Chris Blackburn (2 days ago)
+SuperWoody1001 On this recording for the Bobby Gentry show in 1968 it was John Paul Jones, John Bonham Jimmy Paige and Clem Cattini. The first 3 had just formed a band called the New Yardbirds who went on to becomce a band called Led Zeppelin with Robert Plant. I was 12 and remember it well.
SuperWoody1001 (3 days ago)
John Paul Jones, Clem Cattini, Alan Parker were the band

Thank you Donovan. Peace.
Robby Bonfire (7 days ago)
This video should show Page, Bonham, and Jones. No wonder they left Donovan for a little recognition.
Toma Überwenig (7 days ago)
Sadly underrated ultrapsychedelic song that deserved way better. I love that song.

This dude needs to trim his guitar strings a wee bit, methinks.

I used to trip so hard to this weird motherfucker. Learned so much. Thank you, Mr. Leitch!

Fantastic piece of music, ably realised by three quarters of Led Zepplin: my 7" single, purchased when I was 10, jumps out of the speakers, thanks to fantastic production. Steve Hillage's cover on "Live Herald" is a very worthy bit of kit, Go Donovan & Steve!
ZacharyGonzalez (10 days ago)
Bro this music will never exist ever again!!
Jeff Taylor (12 days ago)
I went to a Kiss concert when they were new, at PGH Civic Arena, and Donovan was the opening act! That's why I went!
raakone (14 days ago)
Found out about this from the Butthole Surfers cover.....this version is much easier to understand. The same guy who did Mellow Yellow and Jennifer Juniper also did this? Cool!
Andrea Prodan (14 days ago)
Always wondered: Who's playing that mean guitar ?!!!
Jerry Castricato (14 days ago)

This is one of the songs that made me state americans created rock but british polished it to perfection.
Ricardo Vaz Ribeiro (16 days ago)
+Conkadonk🎶 sure he is. And he's one of those who polished and transformed rock into western youth's soundtrack untill some years ago.

O.P. Yates (21 days ago)
Not to mention the actual bass notes that you can hear on real vinyl.
NWBett (21 days ago)
The 1960s had the best music followed very closely by the 1970s. Donovan's tunes were perfect for the mid to late '60s!! Folk rock, Hippie rock -label it what you want to, but it was damn good music & very original!! 50+ years later it is still damn good!! Timeless!!!🍄🌼😊🌈✌️

When the Beatles took a brief hiatus to India their beloved friend Donovan was one of many along with them on the Entourage and he was working on that song then and George told him he should go ahead and do that song it was in reference to John cuz when John came there was a whole Entourage following him and Donovan said hey George here comes the Hurdy Gurdy Man and that's how the song began!

Life's a fragile thing Harry. One minute you're eating a burger, the next, you're dead meat.
ticktack1 (1 month ago)
I like the way that the hurdy gurdy man hasn't got a monopoly on the drugs market, when donovan cleverly introduces the roly poly man at the end. But the big question is where's the ootchy cootchy man ?

One of my favourite Donovan song!

I know now that it was all a naive dream, but the artists of those days dreamed of peace through the commitment to peace of a generation of new thinkers. They didn't succeed in changing the nature of mankind, but they tried. It was a generation with a social purpose, and I am glad to have been a witness to it. Donovan was one of the first, but being Scottish, remained a bit obscure in North American consciousness. But he was original! And dig the lead guitar work of Jimmy Page on the record.

Rumor has it Bob Dylan met Donovan and reported later, "Nobody home." Does it matter? There is no one living in a cello either. I think Donovan is a fine instrument. Maybe his sort of absent innocent is what makes him such a fine vessel for certain types of music, like the "Hurdy Gurdy Man".
Daniel McCarthy (1 month ago)
Met Donovan in 1997 at the Rock Hall in Cleveland. 30th Anniversary of the Summer of Love. He was strolling around outside saying hello to everyone. Also there that day- Ken Kesey, Country Joe McDonald, Mountain Girl, Wavy Gravy, and many others.

Damn that takes me back!!! One of the best songs, and singers, ever!!! I love the music of my youth. Behind these old eyes is a teenage soul dancing to the music in my mini dress and flowers in my hair. I wonder if this is what heaven is going to be.
