11825 ratings | 359643 views
Improve the quality, clarity and graphics of your CAD drawings with this step-by-step tutorial. As I take the plan sketches for the Gallery House project and draft them in AutoCAD, I'll share with you all my tips, tricks and best practices for turning flat, dull and lifeless CAD drawings into presentation quality, professional documents. A strong graphical style not only sells your idea to your client, but it helps the tradespeople better understand - and construct - exactly what you’ve designed. I’ll discuss: 1) When CAD enters my workflow (and why) 2) Why you need to be using a drawing template 3) Tools + software 4) Tips for achieving clear line weights + styles 5) How to use contrast to your advantage 6) Why you should be printing your drawings regularly You can download my CAD template here: http://thirtybyforty.com/autocad-template My sincere thanks for supporting my work and the channel...I sincerely appreciate it! // GEAR I USE // AutoCAD TEMPLATE: *Download: http://thirtybyforty.com/autocad-template DRONE: *Mavic Pro by DJI: http://amzn.to/2hW3dTA DSLR CAMERA: *Canon 6DMKII http://amzn.to/2mkrtxt *Canon 80D: http://amzn.to/2fBWGMQ LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI * Canon 10 - 18mm f4.5 - 5.6 IS Lens: http://amzn.to/2vyErvS AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp MUSIC I USE: *http://thirtybyforty.com/music ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Architectural IDEAS (Thesis, Inspiration + Precedent)" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqpizO414ck -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Did you know that if you draw a line in Autocad that you can turn on the "show line weights" button to see thickness? This way your while drawing doesn't need to be polylines. The line weights will take their thickness from your .ctb file.

Hello Eric, love your work and all the tips that you give to help us become a better architect, one quick question, Does the template include furniture or blocks (cars, beds, couches, tables, etc...) ?. Because the OCD in me hate when some furniture looks significally differetn from others, inside the same plan. I like the "minimalistic" aesthetic that yours have. P.S. Sorry for any misspelling.

I am a long time fan of your channel and am taking your lessons more seriously recently since I am looking forward to real professional growth as an interior designer. My current firm doesn't have a good drawing standard since there is no licensed architect in the small office.... and I've been struggling to improve my company standard without a professional CAD drawing foundation since I got hired as a fresh graduate. I really appreciate you sharing the invaluable information that you've built up over years/decades. I know this is not easy to do.

Hey, I kinda don't get the reasons for putting the floor pattern on the plan. For me it just makes it more confusing even with the thickest line. I just got into college so I'm new at this, if someone could explain the pros for me...

How do you do a title block. Just text or in a standard block. Have you created your logo on AutoCAD of imported it in from elsewhere. I'm trying to set up my page format line thickness ext.. had it before 10,- 15 years ago in an earlier version of LT, This one seams more complex.
30X40 Design Workshop (3 months ago)
This one is just text + line work...logo is text.

I have a question that always bother me. How do you maintains the line weight when printed at different scale? I tried scale lineweights under plot style but it only make the line thicker...
30X40 Design Workshop (5 months ago)
I set the line weight once and base it on the drawing scale, so for all 1/4” drawings I have a fixed set of weights I use, for details drawn at a larger scale it’s a different set of weights and so forth. I don’t use the scale line weights setting as I’ve never been able to achieve the look I was after. Using poly lines can help to fine tune the thickness you need...at least that’s what works for me...

I stop the video at 0:30 "I never start in CAD" I so disagree. I've had a lifetime of paper. I jump write to CAD, Just the fact of an undo is faster than starting over. My clients want the first draft to be the last. Sure that will rarely be the case, but it's how they think. I WANT IT YESTERDAY AND YOU NEED TO READ MY MIND.
