I love your insights into the thoughts behind the costume and the design elements⭐️ Thank you as well for the additional photos of the costumes and the crown, which are not as easy to see during the show. Well done!
Costume CO - yes I watched that too. I like your insights into all the seasons so I am watching all your videos ❤️ I feel season 6 was a pivotal season for Cersei and her costumes, as it was the transition between her gorgeous robes before the Walk and her armour-like Queen costumes in season 7, and really appreciated your insights and photos.
I think the smaller crown on Cersei is to symbolize the Lannisters running out of gold. Her crown is covered in dark spots and is less bright than the usual Lannister gold. I also think that’s why the armor on the kingsgaurds changed, too.
I made my own version of Sansa's direwolf dress, and getting the bib to sit properly was a pain. I ended up cheating and attaching it to the dress (but I also put a zip in the back, so that's also cheating!). I did a fairly good job of replicating the embroidery though.
Hi L. Mallia, it might be that the bib is cut on the bias, but to be perfectly honest, I'm not certain. Would you be willing to send me a picture? I can feature it in an upcoming video if you would like. If so, my email is heidi(at)heidiloney(dot)com.
Sansa might have found a chest of forgotten fabrics that were part of her mother's dowery. Fanciful, I know, but I like the idea. Or, maybe Sansa's father bought it back with the baby Jon Snow, and his wife, feeling they were a bribe for accepting his bastard "son" refused to use them. Also...I LOVE all Your videos !!!
Hi Gary, Yes, wonderful suggestions. I think it shows that they could have showed us something like this quite easily, such as this season when Sansa takes over her parent's bedroom. I think it goes to the fact that they are now rushing so much faster toward the finish line.
With Michele Clapton - I remember reading an interview with her, and she stated that it was merely a 'sabbatical type leave'. She was allowed to leave to pursue a temporary position in another TV show (The Crown), and that she was returning full time after it had finished (because of the production time/s of Season 6)
I recently discovered your channel and really enjoy it! It is nice to see these beautiful costumes in detail and decent light. Although, I can't stand Cersei's new costume and crown.(sorry I know some like it) It's too cartoonish for my liking. The detailing is nice, which is hard to see, I just don't like the overall look. Even worse is season 7! Cersei has always hated wearing the color black and always got out of mourning clothes asap. (Books:) So I'm interested to know what George will have her wearing! Thanks for the excellent work!
Thanks so much for the comment! No, I'm not a fan of it either and while I can see why they might have made the decision to put Cersei in black, I'm not happy about it. This season has been so dark and dreary.
To me Cersei's jewellery has this interesting link to iron age jewellery of Viking women or Finnish women like this: https://i.pinimg.com/736x/05/18/81/051881f079e17e0f96bb1f3d9d4cffd2--viking-dress-viking-costume.jpg The chain in Cersei's outfit matches a viking knit chain technique my husband loves to use, where the metal is woven around a stick and then pulled tight and set into decorative chain stoppers. http://whirlingsun.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/viking-knit-dragon-chain9-924x798.jpg It has a nice symbolism I think as viking women were known to be quite powerful in their own right. They would hold the keys t their estates incorporated into their chains along with other useful items and valuables.
I really like these videos a great deal and I truly appreciate the work you put into them!
The one thing that really takes me out of each one is when you have a blooper.
Maybe it would be better to set a marker for yourself whenever that happens, like a loud noise that would be easily visually observable when editing the audio, and have a do-over of that line? That way it may not be too much of a hassle to cut them.
Thank you in any case for the quality content!
+that is ludicrous Hi there, I've been trying to work on the quality, doing multiple takes on working on the sound. Unfortunately, YouTube does not allow me to correct this on the platform so the only way to do this is to remove the video and reupload which means I would lose thousands of views. At this point I'm just going to leave the old library and concentrate on making my recent videos better. I will still have some goofs but hopefully less often. Appreciate the comment
I've been binge watching your videos since yesterday, when I found your amazing channel! I've always loved the costumes of the women of Thrones but now I love them even more. Much love from Argentina!!
Love your videos!! I know you are getting a lot of good requests, but could you do an analysis for the costumes of Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish? I think his clothes say a lot about his deceptive character. You may have noticed that his Season 1 costumes make him look pious and humble, like a chaste priest, which is the complete opposite of who he really is. In later seasons, his wardrobe moves up a notch with more expensive fabrics, possibly alluding to his desire for more power and a place on the Iron Throne.
Yes! As dangerous and dislikable as he is, the man has discipline. He doesn't like to show off, as his wardrobe may suggest. He's come a long way from where he started out. Gotta cheer for the underdog sometimes lol
+Luke K. Johnston Another viewer mentioned that early on, he looked like a Jesuit priest, which is pretty funny since he's a brothel owner. Although, he does keep his hand off the merchandise from what I can tell. He's extremely disciplined and calculating.
I had this idea where her alchemist guy could have made her some tonic that made her hair grow back crazy fast (he made a zombie after all)) but a side effect is that her nails grow fast too. Eventually she would grow tired of keeping up with them so she'd let them grow long because it reminded her of a lion. What would be cool about this is that I read the Mad King let his nails grow crazy long around the time of the rebellion so it would be another parallel between Cersei and the mad king. Just a weird GOT pipe dream i had....
Just had a look and you are definitely on the right track! Michele Clapton (the designer) has borrowed very heavily from many groups of indigenous people, so this does not surprise me in the least. Thanks Paige, I will give you credit. :)
Costume Cinematografico it reminds me of something like this one worn by the man, but with the fur inside instead outside https://ladynamuu.files.wordpress.com/2015/02/uujgii_ahx3gbg-1.jpg hope it works, its called a mongolian deel, i also feel it would be a homage to drogo, since the dothraki are based on the mongolians, but i can be on a completley wrong path here its just that when i focused on that part i was instantly seeing a deel. Sorry in advance if this ends up misleading.
I just discovered your channel when youtube recommended your Reign video and I am hooked. Have you ever seen the show Defiance? On the show the Votan race, Castithan has some especially beautiful costumes that remind me of Daenerys'. I think it and Spartacus would be a great candidate for a costume breakdown. Thank you so much for such wonderful videos.
Regarding the materials for Sansa's direwolf gown: I wondered about this as well and my guess is that some time passed between Sansa arriving at Castle Black and her and Jon's departure. The show has always been vague about chronology, with weeks seeming to pass between episodes in some cases and no time passing between others. The most egregious example of this is the Magically Teleporting Varys in the season 6 finale. It seems like a bit of a stretch considering the urgency with which she wants to reclaim Winterfell but getting the cloth from some northern town seems the likely explanation.
+Glamazon 617 Yes, exactly! Someone mentioned that it's possible that Little finger acquired the fabric for her. The Varys thing is odd. They could have just left him in Dorne and not have him appear back on Dany's ship.
Oh yeah, and I am really starting to believe she might actually win the game & end up on the iron throne. There's foreshadowing in her early chapters, so I'm hopeful even if everyone else doubts her! Oh yes that is a brilliant idea! You and emergency awesome can tide all of us rabid fans over until the next episode each week! :D
Hahaa that would be uncomfy! Just when she leaves her guarded bedroom I'm sure! I can't wait for Sansa's costumes in season 7, & for your analysis! I find her the most fascinating of all the characters!
Awesome!! Wahoo, can't wait. I am just amazed at the detail throughout all of these costumes. I wish lens filters they used could focus on their outfits more, I think it would add to the show!
I think it would also be interesting to have a segment on how each House dresses/style elements they incorporate, as I loved when we got to see more traditional Targaryen clothing you showed us in the Promo for season 7. It would be awesome to see how they dress as well as the Tullys, Aryns and Bartheons and Greyjoys to name a few. I noticed that the Lannisters have quite a bit Japanese&military influence, I would love to compare all of the Houses together. Anyways can you tell I'm a fan? Haha, thanks for all the hard work you put into the series!
I've just found your channel! It's fascinating the amount of work that goes into the costumes but we can barely see the details on screen. I'm looking forward to see what Michele Clapton has done for S7 and hoping Sansa gets more than one outfit!
hi there! im a big fan of your videos, the level of detail is impeccable. i work a lot making distressed costumes, in your Q+A could you please tell me your favourite distressed costumes and maybe some useful techniques for distressing costumes.
Costume Cinematografico oh that's a okay! she has forgotten how to use youtube so she probably won't see it until late I show it to her lol! my question for the Q&A is how did you become so knowledgeable? what back round do you have?
I have also wondered if she's deliberately cutting her hair now as a way of owning it. I think we'll get a scene of her having a haircut in Season 7 if that's the case, it would be such an important character thing.
Malena Sander but she her self is Wearing a chain, being called breaker of chains maybe it's foreshadowing that she may break her chains and let her madness take over her ?
I myself don't really beleive in daenerys becoming the mad queen but still ...
Do you thing you could possibly talk about the costumes of Ros, I think she's an interesting character who's clothes tell her story for her. She starts off working in a brothel in Winterfell wearing northern style clothing, then moves to Kings Landing where she sports some beautiful costumes like the Grecian Kings Landing dress to her blue Cersei kimono style gown.
Great video! In regards to the Q&A, could you possibly do an analysis on costumes as a reflection on a character's influence? One great example is when Margaery and Cersei were talking before Tyrion and Sansa's wedding, and you could see a variety of characters imitating one or the other's respective style and color scheme.
Oh I was looking forward to this video! You did a great job as usual! I'm so fond of Sansa's new dress, and just like Jon, I like the wolf bit ahah. About HBO promos, I just love Missandei's, Sansa's and Brienne's new outfits. Looks like Brienne is about to reach Winterfell, and I'm pleased with this.
You're right to talk about Cersei protecting her neck, but I don't think she'll end up poisoned, because [SPOILERS FROM THE BOOK] the witch Maggy the Frog told her "and when your tears have drowned you, the valonqar shall wrap his hands around your pale white throat and choke the life from you". "Valonqar" is a High Valyrian word for "little brother", therefore Cersei used to hate Tyrion for this reason, she has never suspected Jaime because he's her twin brother, but GRRM specified he was born a few minutes after her. Who knows? She just did what he dishonoured himself for, by killing the Mad King, so he could turn against her. Anyway I love her dresses, there's definitely something very "Tywin-ish" in them, but she also looks like a Sith lord, lol.
Thank you so much! Yes, I guess I had remembered that prophecy in the back of my mind and was thinking about Tyrion and Shae. Michele Clapton LOVES her symbolism so it seemed likely she would give her that menacing collar for a reason!
The promo pictures were so funny! I love it when a show can be a bit ironic about itself. It's probably going to get depressing soon enough...
I have to say I found Cerseis coronation dress a bit ... anachronistic? Of course GoT is set in a fantasy world with multiple influences but the coronation dress seemed very 21st century and didn't really fit in with the overall medieval European aesthetic of Westeros. (Which doesn't mean that it didn't look awesome.)
Great video once again! :)
Yes.. Long live Regina! Although Cersei could teach Regina on how to exact revenge the RIGHT way.. Instead of a stupid curse.. blow up the palace and everyone including the Charmings would be dead! That's how you do revenge.. :) Love your videos!
