconstructed spacing to disjointed text??
Philip VanDusen (1 month ago)
Jen, "Deconstructivism" (actually essentially Russian Constructivism) is about collage - including imagery and letter-forms - while Disjointed Text is really about using letterforms alone as design elements rather than an over-arching aesthetic.
Azam Albrahem (1 month ago)

Kabla21 (1 month ago)
This was so interesting. I feel like lot of these trends have motion quality to them. I have seen these techniques being used in motion graphics earlier but now it seems like designers are taking inspiration from that. I have one question , do you follow trends in motion graphics ? It would be great if you did a video on the trends in motion graphics as well ! Great content and very helpful video. Thanks !
Philip VanDusen (1 month ago)
Kabla - that's a great idea. I'm not a motion designer - so I don't have my finger on that pulse unfortunately.

Jason Mclean (1 month ago)
Hi there, great video, and some good ideas for new projects ! but what I would most like to know is whether you would still recommend graphic design as a good industry to get into in 2018? as from what I am seeing it is a very swamped market with everyone claiming to be a designer and charging next to nothing for their work, how can you compete with people on fiverr doing $5 logo design and such? and if you are just starting out now how would you get anyone to notice your work when there are 10's of millions of others doing the same?
Philip VanDusen (1 month ago)
Jason - yes, I do think it is still a viable career - BUT look at this video I did - it will give you some important ideas: How to Compete With Fiverr - https://youtu.be/9AoBMVDObic
Im sorry but I saw these pictures on Pinterest 2 years ago :)

What is the graphic design application to build the liquid text..? And also for the colir channel?
ivanella zuhdi (2 months ago)
thank you. try to find out
Philip VanDusen (2 months ago)
ivanella - liquid text in the examples I showed was doing in a huge variety of ways - so that is hard to nail down. Some with Photoshop, some with actual photography of physically created things (like the black ink one on the lower Right) some illustrated by hand. A couple are done with 3D modeling programs. Color channel is almost exclusively Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

Zack Morgenthaler (2 months ago)
You know your stuff! Thanks for referencing deconstructivism and dada. My fine art education is becoming more useful!
Philip VanDusen (2 months ago)
Zack - I called it "deconstructivism" but it is really called Russian Constructivism - which turned 100 years old as a design style this year in fact. My education in the fine arts (MFA in Painting) so I come at design from a very loose - creative. I'm not a type maven or stickler for exactitude like many...

responsible jerk (2 months ago)
I think glitch has been so played out. It has been overused for 10 years already. It has a definite context about it, and can be very meaningful in certain applications. But people throw it out there with reckless abandon and zero context because they think it's edgy.
Philip VanDusen (2 months ago)
Yeah, But I have to say - if Apple (no slouch in the trend-right-design department) is still using it in their current TV ads - then I feel safe saying it's not totally played out. But that's just IMHO.

Philip, this video is Amazing, not because this video is something completely original, but rather because it brings these trends from hiding under our noses, to something made clear for everyone to see! Since these trends look so great, why don't you try bringing as many of them together as you can to create one single fantastic poster? It would be an Amazing challenge...

Ricardo, cool idea!

Funny how most of these are not new, just retro... It's as though the real trend is "green" creativity, recycling trends.
Philip VanDusen (3 months ago)
Most trends recycle. Trends are what is currently POPULAR enough to be recognized and a trend - not generally a crystal ball into the future.

This makes no sense. Trends where? What are these sources from? He just took a list of effects and made a video about them in a list and said they're "trending". Fake AF
Philip VanDusen (3 months ago)
Evie, Sorry you didn't like it much, but this video will answer your questions. https://youtu.be/hTz6cPyQiTQ but quickly, multiple location sourcing. Verified by a number of trend services. Plus my professional skill as a creative professional - ex-VP of trend at a major fashion brand.

Fontography? well thats a first
Philip VanDusen (3 months ago)
Not really the first: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/fontography Yeah, I know I misspoke. I was never trained in design actually - all just real world experience. I butcher terms all the time unfortunately.

I can't help it sorry for cynical but.... "10 things not to copy in 2018 in order to be original = don't do what this video says" - 10, 15, or whatever number of 'things you need' or 'trending things' is a top title for blogs and videos to get traffic. secondly, trends are caused by paid bloggers and vloggers who the companies pay to tell people 'this is a good thing' - for example, the idea that shharing your content to instagram and pinterest is good was started by instagram and pinterest paying top bloggers to start of the trending belief in this fallicy (falsety). After believing such things, i uploaded 2000 images and product shares to pinterest.. 3 months late my website and store was on page 2 of google because pinterest stole all my search results... i deleted the content on pinterest and now i'm on page one again and getting hundreds of clicks instead of the 6 clicks a month i got from pinterest... so BE CAREFUL BELIEVING WHEN YOU ARE TOLD WHAT IS TRENDING.. It is paid advertising posing as blogposts and vlogs, paid by the companies who want to create the trend so you use their apps, and add content to their networks, so they steal your traffic, and also so they can sell ads next to your content, and use a.i. to profile your behaviours and use it to interpret your psychological makeup.. dont forget you need apps to do these things suggested in this '15 trending ways' app marketing vlog.. take note, as a blogger or vlogger, if you have a lot of subscribers, you too, can make money making 'ten good apps for 2018' vlogs and get paid by ten app companies to lie to people saying that instagram is useful for your business. Trends are a science which are created through paying bloggers to create a common belief. Lastly, really successful people dont follow trends, they start them

Webmaster - maybe you didn't watch the video? It's about design trend - and could not be construed or interpreted in any way to promote any company or product.

Glitch is about the only *new* trend here. Everything else I've seen before. Glitch is kind of an outgrowth of grunge, which dominated the 90's, and destruction/erosion in the 00's. When it comes to graphic design and trends, everything just keeps going 'round and 'round. Everything old is new again.
Philip VanDusen (3 months ago)
Erica Kensho, Interesting thought about Glitch - Thanks for watching. You're right about trends going round and round - they do. Many designers expect them to be some secret brilliant invention that foretells the future. Trends aren't a crystal ball - they are merely the current POPULAR aesthetics - that have gained popular/mass usage to be recognized as a trend. However, Always open to hearing any additional ideas you might have that I missed covering...
Frank Neulichedl (3 months ago)
Great overview of design trends of the last 20 years - 😉 So if a brands used any of these techniques in the past it is still relevant. I think the only one you missed is Grunge which was hyped and disappeared but will come back as well.
Philip VanDusen (3 months ago)
Frank, it WILL come back. If 15 years in the fashion industry taught me anything - all design is cyclical.

History is repeating. All those "modern trends" are very, very old. Nothing new in those. Designers all over the world use them for decades. Most of them have root from 1900-1930 Russia. Art students and architect learn of those design elements in their study. But for amateur designers is something new and fancy.
Philip VanDusen (3 months ago)
You are totally right. The thing about what are generally called "trends" is that they don't really qualify as a "trend" until they consistently show enough mass usage to be classified as such. Some people expect trends to be the NEWEST thing - but in reality they are CURRENTLY POPULAR things - whether they have been around a short or, in many cases - a very long time. I mean look at Russian Constructivism - it's been around 100 years! Trends are actually about looking BACKWARD not forward. And yes, I can never assume the knowledge level of my audience - some are very advanced like you - but just as many are just beginning and a lot of this stuff is totally new to them. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
