9587 ratings | 279280 views
Improve the quality, clarity and graphics of your CAD drawings with this step-by-step tutorial. As I take the plan sketches for the Gallery House project and draft them in AutoCAD, I'll share with you all my tips, tricks and best practices for turning flat, dull and lifeless CAD drawings into presentation quality, professional documents. A strong graphical style not only sells your idea to your client, but it helps the tradespeople better understand - and construct - exactly what you’ve designed. I’ll discuss: 1) When CAD enters my workflow (and why) 2) Why you need to be using a drawing template 3) Tools + software 4) Tips for achieving clear line weights + styles 5) How to use contrast to your advantage 6) Why you should be printing your drawings regularly You can download my CAD template here: http://thirtybyforty.com/autocad-template My sincere thanks for supporting my work and the channel...I sincerely appreciate it! // GEAR I USE // AutoCAD TEMPLATE: *Download: http://thirtybyforty.com/autocad-template DRONE: *Mavic Pro by DJI: http://amzn.to/2hW3dTA DSLR CAMERA: *Canon 6DMKII http://amzn.to/2mkrtxt *Canon 80D: http://amzn.to/2fBWGMQ LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI * Canon 10 - 18mm f4.5 - 5.6 IS Lens: http://amzn.to/2vyErvS AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp MUSIC I USE: *http://thirtybyforty.com/music ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Studio Joy Works (Rick Joy's New Book) - My Review" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZPhhiLaOhg -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Can I use the template on VectorWorks 2017 Cad software?
30X40 Design Workshop (10 months ago)
You'll find included in the 'readme.pdf' links to download the necessary fonts (they're free if you don't already have them)...
Jay Behr (10 months ago)
I'm wondering about fonts. The template download doesn't include fonts. What font are you using? I'm assuming it a standard font that ships with Windows and Mac?
Marìo Angeli (1 day ago)
Wow!!! Where have you been all my life?
C S (2 days ago)
How do you do a title block. Just text or in a standard block. Have you created your logo on AutoCAD of imported it in from elsewhere. I'm trying to set up my page format line thickness ext.. had it before 10,- 15 years ago in an earlier version of LT, This one seams more complex.
This one is just text + line work...logo is text.

i'm considering buying your template but would like to know if it employs paper space/model space formatting...I am an advocate of its usage on so many levels Love your videos
30X40 Design Workshop (1 month ago)
Sure does...the title block is in PS, other line work is in MS...
Thank you so much as 3d visitations artist CAD has not been my strong point but now I have a better understanding of where I've been going wrong ....loved you point on zooming out and in of the drawings how line weights play and important to highlight what's important...I will be watching this over n over ... I would request a video on the difference type of cad drawing like your celling layout

These are great videos I wished would have been available when I was an architecture Student. Thanks for giving us an in-depth look at your CAD standards. Your drawings are beautiful and have given me some new ideas on organizing my own. 15 years in CAD, 10 in construction/architecture, still getting inspired! Thanks.
You made this backgroud all by yourself ? ( 7:10 ) By the way, this is one of the best channels I found out there. Keep going, you are helping me a lot!

I have a question that always bother me. How do you maintains the line weight when printed at different scale? I tried scale lineweights under plot style but it only make the line thicker...
30X40 Design Workshop (2 months ago)
I set the line weight once and base it on the drawing scale, so for all 1/4” drawings I have a fixed set of weights I use, for details drawn at a larger scale it’s a different set of weights and so forth. I don’t use the scale line weights setting as I’ve never been able to achieve the look I was after. Using poly lines can help to fine tune the thickness you need...at least that’s what works for me...

I stop the video at 0:30 "I never start in CAD" I so disagree. I've had a lifetime of paper. I jump write to CAD, Just the fact of an undo is faster than starting over. My clients want the first draft to be the last. Sure that will rarely be the case, but it's how they think. I WANT IT YESTERDAY AND YOU NEED TO READ MY MIND.

When I started Architecture we used ink pens which came in all different weights. When we changed over to CAD most of the software packages have the pen weights built in. 0.25, 0.35, 0.5, 1 etc. I love looking at a beautiful set of drawings, its a form of graphic art when it's done well.

hi, i don't get it when it comes to 2 different color for different plotstyle (lineweight & linestyle separately). because for what i knew, plotstyle color only react to one color porperties, either if it by layer props or just manually. thank you.
